Title-chasers expected to headline Gameweek 38 captaincy debate

The title-chasing players at Manchester City and Liverpool are expected to be the front-runners for the final captain debate of the season.

The 2018/19 campaign comes to a close with Gameweek 38 on Sunday afternoon, with the destiny of the Premier League trophy virtually the only thing left to be decided.

Second-placed Liverpool have been a devastating attacking force at Anfield this year, which should see some interest in options such as Sadio Mané (£10.2m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.3m).

The Senegalese international may have an advantage given that he has a much more reliable record at home over a longer period, scoring 12 goals in his last 11 Premier League matches in front of his own fans.

Furthermore, he is currently completely fit while Salah has been placed in concussion protocol.

Jurgen Klopp has said that at this stage he is confident the Egyptian will play a part in Gameweek 38, but he will have missed training for most of the week – so it will be interesting to see how much of a party his yellow flag plays in the captain poll.

The vote is now live on our website and can be participated in either in the embedded section at the bottom of this article or in the sidebar.

Meanwhile, Manchester City face an appealing trip to Brighton on Sunday, knowing that a win will secure a second consecutive Premier League title.

The Seagulls have conceded nine goals in their last four at home, while Manchester City have scored at least twice in each of their last four on the road.

Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) may prove to be the most popular of the Citizens options given he has attacking returns in two of his last three away trips.

Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero (£11.9m), who recorded his first blank in a home Premier League start this season on Monday night, will also be considered. He has two goals in his last four on the road as well.

However, with Manchester City’s attack slowing down in favour of their defensive solidity, maybe Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m) will prove the most popular candidate.

Six clean sheets in his last seven Premier League outings has helped the centre-back become a seriously reliable option, especially with two attacking returns thrown in for good measure.

In fact, since the turn of the year, Laporte has posted a better points-per-game (6.79) than both Sterling (6.69) and Aguero (6.44).

Whether Liverpool defensive assets are strongly considered may depend on what Fantasy managers believe they can expect from Wolves’ attackers.

Raúl Jiménez (£7.0m) has been particularly effective against the top six this season although Wolves have not been in such impressive form away from Molineux in recent months.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.7m) has been a hugely exciting option in recent weeks, stringing together consecutive scores of eight, 11, 10 and 10 points over the last four Gameweeks.

Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk (£6.7m) has two attacking returns in that time, as well as benefitting from Liverpool’s three clean sheets.

The most reliable of them all from a long-term perspective this season has been Andrew Robertson (£6.8m), who assisted twice in the 5-0 win over Huddersfield.

However, with mini-leagues and overall ranking now the main focus of most managers, it is possible that we may see some bespoke captaincy decisions.

Those looking for differentials on the main players may have to roll the dice given the typically unpredictable nature of Gameweek 38.

Despite a blank against Manchester City on Monday night, Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) still has five goals and an assist in his last four home matches.

Coming to the King Power Stadium on the final day of the season are Chelsea, who have wrapped up Champions League qualification and are without a clean sheet on the road since Gameweek 20.

Huddersfield have been poor on their travels too with 15 goals conceded in their last four away matches.

That may cause some to consider their Southampton options for Gameweek 38, Nathan Redmond (£5.4m) the most likely.

He may have been rested for the trip to West Ham, but given the impact he made when he took to the pitch, he should return to the side on Sunday.

Crucially, Redmond has attacking returns in each of his last three home matches against teams outside the top six.

How would you improve this lot with 1FT and 0.6ITB? Taking a hit would get me Salah for Hazard(double pool att instead of def).
    Rico
    Robbo VVD Laporte
    Sterling Hazard Mane Redmond
    Aguero Zaha Long
    (Guaita Valery Kelly Camarasa).

Would downgrade VVD and Salah instead of Pogba.
Would play 343 or 352 for final fixture(maximise attacking potential).

Good point.. don't see any value in the midfield though. I'd like Deulofeu, but he's a rotation threat. Tielemans plays Chelsea and Redmond could get benched as well.

Any 5.1 def worth getting for a hit? (Shaw probably the main prospect)
Have TAA and Robertson, but also Doherty, Duffy and Dunk, who are probable 1 or 0 pointers this GW.

Low ceiling, not very interesting captain. CS is likely (maybe bonus) but anything else is fortunate TBH.

      1. VanDijksToWatchOutFor
        • 6 Years
        4 years, 10 months ago

Why does a captain need to be interesting? Brighton surely won't score and he keeps bringing home the bonus even when he doesn't get an attacking return.

          • 7 Years

You can pick whoever you want. Me personally I want to see a big upside from my captain. The potential for a double digit haul etc. Brighton are unlikely to score but it’s not guaranteed they won’t.

            • 6 Years
            4 years, 10 months ago

That's fair. And I agree that high ceilings are often the way to go. Guess it's a symptom of wanting to rank protect and take a relatively safe 6

They could easily score (especially set piece) if City get into celebration mode. The probability of him hitting 6 with his lower ceiling, compared with the probability of others scoring, is why it's generally frowned upon. And come on...it's the last day of the season!

Tottenham have made an appeal of wrongful dismissal against Heung-Min Son’s red card received at Bournemouth on Saturday, Sky Sports News understands.

Glad I haven't sold him yet.

Surely he's got no chance-he pushed the guy over and the ref saw it as a red-what's to over turn?

    Salah, Son, Pogba, JWP
    Aguero, Jiminez, Zaha
    Foster, Jota, Duffy, Dunk

Son to David Silva/Bernardo/other? If Salah out then him to Sterling and play Jota, and hope for a goal fest.

I won’t unless he is out, and then I need to play triple Wolves. Otherwise looking at Son to someone.

Who is the best option to captain this GW?

Don't think City and Liverpool will score heavily.

    Laporte?
    Or someone else like Redmond?

Just outside of 10k so should I take a risk or play safe?

Not wild about those moves. Newcastle pretty toothless away and Chelsea could get beat too.

    GW38: 2 FT 0.5 ITB

Lets say first transfer is Son to Pogba...
What is th second you would make mates?
Jimenez or Gray to be sold to?
or maybe Doherty to TAA and play 4-4-2?

    Lloris
    Laporte Robbo Valery
    Sterling Son* Redmond Mane
    Aguero Jimenez Gray

    Subs: Foster, Jota, Doherty, Duffy

TAA could be good. Wait till after Barca if you can though.

Anyone know how to quickly find out how many players are in the "USA" mini league? Currently sitting at 805 and was wondering how many players in the US. Cheers.

Click on the USA global league. Go to the next page. Change Page=2 to Page=n where n is a large number. Then repeat with different values of n until you reach a page with 1 to 50 teams on it but no Next box.
Use binary chops. For example, if you think there might be about 100 pages but the actual final page is 167 then you could try n=100, 200, 150, 175, 162, 170, 166, 168, 167.

Would really appreciate advice going into the final GW. So, I’m 10pts behind the leader in my ML. Team is:

    Foster
    TAA VVD Valery
    Raz Jota Eriksen Mane Redmond
    Jiménez Lacazette
    Subs: Ryan, Boly, Gray
    1FT, 3.3m itb

    Leader has
    Patricio
    Doherty Shaw Robbo Bednarek
    Salah Mané Fraser Sterling
    Jiménez King
    Subs: Rondón, Cathcart

What are the best moves (-4 max) to catch him?

Completely lost for ideas so any help is appreciated!

Eriksen to CP mid (Mili or Townsend) and Gray to Vardy?

Like the Vardy shout, Laca to Aguero or too much at stake in city game?

Your teams are different enough that you could catch him with no moves, just focus on your weakest link and make 1 move ignoring his team.

Cannot see that there is any reason for an appeal

Maybe not but the appeal is in by all accounts and it might save an unnecessary transfer if it was by any chance overturned. So I'd like to wait and see before deciding on transfers. Of course, it's useless having Son if the red card stands.
