Earlier in the week, our recent series of Monitor members’ articles on Wildcard ran the rule over both Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Romelu Lukaku, the two most bought forwards ahead of Gameweek 32.

Next up in our assessment is Riyad Mahrez, the second most bought midfielder ahead of Leicester City’s expected pair of Double Gameweeks.

Despite finding himself out of favour in the early months – due to a lofty 8.5 opening price tag and disappointing previous season – the Algerian has turned back the clock to rediscover the heights of his dominant 2015/16 campaign.

Now sitting fourth among midfielders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with 161 points, Mahrez has proven himself to once again represent a consistent top-end choice. Meanwhile, double-digit hauls in successive Gameweeks underpin the Algerian’s explosive potential as a differential captaincy option for managers willing to swim against the tide.

With an incredibly obliging run to end the season – including two Double Gameweeks and a slew of favourable matchups (Leicester’s next six fixtures will match them against Brighton, Newcastle, Burnley, Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Ham) – the winger will be a staple among Wildcard squads.

Are you keeping the three arsenal for gw34?

Nah plan would be to downgrade Mkhi, and upgrade Auba to Lukaku or Kane.

Great team. I'd have a City mid instead of Willian to start then swap out but with 3 arsenal that's not easy.
Also I prefer monreal to mustafi.

GW 32 - right order of 11 and bench?

    De Gea
    Alonso Lowton Baily
    Salah Mikhi Willian Mahrez
    Murray Vardy Auba

    Subs: Ryan, Gudm, Morgan, Tark

    1) Wildcard in 32, BB 34, FH 35, TC 37.

    Pros:

    - Get the impact of the wildcard in more gameweeks.
    - Get players before they rise in price.
    - Allows the TC in a double.

    Cons:

    - If loading up on DGW34 players to use the BB, what about the 6 teams with a DGW in 37 but NOT in 34. The FH in 35 leaves just 2 FTs to get players from these 6 teams.

    - Apart from Leicester and Brighton, the teams with "double double" have mixed fixtures in 32, 33. Triple Man United versus City doesn't sound appealing, for instance.

    - Asking a heck of a lot from 1 early Wildcard to maximise 34 and 37 (especially with 6 DGW37 teams not playing in 34 and with limited info on how things will look in 2 to 5 weeks time).

    2) FH 34, WC 36, BB37. TC in 35 or 38.

    Pros:

    - Get the maximum amount of info.
    - Cherry pick the perfect team just before the double in 34.
    - Cherry pick yet another perfect team just before the bigger double in 37.
    - Let's you get Auba without worrying about his lack of a double in 34.
    - Keep hold of Liverpool's potent attackers.

    Cons:

    - TC in a single gameweek.
    - Have to drip feed in GW35 players over the next few weeks.
    - Can't go to town on absolutely any player you want in 35.

        Similarly:

        Cons against FH 34, WC 36, BB37. TC in 35 or 38.

        - TC in a single gameweek.
        - Weak GW35
        - TC in a single gameweek.
        - TC in a single gameweek.
        - Weak GW35

Specifically, "TC in 35" followed by TC in a single gameweek and weak GW35.

The pros are massive, though. Cherry-picking two custom teams right before each double is a devastating tactic.

Its putting everything into two peaks and accepting the massive troughs inbetween. Its very simple, do you want to consistently do well over the next seven weeks or do very well in two weeks?

I only need to get to 34 before I start activating chips. The "double double" players in the WC32 template have a mixed bag of fixtures in the next 2. Not very scary.

      1 for me!

More likely to get 15 BB nailed players now than 37 also less time holding the 15 players

Can create a team based on the dgw and narrow down to a strong 11 for 37 with TC

FH just saves the trouble and brings the most out of the doubles.

Exactly. Way easier to bb now when teams have more to play for.
I'm expecting 3-4 players to be rested in my 37 squad so the BB is negated.

I'll be handpicking the perfect, optimum 15 going into 37 ... while GW32 wildcarders will be scramble around taking hits and fiddling with their benches. Sounds appealing.

It's the cheaper more rotation prone players on the bench that I'm worried about, the big hitter will probably play at least one of the games.

Fpl is not easy. Mediocre managers do need simple strategies. Normal or at least above casual managers can manage their teams for five weeks.

BB prediction (sorry for long post)

When I look at my possible benech GW 34 (Ryan, Lowton, Dunk/Tarkowski, Ibe/Cork) I wonder how many points will they give me and how many points would I get if I would get some 3.9s and upgrade elsewhere.
(People also pick Cedric/Stephens, Stanislas, Gudmundsson, Gross, Murray, Barnes)

Ryan/Dunk (CP A, Spurs H) - CP look nice in last few games. They lost really unlucky vs Spurs, same vs ManU (scoring 2), scored vs Chel and won 2-0 last game. Actually they score at least 1 in almost every game. Spurs game is almost no chance for CS. Also they didnt get CS for last 9 games! Dunk has 1 goal.
Predicted points: 4-5 (save point is possible same as 1 pt vs Spurs)

Lowton/Tarkowski (Lei H, Chel H) - Lei look really good. Mahrez has nice form. Vardy also doesnt look bad too. They scored at least 1 goal (appart from Chel game) since GW 18! Chelsea game is also a low chance for CS. They got 2 CS in last 10 games so it's not same Bur as they were at the beggining of the season. Lowton has 3 assists, Tarkowski none.
Predicted points: 4 (slim chance for an assist for Lowton)

Cedric/Stephens (Chel H, Lei A) - same as above plus Sou is terrible. They got 2 CS since GW 10! Cedric 0 assist, 0 goals. Stephens 0 assist, 2 goals.
Predicted points: 3 (they will loose high in at least 1 game)

Gross/Murray (CP A, Spurs H) - As I said CP look quite ok but hardly keep a CS. Spurs will rather get CS vs them. Gross 3 assists and 1 goal in last 10 games ( 0, 0 away!) (8A,5G overall). Murray 6 goals in last 10 games (but only 1 away!), no assists (11G, 0A overall). They both have some chance for points but their away form is terrible. Not easy one.
Predicted points: 4-7 (question is which one gonna sneak a goal/assist..or both)

Cork/Gudmundsson/Barnes (Lei H, Chel H) - Lei look sharp but got only 3 CS in last 10 games. Chelsea can't keep CS in last few games too but would not count on that vs Bur. They dont score a lot (forget WHU). Gudmundsson scored 2 and got 2 assists in last 10 games (2G,7A overall) and Barnes got 3 goals, 0 assists in last 10 (6G,0A overall). Thing is that they both got some returns in last 2-3 games so that break came in no ideal time for them. Think one of them can deliver vs Lei. Cork is a classic 2 pointer.
Predicted points: 4-8 (maybe Gudmundssen assist to Barnes?)

Ibe/Stanislas (Liv A, ManU H) - worts callendar in DGW. Liv and ManU wont let them win. Also big possibility that they wont score even one in those games. Ibe 2 goals, 3 assists in his last 10 games (2G,6A overall) and Stanislas is better with 4goals and 2 assist in his last 10 (5G,3A overall).
Predicted points: 4 (sorry, don't see them do any damage vs those 2 teams)

So I predict that all cheap defs will give us about 4 pts. Maybe Bur/Bri attackers can deliver but it's questionable too. So now we need to ask at least 2 questions:

    1. If I go with one 3.9 def/GK or go with 3.9 def and 3.9 GK what can I do with that 0.6 or 1.2? Is it gonna give me more than 4 or 8 points?

2 Is picking Bur/Bri attackers is better than sticking to single GW players (Ars, City, Firmino etc) as money obv an issue but we must remember that it is not about to win GW34. Its about to get most points from now till GW38.Your team GW34 will be almost the same till the end. If using FH GW35 you can make only 3 transfers free till the end of the season

Great post. Definitely something we all must consider when assessing our own set ups.
Personally with so few transfers available after WC now, and FH35...trying to get Kane in will take one or two.. And the threat of rotation later in the season.. I'd rather keep my Burnley assets on the bench in case they need to sub in as their fixtures outside of DGWs arent bad at all.

If all four players on your bench play twice and get you just 4 points each, then that's 16 in total from your Bench Boost.

How many times have you had 16 points on your bench this season? Personally, I've had that many once, with 17 back in GW3.

There's a good chance that one of your cheap lottery tickets gets a clean sheet or an attacking return, and then you're looking at 20 points or more from the chip.

Great post, I agree that we shouldn't get our hopes up with teams like bri,bur or bou but how can we get ars, city, liv players in their place?
You would have to downgrade one of the "good" dgw players in order to have the funds and end looking at the same players you are trying to avoid.

Maybe if we could find sgw players in 34 in the same price range like J Ayew/A Ayew (eve) or Arnautovic (sto), if you can find the extra funds, but they are same level players from lower ranked teams just with 1 less game to play...

Think you’ve committed the fallacy of looking at the “most likely outcome” (i.e. the median) rather than expected returns (I.e. the mean). The distribution is right-skewed.

I'd rather see the "most likely outcome" than the average outcome. Take Wilson... he gets you 2 points every week while you wait for a hat-trick, not 2.5 points.

        1. JasonG123
          • 12 Years

So you want to pick players that in the long-run will get you less points?

          2+2+2+2+2+17 = 27 is greater than 4+4+4+4+4+4 = 24

Since we play over 38 weeks and over a number of seasons, we should only care about averages and trust that we'll be rewarded over time.

lol, stop twisting what I said. We're picking a player for a much shorter period, perhaps even a single week in terms of the FHC.

              • 12 Years

Not twisting anything, you still don’t understand what expected returns are.

It doesn’t matter if it’s one week or a whole season. Even when making one week decisions, since we play over a number of seasons picking according to expected return rather than median will get us more points over the long-run.

                I understand perfectly, thanks 🙂

I'm saying that I prefer an expected returns model using the median, rather than the mean. It helps me rule out those players with anomaly high returns for a single GW (maybe the opposition had injuries, or a red card, for example).

The main one I am considering is quaner over Barnes as is the difference to eg have lukaku/kane and a decent mid starting vs someone who over 8 weeks isn't gonna get much. So the sums are:

      A) Ramsey/arnie/willian for the 6 weeks + a quaner 1 pointer for bench boost

      B) Or the same with barnes in for gw34 but probably +4s either side

      C) have a cheaper mid like gross playing + Barnes available then for bench boost.

I'm not convinced a sub 6.5m mid over rest of season + barnes dgw
      > willian/arnie/Ramsey + 1 point

Maybe you'll say downgrade elsewhere but I think the same is true for vardy, mahrez, son, salah, alonso, ddg etc. -0.7m and you arguably lose more than 4/5 points

I'm probably wrong (and will relent at the last min) but just putting it out there

This is why I'm not fixated on getting 15 dgw players on my wildcard. Still going to bb in 34, just widening the net to include sgw players too.

Your point number 2 was exactly a point i made earlier last week, i eventually got slated as i made a stupid comparison of swapping out firminho for murray, but i think my point was missed!

      - why mess with your liverpool and arsenal players (even city players )when they have a single GWK but they could potentially still outscore all of the above players

im going for a mix of 6-7 DGWK's that i think are worth while and keeping a lot of my already proven points scorers.

Am I a fool for not taking on any City players?
Next two fixtures are Everton and Man Utd, both games id expect city to win. However my worry is rotation and jitters getting the title wrapped up.

City have to play united in between two legs with Liverpool. Now with Jesus back and sterling. I can see the proven city point scorers being rotated.

        Who do you go for?

Yea I’ve gone for sterling as I think he has most shots inside the box (besides aguero) , if I was doubling up I would probably go for sane but I think at this point 1 is probably enough

Looking at pep I don’t think there is anyway that he will let his players let up at least until GW33/34...so I’ll being sterling out then possibly

    Pick one from

    A Monreal
    B Mustafi

Monreal more attacking. Some views expressed here that Mustafi less likely to be rotated but Monreal playing well and hard to see Kola getting a game unless due to injury.

    And one from

    1 Smalling
    2 Bailly

Both possibly nailed as no sign of Jones return. Smalling more of goal threat from set pieces

I'm leaning towards keeping Firmino. At least for a couple of weeks. Better, more consistent player playing in a better team.It is a bit of a headache though due to the doubles. I'll probably transfer him out for Vardy before 34 if all else goes well.

You are all over thinking things.

This game is quite simple really.

A top 10k finish is won or lost with the most important WC of them all. The GW1 one.

You have a great history. Surely most, if not all of your high finishes involved a good start. I know mine have.
If you start poorly you're just pissing against the wind
With the huge increase in active players if, for example you are ranked 20k right now it would be quite an achievement to hit 10k even if you have all the chips.

So I don't think I'm completely incorrect. A little incorrect, maybe.

I remember my 1st gw1 of this game, I didn't know this site and I remember there were doubts over Drogba starting but I went with him anyway as well as Cole, Maluda.. I was ranked inside 1200 1st gw but proceeded to finish 1 of my worst finishes, of course the 100+ points taken in my maiden season didn't help 😀

Disagree with this. If you have all your chips, I think you could get from 20k (perhaps even 50k) to top 10k quite comfortably.

        3. Qubit
          • 16 Years

I honestly never get good starts, really annoying! This year I worked my way up but injuries, rotation and some poor decision making knocked me back down and I've had to fight back up, but not far enough, a top 10k finish not impossible but unlikely.

I think it's far far more important to be positioned well by the half way point. Beyond that it's increasingly difficult to make progress.

It definitely gets increasingly difficult to get higher as the season progresses, you are absolutely correct.
But I think the setting point is about GW8 ( ie, the fruits of your labour after that first WC in GW1 ) and not half way through as you suggest.
As Jarvish says below, a Ragabolly analysis on it would be very interesting.

            1. Qubit
              • 16 Years
              7 years, 9 months ago

Agreed, halfway point a bit late these days, I stuck it there for simplicity sake. Think gwk8 isn't late enough tho, the difference in rank still is quite small in points terms at that point so rank movements (up and down) are easier.

By gwk 5 I was still over 1mill just like gwk1. By gwk8 I was 140k, but by gwk14 up to 3.6k (then it all went a bit wrong!). I always aim to make good progress between about gwk5 up to Xmas as the way the season is unfolding has become reasonably clear.

      Salah Mikhi Willian Mahrez
      Murray Vardy Auba

      Subs: Ryan, Gudm, Morgan, Tark

To people who will bring in Kane once he's fit - what's your Kane plan?

I'm probably going to upgrade Auba to Kane and downgrade Son to Gross or Alonso to Christensen (I really don't want do to this)

Thinking of including DSilva in my wildcard, but do you really think he'll play (full match or even part of it) at Everton, when 4 days later he plays at Liverpool, 3 days after that vs ManUtd, 3 days after that vs Liverpool, 4 days after that at Tottenham??

a bigger problem for him and the whole first team though is , if they win the League against Utd then i'd expect Pep to start giving some squad players and kids a run out for the rest of the season , and with Silvas family issues he'll probably be the first to get time off

Willian is in virtually every WC team on here, including my own at the moment. But is he really worth it? Has Conte indicated that he is going to be a regular starter now? With his past appearance record, surely there is a risk that even with the extra games, he will end up playing the same or less than other players with similar or better points-per-game records?

And isn't he especially risky if you want a full squad of DGW players for BB?
