There is plenty of Mo Salah or No Salah talk among those currently on their Wildcards. However, the FPL community seems to be reluctant to break down the defensive template of Benjamin Mendy, Marcos Alonso, and Andy Robertson. While I believe that the first two are essential, I would seriously consider going without Andy Robertson – especially for those who do not have him in the first place.

The argument for not owning

The case for not owning Robertson in the next 4 GWs:

1. Liverpool have horrible fixtures: tot, SOU, che, MCI. Apart from the Southampton game there is a low probability of clean sheet points. Strong opponents may also mean that Robertson will have more defensive duties, hampering his attacking potential.

2. Robertson may be rested. Liverpool also have Champions league fixtures against PSG and Napoli and a League Cup match against Chelsea during the same period.

3. Instead of chasing points, which Robertson got against weaker opponents, you can get in some nice differentials and save some money at the same time.

Other options

Harry Maguire, 5.5m – bou, HUD, new, EVE. Always a threat from set pieces. The goal against Southampton also showed that he is a threat from open play as well.

Hector Bellerin, 5.4m – new, EVE, WAT, ful. No clean sheets for Arsenal yet this season, however only Bournemouth and Liverpool conceded fewer big chances than Arsenal’s 4. Arsenal’s defense is also unluckiest – they should have conceded 2.6 goals fewer according expected goals conceded statistic.

Chris Smalling, 5.8m – wat, WOL, whu, NEW. Man United got their first clean sheet against Burnley and the increasing role of Marouane Fellaini may mean that United are at the beginning of a clean sheets run.

Patrick van Aanholt, 5.5m – hud, NEW, bou, WOL. The return of James Tomkins should boost the appeal of the Crystal Palace defence.

Nathan Ake, 5.0m – LEI, bur, CRY, wat. Bournemouth have only conceded 2 big chances in the first 4 GWs – joint best with Liverpool.

Conclusion

I selected 5 players who I consider as having a reasonable probability of outscoring Robertson in the next 4 GWs. All of them have both high clean sheet and attacking returns potential. Also, all should be secure of starts, except maybe for Chris Smalling; I do, however, think that he is the most secure in the Manchester United defence.

It will be interesting to see how this punt will turn out. I am currently not on a WC and I have Virgil van Dijk, who I will consider dropping after the Southampton game.

Did I miss any other good differentials?

Really nice work here. This is a great example of a successful Community Article: pick a relevant topic, do a quick analysis of the options, and provide us a great space to discuss it. More of these are welcomed from everyone!

I would be on the no-Robertson train if I was on my Wildcard, but since I'm not it's not a luxury I'll be indulging in. I think the fixtures are bad enough both in the PL and in other competitions that it's worth looking elsewhere

Not sure why you're on VVD if you're going to sell him though - plus I would still prefer Robertson over him. I wouldn't be picking any Liverpool if it was my WC.

Thanks again for this, nice job!

Robertson he will either play a game or not at all. So if you have a decent bench you don't need to drop him. In the games he will play we are looking on his attacking potential rather than his cs potential. I don't think is an easy decision to drop him.

I definitely agree it's not an easy decision but I think it's one that, after lots of thought, I'd go ahead with.

Luckily I don't have to decide because I'm not on my WC 😉

I agree that he'll either play or he won't but I suspect the best way forward is leaving him out for a few GWs and bringing him back; the tough bit is choosing which alternatives to go with

What is the basis for this claim? Full backs often get put on the field the last 5 to 10 minutes to shore things up and to make sure there is enough energy in that position, see f x Davies and Trippier.

On my wildcard, and the reason I just put him back in because the c£0.5m I'm saving wasn't really helping me much anywhere else.

That extra £0.5 is the difference between a Holjberg and a Neves, or a Lucas Moura and a Walcott (or similar.)

Feels like, long term, Robertson is a much smarter option, and has much much more value for that £0.5

A quick YES or NO is appreciated before I push the button:

    2FT 0.3ITB

    Patricio / Hart
    Robertson / Mendy / Luiz / SHAW / WanBissaka
    Salah / Mane / WALCOTT / Neves / CAIRNEY
    Arnie / Aguero / ZAHA

    Thoughts on: Shaw/Luiz > Alonso/Bennett

Would leave 3 flagged players: Walcott, Cairney, Zaha (Walcott/Zaha should play)

I thin Chilwell and Trippier are the ones that I could easily add to my article as very good alternatives. However, in case you go with Trippier you need to have strong bench, as he is not 100% nailed.

Like the article. If Shaw hadn't picked up a knock I'd have mentioned him and I think you've overlooked Laporte, who has a great run of fixtures and seems nailed.

Pereira classified as a defender, labeled as a midfielder, practically playing as a forward. He has been pushed back into defence at times, but that hasn’t stopped him enjoying 11 touches in the penalty box, eclipsing even the likes of Mendy (8) and Robertson (9).Even if the 24-year-old ends up being permanently stationed at right back for the Foxes, both of his assists have come while playing in defence, and the return of Jonny Evans bodes well for Leicester’s clean sheet prospects.

    Nice article.
I think we want him in our teams after the next 4 GWs, so for me it’s only really a question if on WC as a none owner previously.
If I didn’t own Robbo, I wouldn’t get him in for a FT before GW 9.
On a WC it would be 50/50 for me, as you would also save a transfer down the line. I do expect him to get 1-3 CS/assists in the next 4. For me I would guess that he would get 17 points (1 Cs + 1 assist + 8 appearance points + 2 bonus), so that’s 21 points with the transfer getting him in. Would I be confident in picking a replacement that would outscore 21 points? And would that replacement rise in value ?
As an owner not WC’ing he is a definitely hold for me. Given that I would need to use 2 FTs on losing him and Getting him back it’s not worth it imo.

Of course he could be benched for a game, but that could either be a blessing or a curse. Fairly unlikely he will be subbed in if not starting, so your replacement might get you points in that game as well.
For many it would mean fielding AWB/Wolves defender, which both have a decent chance of a good game in Robbo potential absence.

You missed the variable of relocating some of his money elsewhere.
So it's Chilwell needing 21 points ( Im not sure he'll score 17 and FTs aren't 4 points but I'll give you the benefit)
but now that's Mitrovic instead of Ings. Or Dilva instead of Bilva.
That million saved can earn you plenty on top of a 5m saving.

I didn’t miss it, but in my post I made the assumption that you would want Robbo back after the next 4 GWs. So by relocating the extra funds saved, you would need 2 FTs to get Robbo back.
Yes one of them might be for another transfer out you would make anyway, but it might not..
Agree that FTs aren’t always worth 4 points, but they should at least be worth something - and 4 points is just an easy “standard” instead of arguing whether it’s worth 2,7 or 3.4 points every time 🙂

Some players are genuine season keepers - disregarding WC or fixtures. RAM trinity are getting close to this at the moment - plus the value tied up argument.

I can see the logic for someone who doesnt own him yet hopes someone like a Tripp or other mentioned in the article match Robbo - but for owners since GW1 - he's one to keep imo

This article needs an Argument for Owning section to be taken seriously in my opinion. The replacements touted aren't even in a similar price range and Robertson being rested is pure speculation at this point.

I'd have like to have seen that too.

But having said that its a good small article to get the discussion going. I immediately read it and had views so job done definitely.

Up to those looking to keep Robertson to put forward their views I guess. Perhaps a call in the article asking for that to really hammer that home would be good.

For me I'm keeping - because he offers strong assist potential in an attacking team that can score against anyone.

But if I was to drop any of the big three at the back it would more likely to be him than Alonso or Mendy.

Good article. On WC and seriously considering dropping for Pereira due to the better fixtures. I looked at Maguire's stats and his set piece threat doesn't seem to be as good so far this season.

I'd like another price rise out of Robertson first though. Should also be the easiest out of the 3 (him, Mendy and Alonso) to bring back in if only losing £0.1m SV.

    1. Licious Lizard

Yep - but would happily use 2 FTs to get him back if I thought I needed to. He's a brilliant FPL player but I'm just curious if you could match his points by playing with the 5-5.5 defenders and going with who has the best fixtures.

Although he's still in my team as I type this.

  15. stat
      7 years, 4 months ago

I think he's worth getting rid of for the next 4 games.

Yes, he's picked up 2 assists so far, but lets not forget that a large part of his points have come from 3 clean sheets, whereas the point totals of Alonso and Mendy have been less reliant on clean sheets, and more on attacking returns.

Depending on how long Shaw is out for and whether I WC or not, I'll either get Doherty for this week and then start Shaw more or less every week, or if Shaw is out for a while I'll rotate Chilwell and Doherty.

That’s it! Don’t get me wrong robbo has served me well but people going on like he’s an attacking beast are seeing it with rose tinted glasses. He’s very attacking but has only actually scored one goal for Liverpool. And 2 assists in 4 is solid enough but his attacking output isn’t and imo, won’t be close to Mendy and Alonso.

I'm currently on a WC and still have Robertson, so having this discussion is great.

For me I have him for his attacking returns as opposed to Liverpool's clean sheet(s).no doubt I would want him back and would mean a waste of a transfer.

Saying that I think David Luiz should be included on the list.

David Luiz has nice cs potential, but how about Rudiger? Leading with 2 pts atm. Price differerence is not very important if plan is getting Robbo back with straight move. Lack of attacking potential problem with them? Azpi also might have scored one, but Morata was there...

That is still just speculation. Rose probably wants to leave in January so there may be some politics. And Davies played more than Trippier last year, but even though that is likely to change, it is not certain. They both run a lot and may need to be rested.

This is giving me a real headache. I've had Robertson since day 1 and returns have been great. I'm on WC now and I am tempted to drop, is it wrong?! I am tempted to make the following changes - let me know if you think it's a good move:

      Robertson to Pereira
      Mane to Moura
      Fraser to Silver

      Current team is:
      Hennessey (Foster)

      Mendy/Robertson/Alonso (Cook/Benett)

      Hazard/Mane/Pedro/Maddison (Fraser)

      Aguero/Wilson/Mitro

I would not go without both Mane and Salah. Liverpool tend to score well against top teams, and the feeling is that they are yet to hit top form. I also like Chilwell more than Pereira - better underlying stats except for penalty area touches. Also more nailed.

      Patricio- Foster

Alonso- Mendy- Bennett (cardiff)- Pereira- WB ( Last three in a 1:3 rotaton)

      Hazard- Mane- Maddison- Billing- ???

      Mitrovic- Aguero- Vardy/Wilson

I have 7.3 million for the last midfielder if i go for Vardy, and 10 if i go for Wilson.

Which choice would you go for?

I'm wildcarding this week and Salah is going nowhere. I watched the scout cast last night and I have to say, Az was talking absolute nonsence about Salah suggesting going without him and captaining Mane over Salah? Seriously!! As demonstrated by Jonty, Salah's underlying stats are right up there and given what he did last season, a glut of points will likely be coming regardless of fixtures. That in addition to Salah's ownership means going without him is a monumental risk Mane on the other hand is over performing and likely to regress. Az is normally pretty sensible but I couldn't disagree more with his assessment of Salah.

Anybody can convince themselves reasons to get rid of him and it’s such a small sample size so far this season
I hate having to use FTs on defenders unless it’s forced.
It will be interesting to see if he blanks vs Spurs, how many teams on WC jump ship or show some patience

He scored over 100pts last season from less than 2000 min. A full season is likely to result in 150+ points
