While Saturday’s FA Cup final offered little as a spectacle, the Fantasy Premier League’s own cup showpiece was the most dramatic in its history.

Nick Smith triumphed in the most unlikely fashion as he and his opponent were only separated by goals scored.

Tied with Serbian manager Djole Isailovic on 78 points, Smith won the title in the end because his side included six goals, while Djole – who ended ranked 510 in the world – had just five.

Nick’s achievement was made all the more impressive by the fact that he snubbed Mohamed Salah, while Djole did have the Egyptian and used his Triple Captain chip on Harry Kane for the final match.

We caught up with Nick to look back on his season and, in particular, the emotion of his FPL Cup final experience.

How did you follow the games on the final day? Were you constantly refreshing Djole’s team to see how he was getting on? I imagine Salah getting an early goal had you petrified…

Nick: My friends and I were away for the weekend and we were watching the Liverpool game, as well as receiving notifications on the other key games. Myself and Djole had more or less the same team for the final. I think it was six or seven of the same players, so it wasn’t too difficult to follow.

What was it like waiting around for confirmation of the result? I imagine it was a longer wait than you expected considering it was so close in the end. Could you quite believe that you both finished on the same points?

Nick: With Salah and Kane both doing well, I thought it was game over for me. I thought I’d lost. So I was disappointed, but happy that I’d managed to reach the final. I then received a message from a friend saying: “I think you’ve miscalculated, you may not have lost after all!”

Once the bonus points were in I realised that it had ended a tie and quickly checked the tiebreak rule. Even then, having read it, I still wasn’t sure that I’d won until I saw the tweet from Fantasy Premier League. I have to say a big thank you to Andrew Robertson. It was his goal that won it for me.

Clearly, Djole is an accomplished Fantasy Football manager, given his overall position, so I always knew it would be a tough battle and it turn out incredibly close.

How much did you celebrate after your title was confirmed?

Nick: It was a really big night. I treated myself to a nice cold glass of Ribena and was in bed by 10:30. Milner style.

2017/18 has been an interesting journey for you and you ended ranked an impressive 4058 alongside your Cup win. How much thought did you put into your Gameweek 1 side and how did you spread your budget across the positions?

Nick: I gave my team quite a lot in the days leading up to the Gameweek 1 deadline. The majority of my budget was used in the forward areas with Romelu Lukaku and Kane up front. In midfield, I started with Dele Alli, Kevin De Bruyne and Cesc Fabregas, supported by a few gambles on Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luka Milivojevic.

Did you make a good start?

Nick: Absolutely not. With Kane not scoring in August and picking Alexander-Arnold and Milivojevic before they hit form, I found myself bottom of my work league, to the great amusement of everyone involved. I have politely reminded these individuals of their comments after ending up top of that one.

What were some of your best decisions across the campaign? Were there any big hauls in particular Gameweeks that you have fond memories of?

Nick: The turning point in my season was when I lost out in ‘Pep Roulette’, having captained Sterling (who didn’t make it onto the pitch) but vice-captained Kane in Spurs’ 4-1 victory over Liverpool, netting 32 points in total.

My best decision was saving all of my chips until late in the season, including the bench boost chip in GW34, which delivered a 100+ point haul.

Did you make a conscious decision at some point in the season to shift your focus on to winning the FPL Cup? At which point did you realise you had a good chance of winning it?

Nick: The first time the FPL Cup came to my attention was when there were around 1,000 players left, but I didn’t focus on it until the last 64 or 32 really. I think I had my Wildcard and all of my chips left at this point, so thought I was in good shape to progress if luck was on my side.

What was your strategy in each round? Did you start analysing the team of your next opponent and work out how you could best out-manoeuvre them?

Nick: My strategy was simply to get as many Double Gameweek players with good fixtures and good form as possible into my team for the closing weeks of the season, hoping the cup wins would follow.

I didn’t look too in-depth at the opponents until the semi-final and final. In the semi-final I was fairly confident due to my Triple Captain chip, but knew I needed to pick some different players for the final as I was on the receiving end of that chip.

I was debating Aaron Cresswell, Patrick van Aanholt and Alexander-Arnold as my defensive options and went with the West Ham man – and missed out on Van Aaholt’s 18-point haul. Wilfried Zaha and Marko Arnautovic were the two attacking players I was considering, and I went with the latter, which was a good decision, less so with Cresswell.

I saw that you changed your team name from Bare Ham Rolls Fam to ‘FPL Cup Finalist!!’ once you had won your semi-final. I take it you were over the moon to make it to the showdown.

Nick: I was definitely excited to have reached the final and as many players in my leagues were asking me about it, I thought it would be the easiest way of letting my friends know how it was going. I also just felt proud of the accomplishment as I’ve never made it more than about four weeks deep in the cup before.

You went into the final day without Mohamed Salah in your team. What was the thinking behind that?

Nick: The decision to drop Salah in Gameweek 37 was a fairly simple one on paper, given that his replacement, Leroy Sane, had two nice fixtures, against Liverpool’s difficult away game at Chelsea. It worked out well for me with Sane’s 17 points.

Ideally I’d have brought Salah back in the final Gameweek, but unfortunately, the budget wouldn’t stretch that far. Arnautovic did the job for me in the end so luckily it wasn’t an issue.

Were you particularly worried about your opponent having the Triple Captain chip available?

Nick: I was definitely worried. I used mine in Gameweek 37 to try and assure my place in the final, but Djole showed serious ‘cojones’, to quote Troy Deeney, in saving it for the final. It was a great strategy that would have paid off nine times out of 10. Thankfully for me, it happened to be the one time out of 10 where it didn’t.

Anyone up for a little competition/ analysis

Been looking at statistco, particular the immediate returns from transfers in which can be found on the statistico stat page

48 transfers in 257 points from those transfers = 5.35 points per transfer. How do you guys compare?

This is interesting data becauuse if deciding whether to take a hit if you can be fairly confident the player you are taking out will only score a point or Two then a hit may well be worth it especially when you take into account other factors such as price rises and ongoing good fixtures.

      Total Transfers : 41
Total immediate points gained from transfers : 226

This isn't useful at all because not all transfers can be looked at in a vacuum. My transfers might still have contributed to more overall points than someone who gained 50 extra immediate points. Or maybe not.

I did mention ongoing factors, which favour more over less transfers.
If you are getting over 5 immedietly it does make hits look more attractive especially with ongoing benefits like you suggest

I think you'd need a large player pool going in and out of form to justify large numbers of hits. I think that hits are bad, on average.

      148 from 41 transfers

What should be pointed out is that the total points includes points gained when playing the free hit or wildcards but the transfer amount does not factor this in, e.g. playing the free hit fin GW35 gained me 67 points immediate points but the 41 transfers doesn't included any of the changes I made. The two wildcards actually cost me 30 immediate points so excluding both those it's 111 immediate points from 41.

Another reason it's not the most useful measure in terms of hit-taking is you might have a sub who could come in, e.g. I sold injured Zaha for Ramsey in GW2 gaining me 2 points but TCarroll on my bench could have come on had I not made any change so did I really gain 2 immediate points from making that transfer?

Statistico says I gained 252 immediate points from my 49 transfers = 5.14 points gained per transfer.

But if you include captaincy doubles and trebles but discount Wildcards and Free Hits, then I only gained 142 immediate points (2.90 points gained per transfer) before hits.

The other 110 points must have come from my Wildcards and Free Hit.

And if my 60 points in hits are deducted, then my immediate points gain after hits is only 82.

          I agree.

And if I also adjusted for the points my vice-captain would have scored if I had captained him instead of the incomer then that would reduce my immediate points gained after hits by a further 48 points to 34 points.

Just to clear up some mis information and a reminder to always do your own research, the stats are accurate and they do not double points if you captained the incoming player so if statistico says you made 260 points then it is straight up correct

I dont understand the relevance of this?

Nobody in their right mind would make a transfer for 1 week unless it was a double or blank.

A lot of the time we make transfers for players who aren't going to play that week, the numbers here might not tell the story you want them to tell.

Who is talking about One week transfers though? All the transfers I make are for the long term, and the fact they make over 5 points on average for the first week is a good sign when considering whether to take a hit for one or not.

Next season if I am 50/50 on deciding whether to hit or not I will probably do it with more confidence because

        1) The hit will almost pay off straight away (ave over 5 points)
        2) It will improve the team going forward by removing dead wood and keeping team fresh
        3) It will make money

      I'm kind of the same.

Although in this day and age of social media and BBC having short highlights of every game online, I'll still keep up with what's going on even if I don't sit and religiously watch 90 mins of every match.

TBH its no different to how I consume club football, despite having Sky Sports I actually end of watching very little LIVE football. Maybe an average of just 30 mins per week. Although for the World Cup I will make an exception!

I certainly don’t watch as much football as I use to do, would watch City if they are on but as for other games I take very little interest in them would only watch them if I was bored. Definitely think there is far too much football on TV and the majority of it is low quality.

Yes, you can make unlimited changes to your team prior to the first kickoff on Thursday, June 14. After that you'll be given 26 transfers to use throughout the group stage. If any of these transfers are unused, they will not be carried over. Unlimited changes are again allowed between the end of the group stage and the start of the knockout stage on Saturday, June 30. You’ll then have another 20 transfers to use throughout the knockout stage.

Transfers can be made at any time and will apply from the next kick-off.

So a 5-3-3 with double Sule? I like it.
Do remember that you can make in gameweek transfers though. It might be uneccesary to start with 3 big strikers, you can go with two first and then switch to two different ones later in the gw if you wish.

Also, its -1 for every goal conceded so defenders from poor teams (like Serbia) can cost you quite a few points.

11 captain blanks in my first 18 GW this season...

5 blanks from the next 20.

    Pretty much sums it up.

    2, 12, 4, -4, 4, 22, 26, 4, 10, 4, 4, 2, 16, 12, 4, 24, 4, 2,

Also used 12/16 of my FT's over the first 18 GW's transferring out injured players 🙁

Taking some notes from the 2017-18 fpl season to prepare for the next one:

GK: started it with DeGea but downgraded to Foster on wildcard to use money elsewhere.
I'll wait to see what happens with Heaton and Pope. If one of them leaves, the one staying may be a target.
Also waiting to see if Fabianski gets transferred to a PL team. Dubravka, Ryan and Lossl on watchlist too.

DEF: Azpi, Ota and Robertson seem to be worth considering for next season. VanAanholt too, possibly.
I hope Rose leaves to make Davies an actual rotation-free target. Alonso in the list too if he drops in price.
I feel like getting the cheapest useless 3rd forward, to allow having cheap but playing 4th and 5th defs.

MID: Salah probably the first name in my team next season, no matter the price.
Will see how Pep prepares the team in preseason to decide on which one between Sterling Sane Dilva Bilva.
Zaha and Arnautovic, if they stay at their teams, will be very interesting.
Players like Gross and Gudmundsson will have to be considered.

FWD: Main target is Auba. Feel like starting without Kane for a change, to avoid his usually dry August.
Not interested in Lukaku, unless ManUtd play more offensively.
Vardy or Firmino could cover the 2nd forward spot.
Perez, Wood and Barnes showed good signs too.

Any general thoughts you'd like to share?

Has to be 352 from the start this season. Last 2 seasons I've started out with 343, it hasn't worked and I've ended up going 352.

Yeah the quest for the always performing 3rd forward had been costing points hits and almost never brought points.

Any thoughts? Way too early to even be thinking about any of this.

No idea what's going to happen in regards to transfers, injuries and who might establish themselves as first team regulars.

Look at pre-season last year - some players were played religiously and in great form only to be immediately dropped to the bench for the first few GWs.

Promoted teams? Some value for money in there surely. We will all be looking for the next Gross I'm sure.

Liverpool's team could change heavily in the summer whereas City's might not, offering us more headaches about who is a certainty and who isn't.

Will Jose and Conte still be at their clubs? Will their style of play dramatically change? Will Alonso be classed as a midfielder?

The list goes on. There's so many variables at play right now it's just not even worth giving a seconds consideration to.

Ask us again in like 50/60 days and I'm sure we'll have worthwhile answers for you.

          Sure, everything can change.
I mainly try to remember the logic I followed before gw1 and compare it to the way the season unfolded.

      Telegraph game :

Hard to work out these rules. 5 points for a goal from any position. A good weighting for attacking defenders but most teams more likely to concede a goal than have a defender scoring. Are be not better off with 5 mids, likes of Sane, Mane, Tadic ( unfortunately had some great games in Ireland's qualifying group despite brutal club form) cheaper than forwards.

With 26 transfers start with first few days of first round game players and rotate in new players frequently, possibly with Scillachi-types virtual unkowns who hit freakish form.

They were brutal in qualification. Aguero won't be matchfit. Messi must knackered carrying them.

Iceland are very decent. Croatia nearly always do well at tournaments. Nigeria mightn't be great but they're hardly minnows, always have a few talented players.

Think Salah and Ronaldo will be too expensive. Ronaldo’s never scored more than 1 goal at a WC iirc, and Portugal haven’t looked too convincing despite their miraculous Euros victory.

I’m eyeing up Isco (Spain looking fantastic and him being a very key inform player in the qualifiers), Messi and Jesus.
