Antonio Valencia has sustained a hamstring injury and could now face up to four weeks on the sidelines, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The news has filtered through from Ferguson’s post-match press conference, following tonight’s 2-0 win at Ajax in the Europa League and has now been confirmed by United’s official site. Valencia came off the bench to play a major part in his side’s second goal, sustaining the injury in the process. He was immediately replaced on 86 minutes.

While the injury will come as a major blow to United, the timing does at least coincide with the return to fitness of both Ashley Young and Nani. Young started tonight’s tie and opened the scoring with a smart finish as United outclassed their Dutch opponents in the second period. Nani was also in Ferguson’s starting lineup.

For Fantasy managers, Valencia’s absence would pose a problem with no automatic switch available. Valencia has been in sparkling form since his return to the fold and has attracted a steady flow of investment. His Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price has risen from a low of 7.8, to 8.3, as a run of 10 assists in 11 league games led to a significant increase in ownership. Those recent investors now face losing Valencia for a spell that will see United’s fixtures improve markedly – potentially losing out on continued returns.

Owners of Wayne Rooney will also be concerned – Valencia’s supply line has been hugely profitable for United of late and Nani and Young will need to step up to fill the void. It will be interesting to see if United’s goal output suffers, once deprived of Valencia’s quality.

Those now in the market for a replacement will likely prefer to look to Nani rather than Young – his price has fallen to 9.9 following injury but that’s still a significant jump from Valencia’s sale value. Nani may also take several matches to adjust back to the pace and we shouldn’t forget that he had scored just a single goal in seven league games prior to his recent absence.

Tom Cleverley also presents an intriguing alternative. He, too, returned to the United first XI in Holland tonight and, if he can establish a starting role in midfield, offers a cheap route to United’s attacking potential at just 5.1 in the FPL.

Cleverley was replaced on 61 minutes by Paul Scholes in this evening’s game and, like Nani, will likely need time to adjust back to the pace of matters. Should he show signs of form and regular starts, however, Cleverley could see increased investment as a result of Valencia’s spell on the sidelines.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

He'll be a factor but will likely work in rotation with Park, Nani and Young. I'm not sure that this injury will increase Gigg's likelihood of starts and with four in the last seven league games, I'm not sure he offers the security required to take up a United slot in our squads - even with his price tag.

Is Cleverly that different from Carrick as an FPL prospect? Sure he's cheap but I get the sense he might be coverage for the sake of it.

Carrick is a slightly better bet than Cleverley though - 2 goals, 2 assists, more nailed on. More expensive though.

No it is set up by ElNinoRules, Parmtree and Udit. You pick a team(doesn't make a difference who you are) and then you play the people in a two legged head to head. Then 8 from the CL one join and its a knockout head to head from there which will end in GW38.

I do not own Tony V (sold him last week for Siggy, who I may now keep) Silva to Yaya looks tempting. I will sell Gerbil for either Yak or Welbeck now though I think and use the money saved to double up on either United or Pool defence.

He also got the assist for City's 1st goal - Pass from just outside City's penalty area !!

What do you guys think about Cleverley and Scholes. Both sharing game time making it difficult to invest in either?

very true, and neither offers great returns IMO, unless you can afford Nani or Young, avoid United mid and get Welbeck or double on defence (or just stick with Evans or Rooney)

Yeah Evans & Rooney are the sensible signings. Still not convinced with Young's form and whether he can stop picking up niggly injuries. I like Welbeck but Hernandez is looking lethal just now and they will be sharing match time also. Nani would be in my team if he was cheaper but even at £9.9m he is way overpriced.

I seem to be the only person championing Cleverley (which may be a damn good indicator!) but Scholes will take a back seat if TC stays fit, imho.

Cleverley is quality. Just back though so maybe a bit early to get him in. Might be a good gamble and is dirt cheap.

I'm surprised to be writing this, but I thought Lescott had a really good game tonight, as he did at Villa. He also seems to be more nailed on than Richards - food for thought there?

Kolo back now, if Lescott starts 2nd leg, Kolo should start against Blackburn!

Agreed that he was good. Also not as reckless as his defensive compatriots who kept throwing themselves into challenges. Clichy did all right too imo.

Would still buy Kompany if I wanted a City def. Kolo Toure will be back soon.

Have to agree... Seems to have got over his early season wobbles...

Having Komps back along side also helps...

    Thoughts wanted. Current team is:

    Vorm(Ruddy)
    Kompany, Raylor, Assou-Ekotto (McAuley, Caulker)
    McClean, Sessegnon, Valencia, Bale, Silva
    Rooney, Van Persie (Graham)

I was always going to swap Rooney for Aguero for the next 2 gws, however with the injury to Valencia, should I drop him for Dempsey with Aguero being my other free or keep Valencia and go Aguero and Ba in with Graham and Rooney out?

Thoughts on gettin Hart in for City defensive coverage?

    No rotation
    Save points
    Not much more expensive

Valencia's injury means that I can get Ba for Fletcher as I have 2 freebies.

Who do you think is the best cheap midfield option to get in for Valencia? (already have Moses)

    A. McClean
    B. Sigurdson
    C. Pilkington
    D. Anyone else under 5.8

£1 on Southend, Barca, Lyon, Milan, United & City for £21. Better than a slap in the face.
