Eleven teams guaranteed a Double Gameweek as Palace progress in FA Cup

Crystal Palace’s comfortable 2-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers on Sunday afternoon means that the Eagles will join at least ten other Premier League sides in having one (or more) Double Gameweek in the months ahead.

Five top-flight matches originally pencilled in for Gameweek 31 will have to be rescheduled as a consequence of this weekend’s FA Cup fifth-round ties, while Chelsea are guaranteed a Double Gameweek regardless of their result against Manchester United on Monday evening as their Gameweek 27 fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion remains outstanding.

Just when these postponed Premier League games will be rearranged for remains unconfirmed but Gameweek 32 looks the obvious candidate at this stage.

The 11 sides who will definitely enjoy a Double Gameweek are:

Arsenal
Brighton
Cardiff
Chelsea
Crystal Palace
Manchester City
Manchester United
Southampton
Spurs
Watford
Wolves

Everton will join that contingent if Chelsea beat Manchester United on Monday night, as the Toffees are scheduled to face Maurizio Sarri’s troops in Gameweek 31.

We discussed the Blank Gameweek 31 picture in greater detail in our Scout Notes for Wolves’ victory over Bristol City, while we will analyse possible chip strategies in the coming days ahead.

The remainder of this article will instead focus on Palace’s success at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Doncaster Rovers 0-2 Crystal Palace

  • Goals: Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.4m), Max Meyer (£5.6m)
  • Assists: Luka Milivojevic (£6.2m), Andros Townsend (£5.9m)

Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m) will be free to feature in Gameweek 27 after serving a one-match suspension for improper conduct in Sunday’s victory over Doncaster Rovers.

Crystal Palace’s initial appeal had left Zaha free to play against West Ham United in Gameweek 26 but the Football Association’s subsequent rejection of that appeal left the Ivorian sidelined for the Eagles’ FA Cup fifth-round tie in South Yorkshire.

Zaha has two goals and as many assists in his last five Premier League starts.

Palace didn’t particularly miss their talismanic winger on Sunday as they coasted to a 2-0 win over their League One opponents but, by the same token, the likes of Michy Batshuayi (£6.5m) and Jordan Ayew (£5.7m) failed to impress in his stead.

Ayew struggled in an unfamiliar role on the left of Roy Hodgson’s 4-3-3, while Batshuayi looked rusty on his first start in a Palace shirt.

The Chelsea loanee had a free header blocked in the first half before his heavy touch ruined a one-on-one chance on 72 minutes and there was little evidence to suggest he might oust Christian Benteke (£6.3m) from the Palace starting XI in Gameweek 27, let alone enter the mid-price FPL forward debate this week.

Luka Milivojevic (£6.2m) was perhaps the best Palace player on show at the Keepmoat, setting Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.4m) on his way for the Eagles’ opening goal before “assisting the assister” for his side’s second strike: Max Meyer (£5.6m) nodding in from close range after Andros Townsend (£5.9m) had headed Milivojevic’s excellent chipped pass back across goal.

Milivojevic and Townsend aren’t the most exciting of midfield picks but for those Fantasy bosses looking for security of starts when, for example, compiling a Double Gameweek free-hit side, the pair are reliable sorts: the Palace duo are two of just five FPL midfielders – team-mate James McArthur (£4.8m) being another – who have started in each of the 26 Gameweeks contested this season.

Again thanks mostly to his penalty-taking duties, Milivojevic is well on his way to matching his ten-goal haul of 2017/18 – the Serbia international has seven Premier League strikes to his name already this season.

The Palace set-piece specialist (who it should be said is already on eight yellow cards this season) was again his side’s arch-creator at Doncaster, registering more key passes (five) than anyone on show.

Townsend has a modest seven attacking returns to his name this season (four goals, three assists) but his role on the right-hand side of Hodgson’s 4-3-3 is seemingly his to lose: the former Spurs and Newcastle winger has featured in every single one of Palace’s competitive matches this season, with the EFL Cup second-round tie at Swansea the only game in which he hasn’t started.

Elsewhere on Palace-watch, FPL defender Schlupp scored for the second successive match while playing “out of position” in central midfield.

The return to fitness of Cheikhou Kouyate (£4.7m), who emerged as a second-half substitute on Sunday, may threaten his security of starts, however.

Patrick van Aanholt (£5.4m) was the only one of Palace’s regular back four to be given a run-out, meanwhile, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.6m) rested and James Tomkins (£4.3m) returning from a calf injury on the bench.

Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) started ahead of Vicente Guaita (£4.2m) in the Palace goal, with Hodgson suggesting after the match that he will continue to use the Welsh custodian in cup matches – though the budget FPL goalkeeper still faces an FA hearing for an alleged gesture in January.

Hodgson said:

I had no doubts about him playing. He deserves to play and was very good today. He’s played in all the cup matches so far and whatever the draw is I would expect him to play in the next one too.

The charge is what it is. We’ve spoken about that at great length. We are both hoping and confident that charge won’t lead to any particular sanctions.

Hodgson added on the game itself:

I thought both teams tried to play good football. There were some good moves from both sides and we were able, not just us but Doncaster too, to get the ball down and under some control.

They [the Palace players] worked very, very hard. Even the players who didn’t have the best of games worked very, very hard to make certain that we gave nothing away. But I’m fortunate that I’ve come to a club where it’s par for the course that players are like that.

Our priority and our focus still remains the same, that we would like to do well in the cup but we would like even more to stay in the Premier League. That always remains the priority.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Hennessey; Ward, Kelly, Dann, Van Aanholt; Milivojevic, Schlupp, Meyer; Ayew (Kouyate 60′), Batshuayi (Benteke 75′),
Townsend (McArthur 80′).

So FH 31 you surely want to be loading up DGW 32 players in the mean time who have a lower chance of blanking again in 33. Much more complicated than previous years definitely going to be the defining period of the season

That would leave you with just one Liverpool and Anderson going forward. It’s an issue for 31 but also the intervening matches where Liverpool have good fixtures. If you then switch Auba to Kun in 28 you’d be really committed to the 31 FH unless you take multiple hits especially if Chelsea go out.

One Liverpool and one City from 28 just doesn’t feel right.

I don't really get the prevailing narrative that planning for 31 involves loading up on crap players. Liverpool have great fixtures, as to West Ham, Newcastle are as good a choice defensively as most over the next few weeks & there's Leicester too if you trust them. I can get 8-9 decent choices out for 31 with FTs and still carry Kun, Pogba, Rashford and the Wolves lads for the foreseeable. I'm pretty set on FH32.

It’s valid, I’ll need to look at the fixtures and see whether my GW32 WC team looks better in GW34 then my GW31 team.

Also depends on who goes through in the cup in GW31!

Prices could also play a part as likely cheaper to buy that WC team in GW32 rather than GW34/35.

            Ok mate GGMU

Result will depend upon which Pogba would turn up - n our defense is still pretty bad, we've been keeping clean sheets either by opponents missing sitters or heroics from de gea - tonight I expect Chelsea to put at least 2 past us

He needs a boost imo or it'll be too late for him.

The after effects of 6-0 result will be seen as well imo - Chelsea have clear problems like we had up until Jose sacking and we won 2-0 against a pretty confident gunners team very recently and it should be the template to follow again tonight

Planning to spend 2 FT for my main striker spot until GW31. I have Firmino atm and assuming CHE will have a GW31 game. Which option would you prefer?

    A) Keep Firmino for this week (Captain Son), Firmino > Kun @ GW28, Kun>Higuain @GW31

    B) Firmino > Auba (C) this week, Auba > Higuain @ GW29 (right before Fulham game)

    C) With one more FT: Firmino > Auba (C) this week , Auba> Kun @ GW28, Kun>Higuain @GW31

Everyone seems to be going for their FH in 31 or 32. My plan is currently:

    31. 9 players with no hits
    32. WC
    33. FH
    34. Save transfer
    35. BB with 2 free transfers

I can then TC Salah against either Fulham or Hudds. Nobody else seems to be considering this so is there an obvious mistake I’m making that I can’t see?

Good to know I’m not making a rookie mistake then!

I feel this is the best way to avoid a nightmare 33 and a team of Fabianski, Robertson, Pereira, Adam Smith, Diop, Salah (TC), Mane, Anderson & Arny/King feels strong enough for 31 plus I won’t lose the value I have in Son, Pogba, Rashford etc

With Lanzini back in full training and Nasri shortly, I'd say Antonio isn't nailed. He plays more or less up front with Chica - but when Arnie starts (assuming he will), then Antonio will fall back.

Guys Im building a team that can play in 27, 31 (and possibly 33 too) and am really torn between the following possible moves. Ive got 2.3m in bank so plenty options. I really want to take trade out a player who isn't really contributing eg Jack Simpson (a non playing defender) or Holberg. Im thinking:

Simpson TO Perriera OR a Yedlin / Schar?

    Or

Holberg TO Hayden (Newcastle) OR Mane

Any experienced FPL'ers who can help me pick: 1) Newcastle defender, 2) Hayden or 3) Mane? I already have Salah and Robbo.

    Thanks a lot

Thanks AMEY, he was my original punt. I was just surprised at how good Hayden's stats are and fact he is so cheap that I thought he is worth having. Ive been trying to get rid of Holberg for ages! But Simpson has to go right as he isn't playing

Hayden may lose his place on the team when Shelvey comes back fit.
Pereira has good run of fixtures & won't have a blank gw.
So he's a great pick till gw 34

Thanks YUVA - I agree they have a nice run. To be honest, if I don't get a Newc defender in this week, Ill be looking to do that next week as I'd like to get rid of Bennet or Benerak.

Folks are well over thinking the blank weeks for teams and the double game weeks. If you have a wildcard left or free hit think you will be sorted

Not sure it's quite that simple.. but yeah, those of us who still have all our chips and WC are relatively fine.

We'll see what happens in the United v Chelsea match. Then we can start planning transfers more

Even if you have all the chips you still need to planning, the right chip strategy and to carefully use your FTs.

Once the draw for the FA Cup quarter-finals has been made this evening, the biggest decision is whether to play your Free Hit in GW31 or GW32.
Other decisions about specific transfers in the next few game-weeks depend on this.

If you plan to Free Hit in GW31 then you can just go for the strongest possible team and get rid of any non-starters.
You may not get the maximum number of DGWers, but you should be fairly well set up for both DGWs, and also for all the single game-weeks.
You may however need to choose whether to prioritise a full team for GW33 or a stronger team for DGW32.

If however you plan to Free Hit in GW32 then you can build your team towards blank game-weeks GW31 and GW33 and then use your Wildcard in GW34 to set up a strong squad for DGW35.
This strategy is really only to be recommended if you still have your Wildcard, but still has the weakness that you may suffer in the single game-weeks prior to GW31.

Bringing in players to make a playing 11 that plays both 31 and 33 so looking at players from the below teams - Who should be in my thinking?

    Leicester (GW31 & 33)
    Bournemouth (GW31 & 33)
    Huddersfield (GW31 & 33)
    Burnley (GW31 & 33)
    Everton (GW33 only)
    Arsenal (GW33 only)
    Southampton (GW33 only)

I would look at it the other way and see who is in your current team that you wouldn't mind losing between now and GW30 (for me, for example, I would be cool with losing Shaw this week, and Chilwell looks a better replacement from GW27 until GW30).

Great idea, I've decided to keen Digne, Kola and Fabianski as they all play one of the 2 Blanks so that gives me a clue as to who I need to move on. Sane is a must to go, his price and the fact he is being utilised in the cups shows I need rid. I want to keep Pogba and Rashy as close to GW31 as I need to, same with Son, Doherty and Jimenez. That leaves the below to move on:

        - Sane - IMMEDIATE RELEASE!
        - Hamer - As a backup to Fabianski
        - WanB - GW28 as play Man Yoo
        - Doherty (Chelsea in GW29)
        - Jiminez (Chelsea in GW29)
        - Pogba (Keep to GW30 if possible)
        - Rashford (Keep to GW30 if possible)
        - Son (Keep to GW30 if possible - SOU in GW30)

    Some advice needed please guys.

    Current team:

    Fabianski
    Robertson | Kolasinac | Jonny | Wan-Bissaka
    Anderson | Salah | Pogba | Son (c)
    Rashford | Jimenez

    Subs: Hamer | Alexander-Arnold | Billing | Aguero

    1ft, 2.8m ITB

My plan was to save this GW, do Son - > Sterling next GW and Kola - > Pereira in GW29. Have exact funds right now but Pereira is due to rise this week, scuppering the above plan.

Overall objective is to build towards GW31 but see Sterling as a valuable differential for the coming 3 GWs.

    My options are:

    A) Kola - > Pereira before price rise this GW and Son - > Sterling next GW;
    B) Son - > Sterling next GW and Kola for cheaper Leic/Newc def in GW29;
    C) Keep Son.

    Any pointers would be appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Smokey

Rather FH32/WC34 since GW31/33 should be easy to handle with transfers next few weeks so no need to use a chip on it.

    Fab Hamer
    Alonso AWB Shaw Doherty TAA
    Sterling Son Salah Pogba Højberg
    Firmino Mitro Jimenez
    1ft, 1.1 itb.
    Plan is to FH32, WC 34, BB35
Have 5 player who will play GW31.
Alonso might play also but I was going to drop him for Pereira/Chilwell or else doubtful 11 players out now.
Drop Alonso as 1st priority now? Sterling can stay on bench this week.
    What do you think?

Jarvish provided DGW articles free of charge on here back before Crellin and his pretty (and often inaccurate) spreadsheet became the order of the day.

His understanding of the DGW ins-and-outs and the perspective that provides continues to make Crellin look like an amateur.

If FFS had any sense they'd offer Jarvish a small fee to write the DGW articles. Then we'd get some good ones. 🙂

This is my team and I have already used up WC and have the three remaining chips available in FH BB TC.

Looking at this team which is the best strategy for me ? Prepare team for BGWs and FH in first/second DGW and use TC in other DGW? Or any other strategy would work better ??
