Our Differentials have a distinctly retro feel this week. All three are on the wrong side of thirty but with the added motivation of a new contract to play for or a new manager to impress, each is currently going through a purple patch of form that’s brought them to the attention of the Scout Selection Committee..

We’re going through a bit of a revival of our own recently and, after last week’s Differentials almost outscored my entire FPL team, we’re hoping for another bumper return from this week’s picks.

Tomas Rosicky

Arsenal’s Renaissance man Tomas Rosicky epitomises the recent upturn in his club’s fortunes; after spending 20 months out with a tendon problem, it was feared that Rosicky would never return to the same level of old but the Czech schemer has been back to his glorious best in recent games. Despite managing just 15 starts all season, he has begun the last seven in a row and played a pivotal role in victories over Spurs, Liverpool and Milan. With another crucial game against Newcastle up next, Arsene Wenger will be looking to the 31 year old to produce another strong performance to ensure the Gunners’ momentum remains unchecked.

With Arsenal seemingly scoring at will at the moment, choosing another attacking option in addition to their imperial front man looks like a smart ploy. This week’s Scout Pick Theo Walcott is probably the best option available but priced at 8.9, the fleet footed winger will be beyond the budget of most Fantasy managers. The other main contender, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, offers plenty of potential but has the likes of Gervinho and Yossi Benayoun as rivals for the left flank role. Rosicky’s place looks a lot more secure, on the other hand and, with two goals in his last three games, still offers a decent attacking threat for the budget price of just 5.7.

Bobby Zamora

QPR are starting to look a much improved side of late there are plenty of decent differential options in their ranks; Adel Taraabt tops the ICT index for midfielders in recent weeks, Akos Buszaky looked a constant threat against Everton last time out and Djibril Cisse also returns from suspension this weekend. Despite the strong alternatives, we’ve opted for new January signing Bobby Zamora, after another excellent performance last weekend saw the ex-Fulham star score and pick up the maximum bonus to add to his already impressive record in recent weeks.

Last week’s haul takes his recent tally to 4 goals, 3 assists and 8 bonus points in his last seven games for an average of 6.7 points per game – to add a little perspective, that’s more than Emmanuel Adebayor, Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero have managed over the same period, making a mockery of his 6.7 valuation in the FPL game. Granted, 17 of those points came against Newcastle while playing for Fulham, but QPR look more than capable of finding the net and his move across London hasn’t slowed him down. Zamora’s strong hold up play is the perfect foil for a side bursting with pace and creativity in Cisse, Shaun Wright Philips and Taraabt, and he looks good to provide a steady stream of goals and assists over the coming weeks, despite the relatively difficult fixtures coming up.

Carlos Cuellar

With Vincent Kompany expected to miss Man City’s next couple of games, the masses will no doubt be looking at Liverpool’s double gameweek when considering a possible replacement. Before diving in, however, it would be well worth checking out Aston Villa’s defensive options. With Richard Dunne out of action for at least another month, Carlos Cuellar looks set for a continued run of starts at centre half alongside James Collins and, while both defenders have picked up bonus points in their last two games, the Spaniard has scooped the maximum in both matches as well as an assist, and looks by far the better value of the two, at 4.9 in the FPL game.

From a defensive perspective, Villa’s next two fixtures look as good as they come; in stark contrast to their free scoring home form, Fulham have managed just eight goals on their travels all season, and Bolton have only found the net once in their last five. All the signs points to a profitable period for Villa defenders and with ownership of just 0.1%, Cuellar would be a great differential.

I've gone for 2 and 3 on the premise that I will want Siggy from GW30 onwards and I don't want to be wasting transfers on cheap midfielders. IMO:

      1) Looks like one for the future - done nothing in the 3 games played so far and playing for a poor team. Could also be rotated.
      2) As you mentioned below - great value for a high scoring team, and he appears the most nailed on in the NOR midfield. Excellent short term fixtures.
      3) Probably the best player of the 5. Tough short term but very good mid term fixtures.
      4) Good value also but SUN fixtures aren't the best and I think they'll struggle offensively without Sess. Fixtures get really horrible when he's back.
      5) Perhaps worth a punt for the DGW, but likely you'll want rid straight afterwards. Rotation is big enough for me to avoid.

A while back I posted this:

Time for a big ol’ ‘who’ question: WHO TO PLAY – Ba or Dempsey? You tell me. I’m a retard.

A bunch of kind souls replied asking who else I was playing, but unfortunately I spaced-out, and my reply got lost in the ever-changing world of the web.

Here's my mid and fwd line:

    Siggy, Yaya, Bale, Nani
    RVP, Suarez

Just got the one spot left for either Ba or Dempsey. What say you?

Yeah think so. Normally I'd play Migs, but I'm probably gonna captain Suarez so Migs kinda restricts my possible score. Neither likely to keep a cleanie, but Bolton do occasionally perform at home (0-0 with Arsenal comes to mind)

easy- only the top 5 have scoed more than us, cheap, form is good which is the best way to avoid lamberts rotation, 3 prime home fixtures coming up and the 2 away ones inbetween are not bad. a very solid 5th mid until about gw 32 then def not. for 4.4 two double digit scores all season is a decent effort. also lambert recently has been giving him an attacking role- as said in the stats article he has also recently had much more shots, crosses and general creativity than pilks recently to me that wildcard team is ready to go- now in exchange some advice on my polll above please not too much to ask

I'm chasing a quite a bit of a lead in a mini league and I need advice. My current team is

    Krul, Mignolet
Richards, Evans, Shotton, Simpson, S Kelly (Fulham)
    Buzsaky, Silva, Dempsey, Bale, Sess
    Aguero, RVP, Cisse (Newcastle)

Thinking of getting rid of Man City players since everybody has them and doing
Richards, Silva, Aguero out and Enrique, Walcott, Rooney in for a -8 point hit.

Reasoning behind this is that nearly everyone has someone of those City guys and they do have some hard fixtures coming up. Is this a sound reasoning or should I consider doing something else?

If RVP outscores Rooney this weekend I'll eat my own Dick - bookmark that if you will.

Newcastle will exploit Arsenal's dejection and bugger them senseless in London; Ba will score.

Manchester United - with their Europa League hinderance behind them - will roger West Brom (think about it, West Brom!!) into oblivion at Old Trafford.

    Chief benefactor = Wayne Rooney.

Shotton would be a better option and 4.9 isnt cheap for a sub par player

              McAuley Caulker Ward

and 4.9 you could get O shea for 5

Same dilemma myself. Yaya if you dont have Silva could be decent. Drenthe if you can deal with shipping him out after DGW if it's a fail. Etherington, Jarvis and Surman( very good cheapie option)

And I assume your plan will be to ship out one of the Liverpool defenders after the round? If I had the extra cash I would consider Suarez as a punt for the round. Your team is worth about 0.8m more than mine.

right the plan was to leave both liverpool defenders in until after qpr and wigan, then get bae for skrtel as spurs rotate well with liverpool. money to spend is no issue as have 0.6m spare, want to avoid stoke as awful fixtures so may go mcauley-caulker, but dont like the fact this would mean dropping simpson, who i have at the cheap price of 4.3

I got Simpson at 4.0, so don't really want to get rid of him. Probably similar situation with Vorm for me (bought at 4.4).

Hi lads. One final RMT please.

    Reina, Mignolet
    Skrtel, Evans, Senderos, Simpson, Caulker
    Bale, Silva, Dempsey, Sigurdsson, Surman
    RVP, Roo, Suarez

    Thanks.

reina is 6.4 senderos is 4.5
schwarzer is 4.8 and rotates well with mignolet until the end of the season and enrique is 5.8. so getting the later combination like i am doing saves you 0.2m and skrtel and enrique could get big dgw points bigger potential than riena for me as they can score/assist too. Also currently in your defence you have man u, liverpool and swansea rotating with newcastle and fulham. as most only play 3 defenders this does not sit well on the weeks newcastle and fulham are at home and you will have to leave a liverpool or united defender benched.
meanwhile if you go swarhzer/enriwue keeper situation is sorted. Meanwhile you can play both liverpool defenders this week, and in the next 2 games thereater as good fixtures qpr and wigan, THEN go skrtel to bae as they are currently the same price- as BAE has different timed home games this will give your defensive rotation more balance, and spurs defence with the fixtures is a season keeper.

Should I take a 4 pt hit and ship Kompany out for Skrtel?

I've got the following back 4 at the moment:

    Kompany, Enrique, Evans, Simpson, Kelly.

I've also got Valencia injured on the bench (keeping him for the run in).

I did that trade - but on a WC. Since Kompany is out (supposedly) for a couple of weeks, it seems a decent trade for a hit.
