Russia stars among most-signed World Cup Fantasy players

Denis Cheryshev (£5.5m) and Aleksandr Golovin (£6.5m) were among the top five most transferred in players ahead of the first match of World Cup Gameround 2.

The pair recorded double-figure hauls in Russia’s 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia on Thursday night and have earned a combined 143,000+ new owners since then.

Only Diego Costa (£9.0m) and Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.0m) were signed by more World Cup Fantasy managers before Gameround 2, with 94,000+ and 132,000+ new owners respectively.

Cheryshev found the net twice while Golovin provided two assists and fired in a stoppage time direct free-kick.

Furthermore, after the first round of Group Stage fixtures only one player had a higher points-per-million than Cheryshev (2.3).

That was Sweden’s penalty-taking centre-back Andreas Granqvist (£5.0m), whose goal and clean sheet against South Korea gave him a points-per-million of 2.4.

Despite the transfer market shift towards Russia midfield assets, the most popular player in tonight’s first match of Gameround 2 is Ahmed Hegazy (£4.5m).

The Egyptian centre-back continues to reap the benefits of a budget price and Fantasy managers will be encouraged by his role in keeping much-fancied Uruguay out for nearly a whole 90 minutes. He sits in 11% of teams tonight.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah could make his World Cup bow tonight, with

It remains to be seen whether Russia can replicate the attacking display put on against Saudi Arabia as Egypt are expected to be a much sterner test.

START LINE-UPS

RUSSIA (4-2-3-1): Akinfeev; Fernandes, Kutepov, Ignashevich, Zhirkov; Gazinskiy, Zobnin, Golovin, Cheryshev, Samedov; Dzyuba.

EGYPT XI (4-2-3-1): El-Shenawy; Abdel Shafy, Hegazy, Gabr, Fathy; Hamed, Elneny; Trezeguet, El Said, Salah; Mohsen.

I'm sticking. You'd need your other striker to get a brace for +2pts, or a hattrick for +6pts, unless you cap somewhere else and get lucky. It's not worth the risk, and if your other player does do well you'll get the single points for him anyway without having to gamble.

          "That injury absolutely ruined him."

He just scored in his first game back.

Terrible tactics from Egypt. Kept trying to play long balls against a team who are very good in the air. As soon as they starting passing it about they cause Russia problems and get a penalty. Frustrating

Egypt are very poor going forwards. Not sure what fully fit Salah would have helped so much

True. I’m not really feeling for Egypt (lol) but I’m gutted for Salah as a player with the season he had.

If you're not gonna captain Ronaldo, why did you pay 12m for him?

This kind of rationale works for FPL, but not with rolling captains.

It does when it's only the first game and such a low score.

So rationale is that his score is too low, and that you think Ronaldo will score higher. If Cherry got 16 points, the rationale would fail.

Aye but that's not the scenario though. The scenario is the current one.

Ronaldo is expensive in both scenarios, so I don't see why his expense should be the reason to captain him in one scenario, but not the other.

Because for 12m, it's reasonable to expect him to score more than 7 points, but not necessarily more than 16.

We're talking about: "If you're not gonna captain Ronaldo, why did you pay 12m for him?". As you say, there's reason to not captain him, despite his price.

The difference between the scenarios is the amount of points your initial captain has got, and that's exactly why you say you should or shouldn't switch captains (the number of points!). So "If you're not gonna captain Ronaldo, why did you pay 12m for him?" does not represent your rationale for keeping or switching captaincy. It represents the view that the points of your initial captain pick doesn't matter.

In FPL, though, you don't get information about the points that other players get, so If you're not gonna captain Ronaldo, why did you pay 12m for him?" makes more sense, though I would say that this still isn't a hard rule for each week, but a decent guide for your overall team structure. I.e. you should buy an expensive player if you plan to captain him often (though not necessaryily every week, since circumstances can change).

I've not written that particularly well, but I'm busy doing other things. It all seems very obvious to me, tbh. I didn't like the general tone on this page of making people feel inadequate for asking the reasonable question about where the threshold should be for switching captains. It's quite obvious that the threshold is debatable, and that you shouldn't captain Ronaldo simply because you've already spent the money on him.

He meant why pay 12m for Ronaldo (2.5m more than Cavani and 3m more than Costa who play on the same day) if you're not going to captain him.

But he replied saying because he had a lot of money to spend which is fair enough too.

This should always be on a case by case basis.
My recommendation is if you got a good return be happy and move on. Don't be greedy.

Thing is Ron is their main man , he will be involved in whatever way possible , so is a safe pick in such an unpredictable tournament ,
For eg - You don't know which German player you want..Mueller Kroos or Werner

I forgot the deadline. So, I have my team set up from first week. But the matchdays are different now. For instance, can I sub out Uzoho(currently I have Uzoho) for Caballero, and get Uzoho on if Caballero does poor?

Russian defense is bad in general. They may be left exposed against Uruguay. So far they have played against poor opposition. But I have seen them struggle with the ball and picking a decent pass at times. Good thing for Cavani/Suarez?
