Captain Sensible – Gameweek 27

We now turn to our pre-Gameweek members’ article to run the rule over the main captaincy candidates for the upcoming round of fixtures.

First up, we assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) form among the top picks in our Gameweek Captain Poll, then check in with the Opta numbers and Rate My Team ratings before considering a differential or two for Gameweek 27.

The Captain Poll

There’s a clear pecking order to our Gameweek 27 Captain Poll, with Mohamed Salah well ahead at the summit thanks to 33% backing.

The Liverpool winger continues to rack up the FPL points with consummate ease – last week’s two-goal haul at home to Spurs was the 15th time in his last 17 league outings that he’s delivered attacking returns.

Salah has now produced double-digits on 11 occasions this season, and one of those was a 16-point haul against the Saints at Anfield in Gameweek 12.

Up against a defence with just a single clean sheet in their last 13 home fixtures, Roberto Firmino could prove a valid differential. Only 1% are considering the Brazilian, who has three sets of 10+ points hauls in his last five away starts.

A home clash with Leicester City earns Sergio Aguero second spot, on 22%.

The Argentine let down the 16.6% of FPL managers who handed him the armband away to Burnley last time out, but his home form is relentless – Aguero has seven goals and 45 FPL points from his last four at the Etihad Stadium.

Earning just 2% of the votes, Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne have both served up double figures on five occasions in front of their own supporters. Leicester, meanwhile, have kept just two clean sheets on the road all season.

Surprisingly, only 12% are considering Harry Kane for the north London derby at Wembley Stadium in Saturday’s early kick-off.

Yet the Spurs frontman has a fine record against Arsenal, with six goals in as many league appearances against them.

Kane, who has scored at least twice in four of Spurs’ last nine at Wembley, could profit against a defence that’s struggled for resilience on the road, with three clean sheets in 13 attempts.

Interest in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (2%) is on the rise after he kick-started his career at the Emirates Stadium with a debut goal in last week’s 5-1 win over Everton.

Subject to more acquisitions than any forward in the Gameweek, the January signing produced 69 goals and 10 assists in 79 Bundesliga appearances over the past two-and-a-half seasons at Borussia Dortmund. Curiously, he also has four goals in as many appearances against Spurs over the past couple of seasons.

Big-hitting midfielders Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez were both among the goals last time out, but have earned just 5% and 3% backing for head-to-heads with West Brom and Newcastle respectively.

At home to a Baggies’ backline with one clean sheet in 12 on the road, Hazard has struggled for consistency this term, yet has still delivered a respectable four goals and 37 points in the last five Gameweeks.

After opening his account for Man United, Sanchez will fancy his chances at St James’ Park, where the Magpies have a single clean sheet in eight attempts.

Elsewhere, both Theo Walcott and Callum Wilson (1% apiece) have the form to offer up further differential options.

Walcott has bagged two goals and an assist in his pair of home appearances for Everton ahead of Crystal Palace’s visit to Goodison Park.

Four goals and two assists in the last seven Gameweeks showcases Wilson’s potential as Bournemouth travel to face a Huddersfield defence with just one clean sheet in their previous 10 league matches.

Don't be fooled by Kane's xG for the last 4 matches mentioned in this article. That's xG including penalties and he took two of them.

His xG Non Penalty is only like 60% of that. (not mentioning the actual numbers because this is a members article)

And Salah's too. Excluding penalties, their xG values are close.

i always feel spurs arsenal can be a goal fest though, i know it doesn't always work out, especially recently, but i think i may go for it here

        Perhaps.

But Arsenal have beaten big sides at Wembley in recent times. Not like a typical away game for them. This is in the back of my mind.

No idea but I've noticed that it's quite significant.

For Salah for example, he took one pen and it increased his xG by 0.79.

I didn't really try to be honest. 😆

How was the trip? Hopefully full of fun, love, and plenty of lager. 😉

On the fpl front, fwiw I brought in Stanislas 2 gws ago as I thought he has a slightly better chance of nailing his place over Ibe's chances, but to be honest he's still a risk also.

Don't know if I'll keep Stanislas for long anyway as I also have Wilson and Daniels which is a ridiculous amount of Bournemouth to have in one's team.

Bournemouth are a very hot and cold team, but when they're hot they do seem to put a few goals away.

My thinking behind the heavy investment was obviously the fixtures, but also the fact King and Stanislas coming back, as well as Wilson and Ibe already being in decent form, I think they will now have enough attacking talent in that final third to hurt the lower sides over this fixture run and bang a few goals in.

It also doesn't hurt that they'd be still riding high from the confidence that Chelsea win would have given them.

High risk, high reward I guess, but either way I'm all in with a Bournemouth full house. 🙂

I am thinking the very same way re Bournemouth. It would be great to see them with a GW31 game ! The trip away was brilliant thanks 25 degrees every day , lots of walking and drinks with Mrs Slouch . Generated lots of images of a winter sun apartment in 8-10 -years time. Kane v Salah for captain's armband.
Just a quick point I'd like to make. Saints will undoubtably be up for the game given the VVD situation and Liverpool will be looking to make changes around the 70 minute mark given their ECL game next week. Arsenal aren't going to roll over and have their tummy ticked by Spurs at Wembley. For me to outstanding candidate for the armband this Gameweek is Hazard irrespective of the relatively poor home record in the last 8. There will be a response to the Watford humiliation.

Interested in your thoughts on this one folks,

Currently have Richarlison who'll play GW31, but considering his awful form I'm thinking of a sideways move.
This player would have to score 4+ points more than Rich up to, and including GW31 to make it worth it and now's the time to switch.
    So...

    A) Shaqiri
    B) Deulofeu
    C) Keep Rich until GW31

    Pope
    Jones - VVD - Bauer
    Sterling, Salah, Walcott, Shaqiri
    Kane, Firmino, Wilson

    (Fabianski, JWP, Maguire, Shindler)

Can’t decide whether to play Mee or Ayew this week. Any advice?

      Go with the attacker. Probably.

I feel like Mee has been due a haul for so long, I took him out recently and know it is going to bite me
