Learning from the mistakes of a dreadful FPL season

It’s hard to believe Gameweek 38 is upon us already. It’s going to be a long summer without FPL.

For most, the season ending is a negative, but for me, it will be a relief.

When those final whistles blow on Sunday evening, it will feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. The nightmare will be over.

In over 10 seasons, this has been my worst by a long distance. I’ve been unlucky in many ways but there have been plenty of bad decisions too. Bad luck alone doesn’t get you a poor rank.

Not doing enough tinkering/research ahead of Gameweek 1 led to a poor start to the campaign from which I never recovered.

Chasing the pack was a new position for me to be in and it didn’t suit my patient style of play.

Selling players at the wrong time occurred too often, Callum Wilson (£6.8m) early in the season when he wasn’t scoring goals but had good underlying statistics and good fixtures is a prime example of that.

Shipping Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) just before the festive fixtures was another.

In hindsight, it was poor decision-making. I’ve had most of the right players this season, just at the wrong times.

The biggest reason for my poor season is overthinking things and spending way too much time on FPL.

Anyone who plays the game seriously often overthinks every move but when you work full-time in the field and spend 9am – 5pm, Monday-Friday every week discussing FPL with other managers, it clouds your judgement.

When it came to making my own transfers on a Friday night, my head was usually fried. Transfers should only ever be made with a clear head.

To combat this next season, I intend to scale back on how much time I spend on Twitter/Reddit/listening to podcasts etc. and spend more time focusing on my own team/strategy.

With all the great content available to fantasy managers nowadays, the biggest challenge is managing yourself.

Playing your own game has never been harder.

Reading/listening/watching too much content can have a negative impact on your season. Trust yourself.

Captaincy picks have let me down big time this season. This is the one aspect I’m most determined to improve on in 2019/20.

I’ve had roughly 15 blanks from 37 captains which just isn’t good enough. If you are not consistent with the captaincy, chances are you will struggle.

Avoiding bandwagons is another thing I want to improve on next season which has been a problem this year.

Players like Ross Barkley (£5.0m), Theo Walcott (£5.9m), Anthony Knockaert (£5.2m) and Roberto Pereyra (£5.9m) all found their way into my squad at some point. These are the types of players I’ve typically avoided in previous seasons.

I want to avoid injury-prone players next season too. Marko Arnautovic (£6.7m) and Danny Ings (£5.4m) caused me problems this season for example.

Bandwagons and injury-prone players usually result in you having to waste a transfer to get rid of them again down the line. We talk about fighting fires in FPL, when you buy a player like Arnie, it’s like going to the shop and buying matches, firelighters and kindling. You are looking for trouble.

I managed to go ten years without captaining a defender, then I gave Shane Duffy (£4.7m) the armband for his Double Gameweek. I plan to go another ten years now without falling into the same trap again.

The one and only time I made an early transfer this season it burned me. Marcos Alonso (£6.2m) was shipped for Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.7m) on a Sunday night only for news to break on the Tuesday that TAA was injured.

My tried and trusted strategy of waiting until after all the press conferences before making moves will be a staple in my strategy for next season.

I’m relishing the challenge of coming back stronger next season and hopefully bouncing back from a testing season in style. Good luck all in Gameweek 38 and enjoy the summer break. We all need one!

    What is the best strategy for a final gw if I'm 3 points behind my rival?
    1. get one of his key differentials
    1a. Son-> Pogba
    1b. Son Jimmi-> Sterling Long for -4

    2. play my own game and hope for the best
    2a. Son->Bilva/mili
    2b. Jimmi-> Zaha

    3. Mix of 1 and 2: doherty->laporte and play 4defs

    His team:
    Ederson
    AWB-Laporte-Robbo (Kola doherty)
    pogba-sterling-fraser-jota (tielemans)
    Rashford-Jimmi-Vardy

    My team:
    Foster
    TAA-Shaw-Valery (Doherty Duffy)
    Mane-Salah-Jota-Redmond (Son)
    Aguero-Wilson-Jimmi

    Final gameweek is normally full of goals...but is playing a back 4 still a good option? Trent, Valery, Laporte and Kompany

      Decent shouts for all of those you’ve listed so I wouldn’t be worried. Valery obviously could be benched if you have an attacker worth playing.

    As the season is drawing to a close, I suspect FFS will look to improve their site during the off season and ask us for suggestions on how they can do this hopefully.

    One suggestion I have is that there should be some sort of internal rating system that we can each individually apply to posters on here. With so many people on the site nowadays it’s hard to remember who’s a troll and who’s talked sense in the past. I want to remember who I think it worth listening too and who’s advice I take more with a pinch of salt.

    The rating would only show to us individually, so only I would see that for example Joe Bloggs I’ve rated 3 out of 10 and John Smith I’ve rated 9 out of 10. So no offence would be caused.

    It’s a bit like the system poker sites use so you can identify sharks, fish and rocks for future games etc.

        I tend to object to this idea, based on the fact that you should judge people on their advice provided rather than history or current OR. That being said, if all your interested is whether a high HoF manager replies A or B, then I can see how that could help - not of much interest to me though.

        Regarding Smurf's post, I'll pass it along to Geoff and I'll see what his thoughts are - I'm sure there would be plenty of technical issues that would crop up with something like this, but hopefully we can get something?

          agree on the rank thing, not something i judge by really on its own and quite discriminatory if you ignore someones advice purely on their current rank

          Like I say, it’s not something that should necessarily be made public so then it avoids negativity. But there’s not a lot you lot can do on here to stop the growing flow of trolls. So it would be nice for us to be able to just highlight them ourselves internally.

          Also when I see someone posting who makes a lot of sense and is offering good advice, is like to remember this for their future posts but most of the time I forget as it’s hard to remember everyone’s user names.

            I understand how hard it can be to remember, I have to try keep track which of you are nice (fortunately most) and which of you have to keep an eye on 😉

            I think a lot of the negative posters can be spotted from a mile off and therefore just avoid them, but I get that it shouldn't really be the case that you have to put up with them!

            Like I say, not a huge amount I can say on this because I have precisely zero knowledge on this, but passed it along to Geoff

            Thanks for your suggestions though, I'm sure there will be a big suggestions HT early into the summer, so I'd recommend putting it up there too, just in case! 🙂

          Fair comment. I was speaking more generally about whether you have been advised by a manager who replies reliably to comments, and with a history of playing seriously as opposed to a troll

      Yeah, not a bad idea. It could also be something more subtle, where an upvote gives a person a higher ranking in your internal ranking system and we could have downvotes (that maybe aren't visible on site, or maybe are) that would lower people's rank on your system. Those ranks could then sort people's comments on site, helping to get the comments and users you want to see near the top.

      I'll give this some thought.

      And you're right, I'll be doing a HT asking for more advice after the season is done, so early next week

      One other thing I'd add is that the voting does that in a general way, for all users.

      Every upvote a user receives gives them one more 'Reputation' point in our backend system; that isn't visible to most, including mods. That then influences how powerful that users upvotes are in the future.

      So if there are two comments on site, one upvoted by a user with 100 Reputation and one upvoted by a user who has never recieved an upvote, the comment upvoted by the user with 100 shows up in Sort By Ranking before the other comment. In this way, time on site and quality comments leads to better content sorting on Sort By Ranking.

      That depends on people upvoting often of course, and using the Sort By Ranking filter. Both of which I strongly encourage

    "It’s hard to believe Gameweek 38 is upon us already".....Really?.....It feels like the longest season in history. I'll be glad to see the end of it.

        How likely will Shaw be dropped after his poor performance against Huddersfield? I am considering Lindelöf & Young as likely replacement.

        Is the general consensus that Shane Long will play this Sunday? Got two free transfers and have exact money for:

        Son + Jimmy > Mane + Long

        Lloris - (Foster)
        TAA - Cathcart - Valery - (Doherty) - (Dunk)
        Salah - Sterling - Son* - Redmond - Pogba
        Aguerooo - Jimmy* - (Llorente)

        *Mane
        *Long

        Got 0.0 ITB after planned transfer so need to move tonight to avoid Mane's price hike.

        Cheers!

          Squad almost the same as mine and I'm considering the same move.

          Just put off by triple Southampton.

          Vardy and Fraser is my other option.

        To be fair 533 captain points is by no means a disaster...
