Phil Ampleford’s stellar run of six straight top 10,000 finishes, including two inside the top 1,000, was brought to a sudden end in 2017/18 when he finished 95,198th in the overall rankings.

Undaunted, he reflected on mistakes made that year and is back on track in style in the current campaign, nestled inside the top 3,000.

In our second Meet the Manager interview, Phil chats to Joe about the strategies that have earned him so many high finishes.

He also reveals what went wrong last season and how he has learned from mistakes made.

In addition, he finds time to look in-depth at his current successful squad and offer advice to other Fantasy managers about how to do well in 2018/19.

A flexible approach and close attention to defender selection, both expensive and cheap, looks key to success this time around as Phil aims to bounce back from last year’s disappointment.

The chat with Phil is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

The first Meet the Manager video, featuring Nick (aka Triggerlips) can be viewed here.

Yep, looking to offload. He didn't pass the eye test against Soton. Looking to take a punt on a City or Spurs mid instead for next three games.

You came across really well imo. What was really nice was gaining such an insight from a top manager as to how people play when things don't go too well. Never really thought about flexibility and how to adapt etc. in fact after watching that I can see how I've been sleep walking through this game the past 3 seasons 😆

New article so last RP for hope of a response or 2

What to do here lads? I have the fear re Haz and Rich (and maybe Kane) and feel some hits may be justified:

    £0.6itb, on -4 already
    Fab
    Alonso, Robbo, Doherty, PVA
    Salah, Mané*, Fraser
    Aguero (C), Wilson, Mitro

    (Foster) (Pedro*, AWB, Hughes)

I still have WC and thinking of playing it in GW9 so taking out players now not as serious potentially

    A) Pedro > Rich/ Madd (-4)
    B) Mané > Rich/ Madd (-4)
    C) Mané, PVA > Hazard, Duffy/ Boly (-8)
    D) Mané, Pedro > Haz, up to 6.0 mid (-8)
    E) Salah, Pedro > Haz, Rich/ Dilva/ Madd.etc
    F) Salah, Wilson > Rich, Kane
    G) Hold and suck up the fear of not owning Haz, Rich, Madd, Tripp etc etc

    Sorry for long post!

The choices I have are that or I could do Mendy and Moutinho to Chilwell and Richarlison for a hit.
I believe I'm better off with the latter tbh...

        1. Philman
          • 16 Years

I think it's great that there is a real decision to be made by many here, and it's really hard to know what's for the best. I am certainly considering the Kane move, which will leave me with no Pool assets, but I am lucky that I could WC them back in my team in a couple of GWs time.

See now there's the difference, you as will many others still have your Wildcard intact. Mine however is long gone so my thinking is going to be slightly different. Another thing is I want to get rid of Mendy so the Salah and Wilson move to get Kane and Richarlison would still leave an injured Mendy in my team so another reason I'm a bit loathed to do it...

            1. Philman
              • 16 Years
              7 years, 2 months ago

Yeah, with the WC gone, such a major move comes with bigger risks, and with the jury out as to whether Salah out Kane in is actually a good move, concentrating on your high priced injured players may be better advised. The issue with Mendy out is who comes in. The choices don't seem so great as they did in GW1, unless you downgrade to release funds.

Mendy and Moutinho to Chilwell and Richarlison for a hit I've settled on just waiting as late as possible before I press that button.
Like yourself, I too just think those Leicester fixtures are FPL gold I just can't let that run go 🙂

I’m pondering the Kane move, which would be for a hit, but I don’t have any other issues to address. My WC is gone so my Salah plan is 2FTs in GW9 and a prayer that nothing bad happens over the international break.

I’m looking forward to viewing the Podcast.

He is flavour of the week considering he is the most transferred in player so far. A lot of people on here have been talking about bringing in Maddison last gw and this gw. I was enquiringly about Mahrez not saying he was flavour of the week.

Salah to rich wasn’t an easy decision, but it was part of a two move which involved Wilson to Kane (c).

I’d find Mané to rich easier than Salah to rich for sure.

I’m not writing us off. I think the players are starting to click with Pellegrini now. The 8:0 win last night may have been against an easy opposition but its only going to add some much needed confidence.

How many of you think going Aguero > Kane (C) on a WC will pay off?

Aguero's next 6 aren't amazing. Even Brighton shouldn't let in more than 4 goals, and Sterling / Sane should be in on some of that. I see both strikers as having a similar ceiling. But then Kane has Cardiff at home.

      Considering this atm:

      Patricio / Fabianski
Alonso Doherty Trippier / TAA WB
Hazard Son Richarlison Kenedy / Maddison
      Kane(C) Lacazette Mitrovic

Am I going to hit gold, or am I heading for disaster?

City have Brighton and Burnley at home in their next three fixtures. You really want to avoid completely for a Spurs double up in attack?

Plan to change Kane and Son to Arnautovic and Salah after Hud and Cardiff.
Burnley seem to be finding their resilience again.

Follow your gut. If you feel Spurs assets are better than City's in the next 3, go for it. I just don't feel they are playing well enough to warrant a triple up. Good luck. I like the Son pick.

I agree they aren't, it's just that Cardiff and Hudersfield are horrible. Perfect time for Spurs to rebound and Kane to find his form I think.

              High risk, hopefully high reward.

Please help me find a good combo (max 2) of subs to take 2 of the following out: David Silva, Moura and Mendy.

      0.3 in the bank

      Cheers all mates

Moura and Silva have very good fixtures this week. Could hurt you if they play.

True. But not confident at all they’ll start. I already thought of taking both out and bring Bernardo and Son in lol

But bernando and son have equal risk of rotation as compared to moura and Silva.

True, true. Ultimately it is a game of probabilities, and both Son and Bernardo seem, for this GW in particular, being better positionned to start and maybe haul

@Philman as you are online giving advice your thoughts would be appreciated. What are your thoughts on Mahrez? Still too early to jump on with 3goals in 2games? Is the city midfield too much of a minefield and we should just avoid ? Have a solid bench to cover rotation.

Well, we all thought Dilva was as nailed a City midfield asset as there could be. Also, Mahrez does tend to come on for some minutes, making the solid bench irrelevant. He has had minutes every GW. It's hard to make a case for him with so many other good midfield assets available.

Hi Phil. Thank you for your insights.

And Dilva, what is your opinion on him? I currently have him and I am honestly clueless on what to do - keep or sell. You think he may start?

With City mids, I think it is worth looking at points per game rather than points per mins. We know they will get rotated, and if they don’t start, they will likely come on as a sub....as such we need to determine whether occasional rotation is worthwhile

Bernardo being the cheapest of them and having some decent attacking points may be better than Dilva. But taking Dilva out for a 4 hit can hurt me a lot

I am keeping, but I am a little worried he won't start. However, after a complete rest at the weekend, 60 mins yesterday, and then another rest seems unlikely? It's hard to second guess, so it's hard to call, but I feel I would highly regret getting rid if he did start and haul. I am tempted to sell in GW8 for a punt if I decide to WC in GW9.

Thank you Phil! I really hope he returns some points.

Relatively to Mendy and Moura, any thoughts? I am thinking of taking both out and bring Richarlison and Walker in for this GW.

Would that be a good move?

Thank you for your analysis. Appreciate it

I would wait on Mendy news. Rich certainly seems like an understandably popular move this week, although Moura could do well in the next couple of weeks. I would also look at the cheaper defenders on offer at Wolves and Newcastle, or Trippier if Aurier is injured.

And with those fixtures, Trippier is in fact a good alternative. Considering both subs, I would be settled with the following for GW7:

                  Patricio
                  Alonso, Robertson, Trippier
                  Mane, Hazard, Rich, Maddison, Dilva
                  Kun, Wilson

                  Hamer, Bissaka, Holebas, Kamara

Thank you for the helpful insights Phil!

I understand Kane on his day is in the top few players in this game.

But are people looking to get him in just for the easier fixtures whilst Salah plays Chelsea and City?

Spurs have hardly been in great form, neither has Kane....

      Interested to hear people’s logic

Perfect time for him to find his form. Started looking sharp at the end of the Brighton game. Even he said it himself.

I see no reason why Liverpool vs City/Chelsea shouldn't both end up in goal fests....defenders may be a problem though.

Kane is one of the best strikers in the world who has been playing kak...but normal service will resume again soon...you can be sure of that.

...but you probably already know all that...

They do indeed...but that doesn't mean Chelsea and City won't score against them.

Probably ..but both games easily capable of a couple of more goals.

What i'm saying is that from an attacking point of view I see no problem with having attacking FPL players from any of those teams.

Kane will be a good pick but Liverpool, City and Chelsea will score goals despite the tough fixtures against each other. They're attacking teams who play for goals.

          Patricio
          Bellerin Shaw Alonso
          Fraser Silva Hazard Sane
          Jimenez Aguero Aubameyang
          (Hen Bennett AWB Schneid)

          1 FT, 0.3 ITB

          A) Save FT
          B) Silva > Richarlison (funds Kane next week)
          C) B plus Aub > Kane -4 now (allows a clean slate to save next week, which allows taking 2 FT into International break by saving next week)

Silva and Aub both have tasty fixtures but Rich is long term and Kane next week is a must for me. Really confused.

          Front 7:

          Salah Hazard Fraser Richarlison
          Aguero King Mitro

          a) save transfer
          b) King > Ings (kind of lateral)
          c) Salah and King > Maddison/Bilva and Lacazette

So the plan is to do Mane > Rich with my FT this week and start this team:

          Patricio
          Robbo Alonso Doherty
          Salah Bilva Rich Fraser
          Kun Mitro Zaha

          Foster AWB Neves Peltier

This will give me enough in the bank to do Bilva > Hazard next week.
I think Rich will outscore Mane this week.

Sounds good or am I missing anything? Thanks!

I wasn't too hopeful, but given they'll play a 4231 with two of Lucas/Son/Lamela/Alli either side of Eriksen behind Kane, I actually reckon he could/should start.

Hey guys. Not happy with my team for this coming gw. I've done Mendy -> Trippier.
Should I take any hits? Still got my wildcard but I don't want to use it just yet.

          Patricio
          Doherty Robbo Trippier Alonso

Dare I mention 😯 Ozil as an option with Arsenal hitting form and decent fixtures? Or is Ramsey a better option for a mill cheaper.
