Captains

Title-chasers expected to headline Gameweek 38 captaincy debate

The title-chasing players at Manchester City and Liverpool are expected to be the front-runners for the final captain debate of the season.

The 2018/19 campaign comes to a close with Gameweek 38 on Sunday afternoon, with the destiny of the Premier League trophy virtually the only thing left to be decided.

Second-placed Liverpool have been a devastating attacking force at Anfield this year, which should see some interest in options such as Sadio Mané (£10.2m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.3m).

The Senegalese international may have an advantage given that he has a much more reliable record at home over a longer period, scoring 12 goals in his last 11 Premier League matches in front of his own fans.

Furthermore, he is currently completely fit while Salah has been placed in concussion protocol.

Jurgen Klopp has said that at this stage he is confident the Egyptian will play a part in Gameweek 38, but he will have missed training for most of the week – so it will be interesting to see how much of a party his yellow flag plays in the captain poll.

The vote is now live on our website and can be participated in either in the embedded section at the bottom of this article or in the sidebar.

Meanwhile, Manchester City face an appealing trip to Brighton on Sunday, knowing that a win will secure a second consecutive Premier League title.

The Seagulls have conceded nine goals in their last four at home, while Manchester City have scored at least twice in each of their last four on the road.

Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) may prove to be the most popular of the Citizens options given he has attacking returns in two of his last three away trips.

Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero (£11.9m), who recorded his first blank in a home Premier League start this season on Monday night, will also be considered. He has two goals in his last four on the road as well.

However, with Manchester City’s attack slowing down in favour of their defensive solidity, maybe Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m) will prove the most popular candidate.

Six clean sheets in his last seven Premier League outings has helped the centre-back become a seriously reliable option, especially with two attacking returns thrown in for good measure.

In fact, since the turn of the year, Laporte has posted a better points-per-game (6.79) than both Sterling (6.69) and Aguero (6.44).

Whether Liverpool defensive assets are strongly considered may depend on what Fantasy managers believe they can expect from Wolves’ attackers.

Raúl Jiménez (£7.0m) has been particularly effective against the top six this season although Wolves have not been in such impressive form away from Molineux in recent months.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.7m) has been a hugely exciting option in recent weeks, stringing together consecutive scores of eight, 11, 10 and 10 points over the last four Gameweeks.

Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk (£6.7m) has two attacking returns in that time, as well as benefitting from Liverpool’s three clean sheets.

The most reliable of them all from a long-term perspective this season has been Andrew Robertson (£6.8m), who assisted twice in the 5-0 win over Huddersfield.

However, with mini-leagues and overall ranking now the main focus of most managers, it is possible that we may see some bespoke captaincy decisions.

Those looking for differentials on the main players may have to roll the dice given the typically unpredictable nature of Gameweek 38.

Despite a blank against Manchester City on Monday night, Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) still has five goals and an assist in his last four home matches.

Coming to the King Power Stadium on the final day of the season are Chelsea, who have wrapped up Champions League qualification and are without a clean sheet on the road since Gameweek 20.

Huddersfield have been poor on their travels too with 15 goals conceded in their last four away matches.

That may cause some to consider their Southampton options for Gameweek 38, Nathan Redmond (£5.4m) the most likely.

He may have been rested for the trip to West Ham, but given the impact he made when he took to the pitch, he should return to the side on Sunday.

Crucially, Redmond has attacking returns in each of his last three home matches against teams outside the top six.

What to do here with 2 FT and .02 ITB?

    Gunn, Guita
    Robertson, Shaw, AWB, Bednarek, Duffy
    Salah, Mane, Son, Pogba, Hoijberg
    Aguero, Jiminez, Vardy

What was your major mistake (if any) this season?

Mine was bad Captains (trying to be too clever) and not owning Jimmy enough (only owned since DWG)

      Following captain poll most weeks.
      Mainly choosing Aguero over Sterling.
Tinkering with my team and making unnecessary transfers when I was doing well.

      Almost never owned Mane.

Looked at Jimis stats and historical record after around 12 gws and concluded its not sustainable. Never got him in.

Deviated from my original plan of having a big defense because a lot of the players I considered essential at the start (tripps, Alonso) turned bad. Should have stuck with the strategy with different players.

Not using my second WC early.

I did quite nicely but it’s only working for 3/4 games and BB wasn’t near worth it. WC in 20/1 could have set me up for 7/8 matches.

(Always prepared to take a hit or two so the DGWs were always navigable)

    TAA VVD Valery
    Raz Jota Eriksen Mane Redmond
    Jiménez Lacazette
    Subs: Ryan, Boly, Gray
    1FT, 3.3m itb

    Leader has
    Patricio
    Doherty Shaw Robbo Bednarek
    Salah Mané Fraser Sterling

I read on here recently that the last game week matches can be unpredictable with lots of goals scored. It’s my first season playing after being an FPL widow for many years, so am not sure how true this is. Which teams would you expect to score a lot of goals this GW? Need to catch up on 7 points to beat my husband! So looking for a couple of differentials! Thanks.

Very close in some important moneyleagues. Currently ranked as 735 overall and looking to get my best ever finish. But how should I approach the last GW with this team?

    Lloris
    Doherty - Laporte - Kolasinac
    Mane - Deulofeu - Sterling - Jota
    Jimenez - Agüero - Lacazette

    Bench: Foster, Son, Duffy, Dunk.

    2FT and 0.4M ITB.

What should I do here? A hit seems stupid before the last GW, but not happy to play any of the Wolves-guys against Liverpool, and the bench is not very helpful.

What would you do in this spot?

Lose Laca and Son, bench one of the Wolves' attackers (Jota?) Making bold moves with the FTs. I was top 1000 last year and big regret is how boringly I played GW 38.

I don't know about selling Laca. Obviously Son has to go, but the 10 million dollar question is...to whom? I think that's what we're all struggling with. I'm currently thinking Moura might be the obvious choice.

For this player's choices, I think it would be interesting to see what Vardy does. Could they afford Vardy and Moura for Jimenez and Son?

    Wilson Aguero
    Ryan Jimenez* Kolasinac Dunk

    Last FT
    0.9 ITB

    A) Son -> Sane/Dilva/Bilva/Moura
    B) Son + Jimenez -> Sterling (-4)
    C) Son + Jimenez -> Laca/Auba (-4)
    D) Jimenez -> Zaha/Rashford/Arnie

    Which option seems best?

    Dilemma

My GKs are Hamer & Boruc, so there is a good chance neither will play GW38. I have 2 FTs. Should I...

Prioritise a GK with one of the FTs or do Hazard & Son > Sterling & B Silva

I am top of my ML by 1pt to 2nd and 7pts to 3rd, so nothing in it, but my rivals have Sterling so I am worried that could be what costs me the title. I am happy with the rest of my team.

Can't do it that way no funds, would have to take a hit and do 3 transfers which I don't really want to do.

    A: Start Jimenez or Kola
    B: Jiménez > any forward up to 8m (-4)

Bench would be one of Jiménez/kola, Doherty, Gray

No. Martial might actually score some points. Just do Son
