Our second set of Scout Notes of the day rounds up the remaining international fixtures from Thursday night and Friday morning, with our focus on Fantasy Premier League assets.

Aleksandar Mitrovic was back on the scoresheet for Serbia, while Bernardo Silva scored a fine individual effort for Portugal in their win over Poland.

Raul Jimenez was also on target – and there could be good news regarding his return date from international duty with Mexico ahead of Gameweek 9.

Andrew Robertson struggled at wing-back for Scotland, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka was omitted from the England under-21s’ match-day squad.

We round up the goals, assists and minutes played of the FPL assets on show for their respective countries.

Montenegro 0-2 Serbia

  • Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.9m) – 90 minutes

Aleksandar Mitrovic suffered a price drop in FPL this week after successive blanks in the league, but with Cardiff City, Bournemouth and Huddersfield Town next up for Fulham, the Serbian striker delivered a warning to his knee-jerking sellers by scoring a brace in his country’s 2-0 win over Montenegro.

The first meeting between the former Yugoslav republics was a scrappy affair separated by Mitrovic’s two strikes, the first a confidently dispatched spot-kick on 18 minutes and the second a tap-in after an excellent dummy by Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The former Newcastle United striker also had another three attempts on goal, all of which were blocked.

Serbia were missing the services of Nemanja Matic (£5.0m), who withdrew from his country’s squad earlier this week after picking up an unspecified injury.

Manchester United said it “remains to be seen” if the defensive midfielder will be fit to face Chelsea a week on Saturday.

The Reds’ boss, Jose Mourinho, was present in Podgorica for this UEFA Nations League encounter, with reports in the press recently linking him with both Milinkovic-Savic and defender Nikola Milenkovic.

Poland 2-3 Portugal

  • Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Jan Bednarek (£3.9m) – 90 minutes
  • Rui Patricio (£4.6m) – 90 minutes
  • Ruben Neves (£5.1m) – 90 minutes
  • Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) – 90 minutes
  • Cedric Soares (£4.4m) – 0 minutes
  • Helder Costa (£4.9m) – 0 minutes

There were five FPL players on show in Chorzow as a Cristiano Ronaldo-less Portugal side edged out their hosts in a five-goal encounter.

Two of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Portuguese contingent played the full 90 minutes, with a third – Helder Costa – an unused substitute.

There wasn’t to be another clean sheet for Rui Patricio, who was beaten by two of the three attempts on target he faced. The Wolves custodian, who has been excellent this season, was perhaps partly culpable for Poland’s opening goal, being caught underneath a corner-kick delivery that Krzysztof Piatek nodded in. There was, however, a slight question over Patricio being impeded in his efforts to claim the cross.

Neves was his usual deep-lying self, seeing a late effort from outside the box fly wide and delivering a fantastic ball from inside his own half onto the feet of Rafa Silva for Portugal’s second goal – the ball ultimately being turned into his own net by Kamil Glik.

Bernardo Silva scored what turned out to be tie’s winning goal on 52 minutes, collecting the ball and dribbling into space to fire a shot through the fingers of Lukasz Fabianski, who ought to have done better with the Manchester City midfielder’s otherwise splendid individual effort.

Bernardo played on the left of a front three in Fernando Santos’s 4-3-3.

Fabianski, who has made the joint-most number of saves in FPL this season, at least carried on where he left off for the Hammers in making five other stops on Thursday evening.

Jan Bednarek, now in the cluster of defenders available for £3.9m in FPL, played the full game at the heart of the Polish defence. His club colleague, Cedric Soares, was left on the Portugal bench.

Israel 2-1 Scotland

  • Beram Kayal (£4.4m) – 82 minutes
  • Andrew Robertson (£6.3m) – 90 minutes
  • Kevin McDonald (£4.4m) – 90 minutes
  • Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m) – 0 minutes
  • Robert Snodgrass (£5.4m) – 0 minutes
  • Scott McTominay (£4.4m) – 0 minutes

Andrew Robertson was the only significant FPL name on show in Haifa as Scotland were well beaten by their hosts, despite the scoreline showing only a narrow defeat.

Robertson lined up as a left wing-back in a 3-5-2 and it was his ball that led to the foul on Steven Naismith in the Israel penalty box on 25 minutes, with Charlie Mulgrew subsequently converting the spot-kick.

Robertson and his team-mates were distinctly unimpressive throughout, however, with the hosts racking up 25 shots on goal and the Liverpool full-back getting his feet in a tangle for Israel’s equaliser.

Robertson was critical of his own performance after the match:

When a new manager comes in and under the old manager near the end the system started to work, and obviously the manager started to change it.

But that is the way he wants to do it, it will take us time to get used to it, but unfortunately, we do not really have the time.

So the lads need to go out and perform and we have not done it. But tonight, I won’t speak for any of the other lads, I was not good enough and that is what I have to look at.

So people can say about formations and all that, but at the end of the day if we do not show up – like I did not tonight – then that is a problem.

Fulham’s Kevin McDonald played the whole game in midfield, where he lined up opposite Beram Kayal. The Brighton player registered the assist for Israel’s winner, which Kieran Tierney sliced into his own net. Kayal could have been on the scoresheet himself, but had two efforts saved by Allan McGregor.

Stuart Armstrong watched the match from the bench, while Scott McTominay and Robert Snodgrass weren’t part of the 20-man squad – both reportedly had knocks, but have remained with the national team for their next fixture on Sunday so the problems aren’t thought to be serious.

Mexico 3-2 Costa Rica

  • Raul Jimenez (£5.6m) – 29 minutes

Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Raul Jimenez started Mexico’s 3-2 friendly victory over their CONCACAF rivals on the bench but emerged as a 61st-minute substitute to grab the game’s winner.

Jimenez scored from the spot on 70 minutes and later headed wide from just outside the six-yard box.

The Wolves forward is not certain to feature for his country against Chile in the early hours of next Wednesday morning, with the possibility that he will be released from international duty early in order for him to be ready for Gameweek 9.

England under-21s 7-0 Andorra under-21s

  • Jonjoe Kenny (£4.3m) – 73 minutes
  • Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.3m) – 90 minutes
  • Tom Davies (£5.3m) – 90 minutes
  • Lewis Cook (£4.8m) – 90 minutes
  • Phil Foden (£4.7m) – 90 minutes
  • Ademola Lookman (£5.1m) – 72 minutes
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.3m) – 73 minutes
  • Dominic Solanke (£4.8m) – 17 minutes
  • Ryan Sessegnon (£6.1m) – 90 minutes
  • Angus Gunn (£4.4m) – 0 minutes
  • Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.3m) – 0 minutes

The headline FPL news in the England under-21s’ demolition of their Andorran counterparts perhaps surrounded who didn’t play: Aaron Wan-Bissaka, as he had been in the previous international break, was overlooked by Aidy Boothroyd and wasn’t even among the substitutes.

Ademola Lookman and Dominic Solanke were both on the scoresheet, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring a brace. Tom Davies and Jonjoe Kenny grabbed assists, meanwhile.

USA 2-4 Colombia

  • DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m)- 90 minutes
  • Davinson Sanchez (£5.8m) – 90 minutes

DeAndre Yedlin and Davinson Sanchez played the full 90 minutes in their usual positions (right-back and centre-half respectively) but it was a game to forget for the defences as the USA and Colombia played out a six-goal thriller in Tampa.

Neither player was involved in any of the six goals.

Russia 0-0 Sweden

  • Victor Lindelof (£4.9m) – 90 minutes

Manchester United’s much-maligned centre-back played the full 90 minutes and collected a clean sheet as Sweden held Russia to a goalless draw.

There were positive words about Lindelof’s performance in a match admittedly starved of clear-cut opportunities, with the two sides mustering only three shots on target between them.

Lindelof was dropped to the bench for his side’s 3-2 win over Newcastle United on Saturday, though it remains to be seen whether he is handed a recall for the trip to Chelsea after the displays of Eric Bailly (£5.2m) and McTominay in that match.

Italy 1-1 Ukraine

  • Jorginho (£5.1m) – 90 minutes
  • Oleksandr Zinchenko (£4.8m) – 90 minutes
  • Emerson Palmieri (£5.2m) – 0 minutes
  • Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.8m) – 0 minutes

There were 90 minutes apiece for Jorginho and Oleksandr Zinchenko on Wednesday night as Italy and Ukraine played out a 1-1 draw in Genoa.

The Chelsea man was in his usual central role, while Zinchenko was deployed – and impressed – as a defensive midfielder for the visitors, having mainly been utilised as a makeshift left-back by Pep Guardiola at City.

Emerson Palmieri and Andriy Yarmolenko were both unused substitutes.

Round-up

Diogo Jota (£6.1m) came off the bench to score for Portugal under-21s in their 9-0 win over Liechtenstein last night, with Ruben Vinagre (£4.3m) also seeing action as a substitute. Diogo Dalot (£5.4m) started the game for the Portuguese youngsters and was substituted after 70 minutes.

Victor Wanyama (£4.9m) played the whole 90 minutes as Kenya were held to a goalless draw in their African Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia.

Scott Dann (£4.4m) and Connor Wickham (£4.9m) each played 45 minutes for a Crystal Palace XI against Dulwich Hamlet, as the pair continue their recovery from injury.

As has been said, Brighton have a lot of away games coming up and they are terrible there. For FPL purposes, does not really matter if they drop deep or stay pushed up, just goals and assists count. Arnie better long term.

Murray is an unsexy pick mainly because he looks like he should be playing for The Dog and Duck. But his record speaks for itself. I'd go with the Brighton player, he has both form and fixtures.

Rank these premium defenders for long-term value :-
      a> Trippier
      b> Mendy
      c> Robertson
      d> Alonso

I'm wondering whether to switch Trippier into Mendy (got a,c,d at present)

It's like fastest finger on who wants to be a millionaire lol.

I'd say BCD are all about the same tbh (if Alonso can get back to scoring he'd be the best; if Mendy shrugs of injuries he'd be the best; Robbo has the consistency at the moment). Trippier has more competition and Spurs aren't keeping as many clean sheets, especially with no Vertonghen.

Depends what else you have to consider.
Think Aurier could be back which might make things more difficult for Trippier, but on the other hand Mendy is a little untrustworthy. Laporte could play an Ottomendi role this season and help free up a bit of cash.

They would have to name a planet or a star after a manager if they ever managed to pull off the double.

It would be defiantly time to hang up the mouse if you pulled that off.

The best OR an FPL winner had in another season was Ben Crabtree (16/17 champ) with an OR of 353 in 11/12. He finished 124 pts off the top hat season.

                          Notable finishes of other winners:
                          - Sir Moult (08/09 champ) finished 516th in 13/14, finishing 142 pts off the top

                          - Matthew Martyniak (12/13 champ) finished in the top 1K another 3 times outside of the season he won FPL:
                          * 707 in 07/08, 176 pts off the top
                          * 995 in 13/14, 160 pts off the top
                          * 731 in 14/15, 168 pts off the top

Also, between 12/13 and 14/15 he finished 1st, 995th, and 731st. That's got to be up there for the best average rank over 3 seasons (578 avg)

                          - Chris McGurn (10/11 champ) finished 858th in 12/13, finishing 161 pts off the top

I know that Laporte has played the most games for Man City this season, but is he at risk of rotation with Otamendi, Stones and Kompany competing for the same positions?

Stones and Laporte are the next generation of MCI CBs and Pep is definitely trying to get the best out of them. Kompany can't stay fit more than a few games and Otamendi is 30. Sure he might get rotated at some point, but I'm a very happy owner for now.

Anything to do here? I'm terrible at holding FT's, but think it's most sensible...or should I be getting Liverpool defence in now

              Hart - Hamer
              Alonso - Bellerin - Doherty - Pereira - AWB
              Mane - Haz - Richarlison - Fraser - Hjojberg

Salah is projected more points than anyone this week but its a -4 to get him in. We know Kun will only play 60-65 minutes, and as a captain thats risky each week.

I have Salah and a bit worried about it the money invested tbh. Wouldn't take a hit personally and captaining Aguero, but opinions differ a lot on him and captain options this week.

Is it my imagination or has this been a relativity high scoring season so far?(me being an exception to that rule of course 🙁 )

If the guys at the top kept going at the pace they are at now we would be looking at some managers reaching around the 3000 points mark. Now that probably will not happen but i think Jon Reeson's record from the 09/10 season is under serious threat this season.

What are the reasons for this?

Is it just some of the lightly lads are delivering points at the right time?

Is it because of the evolution of managers that have being playing for years getting better and better at the game although looking through the top ten in the world would suggest otherwise because most of them have very short or no real history's?

Is it because of the wealth of information that is easily accessed these days on a multitude of platforms and some managers are making the best use of it?

                    Any other reasons for this?

Yeah it was an amazing score without the chips.

It is a log time ago now but if i remember correctly you only got one wildcard for the whole season back then which makes even more spectacular.

Think then English clubs were always involved in the later stages of the European cups, which meant more DGW's. Iirc there was always a DGW in GW1 OR 2.

Certainly I've 33 points more than last year and am 10k places lower

Means more players getting it right from the start - better planning and less surprises I think

I don't know there are many factors to take into consideration.

Maybe some of those short history's may suggest the presents of multi teams in the higher echelons of the game and given that may be raising the top scores.

Just a theory from an extremely paranoid man but the thought has crossed my mind.

Kane was the first 'popular' captain pick to fail I think and even then I believe Hazard's EO was actually higher for those at the top. RAM starting off so well has probably contributed too, especially seeing as AWB's (first sub) and Trippier's 'hauls' kinda coincided with Mendy's 'injury'. Rich, Fraser and then Maddison were probably the most popular 'enablers' at the start and they've all done well too.

so just a coincidence really imo, but who knows - maybe 'template' teams are getting better on the whole

cba to check, but I'm guessing the current leader has used chips that weren't available a few years ago either?

The leader of fpl is on 649 points and the only chip he has used is his wildcard in gw5.

This is his 8th season playing fpl and his best finish came during the 16/17 season where he finished in 303,737th place.

nice! It's possible that his previous 'poor' ranks could be because he normally likes taking risks to try to catch up, or that he just gives up when he starts doing badly - so maybe he can keep it up.

The reason for the high scoring early is mainly down to the success of a lot of the GW1 template players imo. Normally the first couple of months involves scrabbling to bring in the best players, if you already have six or seven it's so much easier to get a solid first eleven. Then throw in a couple of hattricks by possible captain material.

Yeah the template got off to a good start alright and this is certainly a factor. That is probably what killed me off early on.

Perhaps another factor is that this FPL fantasy game wasn't the only one in town? I've been playing fantasy football for over 15 years, first with Yahoo then the 'Original Fantasy League Classic', where I finished 4th overall in the penultimate season before it got scrapped. Last season was my first playing this FPL version and I finished just outside 100k. I'm on ca 60k so far (around 1million this time last season) although I've played my wildcard. I'm not saying I'm going to win this game but I'll be disappointed if I finish lower this season than last, having started to get the hang of this game. It's possible that other, better, managers than me have switched to FPL and are raising the bar?

Yedlin probably. The Swiss defender has good goal-scoring record in internationals, but not nailed starter.

Actually this is correct. Lascelles may be more likely to score (eg via set piece), but Yedlin is more attacking.

But all of the teams that Newcastle will face in the next 7 games, except from Bournemouth are top in the list with more headed goal attempts conceded.

I don't think so. KDB is a very solid player to have and I am looking for a way to get him in too, but in this case you are taking out two good options options for only one plus trash. People are getting Arnie in now and if Rich stays up front then he is also a great option.

Shipping 2 players who are both nailed + already providing returns for a player returning from inury, who we aren't even sure is ready to start yet (although when he does, is sure to provide a steady stream of points) and another as bench fodder?

Don't really like the moves, especially given Arnies upcoming fixtures

Thanks for the replies - I just hate that this week I'll probably have to bench either Fraser or Richie or Arnie and each week i'll do similarly

Well Frasers fixtures turn soon, but also Doherty's get a bit rough. Don't think ill ever be benching Arnie, even against Man City to be honest but will see when it comes to it. Benching one of Fraser/Doh is definitely the easier choice. Would also argue that, if it continues that way, Richy playing OOP as a striker makes him fixture proof

Should I take ownership into consideration when making transfer?

you should pick the players you think will score the most

Might want to look at who of your mini-league rivals has who towards the business end of the season, but never thought about overall ownership. Like Fossit says, aim should just be to get as many points as possible.

maybe if you've looking to protect rank then you look... but negative tactic IMO not the way FPL should be played 🙂
