End of Season Awards – Midfielders

We follow up our Polls on this season’s top Fantasy Football goalkeepers and defenders by looking at the candidates for the best midfielders.

The poll is on the right of the page, with each player analysed in detail.

Before we dig into this year’s options, let’s look at the four midfielders chosen as last season’s top performers.

Last season’s team:
Goalkeeper – Tom Heaton
Defenders – Marcos Alonso, Gareth McAuley, Seamus Coleman
Midfielders – Dele Alli, Alexis Sanchez, Christian Eriksen, Joshua King
Forwards – Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Romelu Lukaku, Harry Kane

Christian Eriksen was the only midfielder from last term to claim a place on this year’s shortlist, although his Spurs team-mate Dele Alli hardly had a poor campaign, despite falling 50 points short of matching his previous tally of 225.

The 2017/18 campaign was another unsettled one for Alexis Sanchez, who spent the first half of it in and out of the Arsenal team. Doubts over his future and fitness continued to affect manager Arsene Wenger’s team selection and despite a winter move to Man United, the Chilean managed just 152 points, over 100 below his table-topping score of 2016/17.

When it was confirmed that Josh King would be re-classified as a striker and receive a price hike to £7.5m, it already seemed as if his days as a Fantasy asset were well and truly over. However, the main reason his popularity plummeted was more down his performances than tweaks in FPL. The Norwegian forward followed up last year’s total of 16 goals and three assists with just eight and four respectively in 2017/18.

Mohamed Salah

Could we start the shortlist anywhere else other than the all-time top-scoring player in FPL? It was a record-breaking 303 points for Salah as he finished 2017/18 as the Golden Boot winner with 32 goals.

Starting the season at £9.0m, Salah was a fixture-proof bargain buy, considering his incredible reliability for points returns. The Egyptian delivered attacking returns in a staggering 80.56% of his 36 fixtures, only failing to get attacking returns on nine occasions.

Number one player for double-figure hauls (15), with his most eye-catching haul of 29 points earned for four goals and an assist in a 5-0 thrashing of Watford in Gameweek 31.

Come the end of the season, Salah was the most owned player in FPL, sitting in 56.7% of squads. Transferred in 4,223,518 times across the season, only Harry Kane earned more buyers (5,323,924) over the 38 Gameweeks.

A substantial price rise is expected next term, which could see Salah valued anywhere between £12.0m and £14.0m.

Raheem Sterling

It has been a break-out season for Raheem Sterling in 2017/18 as he set a new personal best FPL score of 229 points, which is 71 better than the 158 recorded in 2014/15.

With 18 goals and 17 assists, the winger took part in 35 of City’s 106 strikes. Salah was the only player involved in more of their side’s goals in 2017/18.

What made Sterling so successful as a Fantasy asset at the start of the season was a cut-price value of just £8.0m.

Despite registering 50 points across the first eight Gameweeks, he was only in 7% of squads at that time. A goal and two assists in a 7-2 thrashing of Stoke City finally put Sterling on the wider FPL radar for the first time and soon his ownership swelled. By this point it had become clear that the winger had managed to gain Guardiola’s favour for league matches and he was rotated just five times in the whole of 2017/18.

We’ve said this many times before but, were it not for the exceptional performances of Salah, Sterling would have probably been the FPL player of the season. A hike in value is also expected, to around the £10-11m mark

Kevin De Bruyne

Kevin De Bruyne taught many FPL managers a lesson in patience at the start of 2017/18. After occupying a deeper role in the first three matches, blanking in all of them, the Belgian went on a fantastic run of points-scoring form from Gameweek 4 and 18. Six goals, four of which came from outside the box, and eight assists saw him register an impressive seven points per match.
While some had snubbed him due to a starting price of £10.0m, that streak of consistent returns justified it easily, and by Gameweek 19 he had risen to £10.3m.

Most importantly, De Bruyne proved a stable route into the City attack which saw plenty of rotation. With both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus alternating starts, it made sense to cover the eventual champions in midfield with many Fantasy managers opting for De Bruyne and Sterling. Guardiola built his title-winning side around the Belgian, enabling Fantasy managers to do the same. None of De Bruyne’s colleagues made more appearances in the league (37), with only Ederson (36) running him close.

In the end, the City man had the third best total score among midfielders (209) and looks likely to remain one of the premium assets in that position next season.

Leroy Sane

De Bruyne took a lot of the credit for Man City waltzing to their third Premier League title this season, but Leroy Sane’s contribution to the team’s goal tally was very similar.

Playing five games fewer than the Belgian, Sane’s 10 goals and 15 assists brought him to 25 involvements, just one less than De Bruyne’s 26. The fact that he began the campaign priced £1.5m cheaper than the Belgian made him very popular once his place in the side was assured.

Just one start in the opening five Gameweeks put most Fantasy managers off initially, even if he did score a brace in just 33 minutes as a substitute against Liverpool in Gameweek 4.

Gameweek 6 was when Sane came into his own as an FPL asset. Between then and Gameweek 13 he started every match and averaged 7.88 points from four goals and six assists. After that run both output and starts dipped off, but he returned to the FPL spotlight from Gameweek 28 onwards when he was rotated just once, recording a further three goals and five assists.

Those two very strong purple patches meant that only Salah and Sterling earned more transfers in than Sane among midfielders this season (2.8 million).

David Silva

David Silva rounds off our Man City contingent in a season that proved very challenging for him personally. The Spaniard missed several matches in order to spend time with his son Mateo, who was born prematurely and required a five-month stay in hospital.

Despite those difficult circumstances, Silva still managed to involve himself in 20 of City’s goals and amassed an FPL score of 169. In fact, he actually boasted the second-best points per match score among City midfielders (5.82), behind only Sterling (6.94).

Before his family-related absences, Silva was a consistent figure in the City side starting 16 of the first 17 matches. In those fixtures he was involved in 13 goals (five his own, eight assists). His propensity to pick up bonus points for completed passes (he ranked second only to De Bruyne during this period), combined with his price, only further added to his appeal. Had he been able to see the season out, he would have outscored Sane in FPL and given De Bruyne a good run for his money.

Christian Eriksen

The only member of last year’s selection to make this shortlist, Eriksen at the very least won the three-way battle for FPL dominance in the Tottenham midfield this time around. He out-scored both Son Heung-min and Dele Alli with a final total of 199 points, having played more minutes than his team-mates.

Eriksen’s creativity took a turn for the worse last year, with his assists dropping from 20 to 10 in 2017/18. However, the Dane improved his goal threat and accuracy in particular. A total of 97 shots (second only to Salah’s 144 among midfielders) is significantly fewer than Eriksen’s 2016/17 tally of 133, but this time around he was firing them off with 59% accuracy compared to 33% recorded last term.

That meant Eriksen scored 10 goals – his joint-best tally in the Premier League, contributing to his second-best ever FPL total score. Considering the 218 points he pulled in back in 2016/17, owners will have wanted a little more return on their investment following a price hike to £9.5m, but Eriksen still had 19.4% ownership at season’s end, the fourth-best among midfielders.

Son Heung-min

Eriksen may have beaten Son’s season total of 175 FPL points but the South Korean’s much lower price and consistency when playing at home still afforded him huge appeal. With the exception of Harry Kane, nobody was involved in more league goals at Wembley Stadium for Spurs this year than Son (15), combining nine of his own with six assists.

Coming in at a whole £1.0m cheaper than Eriksen and Alli, Son was an excellent way to invest in Spurs’ attack, particularly between Gameweek 15 and 23, where he averaged 8.33 points per match. That run included two fixtures with a goal and two assists, a 5-1 thrashing of Stoke in Gameweek 16 and the Boxing Day 5-2 win over Southampton.

Later in the campaign, he filled in up front for an injured Kane and netted consecutive braces in Gameweek 29 and 30, against Huddersfield and Bournemouth respectively. That saw him become a leading signing for Wildcard squads in Gameweek 32.

Unfortunately for the 222,107 Fantasy managers who brought him in ahead of the double Gameweeks, he only made four starts in the remaining eight matches.

Riyad Mahrez

Despite another season of uncertainty over his future, Riyad Mahrez recorded his best FPL total since piling up 240 points in the famous 2015/16 campaign. Sane, Son, Alli, Hazard, Sanchez are just a few of the big names who finished below Mahrez in the 2017/18 standings, while only Salah, Sterling, De Bruyne, and Eriksen scored more points than him among midfielders in 2017/18.

Crucially, doubts over the Algerian’s commitment to the club and, later on, his level of consistency, made sure his ownership spent most of the campaign underneath 10%.

The season started very well for Mahrez as he provided three assists in the opening two matches but it was not until Gameweek 8 when he hit real form. Between then and Gameweek 22 he was involved in 14 goals in 15 matches, averaging 6.73 points over that extended period.

Few of Mahrez’s owners at the time will forgive him for handing in a transfer request just hours before the midweek Gameweek 25 deadline. After a deal with Manchester City fell through he ended up skipping training and missed two matches. He was soon back on the pitch, though, and put himself on the Wildcard radar after two goals and an assist across Gameweeks 29 and 30.

After disappointing between Gameweeks 32 and 35, Mahrez ruthlessly trolled the FPL community by putting up 25 points in the final four matches, after suffering from 144,608 sales.

Sadio Mane

Sadio Mane may not have matched his total score from the previous two campaigns but did remarkably well considering he played fewer minutes than usual. Suspension the winger out of Gameweeks 4 -6 before a hamstring problem kept him out from Gameweek 8 to 10.

However, when the Senegalese international was fit and firing, he was an excellent way of covering Liverpool’s attack outside of the incredible Salah. Involved in 18 goals over 28 starts, made him an important player to own when the Reds were finding the net regularly.

Mane scored in each of the first three matches of the season before being sent off for a foul on Ederson against Man City. His best run was between Gameweek 21 and 34 when he averaged 5.92 points per match from six goals and five assists.

Wilfried Zaha

Crystal Palace’s talisman proved an efficient mid-range midfielder to own for the end of season run-in. In the last nine Gameweeks, priced at £6.9m, only Salah (eight) scored more goals in this classification than Zaha (five). He backed that up with three assists, averaging 7.11 points per match and earning three price rises in that time, too.

Deployed as a striker by Roy Hodgson, Zaha ranked joint-second for big chances with Sterling (eight) between his injury comeback appearance in Gameweek 30 and the end of the campaign.

It remains to be seen whether he can retain that role up front for the Eagles or, indeed, whether they can hold onto their prize asset amid reports of interest from the likes of champions Man City.

Marko Arnautovic

After an indifferent start to life at West Ham, midfielder Marko Arnautovic had two impressive spells as an effective differential from a Fantasy perspective. After David Moyes took over from Slaven Bilic, the Austrian was deployed as a striker, making his price of £6.9m a bargain.

Arnautovic’s first run of success was between Gameweek 16 to Gameweek 24 when he registered six goals and four assists, averaging 7.75 points per match. During that run, his ownership never eclipsed 12%, and it was under 10% for most of it.

After a few weeks out with a hamstring injury, Arnautovic was back, involved in seven goals in his final eight matches of the season. Between Gameweek 32 and 38 he has as many shots on goal as Salah (26) and proving more accurate than any other FPL midfielder (11 on target) over that time too.

Pascal Gross

Brighton’s summer signing offered incredible value this season (27.8), with only Salah bettering it among midfielders. A total of 164 points from a starting price of £5.5m was hugely satisfying for those who owned the Brighton man in 2017/18.

After a quiet few opening weeks, Gross exploded onto the scene with an 18-point haul in Gameweek 4, registering two goals and an assist in a 3-1 win over West Brom. While some thought he was just a flash in the pan, 188,139 Fantasy managers made the smart decision to sign him for Gameweek 5. He rewarded them immediately with an assist and a bonus point in the 2-1 away defeat to Bournemouth and remained a shrewd investment for some time.

Between Gameweek 4 and 12 Gross scored or assisted in six matches from a possible nine, rising in price to £5.9m. A particularly memorable moment was picking up maximum bonus points despite not being involved in a goal during a 1-0 defeat to Man United at Old Trafford.

The German experienced something of a hiatus from the FPL spotlight between Gameweek 14 to 25, where he provided just one attacking return. But a goal and an assist in the 3-1 win over West Ham in Gameweek 26 triggered a rush to buy him back. Over 1,000,000 FPL managers owned Gross between then and season’s end and were rewarded with an average of 4.38 points per match.

Jesse Lingard

It was a break-out season for Jesse Lingard in 2017/18 recording a personal best FPL score of 128 points, which is 52 better than his previous top total. Starting the campaign priced at £6.0m, and looking likely to be an impact sub at Man United, he was far away from anyone’s Fantasy plans.

In Gameweek 14 Lingard turned our heads by scoring 12 points from a goal, assist and two bonus in a 4-2 win at Watford. It was just his second start of the season, making him a risky option still. A place in the team not yet guaranteed, his ownership remained in the region of 14,000 Fantasy managers until he started again the following week and scored twice against Arsenal to bring in 15 points.

Between Gameweek 14 and 22 he featured from the beginning in all but one of the nine matches, scoring or assisting in six of them for an average of 7.78 points. That boosted Lingard’s price from £5.8m to £6.1m and encouraged an increase in ownership by 577,079. It was perfect timing from a Fantasy perspective as this run came soon after fellow budget midfielder Gross, similarly priced, dropped off in terms of output.

Luka Milivojevic

In a season where very few bargain-bin strikers warranted a place in our squads, Luka Milivojevic became the budget enabler we all sorely needed. It is very rare that a midfielder who began the campaign at £5.0m ends the season involved in 12 goals for his team, his set-piece responsibilities at Crystal Palace paving the way for 144 FPL points.

Only Gross and Salah offered better value than the Serbian international across the season, excelling particularly after Gameweek 22. Between then and the end of the season, only Liverpool’s Golden Boot winner (15) scored more goals than Milivojevic (seven) among midfielders. He was helped by the exploits of Zaha who won 33 fouls during the Palace captain’s purple patch, third only to Hazard and Alli.

That run of form saw Milivojevic’s price rise to £5.2m, with an ownership of 13.5%, suggesting he could be valued around the £6.0m mark next season.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Career Hall of Fame Top Ten Successes and Failures

I’ve just been sifting through the new top ten in our Career Hall of Fame.

    https://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/hall-of-fame/live/

Watch out for an article in the next few days looking in detail at their strategies and season highs and lows.

In the mean time I thought I’d share some common themes to emerge among this group – which may well chime with your own experiences.

Given the average 2017/18 rank of this group is 4,231 and includes runner up Paul Gee they offer a good indication of success over the campaign.

Focus on Man city players early on

Focusing on Manchester City assets after a few Gameweeks reaped considerable rewards. Those that did from around Gameweek 5 prospered, those that waited to bring them in slipped. Many of those with the best ranks among this group used their wildcard to ensure they tapped into Pep’s troops.

    3-5-2 trumps 3-4-3

All but one of this group used 3-4-3 the most frequently. But for all nine of those that did 3-5-2 was far more effective.

A key reason many didn’t use 3-5-2 more frequently was the absence of a strong 4.5 benchable striker. But if they had used this formation and perhaps benched a non playing third striker, or invested more in that bench spot, then they may have done even better.

Interestingly the only manager to use 3-5-2 frequently had the lowest overall finish this season among this top ten. For this manager 4-4-2 was the more lucrative option. This indicates for the most part the top ten were excellent at selecting a strong midfield, except for one who was far better at selecting a strong defence.

Backing Salah with the captaincy not Kane

Many of this elite group would have got far higher returns if they had backed Salah with the armband rather than Kane. All backed the Spurs man more often, all scored more when they backed the Liverpool star.

    Keep hits to a minimum

This was not a good season to take lots of hits. The highest among this group was 16 hits, the lowest five. The average 9.9.

    First wildcard timing was irrelevant

When this was used didn’t matter – whether their wildcards (if used very early on in particular) - or their teams had strong Manchester City coverage was the key factor in first half of the season success.

Use chips around doubles and blanks

Most savvy managers do this. All of this group did too. When they Bench Boosted, Free hitted or Triple Captained offered marginal benefits – the key was to deploy them around blanks and doubles.

That’s a far bigger task - would be good to see that though.

This is purely about this season’s top managers among the HoF though and why they all did well to varying degrees - and what they could have done differentially to have done even better.

Sort of a season retrospective snapshot focusing on the decisions of 10 very good managers.

Some class midfielders this season are going to get a big price hike.

Going to be even harder to get the 7 Million or under bargains.

Anyone spring to mind that could fit into that bracket?

Does look a like a dearth of options at that price point...
Gudmundsson could be a good option for no more than 6M.
And maybe Martial could drop almost as low as 7M and get a chance at a new club?

Izquierdo. Gross probably not over 7. JWP/Redmond perhaps if nailed. Townsend always has potential. Shelvey/Ritchie for Newcastle.

Likely to be a gem or two in the promoted teams but I don't follow the championship teams.

Who's getting a price hike? Not Zaha or Arnautovic. Their outputs have been the same as previous seasons, not an improvement. And their prices never rose to 7.5 this season.

Don't think anyone under 7m is going to get a price hike.

I think Zaha and Arnautovic will both be over 7 Million if they stay as midfielders.

Outputs may have been similar but both played less due to injuries pushing up the PPG.

        Zaha
        16/17: 149 points in 3019 minutes
        17/18: 136 points in 2549 minutes

        Arnautovic
        16/17: 117 points in 2713 minutes
        17/18: 144 points in 2309 minutes

They both improved their output. Arnie's went up significantly. Price rises for both surely.

Zaha improved from 4.44 pts per 90 minutes to 4.80 points per 90 minutes. Doubt it's big enough to warrant a price rise.

Arnie was not made 7m because of 16/17. He was poor value in 16/17. His price increased to 7m after his good output in the 15/16 season but he did not deliver value for that price in 16/17. But they decided to not change his price and give him another chance this season, where he came back to his old output. So all he's done is justify keeping him at 7m.

Could be some value in Everton's team once they are allowed to play football. Sight, Bolasie, Theo all might drop in price.

Hopefully we'll all be able to pick Sessegnon and Tim Cairney.

As far as I can see, apart from GKs, only Zanka, Cork, Dunk, Maguire and Mawson played every minute of the season. Cork the only midfielder.

'Managers will happily pay £14m for Salah' - FPL veteran

Mark Sutherns suggests building your 2018/19 team around Liverpool star whatever his position and price

Fantasy Premier League managers will pay whatever it takes to get Mohamed Salah into their squads next season, according to Mark Sutherns.

In the last FPL Show Mark explains that after Salah's record-breaking FPL return of 303 points, managers will be clamouring to get the Liverpool star into their sides in 2018/19, even if he may no longer be classed as a midfielder.

"I have never seen a Fantasy asset like it," Mark says of the Premier League Golden Boot winner. "Can he do it again? I think he can.

"The question is, is he going to be a forward or a midfielder? What price is he going to be? We'll pay £14.0m probably to get him in our teams.

"It’s going to be an interesting summer when the prices come out and we start building teams with Salah in them."

I like the way Mark just presumes to speak for what is now around 5 million people who play the game. He really should phrase things “in my opinion” or “I would” more than “we”.

Ronaldo was 14.0m I think & I was happy enough to pay that for him, so would have no real issues with Salah as long as he’s a midfielder.

14.0m for a striker is too much though.

    9. MTPockets
        5 years, 10 months ago

14m is just stupid after one season. The game's already too skewed towards too few picks via categorisation/formation/bonus system.

        1. MTPockets
            5 years, 10 months ago

            Context:

            Henry was 14m in 06/07 after 24, 24, 30, 25, 27 PL goals
            RVP 14m in 13/14 after 18, 30, 26
            Ronaldo 14m in 08/09 after 17, 31
            Aguero 13m in 16/17 after 23, 12, 17, 26, 24

Salah's had one season of 32. Ok classified as mid, but shouldn't be, and can't find more detailed stats like historical fpl assists.

It seems to that some managers are a bit deluded about what Salah's classification should be for next season.

I think most will agree with me that Liverpool's go to formation is 4-3-3.
That is 4 defenders 3 midfielders and 3 forwards the adjective we are looking for here gentlemen is FOWARDS.

Mane also needs to be re classed as a forward because he is playing in this system.

Firimino is classed as a forward (rightly so) and plays deeper on average than Salah which says it all really.

As for his price,he is the highest scoring fpl player in a single season of all time so he should be priced accordingly i would suggest at least £13.5m forward.

I will leave heat maps for the Liverpool forwards for us members just to drive home the point.

        Salah- https://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/player-profiles/mohamed-salah/
        Firmino- https://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/player-profiles/roberto-firmino-barbosa-de-oliveira/

By your logic, Sterling, Sane, Bilva, Hazard, Sanchez, Martial, etc. should all be made forwards.

The only mids we'll have left then will be central mids.

Of course Sterling and Sane should be classed as forwards that is where they play after all.

The rest are borderline without looking at his average position i think Bilva should be left as a mid there is a good case for Hazard to be re classed because he did start a good few games up top but we all know he is a mid really.

If Sanchez stayed at Arsenal than maybe he should have been re classed but at United it is fair to say he plays deeper so he is ok.

As for Martail i think he was classed as a forward when he first came to the league and maybe he should go back to that classification.

Sane is the definition of a pure winger. I don't care what his heat map shows, obviously he's going to be high up the pitch with the way City dominate possession and games. Are you going to tell me that Ryan Giggs should've been a forward in FPL because they're both left wingers.

But United mainly played a 4-4-2 with Giggs on the wing if they had him as a wing forward in the 4-3-3 system than of course he should have been re classed.

I actually think Sterling Sanchez & Martial should be reclassified, they are just not midfielders, they are much closer to forwards.

Sané is a midfielder, he has often played left WB for Man City, Silva same as he plays a bit deeper than a forward.

            Hazard is interesting.

I wonder do they actually need a fourth position for a forward as opposed to a striker. Maybe a forward gets 5 points for a goal, but no CS point etc.

So you could have 3 of a mixture of forwards/strikers.

This. Think a lot of people are under the delusion that forwards are only central strikers.

They are technically forwards in real life, yes. But in FPL, wingers are classified as midfielders. They have been for years, so why change it now?

I think FPL should rename that category from 'Forwards' to 'Strikers' to avoid confusion.

Exactly. Wingers have always been midfielders in FPL, forwards are generally central strikers. It's always been like this, not sure why people want to confuse matters.

So Tieary Henry was wrongly classed as a forward and Aubameyang who it is fair to say cuts in from the wing a lot should be re classed as a mid?

What about Firmino who plays deeper than Salah should he be re classed? which would mean in twisted logic that Liverpool's first choice team would have no forwards in terms of fpl which is absurd.

Henry started out as a winger but was converted to a striker. Auba's position is well known to be a striker at every other club. At Arsenal, he has played as both in a short period of time. On the left when Lacazette played, and centrally when he didn't. There's nothing to suggest that he'll mostly be played on the left next season, they won't even have the same manager.

Firmino plays deeper than Salah yes, but that's not how classification has worked in FPL all these years. He starts as a false 9 and Salah starts as a winger on the right. Even if he gets forward more often than Firmino, he drifts in from the right, not centrally. He even called himself a winger in an interview.

You are seriously deluded if you think a player that plays an average as the most forward player at a club should not be classed as such.

Anyway i trust FPL to make the right call on this obvious misclassification for the coming season.

I think ‘forwards’ in FPL should be renamed ‘strikers’, i.e. a typical Centre Forward or No. 10, as that is the type of player they have classified as a forward.

The long list of wingers are forwards in football terms, but probably ‘on the cusp’ when it comes to FPL.

The Liverpool trio are straight banged on forwards though in a front 3 🙂

I'd be perfectly happy for Salah and Firmino to swap positional roles.

Firmino plays False9, which is certainly open to interpretation, but I have no ideological issue with it being classed as a midfield position. Salah plays Inside Forward. He is a Forward.

I have no idea what they will do with Salah, but I'm I will own him regardless of cost if he is a Mid. £13.5 fwd would be extreme, I suspect many would not be comfortable with that.

It's funny that so many managers get sacked and these people are signed by other teams and almost all of them get sacked again. Why don't clubs look out for new faces instead of the old ones like David Moyes etc

Even if they sign these previous faces, more time should be given to them to establish some stability to the club, don't you think?

Not sure if it'll be much use to anyone put if you want to see the top 50 players in a league in a chart from gw1 to gw38 and then a table showing the league table in that specific gameweek you can view it here -

        https://www.anewpla.net/fpl/league/overview.php?id=142235

(replace the number at the end with the league ID)

Basically was using it to determine who were the top 3 players at Christmas and other little mini-league prizes

I agree. But FPL may not agree, they may just see top league goal scorer & a very attacking player & put 2 & 2 together to get 5. We are totally at their mercy with these things.

See Ashley Young as a midfielder for example, They do get it wrong sometimes.

How is that semantics? It's a big issue for the game that teams are playing with 3 attackers and only 1 of them is considered a forward. We have virtually no options up front, and midfield is too much about finding value over the highest point scorers.

It's semantics because FPL have always classed wingers or wide forwards as midfielders and central strikers as forwards. We know this so what is the point in saying FPL use the term forwards rather than strikers? Semantics.

Kane, Aguero, Aubameyang, Lukaku, Jesus, Firmino, Vardy, Lacazette, Morata/Giroud and all of the budget options. Arnie and/or Zaha could be reclassified because they played most of the season as central strikers. How is that virtually no options?

Make Salah, Sterling, Sanchez, Hazard, Mane, etc. forwards and then we have virtually no options in midfield.

Just because FPL has always done it, doesn't make it right necessarily. Football has evolved, so maybe FPL should too? If we were picking actual football teams we would never pick a team of 3-4-3 with 4 x wide forwards as the 4 midfielders, so there's a question why we should we be able to do this for our FPL teams.

Play Football Manager then. FPL should be concerned with making the best fantasy football game they can. Having every wide forward as a forward isn't good for the game.

In that case, why don't we just pick squads/teams with no position restrictions at all? Cheering on 11 forwards would make the most exciting fantasy game.

Having virtually no options up top isn't good for the game.

The problem with your mentality is that you refuse to separate players from each other. You can put Salah as a forward without putting Mané as a forward. You can put Sterling as a forward without putting Sané as a forward. Mané played out wide when Liverpool played 4-2-2-2 while Salah played up top. Sané played as a wing back in City's 3-5-2 while Sterling played up top. Sterling and Salah will ocassionally play as a 9, while Mané and Sané haven't done it once this season. Put Sané and Mané as midfielders, with Salah and Sterling as forwards and you get options. You then adjust the price to their role so Sané and Mané aren't automatically more attractive as midfielders.

That's fine but a lot of the people on here have been calling for all wide forwards to be classed as forwards so that is what I was arguing against.

Why do people keep repeating this point when a quick look at the heatmaps of all the mentioned players clearly show that Salah is further forward than all of them? He's also further forward than most actual forwards.

I would agree with most of those counting as strikers with the exceptions of Mane and Sanchez (in his wide Utd role).

Salah is a striker in my opinion, he doesn't track back, and he's his teams most advanced player - higher than Firmino

He will gain some bonus points, but lose 1 point for every goal (-32 this season) and anywhere from 15-20 clean sheet points as well. On the whole, it makes him a worse prospect as he won't get 50 additional bonus points.

        3. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

Re-classification as a striker can only really bring his score down. He would lose 1 point for every goal (-32) and 1 point for every CS (-15) so -47 in total.

He might get extra baps, but surely not 47 extra.

He got 26 baps I think so let’s say he got double that due to strikers getting 6 extra BPS per goal... that would leave him overall about 20 points worse off than this year.

So around 280-ish which is still quite frankly ridiculous scoring. Anything over 250 is eye watering.

Maybe he actually would be worth 14.0 as a striker.

What's stopping anyone from calling a 4-3-3 a 4-3-2-1? Also in a 4-2-3-1 are the 3 now midfielders or forwards because the two out wide basically play the same roles as the wide players in a 4-3-3. It's not as black and white as that.

Not necessarily. I don't think it makes sense for the game to go down that route. For example, Robertson is Liverpool's left back and correctly classified as a defender but his average position is more advanced than a number of their midfielders. Should Roberton be a midfielder because of that? Of course not.

Well considering Liverpool play 4-3-3 i have no problem with Robertson's classification he is one of the 4 defenders after all and the 3 forwards should also get their proper classification.

I'm not sure really, 4-2-4 is a valid system that teams do play so maybe allow it but make the pricing more aggressive so that it's unlikely you'd have 4 premium forward options

While I agree Salah appears to play as the 'striker' for Liverpool, he won't be re-positioned in FPL imo.

This means a lot of players will need to be re-positioned too. (Zaha, Arnautovic, Son, Sane, Sterling etc.) FPL won't shift that many 'midfielders' to 'forwards' as there becomes an unbalance between the 2 positions - we'll have far less midfielders to choose from and a load of attackers we can't fit in.

Can't argue with any of that. we do need to pick 5 midfielders so it would make sense to have wingers classed as midfielders. And have more than 5 good ones to choose from. I'd go a stage further and turn the fairly-meaningless defensive mids as defenders. I would certainly consider getting the likes of Kante, Can or Dier at 6.5 million. It's all about providing alternatives.

What other players can you think of in a front 3, that isn’t the recognised striker, have been classed as forwards and not mids? Off the top of my head only Rashford springs to mind.

wrong Syd. Just needs motivation . Went missing this season due to situation at the club. No doubt in my mind he is by far the best attacking and creative mid in the pl

Same thing happened 2 seasons ago under Mourhino. If he needs motivation he is not the type of player I would want anywhere near my team.

You just can’t blaming the situation at the club as an excuse for him going missing

FPL should just rename the forwards category to strikers, that would definitely clear up a lot of talk about reclassifying wingers.

FPL should not start to reclassify wingers as forwards.
Champions League fantasy have done this and now the remaining midfield picks are just horrible.
Can select mids out of Kante, Matic etc.
Everyone needs to play with 3 worthless mids and 2x 4.5m fodder now.

Left wing striker and right wing striker does not have a nice ring to it i like the way it is now when referring to players playing in a 4-3-3 system as left wing forward and right wing forward.

Salah’s record points haul was because he was incorrectly classified as a midfielder and picked up an extra 40 odd points for clean sheets and midfielders goal points that forwards don’t receive.

He is obviously a forward (heat maps, style of play) and simply has to be classified as one next year.

Should classify him as a 15m fwd, then I can just pass.

Not based on just one season. Already wrote this above, but:

                    "Henry was 14m in 06/07 after 24, 24, 30, 25, 27 PL goals
                    RVP 14m in 13/14 after 18, 30, 26
                    Ronaldo 14m in 08/09 after 17, 31
                    Aguero 13m in 16/17 after 23, 12, 17, 26, 24

Salah's had one season of 32. Ok classified as mid, but shouldn't be. And can't find more detailed stats like historical fpl assists for comparison."

14 seasons of the best PL and FPL players and just 3 times they hit 30 goals, and Salah hits 32 goals in his first season whilst out scoring the 14 collective seasons of there top top best players ... this says he is special to me and warrants the top price tag m, otherwise it’s just a farce 🙂

I have said he is the highest FPL scorer and scored more goals in a single season than the 14 seasons of the best of the best that you quote 🙂

It's hard to say what he will be since we have never had anything like this, that last time players did this well in their debut seasons were Sanchez and Aguero, but even then they scored far less. Ronaldo was £14.0m after a 31 goal season as a mid but 17 goals before that, Salah doesn't have that previous season so I think he'll be a bit less at £13.0 or £13.5. Don't think he will be a fwd because having two potentially £13.0m fwd's would ruin the balance of the game

He has scored 15 and 14 league goals in the previous seasons. He's hardly coming from nowhere.

If he's still a mid then it's harder to argue against the top-end valuation. But 14m+ as a fwd as he should be is too much, despite the 15/14.

sometimes it's so much nicer having the option removed so we don't have the brain agony of deliberating, or later taking hits to swap team around, i'd really like to have more fire and forget options this season

even at 13/14m i'd want to see early season results if he was reclassified as a forward, a 9m mane/sane midfield option would look much more tempting with that price difference

If he has been classified as a forward he would have got more points

You get 24 Bps for every goal as a forward meaning he would have cleaned up on the Baps

He was so far off the bps scores at times that the extra 6 points for a goal would not have helped 🙂

That said, only 3 players earned more bonus points than Salah, so he was hardly hard done by the system !

we all have different views on whether certain players should be forward or mids, at the end of the day the FPL gods will decide and we'll just have to accept it - fwiw i reckon they'll probably put Salah as a forward, based on his goal output mainly aswell as his role/position in the team - although funnily i don't think they'll do this with other players such as zaha/arnie/sterling etc, at least not all of them

I think the thing is that for the purposes of the game FPL towers have to pick a category for each player, and they probably won't apply a standard ruling, more subjective selection of certain players such as Salah, rather than have a whole flood of attacking winger types all reclassified as forwards, we'll see....
