Scout Scribbles – Ayew Seals Swans Progress

FA Cup joy for Swansea City, a keeper conundrum for Sean Dyche and Harry Kane manning up – here’s a round-up of yesterday’s key action and news.

Ayew the star

Jordan Ayew came off the bench to fire Swansea City into the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1964.

The striker (13.4%) is the side’s most owned player in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but hasn’t scored in three Gameweeks.

His second-half introduction last night transformed a drab and goalless replay with Sheffield Wednesday and is a welcome return to form ahead of a vital pair of matches (WHU hud) that lead into the Swans’ Gameweek 31 blank.

Ayew opened the scoring after Tom Carroll’s shot hit both posts and Nathan Dyer then sealed the deal when put through by Tammy Abraham’s pass.

The Chelsea loanee also produced an assist when he was brought on in last weekend’s 4-1 drubbing at Brighton and he worked well with Ayew last night, which could mean both players start Gameweek 29’s match with the Hammers.

Coach Carlos Carvahal made five changes from the side that lost at the Amex Stadium, resting key assets Lukasz Fabianski (9.2%) and Alfie Mawson (3.8%).

Swansea will now face the winners of tonight’s replay between Spurs and Rochdale.

Double Gameweek confirmation on hold

On Tuesday the Premier League confirmed that the new dates for the postponed fixtures from Gameweek 31 would be announced “on or around March 19”.

This is as expected, with the results from the FA Cup Quarter Finals likely to dictate the order of the TV schedule. It is still anticipated that many, if not all of the five fixtures (which could be extended to six after tonight’s FA Cup replay), will be dropped into Gameweek 34. However, we will have to wait until before Gameweek 32 for confirmation.

Dyche’s dilemma

Burney trio Tom Heaton, James Tarkowski and Chris Wood stepped up their respective returns from injury by playing 90 minutes in a behind-closed-doors match against Preston North End.

The 4-0 win was Heaton’s second outing as he recovers from shoulder surgery, and his timing is looking impeccably complicated.

The goalkeeper has made no secret of his desire to get back and playing to try and secure a place in England’s World Cup squad for the summer.

But news of his recovery comes in the week that his understudy, Nick Pope, is said to be in line for an England call-up himself.

Pope excelled when he took over from Heaton, keeping nine clean sheets from Gameweeks 6 to 21 and bringing in 12 bonus points.

But his 10.3% ownership have been enduring leaner times of late, with no shut-outs in seven and only a penalty-saving 11-point Gameweek 25 providing much cheer.

Burnley’s run-in is strong and promises a return to the more solid defensive ways of earlier in the season.

Which keeper Dyche chooses to take advantage of that schedule could have a major impact on the pair’s international prospects – and Fantasy managers’ late-season plans.

Zaha steps up recovery

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson has no fewer than 11 players out injured at present as he prepares his bedraggled troops for clashes with Man United, Chelsea and Liverpool over the next four Gameweeks.

He could, however, be calling on the services of Wilfried Zaha rather sooner than expected.

The attacking midfielder has been out with a knee injury since the start of February, but could now be in line for a return in mid-March.

That would coincide with a vital trip to Huddersfield in Gameweek 31.

There was a further boost for Hodgson with the news that Martin Kelly is back in training ahead of this weekend’s visit from United.

The Eagles are currently without six regular defenders, including loanee Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who is ineligible to face his parent club.

Clyne comeback

Another defender closing in on a return is Liverpool’s Nathaniel Clyne.

The England international has missed seven months with a back issue, but played the full 90 minutes for the Reds’ Under-23s on Sunday and was again pictured in training on Tuesday.

Another in action on the day was Joe Gomez, meaning that coach Jurgen Klopp could soon have that pair and Trent Alexander-Arnold battling it out for a right-back slot that the German has described as ‘an unbelievably important position’.

Gomez (4.7) and Alexander-Arnold (4.3) have provided us with cut-price ways into Liverpool’s defence this season.

The return of Clyne (5.3) could end all that, although the Reds’ ongoing Champions League duties will likely lead to rotation anyway.

Deulofeu sidelined

Watford’s Gerard Deulofeu has taken to social media on Tuesday to reveal that he will be ruled out “for some time” following the ankle injury sustained against Everton on Saturday.

The Spaniard was to be a key target ahead of the Hornets Gameweek 31 fixture at Anfield and made the Scout Picks for the encounter with Everton. Over 58,000 managers acquired him ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

However, he departed just after the hour-mark and would now seem set to be ruled out of the Gameweek 31 equation.

That could present a further opportunity for Andre Carrillo (5.5) to impress in his absence.

Kane all man…

Spurs striker Harry Kane’s winner at Crystal Palace on Sunday was his 24th league goal of the season as he remains on course to beat last year’s Golden Boot-winning tally of 29.

And he reckons the reason for his improvement is…’man strength’.

“As I’m getting older and more experienced, maybe I’m getting man strength. I’m 24 now so it’s about time. This year, especially on recent form, I’m scoring in more games – instead of getting braces and hat-tricks all the time, I’m getting one goal in six or seven games in a row. I’ve scored a few goals from corners now too, which is another thing I wanted to get better at. It’s confidence, as I said. If you’re scoring goals, you feel like the ball is coming to you every time and thankfully it did [on Sunday].”

Spurs’ run-in should give him plenty of opportunities to stay in touch with all that masculinity, with seven matches against relegation-threatened sides and only Chelsea and Man City to face of the big hitters – plus, of course, potentially two double Gameweeks.

…With no home to go to

But Kane’s prospects at the start of next season could have a major impact on our pre-season planning.

Spurs have confirmed that minor delays in the construction of their new stadium could mean they end up playing their first four matches of next season away from home.

Kane is already no fan of August – he’s never scored in that month – and four away matches on the bounce could well make our minds up.

On the flipside, 15 of his goals this season have come on the road, including the first six from Gameweeks 4 to 7.

So maybe all those potential away days might finally help him break his August hoodoo – particularly with his increased “man strength” to call on.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is it end of the line for Manchester City assets?

This was a question posed by DarrellB and Toblerone52 for last night’s Scoutcast. As we ran out of time to answer I thought I’d post up as a hot topic to guage your views.

The reason they ask is that City’s fixture run is not the best plus they are still in the running for the Champions League. In addition, they could have the league wrapped up soon. This suggests rotation, which is not welcome at a time when many other teams have stronger fixtures and will be needed for double Gameweeks and blanks.

It is also worth mentioning that while excellent at home City are nowhere near the same force on the road in recent matches.

City’s next few – CHE stk BLANK eve MUN TOT

Do you still own any City options?

If so which ones and who is likely to stay over the coming weeks?

I’ve Otamendi, KDB and Sterling. I’ll most likely keep all three until Gameweek 31. KDB and Otamendi – who I have only minimal value tied up with will go. Sterling is the tricky one. I got him for 7.9 and while City’s fixtures aren’t the best I still would like to tap into their potent attack and he looks the best value option. I’m not sure KDB and Aguero will match up against others with better fixtures value wise – Salah, Eriksen, Mahrez, Firmino, Vardy

Well put Jonty, I think that you want 1 of the attack but it depends obviously on value and how much you have tied up in someone. Would you be more inclined to sell Sterling if you bought for a price of 8.5m compared to the 7.9m? Would that change your views?

I've got seven players for GW31 so far but their value to my team over the next 2 GWs isn't great, apart from 3 Pool.
I may do a Sterling to Alli this week (exact funds, differential) I also got him for 7.9 but I do feel rotation will kick in now with lots of alternatives available for Pep.
My other City player is KDB & I'll probably just bench in GW31 & keep him for now as he seems rotation-risk free & has scored well for me since I brought him in a few weeks ago..

I've still got sterling and depending on his injury situation I might get rid to help fund a few more 31 game week players. If I do that then it's quite probable that I go without city cover for the remainder of the season.Secretly hoping he is injured still as I've mariappa to come in this week.

I sold Otamendi for week 28 and I'm selling Aguero for Firmino in week 29 now that Jesus is back. That leaves me only Sterling who I'll probably hold until week 32/33 when I wildcard but can't see me bringing in many City players.

Defensively - yes, it might be time to sell Otamendi or other assets if we have no other concerns.

But in terms of attack - are we really expecting them to stop scoring goals? I sold Aguero for Kane, but the only reason was that Jesus is back. No plans to sell Sterling, and I wouldn't sell KDB or Sane either if I had them.

      Sold Aguero for Firmino.
      Otamendi probably going this week.
Holding Sterling for now - access to City attack and cash tied up in him. But may not survive WC.
City likely to win PL before DGWs particularly if they beat Utd GW33. So rotation has to be an issue (even for players like KDB) as emphasis switches to CL.

Bro they got knocked out of fa cup so as far as games are concerned they relaxed than most. But as they have pretty big lead in league just sterling is enough. Better to get top 4 contenders like kane, hazard, salah, firmino, lukaku, de gea, alonso, bavies and swans cover during their relegation battle

Its a tough one, got sterling for 8.0 and aguero for 11.5 so will be hard to get back for a double gameweek if I get rid. Also got KDB so it feels like I need to get rid of 1 of them. If the game gets called off tomorow they might have a game in gw 31 and then I will keep for sure. Aguero>firmino looks like the easiest transfer to do but dont know. KDB>mane is another alternative. I still Think city will score alot of goals but more rotation ofc.

For gw27 I had Ota, Sterling and Captain Kun. After that it was time to sell Ota and transfer Kane for Kun. After rumours that Sterling injury might be worse than expected it was time for him to go for gw31 mid.

Now is time to plan for next three weeks and then see what the situation is. KdB, Sterling, Sané and Silva are all possible options and may all be worth considering. A lot of things may happen to other assets also. Far too early to predict anything yet.

Mané is a question mark, Hazards form not clear, Alexis or Son might start scoring, and Kane, Salah, Kun and Jesus have all been injured during this season.

It's funny how the scout tweets talk of the 'Salah captain conundrum'. What conundrum exactly? It's simple - you captain Salah most weeks if you want to get the most points! Was it at least addressed in the scoutcast how Mark is in denial about Salah being the best fantasy asset?

Not sure I'm in "Denial" (good pun by the way) on Salah - I totally acknowledge his status as the go-to option, it's just, each Gamweek we are given a choice to go with the majority or risk looking to Kane.

It's kind of a unique situation. I don't remember a season when there has been an obvious captain but also an alternative as viable and as explosive as Kane.

As I mentioned last night, there is clearly the potential for Kane to end a GW on top - he's beaten Salah in 11 GWs this season.

It's my choice to take a risk, it's not indication that I'm blind to Salah's credentials.

The point Jonty made was a valid one. Captaining Kane over Salah (when both are in your team) is never going to gain you the edge or bring the rewards you're looking for due to the high ownership of both.

Not really. If the majority captain Salah and he blanks or gets sent for an early shower, a differential Kane captaincy and haul would do wonders for the rank. This logic is flawed

Sure, but Salah's consistency has been incredible. I think that's the key factor. A blank looks so unlikely and Kane captainers kind of need that to gain a big advantage.

Yeah, not unless Salah blanks and Kane explodes in the extreme. That's the issue. Not impossible but the points for Liverpool aren't missing Salah, perhaps as we expected. The share with Mane and Firmino is still in his favour it seems.

It is a strange situation to be fair. Many veteran FPL haven’t captained Salah nearly as much as they probably should have. I think it’s maybe also due to the fact that we haven’t had someone so prolific in the PL but also has had very little experience in it. He was definitely a gamble at the start of the season that’s for sure.

Yeah, I think when Jonty said he'd captained Salah five times, I'm pretty sure four of them have been the last four GW's!

That's actually coincided with his best spell vs Kane all season.

I've been the same, although I've now captained Salah 8 times overall, so I converted to him a bit before Jonty did. On the flip side, I didn't captain Kane for any of his hat-tricks, but have still gained points by captaining Salah over Kane most of the time recently.

Incidentally, Kane remains my most captained player at 12 times. I have an average of 6 (12) points by Kane every time I've captained him, compared to Salah's average of 10 (20).

Yeah, fair enough - I haven't watched last night's scoutcast yet so I'll have a look for more detailed arguments. It was just a case of the scout tweet prompting me to check your recent captains, and I was a bit surprised - captaining Kane vs. Palace was something I considered as well, but Kane vs. Arsenal was preferred to Salah vs. Southampton for example, as well as an inconsistent Hazard over Salah when Salah had Huddersfield.

Pun was entirely unintended by the way 😀

The conundrum is more around his massive ownership and incredible returns. Such captaincy candidates are rare - Suarez, Ronaldo for example.

How do we tackle that potent mix is key. Yes captaining him every week is the obvious solution - but as we said on the scoutcast even that may not be enough if everyone is captaining him. One suggestion I made was to captain salah and double and even treble up on Liv attack - which means you get extra points for most Salah returns.

Another solution is to captain a low owned explosive player - those that backed Aguero recently over Salah did really well.

I thought Mark's captaincy of Hazard was another good way of solving the Salah captaincy conundrum.

      1. Pierce34
        • 8 Years

I was half-way there to backing Aguero - I sold Kane for 4 weeks and got Aguero so I had him for his 4 goal explosion. But I wasn't brave enough to captain him over Salah.

It shows how good Salah has been by the way when captaining Aguero is the 'brave' decision!

Mark Capt Kane over Salah in the last 3/4 to try & improve overall rank (fair enough) obviously that hasn't worked out, what would be interesting to know/work out is, if Mark HAD played 'safe' & captained Salah for those weeks, what would his rank be now?? And is doing the obvious/boring thing and actually let/hope others above you make mistakes the way to go.

Mark has captained Kane 16 times so far for a total of 107*2 points (average 6.69*2).

If he had captained Salah for these 16 game-weeks (with Kane vice-captain for the one which Salah missed) he would have got 133*2 (average 8.31*2).

26 more captain points for those 16 game-weeks (assuming he owned both), increasing his total from 1662 to 1688 and his rank from 25k to about 10k.

And that's just the game-weeks in which he chose Kane as captain, so he hasn't exactly been very successful at picking the game-weeks in which Kane was the better captain choice!

But it's understandable that Salah wasn't captained early on...it's the last 4 gameweeks particularly, that Mark has been going against the grain (against the most popular capt choice) in order to find a way to boost rank, whereas in reality, if he'd just captained Salah he'd have boosted rank massively anyway (to the tune of 30 odd more pts). Easy for me to sit here and point this out with the advantage of hindsight.

I like the shield v sword analogy. Salah feels safe because everyone does it and he returns something every week, whereas Kane blanks more often but is capable of bigger hauls and rank gains.

I don’t agree with the view on the scout cast that if you have both it makes little difference: it was 8 points last week and that’s fairly significant

      1. Pierce34
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 1 month ago

I think one thing wrong with that analogy is it tends to overlook Salah's explosiveness. Sure, he's very consistent, but he's consistently explosive too - he's now had three double digit returns in a row.

        Its only 4 points:

        If Salah cap: 10pts x 2 + 6 pts = 26pts
        If Kane cap: 6 x 2 + 10pts = 22pts

Salah has a better average, so captaining Kane instead leads to bigger rank falls (unless you can accurately predict in which game-weeks he will outscore Salah - something that Mark for one was rather unsuccessful at, resulting in his rank being 25k instead of 10k purely because he didn't captain Salah in all the game-weeks where he actually chose to captain Kane instead).

    8. Pierce34
      • 8 Years

Just to clarify - I'm not advocating blindly captaining Salah every week. Next week Kane looks a far better option when he plays Bournemouth and Liverpool play United. It's just that the 'conundrum' comment made me check Mark's recent history and was surprised at the refusal to captain Salah over Kane, even when he had much better fixtures.

      1. Pierce34
        • 8 Years

In other words, I'm advocating captaining Salah most weeks because I expect him to get the most points most of the time, not because he'll be captained by most people.

Yeah I guess it plays a part this week for me - great fixtures for both Salah and Kane so the effective ownership acts as a tie-breaker of sorts. Although Salah's amazing consistency kind of clinches it too.

Fixture swings like this should obviously be taken account of.
Kane is likely going to be most peoples preferred captain that week.

One of the features of the top 10k this season has been their ownership and captaincy of Aguero rather than Kane.
Many FFS veterans have suffered from putting too much faith in Kane and too little in Aguero.

Aguero has scored 162 points in 22 game-weeks at an average of 7.4ppg, compared with 173 in 27 at an average of 6.4ppg for Kane.

So, even though he has lost minutes to Jesus, captaining Aguero every game-week and another player or vice-captain for the other 5 would certainly have been better than captaining Kane every game-week.

Salah, Sterling and De Bruyne would also have been better regular captains than Kane.

The captaincy total could of course be improved by taking form and fixtures into account, but captaining Kane regularly has clearly not been the best policy this season.

Just to reiterate on the point in the article, regarding the Spurs stadium completion. My friend is working on the project as part of Daniel Levy’s team of managers who have been contracted to keep an eye on the Imtec contract team and fears there is no chance of the stadium being built on time and will certainly face delays at the start of the season.

IMO that sort of disruption isn’t going to be great at all, it will take a while for Spurs to bed in I feel, especially mid season.

It all depends of course on whether the fixtures are rearranged as we predict (ie. 31 goes to 34 and 35-37 but this is not a given.

I’m pretty much set on DDG and Lukaku at this stage. Vardy the alternative up front but will likely go Mahrez.

Not sure about Arsenal yet, will watch carefully over next 2 fixtures.

Hazard shafts me every time, may go Willian for value.

Possible MUN assets are De Gea, Jones, Smalling, Alexis (if finds form) and Kaku.

Lukaku is most likely of these to be in my team. If Pope and Heaton rotate, De Gea is close, but in form and favour Jones would be first choice as bps magnet if(?) attack is not scoring enough.

Today I would choose perhaps de Gea, Smalling (or Sanchez) and Lukaku.

Arnie is a great differential - was very very close to scoring vs pool.. an oop striker at that price

I have a question for you all:

Is Milner going under the radar as a solid differential?

Nailed as of late, classed as a defender in FPL but plays in midfield, likely to be on penalties, and only slightly more than VVD?

    Yay or nay??

He's not nailed at all though, because we've got Hendo, Can, Ox, Wijnaldum, Lallana and Milner fighting for 3 spots

The way I see it is that their game vs brom is a good shout for a cleanie this weekend- they also play in 31- bonus. Getting Holebas / Janmaat for the attacking threat as they won't keep Pool out.

Let’s just say Rochdale beat Spurs this evening I think will shake up GW31 quite a bit?
For one it will mean Salah isn’t necessarily the standard out captaincy option that week with Kane bs Newcastle.
It could mean the success of the GW could come down to the correct captain choice!
It may also depend on whether you have 3 Liverpool and 3 Spurs players which not everyone can afford in their current team structures.
Maybe makes FH chip in 31 more advantageous?

    Just putting it out there....

yeah you could get a pretty epic FH team out if that happens, although a lot of people will only be 2FTs away from having 3 of each

    Which move?
    (A) Son to Eriksen/Arnautovic/Walcott/Siggy
    (B) Lingard to Arnautovic/Walcott
    (C) Save FT

Anyone brave enough to captain Mane, or even Firmino to a lesser extent over Salah? Purely due to ownership..

I think just owning Mane is enough given his low ownership. How many times has he outscored Salah? Regardless of ownership, captaining Mane doesn't look like a good option to me if you fancy Liverpool's form and fixture.

How so? He is bang in form with a hattie in CL, had more shots and more big chances this week v Hammers as well. Looks dangerous and to dismiss him as an option is remiss

I just feel he's too inconsistent compared to Salah. It's a bit of a gambler's fallacy on my part, but are we really expecting another hat-trick now so close to his CL one?

It's better to captain other team than other Liverpool player.

    Currently have 7 GW31 players (Mane/Firm/Sal/Daniels/Choupo/Shaq/Niasse)

I wasn't planning on using FH, but now I'm not so sure as 3 of these are pretty useless.
Have already used WC, worth saving FH till later?

Would just get Eriksen + Def in for this GW and nearly have a full XI for GW31

if spurs lose to Rochdale then chances they will lose again in GW 31 so nay i wouldn't even want to own most of their players as they would be low on confidence and with champions league to worry about in addition
