The Pre-Match Preamble - Gameweek 38 Opinion

I’ve been shocked by the impact of the last few Gameweeks.

This period of the season, notable for the Double Gameweeks and blanks, has always troubled me. While I acknowledge that they bring the Fantasy Football season and communities to life, I’m also wary of the advantage that they present to myself and other managers who study and plan around them.

When the Triple Captain and Bench Boost chips were added to our armoury, those concerns were magnified further. Now it appears that the Free Hit has sharpened those weapons.

Quite frankly, I don’t feel that I deserve to be ranked just outside the top five thousand managers. It feels far too kind.

I set myself high standards and this season has felt like a disappointment. Memorable Gameweeks have been rare and, in the main, it feels like I’ve been treading water.

Looking back, while I avoided the pitfalls of #Kaneixt and benefited from that rather cruel twist, the Spurs striker has still done for me.

My unshakable faith in Kane’s ability to explode points and outscore Salah as a captain – particularly over a run of three double-digit scores for the Egyptian from Gameweek 26 – should have inflicted irreparable damage.

I felt it had. It seemed that a rank of around 30k was now the only realistic target, with any hope of edging into the top 10k abandoned.

But I’d played down how this period of the season can transform matters.

Three of my top four weekly scores have this season have arrived in the last four Gameweeks. The Double Gameweeks, blanks and chips have changed everything.

I’ll take some credit; there were some decent transfers and my solid preparation for Gameweek 31, allowing me to reserve the Free Hit for last weekend, was perhaps a turning point.

But may gains over these last few weeks are still surprising, with my current position feeling almost unjust as a summary of my season.

Before the chips were introduced, we would surely define a top 10k finish as an outstanding campaign. But with them, I’m wondering if we should be aiming higher.

In some of my mini-leagues, it’s a different story. Up against managers with great experience and pedigree, my rank shrinks back to mediocrity.

There are many proven FPL managers placed above me – Jay Eggersdorf, Jack Wain, Mark McGettigan (aka FPL General) – to name just three – who have, once again, experienced fantastic campaigns, pushing up into the top 1000 and beyond.

This is no accident. There is now a structure and formula used to build a strong FPL season and these guys have it cracked.

An early Wildcard and a consistent selection of the optimum captain can hopefully achieve a 10k rank by Gameweek 30. After that, the fixtures and chips can take over and help push on towards a three-digit finish.

Of course, it’s not that simple, and the achievement should still be applauded. However, I wonder if, like me, experienced FPL managers are now redefining their view of a “good” and “bad” season.

I’d be more shocked if any of that aforementioned trio of managers ever slipped to a finish outside the 100k, than if any of them won the FPL crown. Was that the case a few seasons back?

It feels like something has changed.

It seems that there is now a proven strategy for the final set of Gameweeks; it works and works well for those willing to invest time and effort.

I can’t deny that it’s been fun, but now we almost need a new ingredient to shake things up.

A Premier League winter break might do that. Early season chips would certainly change the landscape.

Something needs to disrupt the pattern of a Fantasy Premier League season before we all start getting a little too comfortable.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Do you know, when you tell us you're in the top 10,000 or top 5000, you make the rest of us feel inadequate. Does that make you feel good? (-:

Fair enough. I'm not good with the chips. I've actually climbed rankings without playing any chips the last few GWs but it took a lot of pre planning.

This article has got me thinking. Mark mentioned using the WC early. Obviously it pends very much on your own squad, injuries and bans etc, but generally speaking - when do you think is the optimum time to use the first and second WC's?

I tend to WC early but that's more due to my lack of patience and willingness to get on certain price rises but I don't know if it makes much difference to me in the grand scheme of my season. Interested to hear your views. Do you use yours quickly or have you had some success using them in a particular month?

      Generally use it around GW4-GW6.

2nd WC is usually with any apparent fixture swing or around first of the two DGWs in the latter half of season.

      I WCed GW14 this season.
GW12 last season. And it's been my 2 best ever seasons.
Going early is good for TV but it is also admitting defeat somewhat that your original squad selection was poor when all it may need is some patience and a couple of 4 point hit mini WCs.

Mark, Another stimulus, which gets over differential time zones, would be to allow tactical changes during game down time, after update completes on a match day. The EUFA champions league fantasy game allows it.

For me weekly stimulus is a high priority to maintain interest for the majority.

You would think that Liverpool would try to stop these team lineup leaks.
All the opposing manager has to do is check FFS on a Friday evening.
    Klopp must be going ballistic.
And some of the Liverpool fans are not happy about it, either.

      The lineup doesn't matter.

Klopp seems only capable of sending them out fast high press headless chicken mode & hope the oppo are pinned down enough in their own half so they can't walk though a never organised defence.

So playing packed at the back and long ball you have a far better chance than playing open regardless.

did a minus twenty, so starting approx at 50k instead of 32k. Stupid i know and a waste of a good rank, but i decided to have some fun, going all out attack from a bad position admittedly. My goal was around 20-50k and with my team i think that should be ok now, and far more fun to have double City attack in 37 and triple Spurs than Willian, Gross and Barnes... Alonso and Valencia the downside of course, could backfire enormously

        ha ha they won´t

worst i´ll be 20 points of where i was in the first place-)

i have nothing to really play for with 145 points lead so i decided between having fun at the expense of maybe loosing a 20k position. I went for the exciting one which also could go well, that´s the thought or actually the brainless behind it-)

Sell if it enables you to get/upgrade other players enough to outscore him by the hits it takes plus the points he scores in 37. Need to consider a hit more to get him back in 38 if at all you will want to get him back.

The game has got boring because of DGWs IMO. All the build up to two GWs at the end of the season.

Split them into Single GWs - guarantee you'll liven it up and make it tougher to get a good rank.

Well, that is part of it. Might as well put out an article that fuels discussion.

I don't think it's controversial. I think the chips have raised the bar and expectations now. They have for me and I think more and more managers.

We're in danger of taking it for granted that, come GW34-38, we will rise up the ranks. After a while, that's not going to be as exciting as it sounds. Just think we need a shake up.

The DGW's are exciting imo. The chips have been frustrating though. I got 75 out of Aguero last season, but it does have a bit of 'cheating' about it.

We got lucky Mark, 34 and 35 were very close to fails. For example if Lacazette didn’t score the very late two goals and Lukaku didn’t come off the bench to score, etc, we would be talking about a very different situation. I hugely disagree that saving the chips till the end “guarantees” a rank boost, it worked out this way for some but could still go wrong.

I love this time of year, when patience throughout the season is finally rewarded. For many, the last few weeks have been a respite from a long and frustrating season. And now you want to take that away from them.

Sorry, but I think you've misjudged the mood here. As I said earlier, not everyone has the luxury of being Fulltime on FPL and maybe your own position has made you lose touch slightly with the regular FPL player who has to sort their team on a Friday night. Dunno.

Don't get me wrong. I love it too. We've said so on the ScoutCast.

But I'm just a bit shocked at how well the DGW/Chip combo has worked and think there's a danger that we're get settled into that and suddenly this period of the season won't be exciting, it will become routine. We're not there yet, but another season and I think we're going to look for a twist.

Maybe working on FPL constantly has changed my view a bit. However, I don't think I've been much less involved with my FPL team in previous seasons tbh. Thinking/writing like someone who doesn't look at their team till Friday night has always been a struggle!.

Happens to us all, but I reckon the chips have made it less likely. Bad seasons can be made more respectable I reckon. Good luck for GW37.

                  Cheers..

I do agree that the chips have helped it is easier to make an atrocious season a little better..

My target remains top 10K though each season as there are more players, more sharks with more than one team and more Egyptians playing that just captain Salah 🙂
