Scout Notes – United Crash Out

Man United exit the Champions League with an abject performance that undermines the Fantasy credentials of many in Jose Mourinho’s expensively assembled squad.

The inquests have already begun into the whys and wherefores of last night’s 2-1 chastening home loss to Sevilla, with Mourinho’s ingrained negativity, the imbalance to the side Alexis Sanchez’s arrival has sparked and Paul Pogba’s woeful form among the reasons being cited.

All are clearly factors, and Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are now left to sift through the rubble for the positives that United’s relatively attractive domestic run-in should still be encouraging.

The Red Devils are likely to endure further ignominy if, as expected, Man City wrap up their title-winning push in Gameweek 33’s Manchester derby.

But aside from that and a Gameweek 36 visit from Arsenal, their schedule is still strong.

A probable double Gameweek 34 will involve a home match with West Brom and a trip to West Ham.

And should they see off Brighton in this weekend’s FA Cup quarter-final, another double – possibly in Gameweek 37 – would have them travelling to face Bournemouth and the Seagulls again.

Swansea City in Gameweek 32 and a final-day match with Watford, both at home, complete their fixtures. All bar the City match-up look eminently winnable – just not on last night’s evidence.

The one and only shred of encouragement that could be plucked from the Champions League wreckage was the continued upturn in form of Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian scored from Marcus Rashford’s cross, rushed to pick the ball out of the net and then exhorted the Old Trafford crowd to bring the noise.

It was by some margin the most animated and inspiring action of the night from a United player, and one who is now close to his fine early-season form.

Lukaku has four goals and three assists from his last eight Gameweeks and his strikes last night and against Chelsea, plus an influential performance in the 2-1 win over Liverpool at the weekend, are finally helping to debunk the idea that he can only excel against lesser opponents.

With Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero currently sidelined, Lukaku is suddenly one of the few big-ticket strikers with fitness, form and fixtures on his side, which goes some way to explaining why he’s currently the third most bought player ahead of Gameweek 31 – despite the fact that he will play absolutely no part in it because of FA Cup commitments.

It’s proving much harder to argue the case for other United assets, however.

The brilliant David De Gea is found in 42.8% of FPL squads, but can only do so much behind a defence that has kept just one clean sheet in six Gameweeks; the 17 points he’s managed over that time a paltry return for a premium price of 5.9.

Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling were partnered at centre-half for the second straight match last night, only to be exposed by the shortcomings in central midfield personified by the increasingly unreliable Nemanja Matic and the confidence-free zone that is Pogba.

Marouane Fellaini was surprisingly preferred to the fit-again Frenchman against Sevilla and when he did finally come on in the second half, a wretched 30-minute cameo mostly involved giving the ball away as he strove in vain to find some semblance of form.

Jesse Lingard was another given a start ahead of Pogba, but the 10.1%-owned midfielder blanked for the ninth time in ten league and European matches.

Even Rashford, whose two goals won the clash with Liverpool last Saturday, was muted, not helped by Mourinho’s decision to station him on the right to accommodate the misfiring Sanchez on the opposite flank.

Form versus fixtures is an age-old Fantasy debate, with most agreeing that the former can trump the latter.

It’s a problem in reverse for United right now, with six of their final eight league matches offering the prospect of solid returns at both ends of the pitch, but precious few of their assets, Lukaku aside, in any kind of form to take advantage.

Saturday evening’s FA Cup tie now represents their last chance of silverware this season, with a prospective semi-final sandwiched between the probable double Gameweek 34 and a home match with Arsenal.

The lack of European duties should at least mean that the threat of rotation is now minimal, although the second fixture of their potential double, West Ham away, would likely come in the midweek before the cup tie, so Mourinho could be tempted to hold back key players for the semi-final.

But last night’s debacle merely underlines that, for many managers looking to Wildcard in Gameweeks 32 or 33, investment in United assets seems a risky proposition.

so my 3 options are giving me a headache. I have 2FT and 8 (7.5 depoitre) and very stuck with this:

    A) VVD,KDB,Kane > Baines,Stanislas,Firmino -4
    - Covers the firmino high ownership and would consider this the most conservative move.
    B) Alonso,kdb,Kane > Baines,Stanislas,King/Mounie -4
    - Aggressive option, field 11 and big decision whether to double up on Hudders attack or bournemouth attack. ( I own Depoitre and Wilson)

Which is better, conservative, aggressive Bournemouth or aggressive Hudders?

My option would be A, but depends if you're chasing or trying to retain a good place in your league.

Im 130points clear in my main cash ML with OR 50k but want top 10k finish. Firmino gets double digits this work and I'm without him, it could really hurt me!!

      Other option:

      Mane,Alonso,Kane > Stanislas,Firmino,Baines

So, obviously Kane is to be sold. But who are you bringing in for the blank GW anyway? I don't think there's anybody out there worth my top striker spot who has a fixture this GW. Feels like buying somebody just for one GW is big risk for a -4, and then I don't want to get stuck with another bottom table club striker just because nobody good had a fixture this GW.

I'm getting Mounie/King and than (maybe even next week but not nesesary as both have noce games ) Auba for a long term.
It's basically -2 and a lottery ticket for points.

But you're going to have to transfer him out next week, and possibly for a hit again, if there are other issues in your team, like a bunch of B'mouth and H'field players.

in my case no. Got 2FT (one will be probably Stan) so will get free and sell next week (or not) for Auba also free. Only if I decide to get Mahrez too I will take a hit. Still think its a good way to play it. Will WC GW 33 but still my teams looks ok for GW 32 (with Mahrez and Auba there plus 3 Liv, Hudd also nice fix).

I've got 2 FT too, but I don't have a full squad now, and I see other ways I could use a transfer after the blank GW, and like to prepare for urgent needs (injuries, suspensions) as well. This kind of transfer is essentially just wasting 2 FT's on 1 transfer, and it can be worth it sometimes, but here I just doubt that it really is worth it.

Oh, I just understood now what you meant.

So, actually, that's -8 worth of transfers to replace an injured player, just because you want to have somebody this week. That's exactly what I meant.

Of course, it's likely you get a 2 pointer even if your new forward blanks, and we're comparing to a real 0 point blank. But still, you have to make the other transfer for the next GW.

What I'm thinking of, is just doing the other transfer next GW, and dealing with those parts of my squad now where I can buy some permanent replaces who have a fixture this GW.

Actually, the reason to wait until the transfer deadline day is to avoid all injuries, not just matches. Stoich there is definitely not the only one using that strategy in general. I almost never do a transfer before the deadline day.

I own Wilson, Depoitre and will likely be going Kane to Mounie/King. unless I get rid of a current liverpool player to get Firmino in. If I don't go Firmino and stick Mane, salah,VVD I am swaying towards King to partner wilson and Depoitre. Will look like this:

      Alonso,kdb,kane > Baines,Stanislas,King -4

      Pickford
      Baines, VVD
      Salah,Mane,Shaqiri,Stanislas,Walcott

I'd say the 0.1 on Son in negligible at this stage of the season, so it's down to whether you think it's worth a 2 point hit.

I had a 30 + point gain with mine also...was played in the week spurs and west ham had the double GW. However as i only had arnie and lazanni in the free hit team i missed out on there double digit hauls the week after basically undoing my 30+ point gain from the free hit.

Use this GW's on a players who's got a game, then concentrate on getting in players from teams with a game in both GW34 and GW35 (Swansea and City are likely) before using WC in GW36 for GW37 BB, TC in GW34 if you also still have that.

This is exactly what I had originally planned. Hoping for some favourable results in the FA cup this weekend mainly Leicester to beat Chelsea meaning they will have a double in GW34 and a game in GW35. Arsenal are another team I intend to target as they fall into this bracket too and with Aubu not playing in the Europa he is surely a must as a Kane replacement. Thanks

    It isn't not a 2 point hit!!
    It's four!!!

What if they get a red card for example. Or injured in the first 20 mins like Kane was.

Hits are only effective if the player are likely to haul. Should they blank and you get 2 points, you need to be keeping these players more than one gameweek.

Hits are not a good idea for this gameweek.

No you dont if you WC them out next week.

It's not -2 point per se but effectively it is. Or at least hiighly likely to be. Perfect week to take couple gamboools.

a possibility of red card is same as a brace for player like King etc so as I see it its kind -2 BUT this rule is different for a def imo and I would think twice before get a def for a hit

You could say the same thing though if you got in a defender and a attacker for a minus 4.
You're lying to yourself if you say the "minus 2 hit" is for the attacker.

Unless it's a Liverpool player. Then yeah I suppose it's worth the gamble. But most of these "-2 hits" are for Bornemouth/hudds players.

True, but it's not the same impact as a normal gameweek as you are gaining two points back by the other player not playing. Usually the person you take out would play, so you would need a far greater return to balance out the hit.

      Why so wound up?

Player you are booting out definitely getting a 0

Player you put in (assuming nothing untoward happens) gets a minimum of 2 pts. Your last statement does not give weight to your argument. You’re saying the player might get injured or carded but what if he gets a couple of goals or a penalty save?

That’s what it’s all about. Get the lottery ticket for a minimum of -2.

I've noticed a few questions recently on strategy for those of us who have used Free Hit already, but still have Wildcard, BB and TC in the pocket, so I just thought I would share my plans:
I have gone heavy on GW31, so I will be wildcarding straight away in GW32. An alternative strategy would be to WC33 if you can field a decent 11 in GW32 without wildcard, and use your FT on something like Aubameyang (and possibly captain).
In my wildcard, the final few places in my team will be determined by the FA Cup results this weekend, as I will need to ensure that I can field a full 11 in GW35 when the FA Cup semi finals are played. My plan is WC32, save FT 33, use 1 FT 34 and roll over 2 FT into GW35 (to ensure I field 11). In my WC I will likely have triple Arsenal (Mustafi, Mkhi, Auba) and probably a couple of City (unless Swansea cause an upset in the FA Cup, in which case MCI v SWA will be a blank in GW35), a couple of Burnley probably with decent fixtures, a DGW and a guaranteed game in 35. Salah will mostly remain throughout despite the lack of blanks.

In short, the strategy is there, but the personnel will be decided by the FA Cup fixtures. Because of the Intl Break, all the doubles should be decided by the time GW32 kicks off, so I will have a full picture by this point

People without a WC are ignoring 31 blank fodder and using their FT planning for DGW34. A free transfer to get a player like Lukaku with two double game weeks on the cards, or Mounie with one game less overall and a low chance of scoring between now and the end of life ?

Seems that some clever bods are ignoring FFS group think and planning beyond the end of their nose ? 😉

But surely, surely you would hold fire before bringing in a player who doesn't play a league fixture for 17+ days? Especially as he has potentially three other fixtures in that time? Even if you weren't going for GW31 fodder, why the need to move so soon??

Kane drops, Lukaku or Auba rises ... that’s a .2 that might price you out, or even double rises/drops ... more than one way to skin a cat 🙂

But if nobody makes the foolish/irresponsible moves to bring these guys in while they have non-FPL games to play, you only suffer the Kane drops. And the only Kane drops should come from guys bringing in GW31 fodder.

Basically you argue FFS groupthink, but people wouldn't be shipping Kane to avoid the drop if it wasn't for other people dropping Kane to avoid the drop. It becomes self-fulfilling...

If it wasn’t bad enough not having my WC it is now with Kane out and all that extra money waiting to be spread out. I would have a field day with a WC now 😉

Need a forward who plays this week, who is nailed, who isn't Firmino, who could feasibly get a return. It's a pure one week punt as playing WC next week but can't sit and watch Kane drop and drop with Lukaku rising too.

    Mounie?
    Wilson? (ewwww)
    King?
    Bentekkers?
    Tosun?

King is the one I really want. I could go for Zaha and Wilson/King or Stanislas and Mounie?

An option, but ewwww double Bournemouth. Might do King in for Kane tonight to avoid the drop and then think about whether to go Stan/Zaha in for Rambo as we get closer to Saturday pm
