It was a disappointing weekend on the refereeing front last time out, with only two dismissals and a couple of penalty awards over the eleven matches. With many of our red card favourites afforded a Premier League rest this Gameweek, it’s possible there may be slim pickings again. Don’t fret though, Mike Dean is back.

Lee Mason

With some of the obvious candidates (Lee Probert, Andre Marriner, Stuart Attwell and Mark Clattenburg) all absent this weekend and previous pick Martin Atkinson going through a late season lean spell – just one red card in his last nine games now – it’s time for a clean sweep of spot-kick loving middle men. In the form of Bolton-based Lee Mason, we have a candidate fresh from recent action. Mason awarded Swansea a penalty last week, penalising Joe Hart’s challenge on Wayne Routledge to notch up his seventh penalty award of a 17 game season so far.

He’ll be in action at Goodison Park this week for the visit of Arsenal, so the obvious call of Robin van Persie is strengthened a little, as Mason could offer him a way past the recently stubborn Everton defence. Similarly, Leighton Baines could offset the Dutchman’s threat with penalty duties of his own. Incidentally, Mason is not big on the cards, though; he hasn’t flashed a single red all season and, with a low average of 2.71 yellows per game, there’s every chance that tightrope walker Laurent Koscielny might survive another week if he’s a good lad.

Phil Dowd

For our second pick, it’s another old favourite. Dowd makes his third appearance in this fledgling column, but it’s more than just the official that’s piqued our interest in the Sunday afternoon Newcastle vs Norwich match up. These two sides both feature high in the penalties conceded stat available in our members’ area (under Team Stats > Team Discipline,) with the home side topping that particular table after conceding a whopping nine penalties in their 28 league games so far. Norwich aren’t that far behind the Magpies, with Paul Lambert’s side conceding seven themselves. Throw in Dowd’s eight penalties awarded – given at a rate greater than one in three – and the fact that his last was against Newcastle (missed by Blackburn’s David Dunn in Gameweek 23) and we have a prime candidate for some spot kick action. Demba Ba and Grant Holt are the likely beneficiaries.

Mike Dean

Finally, with 11 penalties given in his 22 games this season, Dean’s one in two average makes him a shoo-in on these pages. His penalty roadshow moves on to The Etihad stadium for Wednesday night’s rearranged clash between former leaders Manchester City and Roberto Di Matteo’s resurgent Chelsea. Spot kick duties for these two sides are fresh in the mind after both netted from 12 yards in their respective European games; Frank Lampard for Chelsea in their 4-1 win over Napoli (incidentally, while both Juan Mata and Didier Drogba were also on the pitch) and Mario Balotelli in City’s European exit at the hands of Sporting Lisbon (stepping up as expected ahead of Sergio Agüero).

Same here. Silva Doesn't really score that high though so I don't think he can really hurt me that bad. My ML leader also owns him so Young could be a good differential against him..

The reason thats putting me off is ge might nit be nailed when Valencia and Nani are back in the frame. So id ratger pick Tony V and if hes benched it 7 million sitting on it. Might be patient and wait a week then make the move. Might cost me few points, but im gonna play safe.

I think it's a great addition to the site. What if you have two cheap defenders, both with favourable home fixtures that you need to pick one of...the ref stats would sway me away from the peno-giving, card-happy chap.

Thanks Fitzy. Would love to hear some of your ideas soon?

You can't argue with the Dean and Dowd stats, and when placed at clubs prone to conceding penalties at the rate that Newcastle and Norwich do, it's foolish to pass up the potential edge.

Lee Mason however has an odd no cards policy that conflicts with his penalty count. Thought that was worth an airing. Maybe I wont bother next week.

Hi guys - currently have McLean and am looking for another cheap midfielder to go alongside him. Tempted by Siggi but they don't rotate well - any suggestions?

i have those 2, to be honest they could get some points against anyone and if push comes to shove id just play Sigi cause of his set pieces

Moses is a tempter but looking at his "big" scores they are always in away games. Barfa - just not sure - quality player but inconsistent

I'm always inclined to start looking at players in the relegation fight about this time, Moses fits the bill but you're right, his scores are hard to predict 😕

So, which one to bench from Enrique, Skrtel, Evans, Senderos and Siggy?

Currently on Siggy, with people favouring Fulham defence for clean sheet, but not sure...

Clean sheets are left on people's benches all the time. However, I'd miffed if I missed out on one of Siggy's away hauls...

It's not so much about leaving a clean sheet on the bench, as that Fulham seem to be one of the main bets for a cleanie, meaning nobody thinks Swansea will score.

yup true... but I guess if he doesn't play then another defence sub will just into the team... question:

Should I double up on Ful or spread the risk and put in Skrtel for Kelly?

Anyone in the same quandry? Trying to work out who to play and which to have first sub out of these 3:

    A. Santon
    B. Siggy
    C. McClean

    Any advice?

Surely play McClean away to Blackburn, i'd probably put Siggy first sub.

Best mid for 9.6 (really annoying as I am only 0.2 off young and gerrard). Thinking Valencia - what do you think? Other mids: Moses, Bale, Rosicky, Demps

    Got a transfer dilema

    current team is:

    Vorm, Mign
    Lescott, Clichy, BAE, JEvans, Simpson
    Bale, Silva, Dempsey, Mata, Siggy
    RVP, Ba, Holt

Should I transfer Ba and Mata/Silva for Rooney and another midfielder?
    OR
Transfer Lescott and Silva/Mata for Young and another defender e.g. Enrique

Am leaning towards option 2 as I have a feeling Rooney might be rested. At least with young I'll have some Man U coverage (if he plays) and get rid of the man city double act defence.

I shouldn't be reading to much into this but after reading this Article i want to keep Baines just in case a penalty does come up for Everton!

Was considering doing Baines > BAE/Sagna/Verm
