FPL Question Time: Gameweek 2 transfer strategies, World Cup stars and Alonso haul

Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers have answered some of your questions in time for your Gameweek 2 preparation.

Key subjects topics have been touched on such as transfer strategies, the unexpected impact of returning World Cup stars and Marcos Alonso’s (£6.5m) impressive Gameweek 1 haul.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 2 Question Time:

FPL General – Has finished in the top 500 in three of the last four seasons and is a big influencer in the FPL Twitter-sphere.

Ben McNair – Australian FPL manager Ben has four finishes inside the top 5,000 so far and is an expert in all things metrics-related.

Holly Shand – Founder of the popular Fantasy Football Community website and recent video star for Official FPL.

Josh and Brandon from Always Cheating Podcast – The brains behind popular American-based FPL podcast ‘Always Cheating’.

QUESTION 1 – FPL GENERAL

Is Gameweek 2 a definite time to save a transfer unless your team is in dire straits? Considering the planning that goes into an initial squad, is saving a transfer wise?

General: “I always plan to save my transfer in GW2 so that I’ll have two free transfers for GW3 which gives so much more flexibility.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a definite time to save though. Already, there are a couple of players that I want to bring in as soon as possible, Mendy and Mane in particular, which may change my plans this week.

“It’s important to keep an eye on the possible price changes this week as well which could prevent you from making the moves you want to make later in the week especially if you’ve got £0.0m in the bank.

“Saving a transfer is wise, but if there is a player you feel is essential, go get him.”

QUESTION 2 – BEN MCNAIR

With players from the latter stages of the World Cup coming back earlier than expected, is an international break Wildcard the most viable option to bring them in or is there a better time to do so?

Ben: “We feared the worst as the Gameweek 1 team sheets were revealed, but those of us who avoided World Cup semi-finalists got off lightly.

“A rare N’Golo Kante goal may have been what hurt our rank most. Harry Kane lacked sharpness and Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard played just 44 minutes between them. Importantly, the players we did choose tended to perform well. In the wake of it all, the only late returner attracting a lot of early transfers is Paul Pogba.

“The short answer to the question is that we need to wait and see. Using free transfers and the odd judicious hit might see us through the reintegration of World Cup semi-finalists. The Wildcard will be there when we need it.

“It’s nice playing the Wildcard in an international break as there tend to be a few more price changes and injuries and – let’s be honest – we get to enjoy the kid-in-a-candy-store experience over what would otherwise be a barren weekend.

“But, I wouldn’t get hung up on it. When you have several fires to put out and the prospective performance of a Wildcard squad looks a lot better than that of your current squad – that’s the time to play it.”

QUESTION THREE – HOLLY SHAND

How quickly do we jump on cheap bandwagons like Pedro, Kante, Jorginho, Neves or Wilson? Is it wise to wait a week or two or get in early and make some money?

Holly: “I would give it at least another week before jumping on the cheap bandwagons.

“Some were involved in very fortunate goals and face tougher opposition in Gameweek 2. Chelsea host Arsenal and Pedro could well lose his place while Wolves travel to Leicester and therefore won’t have home advantage.

“Moves to these low budget players will probably involve a downgrade, so you’ll still be able to afford them at a reasonable price in the next couple of weeks, if it emerges that they are the real deal.

“Holding a free transfer this week gives much greater flexibility further down the line.

“Keep them on the watchlist for now. You’ve built a team for the season, not just for one Gameweek.”

QUESTION FOUR – ALWAYS CHEATING

Do you think it’s too early to look at getting Alonso or Azpilicueta in the team? I read articles that said they wouldn’t get forward as much as least season but that wasn’t what happened in Gameweek 1?

Josh: “I hate to say ‘it’s too soon to say’ but…it’s too soon to say. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.

“The pros: strong upcoming fixtures, Sarri’s Napoli squads were some of the top defensive teams in Serie A, Alonso has great attacking instincts and Azpilicueta has been perhaps *the* preeminent set-and-forget defender for years.

“The cons: Chelsea are still transitioning from 3-4-3 to 4-3-3 and the four-at-the-back set-up should, in the long-term, hinder Alonso’s attacking potential.

“The centerback situation is completely unsettled and I don’t expect the team to truly clamp down on defense until it is.

“Also, they were playing Huddersfield, a team with one of the least-potent attacks in the Premier League. Only a week previously, a very similar squad was roundly defeated by Manchester City with Alonso and Azpilicueta not getting forward too much.

“I think the cons outweigh the pros at this point, though if I were going to pick someone in their defense I’d go with Azpilicueta for his consistency, link-up play with Morata, and the fact that he should see more attacking returns as a fullback than he did as a centerback.”

Agree. Think it'll be Kun, Jesus and Sterling, with Silva, KdB and Fernandinho behind. But it's all complete guesswork.

I think if you own any city attacker but kdb you’ve got to accept the rotation or get rid. they will all accumulate loads of points over the season even if play 2 in 3. i’m sticking with bilva until he misses more than 2 in a row

Happy with 1st week despite benching Wan-B.
    A or B?
    A) Jota to richarilson and bench TAA
    B) Save FT

    Mendy TAA Shaw Bavies
    Bilva Sanchez Mane
    Kun(c)Bobby King

Sterling or KDB? Can switch Sanchez for either (have 0.5 ITB). Think Sterling could be a big differential considering his low ownership and the home game against Huddersfield will surely have lots of City goals. I'm just slightly worried if he will start.

Sterling is loved by pep. I expect citys only change to be Kevin for Gun. But long term, obviously a rotation risk with so much talent. You have to pick two city and stick I think. They score enough.

Answer this question and you’ll have your answer.

When the game launched and you looked at the price of Sterling did you think:
      A) Too expensive.
      B) About right.
      C) Cheap.

If it’s A, which it was for me, go for KdB. One week where Sterling scores shouldn’t change your overall opinion on his price.

      If it’s B or C, choose Sterling.

Sterling and Salah in the midfield is a huge chunk of budget. I thought he was too expensive but if he carries on where he left off it could be difficult to ignore

Salah and Sterling in midfield is no different from Salah in midfield and Aguero or Auba up top.

Very much agreed. I am focusing on getting the premium midfielders as I think they are better value than the premium strikers, well for the time being at least.

            Midfield currently is:
            Salah Sanchez Mane Eriksen Richarlison

which will change to Salah Sterling/KDB Mane Hazard Richarlison come GW 4

Guess I need to bring Bilva out after GW2. Consider doing:

    Bilva -> Mikhitaryan
    Aguero -> Auba

If im going to do this I need to decide before GW2, as i know Aguero will score at least a couple against Huddersfield and make me change my mind. What do you think?

all the city players are rotation risks. if bilva can play in both those roles and on the wing then there are just more players he can rotate with, increasing his chances of gametime

Your team is very similar to mine. My concerns would be the amount you have locked in you defence and keeper which could be used to upgrade King. Silva is golddust at his price; he will get plenty of minutes and could easily work out better PP£ than anyone else in the city midfield.

Kun is Kun - take it easy

I actually really like Coleman (remember he was involved in a couple of attacks and played away v a team who had a one man advantage for an hour). I suppose that back five works if you are going to stick with 3-4-3 every week, almost fire and forget. Would be tempted to downgrade one keeper to Hamer and then weigh up what you want to do about Zaha/King.

Problem is Salah - ruins the balance of a team imo

I only didn't pick him because I was lured in by BSilva's value. Sane had a summer off and loads to prove - don't see him as a bad pick and think he will return well over the season. But, as with any City player, you have to see them as a long term investment rather than a 90 mins every week player

Speculation, but they generally tweak it.

    2. Pep says
      • 8 Years
      5 years, 8 months ago

It gets tweaked every season. Until the 1st price rise occurs no one (including fpl stats and other sites) knows the algorithm.

After the 1st rise and fall, it can then be calculated but still, red flags, yellow flags and other factors will come into play and the predictions will never be 100% accurate.

Last season, they tweaked algorithms mid season as was highlighted by fpl stats who put stickies on the page notifying users of such.

At the moment, they're working off last seasons information but it's likely incorrect.

Just a reminder on City's games against Huddersfield last season, when we all thought they would destroy them. Huddersfield parked an absolute monstroserous bus in both games. At the Kirklees, City's 2 goals came from a pen and a freak deflection from Sterling. The second game famously ended 0-0. Yes City had already won the title by then, but they still smashed the other rubbish teams around the same time.

I realise I might be overthinking this and it could easily be a 5-0 smashing, but last season's games have raised an element of doubt. Combine this with Aguero's gametime possibly being managed, I'll probably go with Salah.

"If you're Salah-less and have Mane, I think you've probably got a better captaincy choice over the next few weeks"

Never thought I'd hear such nonsense lol. Points chasing at its finest. And then throwing same random made-up criticism on Firmino too and concluding that Mane is better. Did you watch the game or just look at their points?

Mane's second goal was offside. If it was ruled out, I bet you'd have a different opinion? Firmino missed an absolute tap-in from a Milner cross in the first half. You've got to analyze their performances, not their points.

Salah just like last season was the furthest forward and had the most threat. He is the #1 captain option at Liverpool. Between Mane and Firmino, from what we saw last season and in this match, it's still a lottery.

"Firmino drops deep to create chances for his teammates" - Yeah we know. He did that last season too. Made it into your team of the season though.

"If you're joining Luke i being Salahless, and you have Mane, I think you've probably got - well, as it's proved - a better captaincy shot in gameweek one, and perhaps over the next few weeks, you've probably got, a better captaincy sh- MAYBE... I mean, I don't know. I mean, time will tell."

Yes it's nonsense, but more because it's incoherent than because he's wrong. He's hedging, and switching adverbers, and hedging some more. He's not exactly saying what you're quoting him to have said, dude 🙂

        1. Cok3y5murf
          • 7 Years
          5 years, 8 months ago

Well I wasn’t going to type the whole thing he said EXACTLY. I mean you can see how long it is. Clearly you have more patience than me.

But the hedging makes it even worse tbh. He started saying it, then he didn’t believe in it himself to finish it, so he was beating around the bush.

I argued why a definite statement on that was nonsense. He was hedging, but that doesn’t change what he intended to say right?

            • 8 Years
            5 years, 8 months ago

He started with 'perhaps', then considered 'probably', then backtracked. Better that way than saying what you quoted him as saying imo.

I kinda do understand your point, but not necessarily the frustration. And maybe we were watching two different games (nothing unusual about that) but Mane seemed the most proactive attacking player. The BPS score partly proves that point, Salah wasn't at his best form.

That's why Mane MAY be considered like an at least equal captaincy option, and there are valid points in that argument. I'd still captain Salah though.

    Rise and fall in value:

This is my first year really giving this FPL my whole heart, after actually only having read articles in here and played a local fantasy game in Denmark.

So, not being able to find answer anywhere else, can any of you help me understand the whole value system?

    1. When do players rise and fall in value? Between GWs? At a certain time? All at the same time?
    2. How much do values change? Over a GW? A season?
    3. What are some tactics to handle value change? Points over pounds?

    I bet there's a lot I don't know, so please help.

    Thanks!

      1. A player rises/falls when he hits the target set for transfers in/out. This happens constantly throughout the season. Price changes (if there are any) occur at around 2:15 am GMT.

      2. A player can rise/fall a maximum of .3 million per week. This is unlimited throughout the season.

      3. It's up to the individual. Some like to build team value to have more cash later in the season (this may involve using extra transfers 'hits') Some are 'points over pounds' and don't like to use transfers solely to build TV.

      http://www.fplstatistics.co.uk/
use the guide on the page it will tell you how when and who or hoe much.pretty ok for a free tool
if you want to play the value game you need to take a lot of points hits to jump on all the bandwagon over the season.
your overall ranking suffers but your value increases like these guys with 115 million value end of the season.
I am not playing much into value to be quit honest so cant help much with the tactics part of it.

      good luck 🙂

      1. Between 1-2am GMT if they have had a lot of sales/purchases
      2. 0.1 at a time and can be as much as over a million in total

    Most likely I will do Ederson&Lowton --> Hart&Mendy.
If I save FT this week, however, I will not be able to buy Mendy with 2 FT's next week (due to price increase). I will definitely have to go to -4, so it's better to do it now and buy Mendy at a price of 6 million.

Personally I am accepting that I missed the boat on Mendy. I had my reasons for picking VvD as my 6.0 defender and they still apply. Mendy isn't scoring 15 points every week; other 6.0 defenders will be available without taking a hit
