Line-up Lessons – Gameweek 31 – Part Two

Mark Hughes rolls out a 4-4-2 in his first match in charge of Southampton. Son Heung-min leads the line in Harry Kane’s absence as Spurs clinch a place in the FA Cup semi-finals, while Paul Lambert freshens up his back-four for Stoke’s clash with Everton.

After checking out the first team teams yesterday, we turn to part two of Line-up Lessons, assessing the teamsheets and formations from Gameweek 31 and the FA Cup quarter-finals, with one eye on what’s to come after the international break as we look to Gameweek 32 and the upcoming European matches.

Manchester United

Starting XI: Romero; Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Shaw (Young 46); McTominay, Matic; Mata (Rashford 74), Lingard (Fellaini 89), Martial; Lukaku. Subs not used: De Gea, Lindelof, Pogba, Sanchez.

  • What we saw: Jose Mourinho named a fairly strong side for the FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton, although Sergio Romero and Luke Shaw were handed rare starts in the usual 4-2-3-1 formation while both Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez were relegated to the bench. Mourinho decided to make a tactical change at half-time, with Ashley Young replacing Shaw at left-back.
  • What we learned: With a home fixture against Swansea City in Gameweek 32, Pogba and Sanchez, in particular, should return to the teamsheet. If Mourinho sticks with a 4-2-3-1, Pogba will be competing with Scott McTominay and Marouane Fellaini for a start at the base of midfield. Sanchez, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata appear to be battling it out for three spots, and perhaps only two positions should Mourinho deploy a 4-3-3 to incorporate Pogba alongside McTominay and Nemanja Matic. Sanchez, Lingard and Rashford may be favoured against the Swans. Young will return at left-back given Mourinho’s latest criticism of Shaw’s performances, while the international break could allow Phil Jones to return to full fitness, and possibly push again for a start in central defence.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, central midfield, flanks, attacking midfield

Southampton

Starting XI: McCarthy; Cedric Soares, Stephens, Hoedt, Bertrand; Hojbjerg, Lemina; Tadic, Boufal (Redmond 65), Carrillo (Long 82); Gabbiadini (Romeu 88). Subs not used: Yoshida, Ward-Prowse, Sims, Forster.

  • What we saw: New Saints boss Mark Hughes decided to stick with many of the players who had been playing regularly under former manager Mauricio Pellegrino for his first match in charge against Wigan Athletic. Notably, he did deploy a 4-4-2 formation, however, pairing Guido Carrillo and Manolo Gabbiadini up front. Dusan Tadic and Sofiane Boufal were handed starts out wide, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Mario Lemina were preferred to Oriol Romeu in central midfield. Holding a 2-0 lead in the FA Cup quarter-final, Hughes decided to introduce Romeu late on, seeing Southampton finish the match in a more defensive 4-5-1.
  • What we learned: Given the victory on Sunday, Hughes is likely to stick with the majority of the same starting XI. So Carrillo and Gabbiadini may form the front pairing for the crucial Gameweek 32 trip to West Ham United. Redmond is a possible alternative out wide, perhaps most likely in place of Boufal, while Romeu may have to again settle for a place on the bench. James Ward-Prowse is another who could remain among the substitutes. Maya Yoshida returned to the bench last weekend, and is a possible alternative in central defence, while Alex McCarthy looks set to be favoured over Fraser Forster in goal once again.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, flanks, forwards

Stoke City

Starting XI: Butland; Johnson, Zouma, Shawcross, Stafylidis; Ndiaye, Adam, Allen; Shaqiri (Berahino 76), Crouch, Sobhi (Choupo-Moting 72, Jese Rodriguez 79). Subs not used: Haugaard, Bauer, Martins Indi, Fletcher.

  • What we saw: Paul Lambert rolled out his favoured 4-1-4-1 system for the home clash against Everton, although he did make a host of changes following the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City. Peter Crouch was recalled in the lone striker role, while Ramadan Sobhi returned on the left side of midfield. Charlie Adam earned a rare start in central midfield. At the back, experienced duo Ryan Shawcross and Glen Johnson started in place of Bruno Martins Indi and Moritz Bauer respectively. But following Adam’s first-half sending off, the Potters lined up in more of a 4-1-3-1 formation. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored after coming on as a second-half substitute but was injured in the act of scoring, with Jese Rodriguez then taking over on the left side of midfield.
  • What we learned: Adam will now serve a three-match suspension, starting with the Gameweek 32 trip to Arsenal. Geoff Cameron missed out last weekend due to a hamstring problem, but he will be the Scot’s likely replacement providing he’s passed fit. Darren Fletcher offers another option in the middle of the park. If available, Choupo-Moting could come in for Sobhi, while the two-week break should mean Mame Biram Diouf (shoulder) is fit for the trip to the Emirates. He would be the favourite to replace Crouch as the lone striker, with Choupo-Moting, Jese Rodriguez and Saido Berahino other possibilities. Bauer was somewhat surprisingly left out of the starting XI, but he may come back in for Johnson at right-back, while Shawcross could keep his place in central defence.

Current Status: Unsettled
Risk Areas: Right-back, central defenders, central midfield, left wing, lone striker

Swansea City

Starting XI: Nordfeldt; van der Hoorn (Roberts 80), Bartley, Mawson; Naughton (Narsingh 46), Ki Sung-yueng, Carroll, Olsson; Dyer (Routledge 86), Abraham, Clucas. Subs not used: Mulder, Fernandez, Britton, Byers.

  • What we saw: Carlos Carvalhal was forced into making changes for the FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur. With Jordan Ayew suspended, Tammy Abraham started up front in the 5-4-1 formation, while Nathan Dyer and Tom Carroll earned starts due to Andre Ayew and Andy King being cup-tied. The Swans boss also chose to hand rests to Lukasz Fabianski and Federico Fernandez, allowing Kristoffer Nordfeldt and Kyle Bartley to start. With his side trailing 2-0, Carvalhal decided to switch to more of a 4-3-3, with substitute Luciano Narsingh (right) and Dyer (left) flanking Abraham in attack. Mike van der Hoorn moved to right-back, while Sam Clucas played as part of the three-man midfield.
  • What we learned: With a trip to Manchester United up next in Gameweek 32, Carvalhal looks set to continue with the defensive 5-4-1 system. Andre Ayew and King should both come back into the side, most likely at the expense of Dyer and Carroll. Alternatively, Andre Ayew could start as the lone striker in place of Abraham, with Dyer retaining his start on the right side of midfield. Renato Sanches is closing in on a first-team return, and may soon be able to return to the bench to provide another midfield option.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, right wing, lone striker

Tottenham Hotspur

Starting XI: Vorm; Trippier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier, Sissoko; Lucas Moura (Llorente 73), Lamela (Alli 81), Eriksen; Son Heung-min. Subs not used: Lloris, Aurier, Alderweireld, Foyth, Dembele.

  • What we saw: Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino also opted to make some changes for the trip to Swansea. Back-up players such as Michel Vorm, Moussa Sissoko, and Lucas Moura all earned starts, while regulars such as Hugo Lloris, Mousa Dembele and Dele Alli dropped to the bench. Son Heung-min was favoured as the lone striker over Fernando Llorente in the 4-2-3-1 system. The South Korean ended the match on the left wing after Llorente was brought on for Lucas.
  • What we learned: With a trip to Chelsea up next in Gameweek 32, and following their UEFA Champions League exit, Pochettino will name his strongest possible starting XI. Son should retain his start as the lone striker in Harry Kane’s continued absence, then, meaning Erik Lamela may well keep his place in the side in one of the attacking midfield positions. Dembele should return alongside Eric Dier in the double-pivot, with the only contentious area in the starting XI perhaps being at right-back, where Serge Aurier could be preferred to Kieran Trippier. Should Toby Alderweireld feature for Belgium over the international break, he may come under consideration to replace Davinson Sanchez in central defence.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Right-back, central defenders

Watford

Starting XI: Karnezis; Mariappa, Holebas, Britos (Janmaat 81); Femenia, Doucoure, Capoue, Prodl; Pererya, Deeney (Okaka 70), Richarlison (Hughes 65). Subs not used: Gomes, Cathcart, Carrillo, Gray.

  • What we saw: After losing 3-0 to Arsenal using an attacking 4-2-3-1 formation, Javi Gracia decided to switch to a three-man defence for the trip to Liverpool. Miguel Britos was handed a recall in the back three, while Kiko Femenia and Jose Holebas played as wing-backs in the 3-4-3 system. Roberto Pereyra (right) and Richarlison (left) flanked central striker Troy Deeney. The Hornets ended the match in more of a 4-2-3-1, with Daryl Janmaat at right-back, Femenia on the right wing and Will Hughes joining Pereyra in the attacking midfield spots.
  • What we learned: Given that Watford host Bournemouth in Gameweek 32, it’s likely that Gracia will revert back to his preferred 4-2-3-1 system. Femenia could be an option to start on the right wing, which would allow Janmaat to come in at right-back. Alternatively, Hughes or Andre Carrillo may join Pereyra and Richarlison in the advanced midfield positions. Britos could be the centre-back to make way. The international break should allow Tom Cleverley (hamstring) to move closer to a first-team return, and if available, he is a viable starter in both central midfield and the No 10 position.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Right-back, central defenders, flanks, attacking midfield

West Bromwich Albion

Starting XI: Foster; Dawson, Evans (Phillips 77), Hegazi; Nyom, Livermore, Yacob, Brunt (Field 82), Gibbs; Rodriguez (Robson-Kanu 86), Rondon. Subs not used: Myhill; Burke, Krychowiak, McClean.

  • What we saw: Alan Pardew switched to a 3-5-2 formation for the trip to Bournemouth, pairing Salomon Rondon and Jay Rodriguez up front. Claudio Yacob was recalled in central midfield in place of Grzegorz Krychowiak, while Jonny Evans returned from illness to start in the back three. Allan Nyom and Kieran Gibbs took up the wing-back roles. Evans was replaced on 77 minutes due to cramp, making way for Matt Phillips. The substitute played at right wing-back, with Nyom moving inside to join Craig Dawson and Ahmed Hegazi in the three-man backline.
  • What we learned: Following an improved performance, and given Rondon and Rodriguez combined for Albion’s goal, Pardew may well retain the 3-5-2 for the home meeting with Burnley in Gameweek 32. That would make changes unlikely, with Gareth Barry a possible starter in central midfield if he recovers from a knock. Sam Field and Krychowiak are other options in the middle of the park. Phillips is a more attacking alternative to Nyom at right wing-back, while if they are back in contention following injuries, James Morrison, Nacer Chadli and Daniel Sturridge could all feature, most likely from the bench.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Right wing-back, central midfield

Thoughts on this lot for a wildcard:

    Pope | Ryan
    Alonso | Davies | Robertson | Chilwell | VDH
    Salah | Sterling | Mahrez | Son | Ki Sung-Yueng
    Aubameyang | Firmino | Murray

No Utd defense might hurt. Cant see Davies playing both the doubles. Robo a rotation risk due to CL matches. Chilwell rotation risk due to Fuchs. Sterling rotation risk due to playing for City. What are the plans re: Kane, Lukaku and Vardy?

Trouble with Davies is I bought at 5.6m so can't get another Spurs defender at that price. Chilwell is cheap and has been playing at LM as well as LB, playing most matches.

Not too bothered about Lukaku, he rarely scores more than 1, Kane when he's back I'll work in.

Fixtures are nothing to write home about with Spurs. Might even happen that Davies only plays the harder fixtures. Yeah, but you never know with Chilwell. Fuchs aint that bad so its always one mistake from being dropped for good.

      Any reason why?

He's in my draft at the moment. Some Aresenal fans yesterday seemed to think he's pretty sure of starts and, for the fixtures, he is *very* keenly priced.

It's like waiting for a really important delivery from the postman. You can't get anything else substantial done in the meantime. I just need the info (and, ideally, RMT updated pronto!) so I can resolve a few outstanding issues and then carry on with my life, which is currently on hold and making me feel bad.

Don’t think it makes much difference to be honest. I was going to wait until 33 to WC, but I figured why miss out on the team I want because of price changes, and the prospect of a much bigger points haul in 32 as well. I will be playing the FH in 37, as TC is already gone on Kane. Feeling pretty good

What was the point chasing Silva's price rise if the City DGW is in GW 37? Just an example. Plenty other scenarios there.

We know the teams but don't know when so it's a bit pointless.

Then you could have just kept them and FH in GW 34 so that you get those Everton,Palace and Stoke assets back for the BGW 35. WC in 36 and BB in 37 and you'd be sorted.

I'm not telling them what to do.

I'm just stating the various options. Keeping options open.

What option I chose depends on the scheduling.

Those on WC anyway can't change anything now. So my telling them won't have much effect.

Bournemouth attackers can score against anyone. Plus you need cheap fillers on WC as the Burnley and Swansea DGW could be in 37 and thus no fillers from those sides would be available.

Wilson can't, King hasn't, Defoe could. Leaves Stan and pot luck of the other mids. Not really the stuff of wc fears.

I think the motivation for most GW32 wildcarders was taking out the trash after GW31. So long as I have an opportunity to react to the DGW fixtures while my wilcard is still active I'm not that fussed,

                I won't be 0.6m away.

Only Lukaku,Auba and Silva who are of DGW significance have risen. I have got one of the strikers in and don't want Silva due to rotation risk.

I'm just 0.1m behind WCers atm but would have complete DGW info when I press the button.

Moreover, price changes are gonna be stagnant af over the next 7 or so days.

The whole concept of "must have players" is a fallacy. There may be one or two but certainly not 12 or 15. 0.6m is so, so easy to find. It means compromising on one player at worst and the slightly cheaper choice can easily out-perform the more expensive one anyway over a short period.

I think by "must have" you maybe mean "copying everyone else", no? 🙄

But not playing for long enough to realise that there are very few "must-have" players?

The way people will try to scare others into wildcarding on the basis of price changes is scurrilous. It just doesn't stand up.

I wildcarded in GW28 and it didn't go well. But I don't know what that has to do with it either.

I questioned your "must have players" idea which made 0.6m so important to you. You haven't answered my points at all. So the only assumption I can make is that you are a copycat template manager. Which you probably are.

FISO - well, I doubt you have much idea about it to be honest. But maybe you can understand that popularity and upvotes are meaningless to me. Try addressing the actual issue. Or maybe admit that you made an idiot comment. Or neither. Really doesn't bother me that much. 🙂

And that one player could be difference between winning and losing a mini league. Maybe the difference between affording Alonso or not. You just never know. How many times have you been .1 short so you had to rejig your team to accomodate a player. If you are saying 'must have players are a fallacy'. Ask the guy who won it last year how he's getting on with out pool players

He won last year, didn't he? And I don't see the relevance of his predilections anyway.

Don't you get it that the cheaper player can out-perform the more expensive one? A lot took VVD over Robertson with GW31 in mind; there was a 0.7m difference. Who scored best over the 5 last weeks? Robertson 30 points, VVD 22. I guess Robertson would have been better for your ML prospects in that case. 😀

The more expensive player isn't necessarily the best. Often having the expensive ones is just a comfort blanket. Which brings us back to copying everyone else again. Maybe you are more prone to that than you think?

I'm not sure what is your point in this post or would you just like to provoke some kind of reaction from those who have openly expressed their preference to wildcard this week before this info? I can of course only speak for myself but feeling good to be on wildcard now and get rid of all the GW31 deadwood with all other chips still intact with also great score last week. FPL is also about adjusting and I think being on wildcard now won't lessen the ability to adjust if some significant occurs in that fixture rescheduling. Just deal with it then 😎

I'd rather adjust to the DGW fixtures with a WC in my back pocket rather than the button pressed. That's me though. Each to their own.

What's the correct strategy for using your WC if you don't have a freehit chip left to use in BGW35?

Potentially could have a lot of decent players missing, but I don't want BGW35 scuppering my chance of a big score in DGW34...

Completely depends on the fixtures. If 34/37 is expected, I am getting those who play x2 in 34 and in 35 would be the priority, with WC in 36

Well I used my FH last GW, and my team is alright for GW32 and GW33. My transfers will be used to build up a strong GW34 team, but not too strong (that would result in no players for GW35) 😉

I am looking to WC in GW36 to build a 100% strong DGW37 team and BB in that week.
TC will be played in GW34.

Quite happy with my WC-team 🙂
              Any suggestions for improvements?

              DDG Fabianski
              Monreal Morgan Lowton vdH Dummett
              Salah Son DSilva Mahrez Ki
              Auba Firmino Vardy

              FT: 0, ITB: 0.6

Here a few of the choices I took:
              - Dropped Willian because of DSilvas form
              - Ki instead of Kenedy because of Kis form and Kenedys potential fixtures of ARS+tot in GW34
              - Lowton instead of Mee because of form

              Concerns:
              - No CHE-cover in defence. Might consider Monreal -> Christensen. What do you think?
              - Just DDG as MUN-cover in defence. Should I get in Smalling? If yes, how?

Monreal a huge rotation risk. Check Arsenal congested fixtures
D Silva is so essential to City thay I am pretty sure he will be managed and protected for UCL. City lost one game this season (not counting Bâle) and it was at liverpool without Silva. So Silva will be the first name down Pep's light for the two UCL legs against Pool.

I think there really is an edge in WC in 33 given the fact that all of you WCded team much depends on Kane fitness actually.
Those who would have loaded up a big 4 or 5 midfield in 32 might have a tough time bringing kane in on DGW34 if he were to be passed fit.

One of the benefits of wildcarding in GW32 was to be able to carry 2FT into GW34, which allow plenty of scope for bringing Kane back if he is ready. GW33 wildcarders will have the same dilemma if he is on the verge of a return in mid-April.

Reports suggest he´s back for the double but what shape will he be in, and there is no certainty he even will be back for the first game. And the double is not the best either, City are good and Newcastle are tight and prob have something to play for. wildcard is also dependent on other things such as ones current team etc. Several routes to points imo. You may have a point but it could also turns out beneficial to do otherwise and play with the information we have at hand pr now.

If the DGWs fall as Ben Crellin has hypothesized and we have 2 DGWs in 34 and 37 who are you all considering captaining in GW 34?

              Lukaku
              Hazard
              Son
              Kane (if fit)
              Aubameyang
              Salah
              Vardy
              Firmino
              Alonso

Or any other maverick options anyone is thinking about?

Thinking about captaincy can help us establish whether or not Lukaku is worth the money. I think the majority will be in a position where they captain Salah GWs 32 and 33. If this is the case can we really justify Lukaku's 11.3 price tag if we aren't captaining him.

Are we better off spreading 6m (if we swapped to Barnes) into the rest of our team and affording the likes of De Gea, Alonso, Mustafi, A better 5th Midfielder like Arnautovic for e.g. and playing 3-5-2

If we think Lukaku may be the best captaincy option in the DGW its almost essential he makes the WC team I would say
