Great Expectations

Mkhitaryan’s all-round game and discount price could make him essential

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s all-round game may just make him a near-essential figure in Fantasy Premier League squads this season.

The Armenian’s potential both for goals and assists should make his cost of £7.0m well worth paying, especially in a season where many of the more familiar names in midfield and attack are more expensive.

With just 180 FPL points across two campaigns in English football, now is the time to expect a personal-best total score from Mkhitaryan.

CREATIVITY

There is no doubting that Mkhitaryan’s forte is the ability to provide assists for his team-mates, and his underlying numbers from 2017/18 suggest he’ll be one of Arsenal’s chief creators this term. Even in the first 10 Gameweeks of last season, while he was still a regular starter at Manchester United, only three midfielders created more chances than his 23. Just two of those recorded more than his five assists, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) and David Silva (£8.5m), both with six assists in one more appearance than the Armenian. Upon moving to Arsenal in January, only Mesut Özil (£8.5m) created more chances than Mkhitaryan among Arsenal assets, but the Armenian still provided more assists than his German colleague (four to three).

Where Mkhitaryan really stood out across the season was when it came to minutes per big chance, the most crucial statistic given his game-time was limited to just 20 starts. His 11 big chances created in 1,727 minutes of football averaged out at one every 157 minutes. That was actually better than De Bruyne, who topped the charts both for big chances created (19) and FPL assists (20), but could still only fashion a big chance every 162.3 minutes, compared to Mkhitaryan.

GOALS ON THE SIDE

On top of his creativity, Mkhitaryan also offers a much better goal threat than any of the other midfield options at Arsenal. Of the Gunners assets, only striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) had more shots on goal between Gameweeks 25 and 38, the Gabonese international also the only one of Mkhitaryan’s team-mates to best him for efforts in the box and accuracy too. We recently discovered that Özil had the potential to be Arsenal’s key creator this season, but Mkhitaryan’s ability to combine his similar assist potential with better goal-threat than the German gives him a huge edge as far as FPL is concerned, with a saving of £1.5m.

HOME COMFORTS

Mkhitaryan should benefit from being deployed on the right flank of attacking midfield for an entire campaign in 2018/19, where he is most comfortable. Part of the reason that he struggled to fit in at Manchester United was because he was used in a central number 10 role, but since moving to Arsenal he has switched back out to the right flank. It was in this position that he was so successful back in his Borussia Dortmund days. He has already reaped some of the benefits of a return to the flanks, with Granit Xhaka (£5.5m) the only Arsenal player to attempt more crosses between Gameweek 25 and 38 – and that was a result of the Swiss international’s set-piece responsibilities.

AU-BRO-MEYANG

A full season alongside his former Dortmund colleague Aubameyang will only bring out the best in Mkhitaryan. In the final campaign that the pair were together in Germany (2015/16) at Dortmund they combined for 59 goals and 31 assists between them, their relationship clearly a strong one. That partnership has already been rekindled in part in the latter half of 2017/18. Of the four assists Mkhitaryan supplied since joining Arsenal, half of them were for Aubameyang, who set up one of the Armenian’s two goals in Arsenal colours.

GOOD START

Aside from facing Manchester City and Chelsea in the first two Gameweeks, Arsenal have very appealing fixtures in the early months of 2018/19 which should give Mkhitaryan a clear run at building up confidence. From Gameweek 3 to 10 the Gunners don’t face a single member of last season’s top six. But we shouldn’t necessarily be avoiding Mkhitaryan in Gameweeks 1 and 2. Manchester City are still without their key players as they rest after the World Cup and may name a second-string side at the Emirates on August 12, creating an opportunity for some attacking returns for Arsenal. Meanwhile, Chelsea could take time to adapt to new manager Maurizio Sarri.

What do people think of this?

    Pickford --- Stecklenberg
Mendy ---- Shaw --- Van Dijk --- Tarkowski --- Holebas
Mane --- Sanchez --- Richalrson --- Redmond--- Neves
    Arno --- Firmino---- Aguero

I'm a fixtures over form so planning to go De Bruyne to Sanchez. Aguero to Aubu in gw3. Need to assess how Richardson is getting on and might bring in miki with the 0.5 in the bank. Opinions?

I've done some playing around with the FPL data, and tried to see how badly price is skewed in favour of the defensive players, and how expensive attackers are for what you get:

I removed players who had played less than 1900 mins (as a proxy for nailedness) and who had scored less than 3 points/game (as a proxy for players who may be good but not in FPL - a la Kante)

    This is what I found:
GKs vs DEFs - Defs are 12.3% more expensive than GKs, and get 1.3% more points per game
GKs vs MIDs - Mids are 54.2% more expensive than GKs, and get 13.6% more points per game
GKs vs FWDs - Fwds are 72.0% more expensive than GKs, and get 15.8% more points per game

DEFs vs MIDs - Mids are 37.3% more expensive than Defs, and get 12.0% more points per game
DEFs vs FWDs - Fwds are 53.1% more expensive than Mids, and get 14.3% more points per game

MIDs vs FWDs - Fwds are 11.5% more expensive than Mids, and get 2.0% more points per game

These are all averages, and don't include players who played half a season (Auba etc) so to be taken with a pinch of salt, but it looks like 5-4-1 is what this is pointing to. Discuss?

I am not patient enough or boring enough to stick with a 5-4-1 even if it was the right decision.

      1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…
        • 7 Years

Consider this though - surely if 5-4-1 was the right decision, someone would have won it that way by now. I don't buy that literally every player to have won before has won it playing suboptimally.

Whenever someone posts a stats analysis it points toward 5-4-1 with at most two big hitters above 10.0. But people will keep picking 3 at the back with Cedric, Tomkins etc.

Appreciate the effort. That defenders are the best value is old news. But you shouldn't have only cheap players either. If you play 5 at the back you lose the chance to rotate defenders according to opposition which is the best way to get full value out of your defense - two 4,5s can perform as well as a 5,5 if you rotate them well.

This is very informative because it's something I've been trying to work out for weeks. Although I've always thought the value was in defence. Midfielders though are always the top scorers so I'm tempted to go for a 4-5-1.

On average, that might be true, but we have to deal with discreet players, some of whom vary greatly in their production (or lack thereof). You don’t pick an average 9-10 forward; you pick Morata or Firmino or Vardy.

    6. SW6
      • 12 Years
      6 years, 3 months ago

If you believe fully in your methodology and the analysis that you've done, and that the results mean what you say they have then go for 4-5-1.

Personally taking an average of all players means nothing to me - we are not picking all players, or the average, but independent choices within each category.
Your results are based on one set of data. This season is new and will not necessarily be the same.
The biggest issue for me with this and so many of the other 'statistical' analysis that gets done on here and on twitter is it always fails to grasp what is at the core of FPL - player performances. This is factor is fundamental to scoring more than position or anything else. If there are no/few ~6m mids or forwards performing then yeah go for premium defenders instead. FPL is not a complex game, make decisions based on form and what you watch not on stats from last season.

You also have to consider there many more defenders than forwards to choose from, thus increasing their point potential. For every striker there are 4 defenders.

Also have to consider the value of the captaincy in this game, you have to get that right especially when attackers have games with multiple goal involvement.

How many people are willing to stick to a 4-5-1 all season? Not many I reckon

      1. SW6
        • 12 Years
        6 years, 3 months ago

Agree. And also, importantly, when one defender 'succeeds' they all do - i.e. they all get CS. With the 6 mids and attackers that are regulars a goal does not mean returns for them all, they are split between them if they're lucky. There is greater hierarchy between good picks and bad picks for midfielders and forwards than with defenders whose scores group together more

Hull were a sinking ship who looked dead set to go down. He very nearly kept them up so that point is rubbish. As for Watford, they're not a top half team anyway. They're mid-table fodder. It's unsurprising they finished there.

People on here are truly deluded about Marco Silva for some reason. Watford were wholly unimpressive under him and 30% winrate is atrocious. "Almost keeping a side up" is not a feat to brag about either. His stats after taking over Hull were average for a mid season manager swap.

    Firmino v Lacazette debate

Firmino- 15 goals and 8 assists
Lacazette- 14 goals and 5 assists

However, Lacazette played around 600 mins less for just 1 goal and 3 assists less than Firmino due to injury.
Imagine he stays injury free with a full season of Auba up there with him...

It does paint a rosy picture, but we don't know how Emery will line them up. To add to your point, Firmino is a much better player and will continue to rake in bonus points at a higher rate than Laca.

Just having a look at his stats. Played 40 times last season and 24 years old

      Looks like a decent signing

Slight twist on the norm here:

    Ederson
    Robertson / Bailly / Tomkins
    Salah / Mané / Richarlison / Hughes
    Aguero / Lacazette / Arnautovic

    Button // Cedric / 4.5 / Wan-Bissaka

    - Covers City attack
    - Retains double Liverpool attack
    - Retains Arsenal attack
    - Decent other midfield options
    - Nailed Keeper
    - Covers United defense

    Questions around Aguero starting perhaps.

    What do you think?

If I could sell any one player from leicester, it would be him. It's looking increasingly likely that he's the ringleader behind the sackings of all our managers in recent years. Plus he bullied his way into the starting line-up over Dragovic just because he's captain, costing us 7th.

    Hi guys.
I really like my first draft, but maybe you guys can tell me if I'm blind or not!

    Ryan - Fabianski

    Robertson - Baines - Davies - Cedric - Wan-Bissaka

    Sané - Mané - Gross - Jota - Kenedy

    Aubameyang - Firmino - Tosun

Not feeling it for a salah less team I’m afraid.

Not sure where you have spread the funds but to me looks very much like a salah team !!

You have a benching headache every week in that front 8. Actually you don’t because Kennedy fixtures bad therefore he is kind of a 0.5 waste

I'm really gutted - was hoping Leicester would be in for him, we're in dire need of someone exactly like him... Would have been miles better than anyone else we have.

Then again, I would play a wet fish ahead of Gray

Only saw a bit from him at the WC for Iran so its tough to draw conclusions.

One thing is certain, you always have to be careful with players coming from the Dutch league, their stats always seem to be hyper inflated and don't normally translate to the PL.

Jahanbakhsh could be an exception though

Prefer Coleman over Bailly for the same price...Think the CS potential is similar for the first 5 weeks and he is much more attack-minded.

Any changes you'd make to my squad for the first few GWs?

    GK: Pickford
    DEF: Coleman, Mendy, Alex-Arnold
    MID: Salah, Mahrez, Jota, Godmundsson
    FWD: Aguero, Firmino, Tosun

Bench: Speroni; Wan-Bissaka, Jack Simpson, Chalobah

    Thanks,

This happens most seasons when teams have nothing to play for.
I’m definitely going Zaha/Arnie to start off with. You know what your buying...
Wait and see with Tosun for me.

      1. The Wanton Trader
        • 7 Years

        It seems that way.
Martial is another example of that.
Just cos he’s likely to start the first couple of games he’s suddenly a good pick.
He ain’t all that and you’d only have to transfer him out again in the near future.

Martial, Sanchez, Richarlison, Tosun, Walcott just off the top of my head. Could say the of the same for everyone adventuring into triple City with trash on the bench as well, who will undoubtedly be on here whining when their players get rotated in GW2.
