Scout Squad

The Scout Squad – FPL Gameweek 6

The Scout Squad panel return to offer their long-list of candidates to be considered for our regular Scout Picks selection on Friday.

The 72 nominations will be whittled down to a squad of 15 (with the starting XI not exceeding £83m and no club represented by more than three players) ahead of the Gameweek 6 deadline at 11:30 BST on Saturday.

Peter Kouwenberg – who has finishes of 289th, 129th and 138th to his name – and Scoutcast regulars/site contributors Az, Joe and Paul explain their noteworthy squad selections and omissions in the article below.

There was a degree of consensus among our panel this week, with seven players receiving unanimous support and a further ten assets being nominated by at least three of our esteemed experts.

Despite concerns about his output, Mohamed Salah is backed across the board by Paul, Joe, Az and Peter, along with form players such as Eden Hazard, Ryan Fraser, Marcos Alonso, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Andrew Robertson.

Crystal Palace and Leicester City players have been well-supported – particularly in defence and between the sticks – but there is not a single vote for Benjamin Mendy, with fitness concerns plaguing the Manchester City left-back.

Form dictates the vast majority of my squad, with Romelu Lukaku pushing for the premium forward role ahead of Sergio Aguero on the back of four goals in as many starts.

I’ve reluctantly overlooked Benjamin Mendy due to doubts over his fitness to face Cardiff. As a result, I’m a little wary that David Silva could be the only Manchester City player to claim a place in our Scout Picks XI as you’d expect them to deliver big hauls against Neil Warnock’s side.

Again, I’m turning to defence for the differentials.

Crystal Palace and Leicester City have standout home matches that offer strong alternatives for those looking beyond the obvious names.

Crucially, their visitors, Newcastle and Huddersfield, sit joint-bottom for attempts on goal, with 40 apiece.

They have scored just four and two goals respectively.

James Tomkins’ return to action was a big bonus for Palace last weekend at Huddersfield – they have two clean sheets in the three matches he’s started.

The centre-half is always a big threat in the opposition area and has netted three goals in back-to-back seasons. He will entertain a Magpies’ defence that have conceded more attempts from set-plays (22) than any other side this season.

Ben Chilwell has been overshadowed by fellow full-back Ricardo Pereira at Leicester. Managers have flocked to the Portuguese after his run of three assists in the first five Gameweeks.

Yet the underlying numbers remain in Chilwell’s favour. He has recorded at least double the number of shots (four to two) and crosses (31 to 15) than the summer signing.

Adding to his appeal, the England U21 star also earned two bonus points in Leicester’s only clean sheet of the season.

Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic is making a mockery of his £6.8m price tag this season with four goals and an assist in just five games and gets top billing among my striker options.

His home clash with Watford looks particularly enticing given he is top for headed goals (three) and the Hornets are among the seven worst sides in terms of conceding headers in the box.

Romelu Lukaku is another forward I’d like to see represented. With four goals and nine shots on target, only Mitrovic is shooting more accurately than the Manchester United man this season.

I back a three-strong frontline this time around and want to see Robert Firmino represented. With a goal in each of his last three run-outs in all competitions the Brazilian looks to be in menacing form ahead of Southampton’s visit. A double-up with his team-mate and Captain Poll leader Mohamed Salah is expensive but I think there are enough cheap options this week to accommodate both.

Chief among these budget enablers is Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has recorded an assist, two clean sheets and maximum bonus returns on two occasions. He hosts a Newcastle outfit with the joint-lowest number of shots (40), along with Huddersfield, this season.

Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser is another value option to help balance the books. The flying Scot racked up an incredible 18 FPL points last time out and squares up to a Burnley side that has shipped a record 103 shots this season.

Another forward I’ve put forward, more with the Spot the Differential articles in mind, is Olivier Giroud, who looks to have won over the Chelsea management and faces a West Ham outfit he has scored against on five occasions while at Arsenal.

A stressful week for my own team as I wrestle with the need for Eden Hazard versus the prospects of Mohamed Salah at home to Southampton. There are some tough calls as well for my Scout Picks.

I’ve tripled up on Liverpool: Andrew Robertson is a no-brainer due to his threat going forward and form, while Roberto Firmino gets a look-in as he played limited minutes at the weekend and during the week. I wrestled with who to go for out of Salah and Sadio Mane and in the end chose the Egyptian – but a lack of form, a Champions League fixture and added pressure to deliver does worry me with regards to the off-form midfielder.

This is why I’ve gone for Eden Hazard as my top pick this week, and realistically, I don’t know if I can stomach going without him as he goes up against West Ham on Sunday afternoon.

In defence, I’ve gone for Ederson in goal for Manchester City due to a lack of real security of starts for their other defenders. Marcos Alonso blanked for the first time last week, but I don’t think he’ll be out of the points for long with Chelsea’s current form.

I’m still smarting from Aaron Wan-Bissaka being rooted to my bench, but I’m definitely playing him against Newcastle at home, which in my mind is the most likely game of all to have a clean sheet for the home side. Palace have the immovable objects of James Tomkins and Mamadou Sakho back in the side, too.

In midfield – other than Hazard and the Liverpool assets – I really like the look of David Silva against Cardiff this week, after the Spaniard finally delivered on his promising underlying stats at the weekend. In contrast, James Maddison continues to get “lucky” and I’m going to ride that streak against a toothless Huddersfield. I think the time is nigh for him to score a “proper” goal.

It would also be silly to overlook Ryan Fraser against a Burnley side who are conceding an alarming amount of shots and goals.

It’s nice to have a dilemma with the forwards. I’m happy with the ones I have selected but did chop and change my rankings of them many times before settling on this order. Sergio Aguero‘s small injury was a bit of a worry but he looks to have shaken off his ankle knock after featuring in midweek.

I’ve gone for Aleksandar Mitrovic as my main pick as he will cause Watford a lot of trouble with the number of shots (especially headers) he has recorded – I would be amazed if he came away from that game without a goal.

Alexandre Lacazette and Callum Wilson are both in good form and have decent fixtures against Everton and Burnley, respectively: both of these sides are shipping goals for fun at the moment.

Peter said…

Will this be the week that managers who ditched their Liverpool assets come to regret their disloyalty? Possibly not, if Jurgen Klopp chooses to rest his star players on Saturday in the midst of a frenetic run of fixtures. Certainly not, if the likes of Eden Hazard (backed again this week) and Ryan Fraser were their replacements in Gameweek 5.

Nonetheless, a home fixture against a Saints team which has already conceded 13 big chances is too enticing for Andrew Robertson and Mohamed Salah, with the conflict between the Egyptian’s underlying statistics versus actual points return spookily familiar after Harry Kane burned me repeatedly last season.

Fulham, Burnley and West Ham are the only teams to have conceded more big chances than Southampton and I’ve chosen a midfielder from each of their opponents: Roberto Pereyra, Fraser and Hazard respectively. Pereyra’s place on the bottom rung of the ladder is attributable to the downturn in his statistics in the last couple of games.

On the flip side, Fulham’s somewhat gung-ho approach has led to 20 attempts for Aleksandar Mitrovic, second only to Sergio Aguero (25), who keeps his place albeit with an even bigger health-warning than usual about possible rotation.

Form, fixtures and value combine at Selhurst Park, although Wilfried Zaha may need extra strapping with visitors, Newcastle, guilty of more fouls this season than any other team. Aaron Wan-Bissaka saved many a Gameweek last time out and already has more bonus points (six) than any other defender bar Marcos Alonso.

It’s fair to say Crystal Palace have ridden their luck a little this season, outperforming the expected goals conceded (xGC) figure by more than any other team, but that can be set against Newcastle’s own dire expected goals (xG) figure, with only Huddersfield trailing the Magpies.

Arsenal are a puzzle. Ten goals in their last four games and yet no one player truly sets himself apart from the rest. Their visitors, Everton, made the Hammers look like world-beaters on Sunday and you would have to back the Gunners to continue their excellent form in front of goal against a Toffees side without a clean sheet to their name this season. I’ve gambled on Alexandre Lacazette this time out.

The Community Champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2018/19 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Last week’s champion, zophar, beat our Scout Picks 76-71 with a 3-4-3 line-up of McCarthy (0); Mendy (0), Doherty (12), Alonso (2); David Silva (11), Hazard (20), Pedro (2), Ozil (10); Aguero (7), Lacazette (5), Ings (7).

Eden Wizard’s Gameweek 2 victory over the Scout Squad crew by a score of 77-68 remains the deficit to beat.

We have also identical sides (same bench) and I'm having a real problem too. My logical thought is that I should ditch Peltier, but it feels like such a dull move. There is also a possibility that Cairney could be back.

I'm very tempted by Mane to Hazard.

    Bennet - WBA - Lindelöf - Holebas - Alonso
    Höjberg - Pogba - Mané - Hazard - Richarlison
    Aguero - Mitro - Lacazette

    Meet the Manager Call Out

Thanks for all the comments about yesterday's first Meet the Manager video with Triggerlips. Aiming to make this a regular series throughout the season.

If you think you'd made a good candidate please email me at:

    jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

    Requirements are:

A strong track record of success across a number of seasons
    A good mic and camera
    A good internet connection.

No need to nominate people here. I want to hear from people directly who are up for doing this as it saves time knowing that candidates are keen to take part.

Lots of high finishes...multiple top 10K, 5K, one or two top 1K sort of thing.

Strong track record of success basically.

There are lots who don't obsess about OR...but even those end up with a strong OR from time to time. If they are good it will be reflected in the career history.

But yes if a manager is particularly interesting. An astronaut doing FPL for eg. A footballer doing FPL then I'd certainly like to hear from them.

The ultimate for me would be interviewing someone live from a space station as they float around giving advice on making transfers from space.

Although would be a nightmare to be on the week after. Bit like when the Who had to go on after Jimi Hendrix at Monterey after he'd set light to his guitar and put in the best gig of the 60s. 🙂

Would love to see that - the tension of trying to do a wildcard before the space station loses contact with satellites, and goes into the dark for 12 hours.

World's best chess player Magnus Carlsen is a very active FPL player. When he played in a chess competition last year his father was asked how Magnus prepares between chess matches, replying "He is probably watching soccer".

He also does pretty well in FPL, with a top 3k finish last year. His history is decent but a very strong track record.

I can definitively see some interesting thoughts and questions. Lots of strategy in Chess. Can it be transferred to FPL?

Nice post - I used to play chess when I was a kid and I can definitely see some parallels between chess and FPL, especially in terms of strategic thinking and planning. Moreover, I am not surprised that chess players would be successful at FPL as they are intelligent people!

I understand the premise, however, as Triggerlips alluded to you have to take into account the volume of players and availability of information. I have only been playing 2 years but have finished in the top 0.5% on both occasions. Would love to give some quality banter and insight from a semi-professional player

I like this feature. My first reaction on tuning in was ageist but then that's somewhat understandable given the average age of YouTubers; I'm used to watching Muselk, Lachlan and Ali A. Andy and LetsTalkFPL is the closest I get to 40 😉

There were some nuggets in there if you were patient and gave it a chance, such as about team structure and chasing price rises early on, while generally remaining patient with players.

I'm wondering how we find those managers who have the best instincts but go too maverick? Ruining their rank because they take too many hits. I think some of those managers may have the best instincts in recognising short bandwagons with great fixtures - which is what we kinda need when site visitors are looking for tips for the next gameweek only.

This is a little “elitist” don’t we think? What about those that were part of this “community” for years but don’t always get a high rank?

My point being, David gets a regular slot on the scoutcast spouting simple stuff to everyone despite having below the specified finishes.

My point here being, I have no problem with David but the idea that guests have to have a “strong history” is a little hypocritical and you’re excluding a lot of people immediately.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 14 Years

I see what you're saying but the Scoutcast is meant to be entertainment. Do we really take what they say too seriously?

I think there's room for a weekly article with an 'expert' manager with a proven track record. It just might end up a little dry.

Should say, I really enjoyed the Triggerlips one, he's not how I expected at all (haven't got round to listening to his pod yet so I had zero idea what he even sounded like)

Have also been enjoying the other bite size videos like the breakfast club, etc.

Going completely against the point of the short, snappy content but I'd love to see at least one attempt to live stream you and some other FPL managers watching the 3pm kick offs and reacting to the highs and lows. Preferably whilst ribbing each other mercilessly. If it went well then doing this on the last day of the season would be amazing fun 🙂

The list of worthwhile nominees has shrunk dramatically over the last couple of years, of regular posters I'd like to see on SC would be
Bouncebackability - 9 sub 10k finishes in 12 seasons including an 64 OR and highest bad year of 59k.
Numb - His history & HoF is well documented on here.
RCA - Combo of good history & would be good to hear the blaggard live 😉
Optimus - A good craic and the perfect face for radio 😆
Others that would have been great are Spectrum, Shipstontrev and even a swansong from Evs.
There are other honourable mentions I've missed but these are all good guys with long proven track records and FFS history - we've seen enough 'here today gone tomorrow' self publicists on here without giving them airtme imo.

      Hi Jonty,
I am new to the website and community but been an anorak of the game for a while.

My history is not as strong as the elite elite but have a look and see what you think.
      https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/entry/292269/history

I record my own sports podcast for a radio station and include a fantasy football section discussing similar ideas as you guys on the Scoutcast but i do see things differently.

Keep up the great work and long may the community grow.

    Morning,

I am looking for the article about the strong and weak fixtures. It was always called 'Frisking the Fixtures' but I can't find that. Anyone with that link please?

Didnt we always use to slap down those who wanted know a poster's OR before taking advice?. Dunno why rank history has now become a must for credibility

You right but good OR several times means the manager knows what he is doing and his advices are more welcome.

Play Richarlison or AWB this week?
Also playing PVA so would be doubling up.

I'd go Rich; Arsenal are always likely to concede and you haven't all your eggs in one basket then hoping for Palace clean sheet.

Can I have a little check up on this? Getting punished by the price rises this week.

    Patricio
    Mendy* Robertson Alonso AWB
    Salah Mane Maddison Pogba
    Arnie* Kun
    Hamer - Stephens - Ings - Peltier 0.1itb 1ft

    Do I...
    A. Wildcard (assuming a few injuries)
    B. Salah and Stephens to Fraser and Haz (-4).
    C. Pogba and Ings to Fraser/Rich and Mitro (-4)
    D. Arnie to Mitro.
    E. Other.

Obviously Mendy could fund something. Caught between risking nothing and taking hits basically.

Save the ft. Apart from Mendy it seems likely you'll get mins from your first 11. Got the impression arnie injury not so serious. Plus, Fraser punished the sellers (inc me) after no concrete info on injury, Mendy could still play and return this week too.

Anyone have any instinctive calls that go against the stats this week.

Based on very little save Liverpool's exploits in the CL in the week, I think Saints will somehow make life very difficult for Liverpool and score at Anfield. I only have 2 Liverpool assets and am kinda glad it isn't 3

don't need people to explain to me statistical low probability. I'm interested in some hunches to lively up the dry statistical churning

don´t need dry statistic to predict Liverpool to get a cleanie vs Southampton, watching Liverpool is enough. PSG needed an offside goal and a horrible sideway pass from salah to score vs Liverpool. Not sure if Redmond would have scored in that situation, and referees usually spot those kind of offsides. Other than that PSG had, erm, one big chance? Draxler shot blocked and if we are very nice, Mbappe had a shot in the first half too. And that was PSG, creating nothing with the likes of di Maria, Neymar, Mbappe and Cavani. And the first four games vs opponents of Saints calibre, the only goal conceded was from a Alisson howler. There is always a possibility that Saints score, that´s the beaty of this game, but with the way Liverpool plays and Saints play seems unlikely.

Concerned about CL affect. Playing the saints on sat at anfield is a big come down for both fans and players after PSG.

Then again, can overthink these things, Liverpool at home will still run the game.

Left with a 4-5-1 this week. But is that the correct decision?

    Ryan
    Robbo, Mendy, Alonso, AWB
    Salah, Haz, Moura, Rich, Fraser
    Kun

    Button, Jimenez, Doherty, Kamara

    1FT + 0.6m

With that squad I'd say that is your best 11 this week so yes right decision.
