Our Differentials have a distinctly retro feel this week. All three are on the wrong side of thirty but with the added motivation of a new contract to play for or a new manager to impress, each is currently going through a purple patch of form that’s brought them to the attention of the Scout Selection Committee..

We’re going through a bit of a revival of our own recently and, after last week’s Differentials almost outscored my entire FPL team, we’re hoping for another bumper return from this week’s picks.

Tomas Rosicky

Arsenal’s Renaissance man Tomas Rosicky epitomises the recent upturn in his club’s fortunes; after spending 20 months out with a tendon problem, it was feared that Rosicky would never return to the same level of old but the Czech schemer has been back to his glorious best in recent games. Despite managing just 15 starts all season, he has begun the last seven in a row and played a pivotal role in victories over Spurs, Liverpool and Milan. With another crucial game against Newcastle up next, Arsene Wenger will be looking to the 31 year old to produce another strong performance to ensure the Gunners’ momentum remains unchecked.

With Arsenal seemingly scoring at will at the moment, choosing another attacking option in addition to their imperial front man looks like a smart ploy. This week’s Scout Pick Theo Walcott is probably the best option available but priced at 8.9, the fleet footed winger will be beyond the budget of most Fantasy managers. The other main contender, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, offers plenty of potential but has the likes of Gervinho and Yossi Benayoun as rivals for the left flank role. Rosicky’s place looks a lot more secure, on the other hand and, with two goals in his last three games, still offers a decent attacking threat for the budget price of just 5.7.

Bobby Zamora

QPR are starting to look a much improved side of late there are plenty of decent differential options in their ranks; Adel Taraabt tops the ICT index for midfielders in recent weeks, Akos Buszaky looked a constant threat against Everton last time out and Djibril Cisse also returns from suspension this weekend. Despite the strong alternatives, we’ve opted for new January signing Bobby Zamora, after another excellent performance last weekend saw the ex-Fulham star score and pick up the maximum bonus to add to his already impressive record in recent weeks.

Last week’s haul takes his recent tally to 4 goals, 3 assists and 8 bonus points in his last seven games for an average of 6.7 points per game – to add a little perspective, that’s more than Emmanuel Adebayor, Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero have managed over the same period, making a mockery of his 6.7 valuation in the FPL game. Granted, 17 of those points came against Newcastle while playing for Fulham, but QPR look more than capable of finding the net and his move across London hasn’t slowed him down. Zamora’s strong hold up play is the perfect foil for a side bursting with pace and creativity in Cisse, Shaun Wright Philips and Taraabt, and he looks good to provide a steady stream of goals and assists over the coming weeks, despite the relatively difficult fixtures coming up.

Carlos Cuellar

With Vincent Kompany expected to miss Man City’s next couple of games, the masses will no doubt be looking at Liverpool’s double gameweek when considering a possible replacement. Before diving in, however, it would be well worth checking out Aston Villa’s defensive options. With Richard Dunne out of action for at least another month, Carlos Cuellar looks set for a continued run of starts at centre half alongside James Collins and, while both defenders have picked up bonus points in their last two games, the Spaniard has scooped the maximum in both matches as well as an assist, and looks by far the better value of the two, at 4.9 in the FPL game.

From a defensive perspective, Villa’s next two fixtures look as good as they come; in stark contrast to their free scoring home form, Fulham have managed just eight goals on their travels all season, and Bolton have only found the net once in their last five. All the signs points to a profitable period for Villa defenders and with ownership of just 0.1%, Cuellar would be a great differential.

I like Surman - have no problem with that choice. Just think you could have better defensive options with a view to the next 4-6 gameweeks if you let him go. As a differential, sure but am not sure it's a worthwhile one.

    Driving me crazy this.

Suarez seems to want me to bring him in for Ba but take another 4-pt hit for it.

Kompany > Sktrel for 4-pt hit should be fine in that a clean sheet is possible and just getting 4 points through the 2 * 60 mins played would cover it, with good fixtures following.

    Argh.

Kompany to Skrtel seems like an easy choice, the double appearance points pay your hit off immediately - any clean sheets are a bonus.

Not sure about a hit for Ba to Suarez though..

Yeah - I was pretty lucky with the Kompany transfer really - could end up paying off well.

Ba to Suarez is what I'm worried about - it's only really due to the fact it's a DGW.

Suarez is obviously a class player but has failed to collect goals and points whereas Ba has, admittedly not much as of late but he's still a great player.

I should probably stick with Ba really - just tough to ignore the DGW and the fact people chasing me in ML may be taking the Suarez risk which could pay off for them :/

Did it the other day and lost 0.1 - not bad at all and easily recoverable through Skrtel rising in price.

Kompany is brilliant no doubt, just with the DGW, swapping him out for a Liverpool defender I should make the points back from the hit from game time alone.

Suarez seems too much of a risk for me to captain - guess that answers the question itself too - I'm probably thinking too much about the DGW and Ba has got far more points so far.

Ye im unsure cos id lose .4 and would struggle to get him back in. Im gamblin on suarez cpt myself. If not stick with ba. Might get rid of scholes actually to make room for kompany back in in 1 transfer. I have same worry about double gameweek but suarez has looked lively and unlucky not to score more recently

Ahh if the rest of your defence is strong, then keeping him in isn't a terrible idea - he'll likely rise again once he's back and City should keep some clean sheets.

Suarez has definitely looked lively, he's a fantastically skilled player but it's just he's not been getting the goals.

Would expect he'd make an impact in 180 minutes of total play, just think it may be too much of a risk for me.

Kept vince and binned cahill for skrtl and swapped scholes for the mighty shane ferguson. Agree that rvp is the safer option for capt and a 4 point hit and poor performance from suarez would be tough to take. Your probably best sticking.

Think I will opt for keeping Ba, watched the match and he could well have scored - it was a feisty derby match too so I think that adds to the equation.

Obviously Arsenal are no pushovers but Ba could well get a goal there, possibly more than Suarez does in a potential 180 minutes.

How has it come that you have to pick between them!? They would automatically play for me. Ba just edges it for me, think newcastle-arsenal is gonna be a goal fest.

Just two questions left on my lineup:

    1. Pienaar @Liverpool or Siggy home vs City

    2. Vice-captain: Ba @Arsenal, Pog @Villa, Dempsey @Villa, Silva @Swansea, Bale @Everton, or Skrtel DGW

    (RVP captain)

Sure. Unless you really want to keep Kompany and have enough depth to ride out a couple weeks. Both Evans and Enrique should be good for the remainder.

Wow, 7 minutes and no response? What pieces of shite we all are. No I didn't bring in Drenthe. Had him twice earlier on all his promise and he failed to deliver. Moyes talking about playing him more. Now you know as much as anybody else does. Reasonable shot at a differential, but Everton not putting many balls in goal and have two tough opponents. May just end up doubling up on points for minutes played. Helpful?

Yes thanks. I rarely ask questions here and I respond whenever I feel I can help. Am tired of getting no responses whenever I do ask a question and I've also had a really crap week. hence the petulant outburst

Sorry to hear. Hope next week is better. Have a great weekend and good luck. FWIW, it's fairly random whether questions get answered or not. When it's really busy and everyone else is asking also, you don't get as much help, maybe one answer. Two if you are lucky. Also, if you can time them so they are near the top of a page of comments you may be a bit luckier. More thoughtful responses the later it gets, it seems. The nightowls are more contemplative sorts.

Right I know we have all had the Rooney Suarez RVP head melter for the armband over the last few days but will someone please convince me one way? Im losing by about 20-60 points in any leagues that matter to me coming 2nd or 3rd in all of them so should I be going for the gamble in Suarez even though he is...well lets face he cant seem to score or do i go with the Safe RVP which i Imagine all my rivals will go for?

    ps im a geordie so....

Suarez has never returned a 2figure haul, so you can ignore him as a captaincy option. plus, WBA are in great form so you can semi-ignore rooney. and newcastle are letting in goals in plenty of goals every away fixture. captain rvp.

    RVP, Ba, Rooney

Worth doing 4 points hit for Ba to Suarez? Only leading by ML by 15points.
