Russia suffered their heaviest ever World Cup loss just two matches after recording one of their best ever wins in the competition.

Their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Uruguay on Monday will surely quell interest in their Fantasy players as they head into a second round match-up with Spain.

Meanwhile, Uruguay finally lived up to their potential after two flat performances in their two opening matches.

URUGUAY 3-0 RUSSIA

TOP SCORING PLAYERS

  • Luis Suarez (£10.5m) – 6 points
  • Edinson Cavani (£9.5m) – 6 points
  • Fernando Muslera (£5.5m) – 6 points
  • Diego Godin (£5.5m) – 6 points
  • Martin Caceres (£5.5m) – 6 points
  • Sebastian Coates (£5.0m) – 6 points

It was a disastrous afternoon for Denis Cheryshev (£5.5m) owners on Monday as Russia failed their first real test of the World Cup.

Having found the net three times in his opening two fixtures, Cheryshev scored an own-goal and was substituted in the first-half after Igor Smolnikov (£4.5m) was sent off. His score for Gameround 3 was minus one after being the most transferred in player (175,000+ new owners).

Luis Suarez (£10.5m) opened the scoring from a free-kick in the 10th minute, after Rodrigo Bentancur (£5.0m) was fouled on the edge of the penalty area. The Barcelona man fired the set-piece straight into the bottom right-hand corner, thanks to Sergei Ignashevich (£4.5m) clearing Edinson Cavani (£9.5m) out of the wall.

It was Diego Laxalt’s (£5.0m) shot from outside the box which took a huge deflection from Cheryshev on its way into the net. Initirially the Uruguay man was accredited with the goal but later in the half it was confirmed Cheryshev would be given the own-goal.

That came through after Cheryshev had been replaced by Mario Fernandes (£5.0m) in the aftermath of Smolnikov’s sending off. He was shown a second yellow card in the 36th minute for a foul on Laxalt.

Russia offered more threat in the second half although Fernando Muslera (£5.5m) was only forced into one save due to the strong defensive work of Diego Godin (£5.5m).

Uruguay rounded off the scoring late-on with Cavani finally getting his first goal of the tournament, after 12 unsuccessful attempts. Godin’s header from a corner was well-saved by Akinfeev but Cavani was on-hand to knock in the rebound.

Aleksandr Golovin (£6.5m) did not feature in the match despite starring in both of Russia’s previous wins.

URUGUAY XI (3-5-2): Muslera; Coates, Godin, Caceres; Laxalt, Torreira, Bentancur (De Arrascaeta 63’), Vecino, Nandez (Rodriguez 73’); Suarez, Cavani (Gomez 93’).

RUSSIA XI (4-2-3-1): Akinfeev; Kudryashov, Kutepov, Ignashevich, Smolnikov; Gazinskiy (Kuzyaev 46’), Zobnin; Cheryshev (Fernandes 38’), Aleksey Miranchuk (Smolov 60’), Samedov; Dzyuba.

SAUDI ARABIA 2-1 EGYPT

TOP SCORING PLAYERS

  • Essam El-Hadary (£4.5m) – 7 points
  • Salman Al-Faraj (£5.0m) – 7 points
  • Mohamed Salah (£8.5m) – 6 points
  • Abdallah El Said (£6.0m) – 5 points
  • Abdullah Otayf (£5.0m) – 5 points

Owners of Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary (£4.5m) were delighted with an impressive eight-point haul even though his side were defeated by Saudi Arabia. The 45-year-old saved a Fahad Al-Muwallad (£6.5m) penalty in the first-half and also an additional two points for saves.

Meanwhile Mohamed Salah (£8.5m) pulled in six points but could have easily added more to his tally as he missed a sitter in the first half. Having opened the scoring by chipping over the goalkeeper from an Abdallah El Said (£6.0m) pass in the 22nd minute, he was put clean through again moments after and dragged wide.

At the end of the half Egypt conceded two penalties. The first was given away for handball by Ahmed Fathy (£5.0m) but El-Hadary saved Al-Muwallad’s effort.

Shortly after, Ali Gabr (£4.5m) was adjudged to have bundled Al-Muwallad over and this time Salman Al-Faraj (£5.0m) slotted home.

Saudi Arabia were the more exciting side in the second-half and got their deserved winner in stoppage time when Salem Al-Dawsari (£5.0m) lashed home after a flick-on from Abdullah Otayf (£5.0m).

SAUDI ARABIA XI (4-3-2-1): Al-Mosilem; Osama Hawsawi, Al-Burayk, Yasser, M Hawsawi; Al-Faraj, Bahbir (Aseri 65’), Otayf; Al-Mogahwi, Al-Dawsari; Al-Muwallad (Al-Shehri 79’).

EGYPT XI (4-2-3-1): El-Hadary; Abdel Shafy, Hegazy, Gabr, Fathy; Hamed, Elneny; Trezeguet (Kahraba 81’), Said (Warda 45), Salah; Mohsen (Sobhi 64’).

Right side of the bracket looks much easier than the left one, especially bottom right. The loser of the match between England and Belgium will probably play Colombia in 1/16, then Mexico/Switzerland and the winner of Spain/Croatia in semis.

The winner though has an easier 1/16 with Senegal/Japan but then goes straight onto what will probably be Brazil or Germany in 1/8 then France/Argentina/Portugal/Uruguay in semis.

Left side of the bracket will be wild if everything pans out as expected. Uruguay, Portugal, France, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Senegal/Japan, Belgium/England looks very likely.

4 from Spain looks the way to go with Russia, followed by Croatia. Then maybe 4 from whoever will be second in the group between England and Belgium depending on if you think they will beat Colombia. Maybe a guy or two from Croatia and two/three from whoever plays Senegal/Japan even though its followed by Brazil/Germany. Thats probably a decent core with flair picks in between based on everyones predictions.

getting 4 from any team when you still have wildcard is fine if you dont you could come unstuck really easy

someone posted earlier that getting 1 player from 15 different teams should guarantee 8 going into the qf with 3 subs but i would rather gamble on the teams who are predicted to win and take it on the chin if they lose

They need to come up with an idea for a new chip to replace the bench boost in the mcdonald's game before the next world cup. It just doesn't work in a fantasy football game where you can make substitutes.

They need to revert to the 2014 game. That was a nice format.

It's a strong possibility. Will be interesting to the difference that Messi makes this time and if he's actually motivated to play or not. No ones really sure what they're going to get out of Argentina tomorrow. So much internal turmoil it's hard to predict so in the words of Big Ron "It could really go either way" 🙂

My brother is away on holiday without internet and has asked me to take care of his team.

    How do substitutes work?

Currently he has Inui starting. Can I sub him out for Ljajic right now, and still sub Inui in later in the week?

No. Once you sub out you lose those points unless you're playing Bench Boost.

Yes you can. Japan match is 1 day after serbia, so you can change to inui if ljajic doesn't deliver

I've seen a couple of footie fans state "If such and such happens I'll get a tattoo of" Is this the latest fashion?
The latest one I saw on the eve of the England match (Tweet since deleted) was someone say they'd get a tattoo if Stones scores against Panama...
Kyle Walker offered to pay too 😆

Glad that I held off on wildcard despite my team looking a little dodgy. All of my players have returned thus far:
    Isco
    Cavani
    Muslera (yet again)
AlDawsari (knew he'd prove a shrewd signing haha)

Very - it was an unlucky draw in part as in round 1 we easily outscored France and Australia (who played each other). And then lost by 6 essentially because of an opponent's bench boost... Oh well, it's looking promising for our overall rank at least!

I know there’s a long time for fixtures to be closed, but considering how much is defined already I think we can have a good idea on how to do it. 3x Spain, England, Belgium. That’s 9. Add that to a few budget buys (likes of Layun, Mojica, Sabaly) and you’re pretty much done. Totally wrong thinking?

    1. Yankee Toffee
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 7 months ago

Wouldn't want to put too many eggs in those baskets b.c if one of them goes out we only have 3FT next round. It's a bit too tight for comfort imho. Although 3 Spain players does make sense. Would like to see some France as well in the squad.

Brazil/Germany (if that happens) is too close to call so I might avoid for now with maybe the possibility of holding onto Fagner or Coutinho.

I'm struggling to find budget buys for teams that could get through the 1st stage of knockout at least, you mentioned Layun, Mojica and Sabaly. If Japan goes through there are some obvious ones there. Also Uruguay's midfield and the Swiss defense (if they go through). But what else to fill those gaps?

      1. JLAEST
        • 11 Years

Don’t think there’s much more than that. Even Uruguay midfield is a stretch for me.

That high risk move is on many without a WC will likely try and it could really backfire badly!

Should have added this strategy only applies if you still have the wildcard, of course (and it’s the whole reasoning behind why I decided to keep it this far)

France is also a good shout indeed. Either against Nigeria/Iceland or a destroyed Argentina

I've already used my wc but am way out so I'm just planning on having fun with it and gambling. If I was actually taking it seriously though I would take 3 Spain, some from the second team in group g, and some from other teams to spread the risk

Of course, no transfers yet, but just thinking ahead to next round. Thoughts on this? Most of these teams are already through.

    Kane, Kaku, Griez/Costa
    Coutinho, Lingard, Carrasco, Isco, Bentacur/Layun
    Carvajal, Muenier, Trippier, Mojica/Pavard, Sabaly/Sakai
    Muslera, Lloris/Pickford

I'm obviously favoring Uruguay over Portugal here. And no Germany.
