Selection

Watchlist Update – Arsenal fixture swing and Alonso form are key changes

Our Watchlist player rankings have now been revised following the first two Gameweeks of the 2018/19 season.

The Watchlist can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet. It acts as a collection of our current thoughts on player selection for each position, also citing the factors that affect their ranking on the list.

As a general rule, we try to commit to just one player per position per club. However, in some cases we where we believe double-coverage is advisable, two players will be listed instead. We’ve got further examples of that this week.

Form continues to play the overriding role in the factors available to us given that we are just two weeks into the season.

GOALKEEPERS

Ederson (£5.5m) sits atop the list of goalkeepers still, even if Manchester City failed to keep a clean sheet against Huddersfield. Even still, his assist for Sergio Aguero’s (£11.1m) first goal means he has averaged 6.5 points per game so far this season, and still has a favourable run of fixtures.

Petr Cech (£5.0m) rises slightly now that Arsenal have come out on the other side of a tough opening two Gameweeks and now face a more favourable run of matches.

Despite Cardiff’s tough fixtures, Neil Etheridge (£4.5m) simply had to go into the Watchlist after saving two penalties in as many Gameweeks.

DEFENDERS

Now without a rotation risk, Marcos Alonso’s (£6.6m) third attacking return in two Gameweeks sees him jump up the rankings. The Chelsea man is now behind only Benjamin Mendy (£6.2m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.0m), who remain the top two. Both players are still in top form and continue to have great fixtures.

Luke Shaw (£5.1m) receives similar treatment now that he has two two goal involvements in as many Gameweeks to the start the 2018/19 campaign.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s (£4.1m) red card in Gameweek 2 rules him out of Gameweek 3, damaging his appeal somewhat. However, the extreme value he offers in a strong defence means the Crystal Palace man remains in the Watchlist for his Gameweek 4 return.

Steve Cook (£4.6m) has shot right up after his goal and assist against West Ham, adding to his six-point haul from Gameweek 1.

Ricardo Pereira (£5.0m) makes a deserved appearance in the list after making it two assists in two as Leicester beat Wolves in Gameweek 2. As you will have seen from our latest Big Numbers article, he has the potential for more attacking returns this season.

After returning from World Cup leave in Gameweek 2, Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) gets a mention now that he has wrestled some set piece responsibilities away from Christian Eriksen (£9.5m).

MIDFIELDERS

The form and fixtures of Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Richarlison (£6.8m) and Sadio Mané (£9.8m) make them the top three midfield options in FPL right now.

Joining them in the top four of the Watchlist is Arsenal man Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.1m) after his goal and assist against Chelsea. The Gunners now have a run of favourable games until a home meeting with Liverpool in Gameweek 11. The only factor that could detract from Mkhitaryan’s appeal is a slight risk of rotation with Arsenal’s front-three a little unsettled currently.

Pedro (£6.6m) remains the highest Chelsea option after scoring twice in the first two Gameweeks, although he still carries some rotation risk. That’s because Eden Hazard (£10.5m) is pushing a return to the side although Maurizio Sarri still seems to insist he is not ready to start matches yet.

Even though he played at right wing-back against Huddersfield and was not involved in any of Manchester City’s goals, Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) keeps his place as the highest rated midfielder from the champions, simply on account of his likelihood of starts. The absence of Kevin de Bruyne (£9.8m) and his versatility make him harder to drop than most of his team-mates right now. Meanwhile, Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) loses his place in the list having registered just 85 minutes in two matches so far.

Ryan Fraser (£5.5m) receives a boost as his form continues ahead of long period of appealing fixtures for Bournemouth. The Scottish winger now has a goal and an assist in his first two outings with a porous Everton defence up next for him at the Vitality Stadium. James Maddison’s (£6.5m) first goal of the season also sneaks him into the Watchlist.

FORWARDS

That Arsenal fixture swing has propelled Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) up the rankings. However, he is still marked with a C for form after failing to record any attacking returns in the first two Gameweeks.

Conversely, Callum Wilson (£6.1m) has three to his name making it very difficult for us not to push him up the Watchlist with Everton coming to Bournemouth this week.

Harry Kane (£12.5m) is also on the rise after finally proving he is capable of scoring a Premier League goal in August. However, we can’t attach fixtures as factor to him until after Tottenham have got a Gameweek 3 trip to Manchester United out of the way.

Differential Danny Ings (£5.5m) has managed 10 goal attempts in the first two matches, getting himself a goal against Everton in Gameweek 2. While Southampton’s fixtures are a little uninspiring, the former Burnley and Liverpool man can offer value at his price point.

Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) continues to fall down the Watchlist. Salah and Mané are clearly the go-to attacking options with defence also needed to be covered by the three-player Liverpool allocation.

What's everyone's thoughts on fraser? Could he keep up the returns?

Considering shaw + moura > alonso + fraser for -4. Would fraser/cairney my 4th mid

I wouldn't take a hit to bring him in, but he does look in form.

Fraser was my preseason punt as his stats from last year were impressive and he looked good in pre ,seems to me that with Stan out he's the creative hub for them and seems great value at 5.5 as a 4th mid ,I'm super happy with him and if he keeps rolling in those assists with the odd goal he could b a season keeper imo

    Mendy Coleman Bertrand Daniels
    Salah(c) Mane Mkhi Bilva
    Firmino Ings

Already transferred Mkhi in this week.
    Think 3 options now;
    1) Bertrand to Alonso/PVA (-4)
    2) Kamara to Zaha/Mitro (-4)
    3) Wait til next week and do one of the above on a FT??

You probably don’t need to take a hit here because your XI have decent fixtures. If any though, I’d get Mitro for a poor looking Burnley at home. Side note, do you have a plan for Daniels when Rico returns? It looks like he may dislodge him at LB.

I'd sell Firmino. Against low block teams where you'd expect him to do well, he is dropping into midfield to create a diamond formation- a deliberate tactic from Klopp to try and beat these kind of teams that Liverpool tend to struggle against

not sure i understand this guendouzi thing....... unless youre going to play him he takes up a valuable elite team place, which if you want to swap out to a mkhi or similar later youll struggle to do without multiple hits

4.5 playing central midfielder, for a top 6 side, good 2nd or third sub. Gunners defence is a no go zone, so he’s not restricting a slot

    2. Kiwi Don
      • 12 Years
      5 years, 8 months ago

I don’t rate Arsenal defence, have Mkhitaryan and monitoring Auba and see him as a bench player who might do ok with a good run of fixtures. Also have 0.5 itb to upgrade to Brooks or Hughes if necessary.

Not trying to be smart but Arsenal are hardly an elite team. Don’t think there’s much danger in us wanting to treble up at any point. That being said, I would never go for Guendouzi and haven’t seen too many people suggest they will either

The hot topic today is about moving Salah on...a guy who is on track to beat last seasons total..has a goal and 2 assists, has more shots than Mane...I heard this thing about if you filter out shots in the box and on target vs Mane they are the same? Anyone realistically thinks that will stay like that over the full season?

Alot of people are losing their mind.

Salah is incredible - there's no denying that. But from GWs 4-8 there's a legitimate shout to replace him IF you're not going to captain him. I think there's only match in that sequence that I would give him the armband over Auba/Kun and that's Southampton at home. I may just captain Mane in that game. 13.0 for someone who you won't captain is too much. I will look to reinvest his funds and then possibly wildcard him back in for GW9.

      1. XabiAlonso
        • 8 Years

That is a fine reason but he could still easily tick along with 8-10 points in those games as Liverpool are capable of putting 3 away against each of them in Wk4-8. You could find yourself 20 points down if your replacements don’t fire

For once , someone actually seeing this the same as me ,Salah has been unlucky so far fantasy wise v mane ,Salah on 8+9 could v v easily have been 14+15 and then all the talk on here would b how to get mo back for those without ,feels to me like the Salah non owners have v much dodged a bullet so far and those looking to sell on wildcard are about to walk straight thru the line of fire ,I for one will b keeping til at least first wildcard (international break likely timing for it for me) then reassessing after more than just 2 games

Mane started stronger than Salah last season and look where they finished respectively. These Salahsceptics make me sick.

Salah has continued like last season. He was a great captain because he hardly ever blanked. There will always be some players who keep level or beat him over short periods of time but the key is consistency and that is why he is priced so high and why people still own him.
I can see the arguments not to have him but I prefer Wilson and Salah vs Mhki and Auba - mainly because salah makes such a great captain.
If my team has no big problems in a few weeks time I may consider removing him for weeks 7&8 to get Kane in and then swap back but my team would need to continue to be very settled for these moves.

Looking at the Palace vs Liverpool highlights, Salah had several good chances. I reckon he could explode this week with a big score. Still long term I feel he will outscore Mane by some way.

Looks good. I would maybe consider a way of getting Mane in? But that would mean maybe losing one of your premium defenders, so maybe not. Either way, gives you room for manoeuvre.

If you go with 4.5m GK instead of Ederson, you can have Ings instead of Kamara.

This idea keep me tinkering between Ederson and 4.5m GK.

How can you compare this Arsenal team to last season? New manager, new tactics, new style, new everything. They won't play like they did last season, it's a ridiculous comparison to make.

Sort of differential. Sterling didnt start last one. So was thinking if he could explode this week. Or if Dilva in absence of KDB will be their main assist provider.

I'm starting with Hamer (out of necessity as Patricio has City), but was wondering if there's a chance he could get dropped after the thrashing at City?

Hamer has the better odds for a clean sheet I think.

    Thinking of doing...
Week 3: Bilva to Richarlison, then...
Week 4: Downgrade Cairney/Shaw to upgrade Patricio to Ederson, for free. Thoughts?

    Now on 2FT, 0.0ITB:
    Hamer (Patricio)
    VVD / Mendy / Shaw (Peltier / Wan-Bis)
    Salah / Mane / Bilva / Neves / Cairney
    Aguero / Auba (Kamara)

    Cheers

Klopp defending Ozil. Also seen some rumours that Klopp wants to sign him. Can you imagine how good Liverpool's line up would look if Ozil was signed. It would probably look something like

    ----------Wijnaldum-----
    ---Keita------------Milner-----
    --Salah---Firmino---Mane--
