Scout Notes

Scout Notes – De Gea Stars For United

Man United labour to a goalless draw in Sevilla thanks to a star turn from goalkeeper David De Gea.

After big away wins for Man City and Liverpool and a stirring comeback from Spurs, United’s performance on the Champions League road was considerably more prosaic.

So while some of the English sides will have the luxury of saving their main assets for league duties when the second legs of the European ties are played in March, Jose Mourinho’s men will not be among them.

The Old Trafford return against Sevilla is on Tuesday, March 13, just three days after a key Gameweek 30 visit from Liverpool.

An FA Cup quarter-final tie at home to Brighton follows on Saturday, making it three big matches in the space of seven days for the Red Devils.

Potentially, their Gameweek 29 league encounter at Crystal Palace – five days before the Liverpool match – could be the one rotation hotspot over that ensuing run of vital fixtures.

That FA Cup clash means a blank Gameweek 31 for United which, coupled with a league schedule involving Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City over the next five matches, is prompting sales of many of their players.

Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba and Phil Jones are all in the top five for transfers-out heading into Gameweek 28, with another four – Romelu Lukaku, Antonio Valencia, Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial – in the top 30.

No United player is in the corresponding list for transfers-in.

Pogba was fit enough for the bench last night after his well-publicised bout of illness, and the midfielder then replaced Ander Herrera after 17 minutes when the Spaniard succumbed to a muscle issue which Mourinho declared post-match to be ‘a bad injury’.

In the short-term, Herrera’s potential absence could be significant. He was instrumental in United’s 2-0 win over Chelsea last season, gaining plaudits for his man-marking role on Eden Hazard. Mourinho will likely be forced to turn to a new ploy to deal with the in-form Belgian on Sunday.

But Pogba and Sanchez again struggled to live up to their star billing as United sat deep and soaked up waves of pressure from Sevilla.

Mourinho had made only three changes to the side that beat Huddersfield in the FA Cup at the weekend, with De Gea, Valencia and Herrera replacing Sergio Romero, Luke Shaw and Michael Carrick.

And it was the goalkeeper who proved to be the difference on the night, pulling off a number of saves as the hosts out-shot United 25 to six, with eight efforts on target to the Red Devils’ one.

De Gea, with 43.4% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), is by some margin the side’s most popular player, with an otherwise stuttering United still dealing consistently in the currency of clean sheets.

Last night’s shut-out was their 23rd in all competitions this season – three more than any other Premier League side – and they’ve not been breached in five of the last seven Gameweeks.

Their domestic schedule (CHE cry LIV blank SWA mci WBA) suggests some more of the same is to come, although the visit of Liverpool and the trip to Man City will test their backline to the limit.

Aside from De Gea, however, investing in the defence, particularly at centre-half, is not straightforward.

Jones’ absence with a knock has handed Victor Lindelof back-to-back starts, although not in the league.

But the return of Eric Bailly – he was on the bench last night – gives Mourinho fresh options at centre-half, with Chris Smalling’s run of five consecutive Gameweek starts perhaps under threat should Jones recover quickly.

In attack, the issues surrounding Sanchez’s integration into the team remain ongoing.

Pogba has struggled as part of a more defensive midfield three to allow the Chilean a degree of freedom on the left, but that freedom has not led to major attacking returns – he has one league goal, and three FA Cup assists to his name thus far.

Indeed, United have now failed to score in three of their last five in all competitions – their only goals have came from 2-0 league and FA Cup wins over Huddersfield.

United’s performance in Spain was defensively sound and offensively under-powered, which neatly sums up their current status.

A tricky schedule, a blank Gameweek 31 (with the possibility of another in Gameweek 35 should they see off Brighton in the FA Cup) and rotation issues to come if they progress in the Champions League all make their assets unattractive Fantasy options for now – De Gea aside.

Once again, the Spaniard’s importance wasn’t lost on his manager post-match:

“I think the clean sheets are because of the team and because of David [De Gea]. But, we also kept a few clean sheets with [Sergio] Romero in goal, so I think the team even with a couple of mistakes, the team defended well and when we made the mistakes, obviously David was there. And that’s the reason why he is what he is.”

    Who to lose for VVD?

    Current team is:

    Wilson, Firmino, Kane

Obviously, it goes without saying that it’s not an ideal fixture by any means but you’re clearly not in a great position to start taking out players who have a game that week. You’d only have 4.

Sorry, just realised that you’re not the original poster so I have no clue what your Team is.

Anyhow, it’s each to their own. I’d personally feel happier having a player that I know ‘could’ score points to one that definitely won’t.

Has to be Jones. Injury risk and Chelsea & Liverpool in the next 3 games before his blank.

Bailly coming back into the fold also.

Have a think about what sort of team you could get out in GW35 - then you can probably decide whether you think it's better to FH in 31 or wait.

      1. SADIO SANÉ

hmm, I'd use FH in 38 probably

can't help think this team is 'good enough' - if Everton v Stoke is 0-0 and Bournemouth give WBA I hiding, which isn't exactly an outlandish scenario, then this team beats most teams with 11 players...? Of course, it could go the other way and Walcott/Siggy/Shaq punish me

          1. Pasqualinho
            • 14 Years
            6 years, 2 months ago

Hard to say, but best guess is you'll score less than most 'serious' players and 10-15 lower than most free hitters. Of course, you're aiming for the opposite in GW38 - and if you're lucky you may get it. It is a week when lots will free hit, so if you aren't you're at a disadvantage. Same with GW35.

            1. SADIO SANÉ

There's no foolproof method. Whichever week you free hit you've got to hope that it makes up (and hopefully more) for the couple of weeks where lots of others are doing it, but you're not. And that's really all there is to it.

Shaq got a goal and assist last time against Leicester.

You should definitely not be free hitting in GW31 - you already have Robertson, Salah, Shaqiri, Walcott, Wilson and maybe Kenny playing. That is way more than most.

Since you already have a few for GW31 and you have 4 FTs, you can still bring in two good Leicester, Spurs or Arsenal players and then spend the other 2FTs bringing in two of Firmino, VVD, Siggy, Coleman, Bauer, Daniels, Dawson etc and you'll still be well covered for GW31.

    New ideas for chips

The Norwegian Fantasy Eliteserien competition gets underway soon.

This is based on FPL's gameplay but with some key differences - most notably it does not have FH, BB or TC chips and instead has its own distinct trio of chips.

Thanks to Mr Klin of Norway for highlighting these.

"Parkere Bussen" - Literal translation "Parking the Buss" - essentially a captaincy on the entire defence (double points on all defenders)

"Spissrush" - Striker rush - double points on all strikers

What do you think of these chips ? And should FPL consider them? Are they better than FPL's chips?

I love these and perhaps FPL may be kicking themselves that they spent so long coming up with bench boosts and all out attack and free hits when the really simple, interesting chips are being developed in Norway.

I'd love to unleash these during double Gameweeks in FPL.

Perhaps replacing them with these ones.

I like TC, BB and potentially FH....but all three of these appeal more - great for casual players as they are so simple and great for veterans as it requires long term planning around fixtures, form and picking the best weeks for good defenders etc.

Don’t think Park the bus requires planning but luck, double points on all strikers could be used any week, same as 2 captains...awful lot of chips

Surely all are better in a double when players play twice.

Also parking the bus does require planning in making sure you are stocked up with prem defenders in double gameweeks. Means there are decisions to be made around compromising money in attack that week.

FPL own the rights for their chips (other than the WC), which is why ESF didn't use chips last season and had to come up with original ideas for chips this season. Norway is all about FPL as you know, and I'm sure they looked into using the same chips as FPL last year. Anyways, even if FPL attempted to replace the current chip set with the norwegian chips, they might have to face the issue of ESF owning the rights.

Agreed, I think FPL chips are fine and I don’t think they should be changed at all next year.

These chips are decent alternatives, but would be a sideways move for FPL to change to these.

If FPL are going to change any rule, I’d quite happily allow a fouled player an assist even if he scores a goal from the free kick/penalty.

I wouldn't suggest changing them sideways as well. However, I would be a proponent of increasing the number of chips/splitting them as with the wildcard to force people to punt and use them outside DGWs/BGWs.

This. Exactly this. We know every season that we're going to get at least 2 BGW and 2 DGW. I'd like to see at least 5 chips then. That would be the true test of a non-casual's planning ability, and would only help to break templates.

The two captains one has been suggested for a couple years and I quite like it in theory (it is better than all out attack at least), however it may make it dull in practice if there are only two big options to captain in a DGW as everyone would have the same.

Never heard anyone suggest the Striker rush or Park the Bus and I think that they're brilliant.

First off I think all chips (bar the 1 wildcard) and the VC should go. Let's add some real planning to the game like the old days

As far as chips go I do like these but I bet the Norwegians love our chips more. I think I'd be happy trading out the bench boost and the TC. For their VC double points and the defender double points

I find these all nice but I doubt the game could carry more than 3 chips and the existing ones are better, in my view, with a sole criticism:

I think that all chips, like the WC, should be doubled, with the doubles to be deployed before the end of the year, like the WC. I firmly believe in this, since, otherwise, all chips become DGW magnets and force us to make only DGW strategies. I would love to see the chips forced on us to be used elsewhere too.

DGW's are a strategic tool in themselves. With the chips' use being reduced to those 2-3 weeks, we do not spread the strategy but just double its importance. That makes it less exciting in my view.

I like park the bus, so many players including me have 1 or 2 premium defenders, 1 or 2 mid to low priced defenders who rotate well and then MBemba as benchfodder. You would be forced to plan ahead to maximise all 5 defenders and therefore have a weak outfield (unless there is a week where 5 mid table teams play 5 relegation battling teams in a DGW!) before playing this chip, so it adds to the forward thinking strategy element of the game.

Personally as somebody who plays their main league as a H2H league i find the chips really annoying. So called better teams can get ganged up on by the rest all using their chips against them. Makes it a bit unfair, but best to take it as compliment and win regardless. 😉

Chips really shouldn't count in H2H leagues or cup games. Everyone in my work league just uses chips against me most weeks deliberately, and I went out in the first round of the cup this year to a bench boost.

They are all good ideas but once again they are all going to be focused around DGWs. The key innovation will be a chip that is NOT reliant on a DGB so it entices people to use it from GW1 to GW38. The nearest FPL got to this was the AOA Chip which to be fair was pretty dull. However, my point stands - the ones above will still get focused on DGWs. We need innovation which excludes the usage exclusively in this small set of game weeks.

Are really good ideas and more interesting than the FPL 3

The FPL versions are really useful in such a narrow window of opportunity and these ones listed give so much more variation

still think DGW will be better in some cases but could really mix up their use and can plan for using them in a far more varied way

I would recommend any of these to replace the "season ending/making" triple captain chip

hands down the worst invention in FPL history

particularly like 1 (because it would force you into picking a week to play 5 at the back) and the 3rd one which I've mooted for ages as a replacement for the Triple chip

My first idea is that there should be about ten chips and you have to select your three chips from those

      Ideas for chips:

      1. Un-Wildcard
      2. The 'LOL @' chip: All players who score < or equal to zero are awarded 5 points
      3. Deadball: 10 X points for a player scoring direct from free kick or penno
      4. Two at the back: All defenders get clean sheets for first AND second half individually
      5. The Burnley - 10 x keeper save points

I like these Norwegian chips. I'd like to see a couple of retrospective chips come in - so once a season you could switch your captain AFTER the games, if your captain blanks and another player scores big. Could have a similar chip to allow you to bring a sub on.

I really like the idea of only being able to use a select number of your chips (as mentioned by Viperstripes above). Perhaps either wildcard could be made a free hit if desired?

Separately, I'd say no new chips are needed to make the game more exciting, I think only ideas that promote thinking away from DGWs should be entertained.

Some of those are OK. Most people seem in favour of something that would have a clear, easy benefit - like you can sub in the highest scoring player for your captain. For the 2 captains i would rather see a 1.5 for each perhaps. Or even better you can choose the multiplier for each one up to a total of 3 or 4, and choose which way to split it - like 1.5 on one and 2.5 on another.

What I would love to see would be something that could easily be misused or is hard to find the best use for - but not just due to luck.

Something like you have 3 or 4 chips per year, and you can choose from a wider selection of chips, including more than the current selection. So each chip is a blank chip until you play it and choose which type it will be.

If FPL were to add more chips, then they should make them selectionbased, meaning you can't use them all. WC(s) should'nt be a part of the selection process, though im not sure if I would keep both.

I think 6 different chips, where only 3 of them can be played could be interesting and add new dimensions to FPL-strategy. The three new ones could be:

*Clean sheets galore: All clean sheetpoints are worth an extra 2 points.
      - Meaning that a 5-4-1 or 4-5-1 potentially could add an extra 40points in a DGW. The 40 points is probably a higher ceiling than all of the current chips, and therefore the chips potential could incentivize people to conside a larger pool of players when the DGW's come knocking.

*Cash is king: Activating the chip frees up an additional 0.5million in funds, guarantees 3 FT but transferhits cannot be used. The players you buy can all be bought at the price they had when the gw closed (meaning a player rising 0.1-0.3 during the week can be bought cheaper.
      - Prob a bit overpowered, but surely needs to be when competing with the chips that serves the dgws. Added benefit other than offering an alternative to the "DGW-chips" is that it could serve as a new alternative for all manager choosing to use their first WC early to build funds, thereby freeing the WC for a later release around xmas. Could very well appeal most to seasoned veterans as they probably could find shrewd ways of getting the benefits of the chips for a very long time.

*Baaaaaaaaaaaps (single GW us only): All of your players scoring more than 30 points in the bps-calculations receives an additional 3 points when chip is in play.
      - Gives the chip a ceiling of 36 points which is pretty much on par with the ceiling of the BB and 3C. The chip of course has to be limited to singlegw use only as it would be to valuable in a DGW.

Dont know if the "added" chips would be of interest to others than myself, but my guess is that at the very least it would make managers opt for a wider selection of strategies!

I like ‘Park the Bus’ because it would involve some tactical decisions... will double points from a 5th defender out-score your 3rd striker/midfielder?

Also, I think having one week that specifically benefits defense would be nice change to the usual focus on attack that most of us have.

If I'm honest I preferred no chips. Despite this, with each new chip comes many many players that ridiculously waste them, thus widening the gap between proper players and casuals. Which can only be a good thing.

Ones that reward decision making are good. Ones like 'both your captain and vice captain get double points' are just unnecessary hedging and remove the decision making aspect.

I like these chips also. My chip ideas which I presented some before. I think these would be a good addition to the current chips not to replace them. Will make the game alot more fun.

      1) Espionage chip - you get to 'hack' a fellow managers account in one of your mini leagues and pick his captain for that gw.

      2) The OG chip - get a goal for every own goal scored in the gw. Defender and GK og 6pts. Mid 5 and striker 4.

      3) the header chip - all headers scored in the gw score double points.

      What do you think Jonty?

Would be interesting if we would have a range of chips (maybe 8) and we would choose 5 in the beginning of the season. Would be interesting to see how many would still go with two wildcards for example.

i like 'to kapteiner' prefer it to triple captain for example.

would personally like FPL to offer only 1 chip use every season, even if this means still maintaining the current 3 chips as options. So you have the 3 options but you can only use one of them. Think that would add more variety.

What to do here? 1FT, 0.7 IDB

    Pick, Elliot
    Alonso, Jones*, Dunk, Taylor, Kenny
    Salah, Sterling, Wally, Mkhi, Mili
    Kane, Firm, Wilson

    Jones --> VVD?

Anything elso or just do this?

Seems reasonable if Jones is injured. Kenny needs to go soon.

Depends on the rest of your team. I'd be moving on Aguero if I didn't have Kane/Firmino.

Popular thinking seems to be to ride out GW31 , play WC after in GW32 saving FH chip for GW 35 ...

Well, I just had a look at what team I would select if I was to WC now as opposed to GW32, looking forward to the rest of the season
    - virtually identical.
It also gives me the same number (8) of starters in GW31 as I could build from now until then ....

Why not WC now, and get the benefit straight away?

Injuries could have a major impact or more rotational concerns could develop.

    Best option chaps and chapesses...

    A. Keep Lingard and bench him. Probably means getting Mkhi next week.
    B. Replace with Eriksen for a hit
    C. Replace with Mahrez for a hit
    D. Chuck sterling too and get both Erik and Mahrez.

Have Kane but no Leicester if that helps.

Really want to get rid, however has no blank in GW31 so not sure what to do. Would much prefer Shaqiri
