Antonio Valencia looks irresistible right now. While you read this, at the current rate of acquisition, a dozen or so Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will have snapped him up for their squads. By the time you stop reading this, you may well join them.

Is it unthinkable to ignore Valencia’s appeal? Certainly there are alternatives for a midfield slot in our squads – notably Arsenal’s Theo Walcott, a player who has grown in stature this season, not least in the recent run of results that has seen the Gunners push Spurs aside in the race for third.

Using the data available, including our own ICT Index and Opta’s statistics, we examine Valencia and Walcott’s credentials, weighing up the value of the United man whilst discussing a scenario where the “unthinkable” could apply…

    I just sold Bale for Valencia. Let's hope it doesn't bite me gain like last time (16 points). Still have silva, sessegnon, siggy, dempsey...here's my reckoning...
    here's why...
    ...bale has chelsea this week. then vs swansea. but i have a swansea keeper and defender. also, my other goalie, schwarzer is playing united that week (rooney, valencia). so that would cancel this out. i never play attacker/midfielder vs goalie/defender. it makes no statistical sense over a season. bale then has a good game, then another tough game, then no game at all. on the week with no game at all, dempsey, BAE, Ba, senderos also have no games. so i need to start shedding one of these.
    But why, you ask, didn't i sell dempsey, silva or sessignon instead?...dempsey will be on my bench this week, then he has 2 savage fixtures. silva has a game every week (i might sell him soon but he gets another chance), sessegnon...wait and see...brilliant fixture this week...then united and chelsea. i will probably sell him for walcott on saturday.

      I don't really understand the whole 'not playing attackers v defenders' thinking. I look at my defenders and decide who has the best chance of a clean sheet, then look at my attackers and decide who has the best chance of getting attacking points.

      It's not as though the fact that you're playing them against each other has an effect whatsoever on how well they will actually do.

        ah but it does 1966....
        it's fundamental statistics. if you play it out over the course of the season, you will have cancelled yourself out and missed out on potential points. sure, on a once off, or if forced to do it, but, the greater the power of n (ie.over the course of a season), the more bang for your buck.
        as long as Bale keeps quiet, i'm in the clear.
        Finished 142nd last year. I was 80th coming into the final week. It was gonnna go on my CV if I made top 100. Probably just as well I didn't then! Thanks lads

          Like you said, you're on the clear IF Bale stays quiet.. You're basically choosing to go with all or nothing but if played against each other you're aiming for an overall +points between the pairing...

          Or am I still lack few brain cells? 🙂

            still lacking i'm afraid.
            by having defender vs attacker, one will do well, one not so much. or both not so well. so, yes, you are hedgeing your bets in a way.
            by having defender and attacker in different games, both can do well or one of them or none of them.
            but, in the first instance, both can not do well. in the second instance, both CAN do well. even if slightly inferior players in the second instance, you are statistically much better off over the course of a season always having option B. eg.senderos not against one of your strikers, instead of Vermaelen vs one of your strikers.

            does this make any sense?

          You could just as easily miss out on potential points the other way around, though. It does reduce your maximum possible score in any given week, but it also reduces your minimum possible score.

              I just ignore it, pick the defenders I think will do best and the attackers I think will do best. Usually that means I'm not playing a def v an attacker, but not always.

          Bale is someone who scores well, often in tougher fixtures.

          Swansea is a good defense all around.

          You picked a side: its doesn't mean you picked the right one. There's no problem with playing them against each other. I'm not statistics major, but I know the concept of hedging your bets. Just because Bale takes points from Swans doesn't mean Bale won't outscore what swans would have made, or that Bale scores in other weeks won't more than make up for it.

          Also....Sess has two horrible fixtures after this one, but you keep him instead of the highest scoring midfielder in the game with brilliant fixtures for the rest of the year after this week?

        I think you're right and I wish I had done this last week.

        Benched Siggy because I had Schwarzer and Kelly. Went out of the FPL Cup as a result on a tiebreaker. Had I played Siggy would have waltzed it. Not dropping him again. Live and learn.

      I was considering Bale out as well, with the idea of VDV back in in 3-4 GWs.

      I have a WC so the blanks don't influence me as much, but I like the thought process of why you chose Bale out over the others.

        Bale out just worked for me, given my other players and the vs fixtures and my stand on attack vs defence:
        I haven't explained it clearly, partly because I can't put words on it, but Def/Goalie vs attacker is statistically a no-no over the course of a season. I'm almost certain of it. almost.
        Gotta get back to studying for my GP exams on Tuesday! Anything to distract. anything.

          Sure, you're hedging your bets with attack vs defence. Never a Win win though!

          BUT...

          with a strong enough bench, you can avoid this scenario and potentially have a Win Win and ALMOST the same statistical probability of a Win Lose, Lose Lose.

          What the latter gives you is the p[otential to win big, with almost the same probability of same points as the first scenario.

          This works over the course of the season. You must have a functional bench though

    just taken my second hit of the season. Silva and Ba out for Rooney and Tony V. I am well aware i should have had Rooney already but feel i have just about got away with it. Side now looks a bit identikit so its up to Sess and the mighty Suarez (why have i got him....) to deliver.

        To be fair, Aguero is good at home, but at the moment Adebayor isn't good anywhere, that one off 20 odd pointer as well as a (wrongly awarded) penalty vs Arsenal are his only highligthts since Christmas

        Ah Jonty I can't believe you consider Spurs fixtures to be great too!

        SWA sun are tough fixtures going by recent form of Swansea and Sunderland (at home).
        NOR is probably the only fixture that could provide returns.

        To top it all, Spurs lack any kind of attacking stability at the moment, with Saha/VDV/Defoe/Lennon/Kranj all switching in and out.

          their form does worry me, but I fully anticipate goals in all those games. When on fire spurs are excellent and their home form is very good defensively.
