FFS Cup

The latest FFS Cup fixtures and results

The third round of our latest FFS Cup took place in Blank Gameweek 31.

There were 128 Fantasy managers remaining in our tournament before Saturday’s deadline but only two were former FFS Cup winners.

One of those site users, donnellyc, bowed out after a narrow 35-34 loss to TwiggsJameson.

Our other former champion, 2EyedTurk, lives to fight another day after a 32-28 win over Homer21.

The highest-ranked team in the round-of-128, Deporhostia, exited the competition after being pipped 42-43 by space.

That means we have only one manager remaining who sits inside the top 1,000: HBCAMPBELL, who has an overall rank of 931 after Gameweek 31.

Rotation/s Alter Ego and G-Whizz both entered the top 10k this weekend and our two mods both progressed to the last 64 after comfortable victories.

There was one draw in the third round: rselfy123 squeaking past Dream_team_legend due to a superior overall rank.

Lal Toofan beat Taking the Mkhitaryan 39-32 and is now just ten places behind his Gameweek 31 opponent in the overall FPL rankings.

Vulken is the Fantasy manager with the lowest OR (1,723,241) who still remains in the competition.

The third round results were as follows:

The only two united options i like this week are Pogba & Lukaku but that's just my hunch.

Don't like Duffy, otherwise very nice.

All solid options, think they'll do well in 32. Must win games, and expect Wolves to rest key players against them.

unpopular opinion: hazard as good a captain option this week as the city frontrunners

..in the reverse legs of his potential dgw:

    hazard v cardiff: 20 pts
    hazard v brighton: 13 pts

caveat: he's in some shocking form

Just to put to bed the myth that Wolves ''Rotate'' prior to or after the FA Cup games - every core FPL player has started every game they were available for, bar Doherty in GW23:

GW21 Palace - Doherty, Bennet, Boly, Jonny, Jiminez all start. Jota injured
    - FA CUP R3 - Liverpool
GW22 Man City - Doherty, Bennet, Boly, Jonny, Jiminez, Jota all start

GW23 Leciester - Bennet, Jonny, Jiminez, Jota all start. Boly suspended. DOHERTY BENCHED
    - FA CUP R4 - Shrewsbury
GW34 West Ham - Doherty, Bennet, Jiminez, Jota all start. Boly suspended. Jonny Injured

GW25 Everton - Doherty, Bennet, Boly, Jonny, Jiminez, Jota all start
    - FA CUP R4R - Shrewsbury Replay
GW26 Newcastle - Doherty, Bennet, Boly, Jonny, Jiminez, Jota all start
    - FA CUP R5 - Bristol
GW27 Bournemouth - Doherty, Bennet, Boly, Jonny, Jiminez, Jota all start

GW30 Chelsea - Doherty, Boly, Jonny, Jiminez, Jota all start. Bennett suspended
    - FA CUP R6 - Man Utd

Whatever you say, there is still a risk.

And risk is not something you want to take on a FH

There's a risk for sure - but Wolves have no record of rotating prior to or after their FA cup games to date. Of course they *may* do so in their next cup match, but the evidence suggests the contrary.

indeed...especially now they have a chance to get to FA cup final.

Winning breeds confidence, what better way to go into an FA Cup Final than off the back of a another league win - and if 7th place in the league happens to carry more prize money than a losing cup final appearance, and 7th place in the league happens to guaranteed european qualification slot which a cup final appearance does not... that's a lot of factors in the ''against'' rotation box...

          But no guarantees of course

    2. HamezMace
      • 9 Years

I think the difference now is that the United game is only a few days before the FA cup semi final.
We're at a stage in the season where Wolves have nothing to play for in the league - not getting top 4, and not going down.
...and popular pick Jimenez is away with the national team this week also.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        5 years, 1 month ago

West Ham GW24 was 3 days after a cup match - no rotation...

Everton GW25 was 3 days before a cup match - no rotation...

8th in the league = no european qualification

7th in league = european qualification + extra prize money

I think they've more to play for in the league than the cup to be honest - but this doesn't guarantee they won't divert from what they've done all season and play their strongest team in the league matches before and after cup games

          Good points and fair analysis.
For me, they just look primed to rotate in that United game, and there are plenty of options that I'm less concerned about.
I'm just as happy with Zaha/Rashford as I would be with Jimenez.
Just as happy with Milivojevic as I would be with Jota.
Jonny would be a nice option at 4.3m for the defence...but Wan Bissaka, Duffy, or Schlupp will do.

So playing his strongest team in every league match directly before and after every FA Cup match is evidence of him prioritising the cup?

I'm not making a judgement on the priority. I'm just saying he will more than likely start against Watford, and he didn't in some cup games. So inferring whether he's likely to start the league game before the Watford game using Shrewsbury cup round as an example doesn't work.

How about rather than using just Shrewsbury, we use the Liverpool, Bristol, Man Utd and both Shrewsubury games? And couple them with the rewards that higher league position brings vs. a losing cup final appearance?

there are 5 games to use in this analysis and 2 were Shrewsbury where he didn't start. I just don't think there is enough data here to draw any meaningful conclusions.

That being said it is interesting to see the lineups and I don't think Wolves players should be discounted out of hand.

I disagree - multiple meaningful conclusions can be drawn, including but not limited to:

                        (a) Wolves have not rotated in the league before or after any FA cup match this season
                        (b) 7th place in the league has more prize money than a losing cup final appearance
                        (c) 7th place in the league gets an automatic European place which a losing cup final appearance does not

This certainly does not guarantee they won't rotate this time, but it's never happened before in any league games this season

And it also puts to bed the myth that Wolves rotate in the league before or after FA cup matches

I would only be interested in this analysis if it showed that it's likely Jimenez would start both games. It doesn't.

No analysis can guarantee any player will start any game

But the analysis does put to bed the myth that that Wolves rotate in the league before or after FA cup games

It depends on how much weight you attach to facts and evidence versus how much you attribute to intuition and gut feel.

If you attach weight to the facts & evidence that Jiminez has never missed a league game due to the FA Cup, and that there is more prize money for 7th than a losing cup final, and that there is European position guaranteed for 7th, then you could reasonably say that the evidence strongly indicates (not guarantees) that he won’t be rested in the league to prioritise the cup.

If you attach weight to the sentimentality and romance of the cup, and/or a gut feel that Nuno will do what he has never done and rest Jiminez in a league game to prioritise the cup then you could reasonably say that sentimentality & gut feel indicate he will be rested in the league to prioritise the cup.

Either way, the myth that wolves rest players in the league before or after FA Cup games has been put to bed

I'll say it again. 2 of the 5 games were Shrewsbury where he didn't start, so no facts and evidence 40% of the time.
We'll never agree, thanks for the debate.

Regardless of opposition - all of the available evidence confirms that season to date Wolves have not prioritised the Cup over the league

1 - In every game this season (9 games in total) Wolves have played their strongest team in the league directly before and after FA Cup games, bar Doherty in GW23.
2 - There is an objective and quantifiable financial incentive to finishing 7th versus 8th, 9th or 10th in the league
3 - There is a guaranteed European position for finishing 7th (there is not for making the cup final)

If you disagree with any of 1-3, I'm afraid you are wrong - because by definition you cannot disagree with fact

If you disagree with thinking Jiminez is unlikley to be rested for a league game - that's ok - the evidence doesn't support the position, but it doesn't mean it won't happen

And the myth that Wolves rest players before or after an FA Cup tie has been put to bed

...but there is no evidence of Wolves resting players in the league before or after FA Cup matches?

For FPL purposes we are concerned with League appearances and the evidence does not support the position that Wolves rotate players in the league before or after FA Cup games...

If you are worried about Wolves resting players in the cup, because they rested Jiminez for Shrewsbury, that is a different debate with different implications (I don't think they will personally, but anything could happen)

So the myth that Wolves rest players before or after an FA Cup tie has been put to bed

If a player comes on as a cup sub it's unlikely he'd need a rest in the league. Which happened in 2 of the cup games. If Jimenez started every game then the picture changes.

Of course the picture would change if different players had played different games - but regardless of that speculation, the picture is that Wolves have not rotated players before or after an FA Cup match this season

It doesn't mean they won't do it this time, but the evidence doesn't support that position

And the myth that Wolves rest players before or after an FA Cup tie has been put to bed

With poor fixtures and the rotation risk I don't see Wolves players as FH options - seems the only ones that do are those who are still clinging to their value.

Good work - can see what you're driving at; but I think the uncertainty is borne out of NES' occasionally surprising benchings - such as Doherty vs Cardiff + Leicester that you reference, as well as the Patricio one. Neves / Moutinho have also missed out on occasion (I know they aren't big fantasy options but it speaks to manager's mindset...)

Correct me if I'm wrong here but that's sometimes also down to 3 games in a week, rather than just FA Cup? Jimenez was benched vs Newcastle (a) in December - which was 3rd game in a week.

Basically, we probably know what line-up he'll want to play in the semi-final... as such, it creates enough uncertainty around the 2nd game in particular to warrant looking elsewhere on the FH as you want to maximise the value of that chip.

These posts are very beneficial to the discussion on this site, people sometimes reason together without taking into account certain factors (like the fact Wolves haven’t rotated this season in the PL) and force a virtual consensus that makes Wolves rotation in 32 an objective fact, leading to no one choosing their assets
for this gameweek or the ones who want them being discouraged to do so.

Wolves have rotated in the PL this season though ? And the manager has said that they have a small first team squad of 16 which he implied can’t play 3 games without rotation.

Wolves haven’t played in an FA Cup semi as their 3rd game in a week either, so .... 😉

Wolves actually really rarely rotate their core FPL players in the league (Doherty has started 27 of the 29 league games he's been available for, Jiminez has started 28 of 29 for example)

And whilst they rarely rotate their core FPL players, they have NEVER rotated their core FPL players before or after an FA Cup game (bar Doherty GW23 as we discussed before)

And also as we discussed before - this does not guarantee Wolves won't rotate in future, because that is impossible to guarantee...

The point being made however (concentrate on this for a second) is that the available evidence doesn't support a position that Wolves will rotate players in the league to prioritise the FA cup

                The available evidence being:

1 - In every game this season Wolves have played their strongest team in the league directly before and after FA Cup games, bar Doherty in GW23.
2 - There is an objective and quantifiable financial incentive to finishing 7th versus 8th, 9th or 10th in the league
3 - There is a guaranteed European position for finishing 7th (there is not for making the cup final)

Once again - this doesn't mean they won't this time do what they have never done and rotate in the league to prioritise the FA Cup.... but it DOES mean that the evidence doesn't support that position

Regarding the 3 games without rotation - try GW19/20/21?

And as originally stated - the myth that Wolves rest players before or after an FA Cup tie has been put to bed 😉

Only 7 players started in all 3 games for Wolves (with 3 games in a week) in 18, 19 & 20? and only six started all games in 27, 28 & 29 with 5 changes in the last of the 3 games.

This is clear empirical evidence that Wolves do shuffle the pack when they have had 3 important (PL in this case) games in a week.

Wolves are now safe from relegation and their biggest game over the next 3 is the FA Cup semi final, so .... Wolves do rotate when they have 3 games in a week, and will probably target their most important game with their strongest team, which will be the FA Cup semi final.

The need to rotate changes depending upon the time of the season (safe or not from relegation) and the strength of the opposition (Cardiff, Shrewsbury) and the importance of the game (PL, early FA Cup round, late FA Cup round), therefore reference to rotation or not before previous FA Cup games is meaningless, PL teams generally field weaker teams in the early rounds of the FA Cup (and accordingly don’t need to rotate in the PL if there are 3 games in a week) and only step it up when they sense they can win it.

All I can add is, if you think Wolves are safe from rotation, back your opinion and get Doherty, Jiminez & one other in your team for 32. If you don’t do that I will be very disappointed 🙂

Let's take a closer look shall we? 🙂

                    3 game set #1 (Friday 21st - Sat 29th Dec):
GW18 Liverpool - Bennett, Boly, Doherty, Jonny, Jiminez all start. Jota injured
GW19 Fulham - Bennett, Boly, Doherty, Jonny, Jiminez all start. Jota injured
GW 20 Tottenham - Bennett, Boly, Doherty, Jonny, Jiminez all start. Jota injured

                    3 game set #2: (Wednesday 26th Dec - Wed 2nd Jan):
GW19 Fulham - Bennett, Boly, Doherty, Jonny, Jiminez all start. Jota injured
GW 20 Tottenham - Bennett, Boly, Doherty, Jonny, Jiminez all start. Jota injured
GW 21 Palace - Bennett, Boly, Doherty, Jonny, Jiminez all start. Jota injured

So here we have not one, but two examples where all of their core FPL players have started all 3 games - and its their core FPL players that matter for FPL

If you're concerned about them rotating Traore, Saiss, Vinagre etc - that's a different debate, albeit one that hasn't got any real FPL relevance so it's not one I'm personally interested in, but I'm sure you could find other like minded folks with whom you could discuss these concerns

And of course, as we have (already, repeatedly) established, none of this is a guarantee that they won't do what they have never done and rotate players in the league before or after an FA Cup match, but there is no evidence to support that position as we have (already, repeatedly) demonstrated

So once again - the myth that Woves rest players before or after an FA Cup Tie has been put to bed 😉

Now it’s only core players that aren’t rotated lol but Saiss, Neves, Castro Otto, Moutinho & Dendoncker all missed out on at least one game in 18,19 & 20 ... but why not look at 27, 28 & 29?, the most relevant gameweeks ? Pat, Doherty, Neves, Moutinho, Castro Otto all rested in the last game, core players so it defeats your argument - plus the fact the manager said he had to rotate because of their small squad. It’s the back end of the season too, players are tired, carrying niggles ...

So there it is, rotation of core players when Wolves have 3 games in a week, more rotation later in season and the manger has explained why he needs to rotate.

No one is saying that Wolves rotate before FA Cup games (it’s the reverse, they rotate in easier fixtures like Shrewsbury), it’s completely irrelevant so there is nothing to be put to bed, what people are saying is that Wolves are likely to rotate before *this* FA Cup game, a semifinal against very beatable opposition.

You really don’t seem to be getting it but it is quite funny lol 🙂

To address your first concern (''now it’s only core players that aren’t rotated lol')

Have you noticed you are posting in a thread pointing out that Wolves' core FPL players have not been rotated before or after FA Cup games?

If not I'll refer you back to the OP which you can read & then let me know if you're still having difficulty with it...

If so... then I really don't know where you're going with disagreeing that Wolves core FPL players have not been rotated before or after FA cup games this season - They have started every pre- and post- cup game they've been available for, with the exception of Doherty in GW23 which has already been discussed.

To address your second point (''Wolves are likely to rotate before *this* FA Cup game, a semifinal against very beatable opposition'')

The available evidence does not support this position:

1 - In every game this season (8 games in total) Wolves have played their strongest team in the league directly before and after FA Cup games, bar Doherty in GW23.
2 - There is an objective and quantifiable financial incentive to not prioritising the cup over the league - i.e. finishing 7th versus 8th, 9th or 10th in the league
3 - There is a guaranteed European position for finishing 7th (there is not for making the cup final)

If you disagree with any of 1-3, I'm afraid you are wrong - because by definition you cannot disagree with fact

If you disagree with thinking Jiminez is unlikley to be rested for a league game to prioritise a cup game - that's ok - the evidence doesn't support the position, but that doesn't mean it won't happen

And the myth that Wolves rest players before or after an FA Cup tie has been put to bed 😉

Don’t you understand that whether or not Wolves have rotated before an FA Cup game is irrelevant to whether the rotate before ‘this’ FA Cup semi ? and what ‘myth’ is there, you seem to have made one up to prove it wrong lol.

The manager doesn’t wake up go ‘oh my god, we have an FA Cup fixture, let’s rest some players for it ... but he may go ‘oh my god, we have an FA Cup semi-final, are safe in the league and have a game in hand over most rivals, lets shuffle the pack and have a crack at getting to Wembley’

But anyway, how many double game weeks took place before an FA Cup round so far?

We are taking about now, about a one off game that if they win they are in an FA Cup final, and they have two games in 4 days before this and the manger has already said his team needs to be rotated in such circumstances.

If you can show me that Wolves never rotate before an FA Cup semi final where they have had a double gameweek before hand, then we have something 😉

Any way, are you getting 3 Wolves this week ?

I can see you're really struggling with the logic here, but let's try again & see how far we can get.

As I said, no analysis can guarantee any player will start any game - so unfortunately no-one is going to be able to show you the very specific permutation you have described above of DGW's before Cup semi finals (As an aside, we have been able to demonstrate multiple examples of 3 game spells where their core FPL players have not been rotated in response to your assertion that Wolves are incapable of playing 3 games in a week)

What can be very clearly shown however is that Wolves have had eight (8!) opportunities to rest their core FPL players to prioritise their progress in the FA Cup this season, and in every one of those 8 opportunities, bar Doherty in GW23, their core FPL players have started every league game they were available for pre- and post- FA Cup ties - incredibly strong evidence that they have not prioritised the cup over the league

What can also be clearly shown is that there is an objective and quantifiable financial incentive to not prioritising the cup over the league - i.e. finishing 7th carries objectively & measurably more financial reward than 8th, 9th or 10th in the league.

It can also be clearly demonstrated that there is a guaranteed European position for finishing 7th (which there is not for making the cup final).

To put that evidence together and come up with the conclusion that Wolves are likely to rest players in the league to prioritise the FA Cup is just a bit strange frankly - but (as we have already discussed) it depends on how much weighting you attribute to facts and evidence, versus how much you attribute to gut-feel, sentimentality and the romance of the FA Cup.

The facts and evidence indicate (strongly indicate) that Wolves are unlikely to rest or rotate their core FPL players in the league to prioritise the FA Cup. Sentimentality & gut-feel however, may indicate it's likely they do... that's ok... but the evidence doesn't support that position

So once again - all of this doesn't mean Wolves won't rest or rotate in the league to prioritise the FA Cup, no-one can guarantee that, but the available evidence just doesn't support that conclusion

But I am glad at least that you have agreed that it's a myth that Wolves rest players before or after an FA Cup tie 😉

what do we think of bilva/dilva as our 3rd city asset over a defender?

          could be a nice differential

I'm really stuck on my defence/keeper.

I guess I'm torn between the security of keepers like Ederson, Kepa, De Gea, over the possible uncertainty of Laporte, Luiz, and Lindelof. Also wanting three City attackers removes them as a defensive option.

None of the budget keepers have two good, or even good and average games,

Are the likes of Guita/Foster/Patricio certain to play twice?

...does anyone have at least one defender, or goal keeper they think is an absolute must have for GW32?

DdG and Lindelof represent equal security to me (read: none). I'm going Llloris in goal and Young in defense for possible attacking returns.

Surely De Gea is 100% nailed for both league games? Why would he not be?
I don't fancy Lloris to keep a clean sheet against Liverpool, and again Spurs defenders are likely to rotate, well the wing backs anyway.
Young is a brave pick too, thought he was quite pricey?
              Thanks for the reply.

Oh sorry, thought you meant security, as in security of starts.
I'd be confident of at least one CS for United with the fixtures they have.

I think Doherty may well be in that category - a lot could get caught out by FHitting him out, then he starts both games & mananges a couple of attacking returns & an odd CS etc

Ederson must have for me in goal. Crystal palace double and one of them at home to Hud makes at least one DEF a must for me. Chelsea defender a good option due to the fixtures and I like Duffy for his home fixture and goal threat.

I'm currently on a triple City attack, so can't get Ederson unfortunately, and no one else in B.Silva price bracket is tempting enough - would be looking at Lingard, or Martial.

Duffy, Luiz, and Lindelof is my current selection, but just not convinced it's the best one. - With Patricio.

i think luiz is the only must have, laporte if not going triple attack with one of the silvas or sane is also a great option, one of palace might be good as budget option- awb/schlup/guaita.
if going budget gk i would go with guaita and then double up on chelsea in defense (emerson or azpil alongside luiz).

            question: why is lindelof uncertain?

            1. HamezMace
              • 9 Years

I'm concerned about Guaita, he seems to sometimes get dropped for no apparent reason...unless you know? Keepers don't really need to be 'rested', so I find it strange that he sometimes just doesn't play.
If I go with Palace I'm more tempted by Schlupp, or AWB fror attacking/baps returns.

I'm not sure Lindelof is uncertain, seemingly he, and Smalling are the preferred pairing, but United do have a wealth of central defenders who are all of equal quality.

Don't think there are any "must haves" aside from premiums, but my enabler is Schlupp. If you want more nailed: AWB/Tomkins.

Pretty much nailed yeah but not 100%. I'd just make sure you cover Chelsea & City defence: Laporte maybe?

I'd like City defence, but currently I've gone with B.Silva, with the other two attackers.
I can't see another option than Silva for the price - Lingard, Martial, just don't do it for me.
I have Luiz currently, but again, just not sure.

Thinking about him - weirdly depends on Soton for me. TV not that strong, so if I can't get two Southampton enablers with 2 games, I don't think I can afford Kane....

But, as others have mentioned, it might not be as big of a deal as in previous season's DGWs to not have Kane as there are other captain options, and he isn't that highly owned.

So possibly a Son/Alli route into the attack could be worthwhile. Spurs are just weird ATM though, and won't have played for 3 weeks before they line up at Anfield.

I don't think you can make a FH team without having Aguero, Sterling, Pogba, Hazard, Kane + Ederson due to the double fixtures. I've not seen one other team with 2x Palace defence and not that many have Duffy. The Majority have triple UTD (1x DEF + 2 attack). Also seeing a lot of Kepa/Luiz.

still undecided about whether to use fh or tc this gw. city fixtures are SO good a tc on aguero/sterling could even outscore the 75 points from sanchez a couple of seasons ago. but in order to do so i'd need to take a couple of hits and have players like higuain (poor form) or jimmy (rotation worry) in my team. really not sure. anyone else still considering both options ? thanks

Currently decided on 10 of my 11 FH players, but stuck on the 11th man. Can be a 5.1m defender, 5.5m midfielder or 5.8m forward.

          Can't go Kanté: triple Chelsea.
Would go JWP: probably no DGW.
          Watford/Wolves I fear rotation.
          Don't fancy United defensively.

pick the one you think will be bigger differential, both equally good picks

          Thoughts on this -4 team?
Will make 2 transfers: Anderson > Son and Robertson > Laporte, to give me the following team:

          Patricio
          Azpilicueta AWB Laporte
Pogba Hazard Sterling (TC) Pedro Son
          Aguero Rashford

          Boruc Doherty Pereira Success

          Any suggestions/comments to proposed transfers?

Pretty nice, tempted to actually start Doherty over Pedro

good shout...not too sure about double Wolves defense though, and rotation (but that counts for Pedro as well I guess)

Schlupp nailed? Fancy to have a CRY defender and he's attacking

Think so - he’s very much a Roy favourite and very Oop.

The safer if more expensive option is PvA who is more or less guaranteed two games as he has no easy replacement whereas Palace do have options in midfield for rotation

Played 90 minutes in the last six OOP, one goal, three assists and a clean sheet. Looks pretty decent to me with HUD next.

          Alli (close but differential value)
          Bat
          Mili (rotation) (prefer Townsend)

Townsend is 10x more prone to rotation than Mili lol.

Technical question, apologies for noob-ish-ness, I can't remember from last season and can't find the info anywhere.... Once I activate Free Hit and confirm the transfers, can I then keep fiddling around with the team (transferring in and out unlimited times) until the GW32 deadline, same as when you play a Wildcard, or prior to GW1?

          Your ideas on this one?

          Kepa
          Laporte/Lindelof/Schlupp
          Hazard/Sterling/Pogba/Deulofeu
          Kun/Kane/Zaha

Or would you have some Wolves or Rashford in?

Iffy about Zaha (injury) and Deulofeu (Man Utd away). Not sure on your transfer/ITB/chip situation, but Jota and Rashford (C. Wilson?) could be worth thinking about
