Chelsea are knocked out of the Champions League, as expected, but their performance in Barcelona is a reminder that their key players still have much to give as the season nears its completion.

The 3-0 scoreline flattered Barca as individual errors – in particular from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois – scuppered an otherwise excellent team showing by the Blues, who out-shot their opponents 14-8.

Coach Antonio Conte made two changes from the side that beat Crystal Palace at the weekend, with Antonio Rudiger and Victor Moses replacing Gary Cahill and Davide Zappacosta.

That meant a second straight start up front for Olivier Giroud at the expense of Alvaro Morata, who only replaced him after 67 minutes last night, which in turn could be a significant development if the 1.5%-owned Frenchman retains his place for Chelsea’s domestic run-in.

Giroud’s inclusion has brought a genuine balance to the attack, freeing up Eden Hazard and, in particular, Willian.

The Brazilian was again excellent at the Nou Camp, firing in two shots and causing the home defence all manner of issues with his direct running.

Hazard was more subdued, but still managed three attempts and produced two key passes as Chelsea offered a consistent threat throughout the match despite going a goal down in just the third minute.

The most likely Chelsea player to score on the night, however, was Marcos Alonso.

The wing-back hit the post with a free-kick, one of a match-high four shots he had in an eye-catching attacking performance.

Blues defenders have been consistently sold by Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers during a six-Gameweek spell in which they’ve kept just one clean sheet.

Alonso has been no exception – he’s lost around 400,000 owners in that time frame – but his offensive threat remains undeniable, and it would be a surprise if he is not part of many Wildcard plans despite his budget-busting 7.2 price tag.

Short-term, there is little Fantasy interest in any of Conte’s players, however.

They have a blank Gameweek 31 as they’ll face Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals and follow that up with a huge home match against Spurs once the international break is done.

After that, though, their assets should return to our radars.

If Chelsea get past the Foxes and into the cup semi-finals, they’ll have two double Gameweeks to come.

The first, likely to be in Gameweek 34, would involve trips to Southampton and Burnley, while the second would probably feature home matches with Liverpool and Huddersfield in Gameweek 37.

Fixtures at home to West Ham and away at Swansea City and Newcastle round out their generally attractive league schedule.

On paper, Chelsea’s form – they’ve lost three of their last four matches in all competitions – doesn’t warrant investment in their players.

But the defeats came against both Manchester sides and Barca, all away from home, and last night’s performance was as positive a showing as a 3-0 defeat can be.

The defence remains a concern and Hazard’s 10.6 price means he can’t afford too many more off days – he’s served up consecutive blanks in the league – if he is to find a way into our Wildcard midfields.

Willian (7.0), however, offers value and fine form, while Alonso has the potential to deliver returns at both ends of the pitch – since returning from a two-match absence in Gameweek 28, only the Brazilian and Giroud have fired in more attempts than the wing-back’s six.

And if he continues to be handed starts by Conte, Giroud could be an interesting differential option up front, particularly as Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero are currently injured, and the latter is likely to be a rotation risk when Man City finally wrap up the league title and can concentrate fully on their Champions League ambitions.

Yeah we did actually, hit the post 4 times over the tie created more chances than Barca, and put in a good account for ourselves. Unfortunate to lose.

If you can’t see that then you don’t understand football.

fully understand the game cheers just not sure it’s impressive in any way losing 3-0. Yes we had chances but they were not taken were they. Also our LWB looking like our best outlet can’t be a good thing can it?

14 shots admittedly only 3 on target- but hit the woodwork.
44% possession in the Nou Camp which is pretty high.

3 defensive mistakes and 3 ruthless finishes apart from that I don't think there was a lot between the two teams.

I'm undecided as to what to make of last night.. does it mean Chelsea are going to be going all out in the league to make sure of CL or will the players not give a flying knowing that Conte is off anyway and the top ones such as Hazard can get a move to CL sides across Europe?

And I've held Alonso for ages.. it's no obvious to me I should be holding after WC'ing given his poor returns. "Nearly" scoring and getting CS's isn't really enough for a player of his cost.

Maybe wc in 33 would make more sense so that the Chelsea spurs game has gone. I ll stick to 32 though

Its hard to say for sure as Chelsea have a recent history of throwing in the towel when they're not arsed, they even managed it for an entire season once!

However their performance last night was actually very impressive and they were the better team for large parts of the match. They'll take a lot of encouragement from that. I think they will keep performing unless they fall so far off 4th place that they can't qualify for the CL.

Alonso hasn't reall changed recently. Its just that the woodwork keeps being hit whereas before they were going in. He's still the most attacking defender in the game, and with Chelsea being out of europe, nailed on.

I'm taking a couple of hits this week - but only by selling bench fodder (RLC and Mbemba).

That way I can take a few punts, without de-stabilising my team for next week, and in Stanislas' case, hopefully improving it.

He should yeah no doubt, but we’ve been saying this for about 3 years now or whenever that Mirallas incident took place. Fact is he seems happy to let others take them. He’ll probably want Tosun to get on the scoresheet, I’ve heard him say as much in past interviews, how it’s important for strikers to keep ticking over and how he’s not that arsed about them. But yeah he should be on them. Too nice for his own good Sir Leighton.

Unfortunate to be knocked out I feel, however I’m proud of my teams performance and the attitude they showed till the final whistle. We couldn’t have done much more over the 2legs, they where very clinical.

how do you feel about Courtois? i really felt he was in that top tier of goal keeper with de gea but I dont think hes progressing as much and is definitely way behind him now (and ederson to). I think a very hight chance De gea saves both those messi shots yesterday. Both him and Lloris for me havent really stepped up and the mistakes are gradually creeping in more and more each season

Yeah I agree with you, he should have done better, he isn’t in great form as you say and isn’t in that top tier of goalkeepers at the moment. We have just got to hope he improves I guess.

Unfortunate that him Christensen Fabregas all made some pretty bad errors that normally wouldn’t happen and cost us badly, but that’s football I guess, credit to Barca for capitalising

i genuinely think Barca coaching staff told players this was not a strong part of Courtois's game and to try a few surprise shots as they may go right through him

Completely agree, definitely wasn't as big a gap as the scoreline suggests. Its just a shame about some horrendous sunday league level defending gifting all 4 goals across the tie.

can anyone tell me what Willian cant do that Hazard can? Willian was the player that stood out and if you had know idea who was the 100m + euro player everybody wants in the team and you watched both legs you would say it was him. there isnt a more underrated player in world football and that portion of the season where he was in and out of the team (for no apparent reason from what I saw) may have been costly for Chelsea and Conte

Absolutely! I’m fed up of hazard always trying fancy flicks. Much prefer Willian’s direct approach, usually with a shot on the end of it. Hazard needs to take note! William has been my favourite Chelsea player for years, criminal that he hasn’t been in the team. I know his mum died but that was a while ago now I’m not sure what that may or may not of had something to do with him not starting earlier in the season

True, must suck being a Man U fan and going out at home to sevilla.

I'm a bit dissapointed with Courtois as can't help but feel a lot of keepers would've stopped those two goals

I'm actually tipping Juve as a dark horse. That or Man city.

Liverpool: at this level you can't just all out attack and try to outscore teams, defensive frailties will be exposed

Real: their defending has been poor this year and there are times where their selfishness as individuals costs them

Barca: exposed by Chelsea at times, especially on the wings they simply aren't the same dominant force they used to be

Roma and Sevilla: simply don't think they have the capability to compete with the others in the competition, although roma yet to concede at home in ucl this year and sevilla just knocked out Man U so could still make for interesting ties.

      Best ties?

      Roma vs Sevilla
      Barca vs Man City
      Juve vs Liverpool
      Bayern vs RM

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Which Chelsea players will be in your team for the season run in and why?

Are the likes of Hazard and Alonso overpriced? Or worth their high price tags?

Can Willian finally nail down a starting berth?

What of Christensen? Looks nailed on - but is his notorious history of not turning up/finishing matches preying on your mind?

Alonso and probably Willian. I've come round to the little Brazilian as Hazard really busts the budget and there's not really room for him + Salah + Son + Mahrez + Lukaku + Aubameyang

Currently just Alonso for me. Willian could edge his way in if I think he will start.

Hazard is a great option but I can't get past him being around 2m overpriced. Mahrez, Son, Sane, Silva, Sterling, Salah (for those who bought early)...all far better value.

I think Lukaku is overpriced too - currently not in my draft wildcard team. Aubameyang, Vardy, Firmino all better priced...although arguably the Arsenal man should be 0.5 to 1m lighter.

Agree that Lukaku is overpriced- it's just who else would you get for a United attacker- so uninspiring / expensive / not nailed. He does seem to have upped his game a little bit in the last few weeks as well.

I know! V annoying isn't it...esp as their double looks good.

Currently got DDG in my WC draft. I guess a player like Valencia could offer a nice double up -chance of cs, plus attacking returns and bonus for around half the price.

I'm thinking this. Valencia may be more nailed than Alonso who has had very disappointing returns since I brought him in. He also offers greater CS potential.
If Willian was nailed, which as a football fan, I think he should be, he is part of my WC plans alongside Son, Silva & Mahrez. They all offer better value than Hazard & KDB. KDB is in my current team but seems to play deeper with Silva in the team who seems to be back full-time now.
Hazard trolls me every time I bring him in (only my second season).

Totally agree that Willian should play every game for Chelsea! Last night he was one of the best on the pitch. Valencia is an interesting call alongside DDG. KDB is in mine as well. I got him in for the hat trick of assists and since he's done nothing just like the other time I owned him GW1-3, he will be leaving to fund the explosive 8-9m mid line up I plan.

          Mahrez 8.8 - 161 pts
          Son 8.2 - 154 pts

Obviously a player of Hazard's stature would never be 8.5.

But as FPL managers we have to compare him to those scoring similar or more points. If they are doing better than him for 2m less then to FPL managers that's what he is really worth.

In terms of points per match

Salah, Sterling, KDB, Silva and Mahrez all have offered more or broadly similar...all cheaper (Salah's value based on original buying cost).

With Kane out, Hazard potentially becomes an affordable option. Personally think Willian looks better though, and is nailed now. Will be going with Alonso and Willian from 33 onwards.

At the moment - Alonso and Willian.

Alonso is the most attacking defender in the game. There's not much to say about him that hasn't been said. You just had to watch him last night to know why.

Willian offers fantastic value at 7m. He is in fantastic form at present, and in my opinion playing even better than Hazard. For a 3.5m price difference between the 2 there can only be one winner.

If I knew Giroud was nailed on he would be a good pick at his price too. I should probably consider Christensen too but I'm still too scarred by that cursed man.

Christensen and Willian. In an ideal worth it would be Alonso instead of Christensen but with BB etc. budgets will be stretched.

Willian in team anyway steals a lot of Haz's points - he's very direct and in form of his life.

I've been an Alonso owner for a while, and he has been frustrating this season because the clean sheets are few and far between. The pros are obvioys: His attacking threat is unparalleled and he's a joy to own because he basically lives in the opposition's box. But in the short term I'd understand holding off on him until the doubles (you need him for them, because of fun).

Outside of him, Willian is tempting, as is Hazard - but won't touch either until the doubles I don't think.

The issue with the Chelsea mids is the wealth of options elsewhere (esp. if you're wildcarding). Son, Sterling/Silva/Sane, Mkhi, Salah all look more tempting currently - there may just not be space.

Outside bet for a DGW - Giroud. If you're chasing and the fixtures are nice he could be a great differential. Punt obviously, but worth considering.

I currently own both Hazard & Alonso and they havent been performaing at all in recent GWs, except for that one Hazard haul.

Alonso looked very lively vs Barca.
Christensen also seems like a good option with his price. Seems nailed.
Willian also looks more or less nailed right now.

So, it's between those three, but I'm mostly leaning towards Alonso.

Azpi and Hazard who I currently have are both overpriced and unreliable, so I'll be getting rid.

Taking a hit is nearly always a punt, but which gw31 players do we feel are worthy of the risk?

I would probably go for (excluding Liverpool players):

    Stanislas
    Zaha
    Baines
    Coleman
    PVA

On their day, all capable of a double digit score. All capable of a 1 or 2 pointer too, of course. But their upside makes them worth considering.

Stanislas the only one out of those.

Hits are fun, and this is the week for them. I've taken a -4 but I'd go -8 if I needed to. I'd take a risk on those top three - Baines and Stan the two that peak my interest.

Exactly the two that I'm considering most too - especially as they would be replacing RLC and Mbemba and therefore wouldn't be de-stablising my side.

And in the case of Stanislas, would improve my team next gameweek too (wildcarding in 33)....

      Stan and Baines.

Though I'm tempted to have Shaqiri too but perhaps Eve def will be better now with you know who.

Yeah think you're right, fedup of all the build-up just want it to start and then be over

So that we can return to normality.

        WC'ing should be fun.

So looking forward to it, fascinating and the season will either kick-on or collapse badly for many a FPL player 🙂

Plus the FA Cup upsets and the spreading of the blanks over 4 game weeks - marvellous 🙂

Any Liverpool fans here know what is happening with Joe Gomez?

He has been stinking up my bench for weeks!

He dropped down the pecking order when trent came in with a string of good performances while Gomez was injured. He is fit now and there will be some rotation. Have a feeling Gomez will start vs Watford.

King or Mounie? I'll get Stanislas, and I already have Pritchard.

He's not injured at the moment, and I can't see Defoe and Wilson both starting. I just guess he'll start.

    Have only 5 players and 1FT. 🙁

    Thinking this
    Kane / Albrighton / Lingard > Mounie / Mané / Stanislas for -8.

    Y or N

Will give me these 8 for -8.

        Schindler (Kenny)
        Walcott Salah Mané Stanislas
        Wilson Mounie Firmino

        Any more hits to improve?
        For Shaqiri or Baines?

Well you can't take a hit for Shaqiri since you already have 7 attackers.

Baines is probably worth it, if you read my hot topic from yesterday I think even Butland might be worth it (but it's close).

I'll be taking a -8 this week for Butland and King/Mounie.

Haha! Good point! Well I rate Eve def more than WBA so i will stick with Stan. 🙂

I'd like to do Adrien > Butland too but a -12! Eek

I think so baps lover. Even though -8 is a lot, those guys could very well make up the difference and exceed it cos you’re getting a stud in Mane and arguably the best non pool attacker from which to choose. Mounie is the only ? given Huddersfields lack of consistent attacking potency.

        Thanks man. Appreciate the comments.
-8 is a lot but if they all play that's approx 6 points back so I really only need one of them to get a goal or assist to have it pay off.
        Fingers crossed it works out!!

I decided it was more fun to take hits this week. Usually would never take more than -4 but took -8 this week to field a team of 10 - bring it on!

Here are the X Men (as in 10) for GW31. Decided to punt on a couple of hits to maximise chance of points. Hoping they don't end up being the 10 Plagues. I think the best part about pressing "Confirm team" was seeing I had £10.3m itb 😀

    Lossl
    VVD, Tomkins (, Fernandez)
Salah (C), Stanislas (V), Shaq, Mili
    Firmino, King, Mounie

    (DDG) (Duffy, Siggy, Alonso)

Clearly planning WC GW32. Looking ok?

On a free hit, how am I looking? 9.7 still ITB

    Butland (3.9)
    VVD Baines PvA (Schindler A.Smith)
Salah (c) Shaqiri Stanislas Zaha (Van La Parra)
    Firmino King Mounie

    Cheers
