Can De Bruyne offer better value than Sterling or Aguero in Man City attack?

With Manchester City sitting top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1 to 11, many Fantasy Premier League managers will be eyeing up at least one attacking option from Pep Guardiola’s side.

Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero (both £12.0m) will again be popular choices but much-anticipated price rises mean that only Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is a more expensive FPL asset than the premium City pair in 2019/20.

Price hikes for other high-achieving players, meanwhile, have left FPL managers scrabbling around for cost-effective alternatives elsewhere.

Bernardo Silva (£8.0m) and David Silva (£7.5m) may appeal at the top-end of the mid-price bracket, with the Portugal international in particular being one of City’s more secure starters (if there is such a thing) given the high esteem in which Guardiola holds him.

Gifted as they are, the cheaper City midfielders didn’t fully convince as reliable Fantasy options last season.

Twelve FPL midfielders had better points-per-match averages than the pair (4.3), with Sterling (6.9) top for that statistic among outfield Premier League players.

The two Silvas have only scored two league goals between them in 2019.

Question marks over the game-time and futures of wingers Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) and Leroy Sane (£9.5m) also persist.

The return to fitness of Kevin De Bruyne (£9.5m) intrigues, then, especially as the Belgian’s starting price has dropped below the £10.0m mark for the first time since his Chelsea days.

De Bruyne had an injury-ravaged 2018/19 and played less than 1,000 minutes, having had five separate spells on the sidelines.

A total of five attacking returns was a meagre haul but 21 goals and 49 assists in his previous three campaigns combined underscore what he is capable of when fit and firing.

Given that he is a full £2.5m cheaper than Sterling and Aguero, we’ll look at De Bruyne’s credentials for 2019/20 compared to the other City options around him – in particular, the two more expensive attackers.

it's actually very easy to pick a team you like if you don't have Salah AND Sterling...but do you REALLY like it without both of them!?

    Heaton (4.0)
    TAA VVD Mendy Digne (Zinchenko)
    Salah Siggy Zaha (Jorginho Dendoncker)
    Vardy Wilson King

At the moment I'm trying to live without Salah ( & Mane).
Kane & Sterling are my planned two big-hitters.

yeah any of them can fire big over a short period, long term the scoring system seems to favour Salah and Sterling but having both does make it a little more challenging fund-wise

If you're happy captaining Salah every game, then you aren't missing any great value from Sterling. Those two are only worth their price if you captain them. Personally I'd want a choice. I can see myself picking Sterling(C) in GWs 3 & 4.

I'm thinking (in the team above) that if you only have 2 others from Liverpool and 2 from City then you can easily just switch between Salah and Sterling (captaining the one you have) and the rest of your team can be pretty nice

KdB Vardy Kane = Mo Sterling fodder as there’s nothing in that price range

I think sterling is so expensive
Nowhere near as essential as salah
A fit and in form kdb can match his points (having both is an option for some managers too)
Only thing is, sterling is a better captaincy option than kdb
And I don't trust myself, will I sell 12m midfielder after 2-3 blanks?
Will kdb get injured or pep plays him aa CM?
Will bernardo be a better value than both? His CL returns were much better than PL
    May do it here too.

You are making a number of assumptions there -
      1) Salah will outperform Mane in the opening fixtures.
      2) KDB will be thrown back in immediately and click into gear straight away

I think give the opening fixtures there will not be much between Mane and Salah (as thier price finally indicates)
Plus I think Pep will be careful with KDB given his long lay off so he just does not offer that security that Sterling gives.
I have decided to wait on KDB until he starts getting consistent gametime and showing his old swagger.

My plan is to get KDB instead of Sterling later on when I see evidence of that.
Then use the cash to move towards Chelsea/Spurs players gw4/5 ish Moura-Willian etc.

I could see the rationale (as in considering it myself) for Salah gw1-3 > sterling g4-10+. Equally, I think bernardo/sterling/kdb isn't out of the question for those plumb attacking fixtures from gw4 especially if defensive places aren't settled, so I think there is a fair amount of sense in a pre gw4 wildcard to take account of fixture shift and enough time to assess chelsea/Man utd/West ham options etc and jump on early

I read on this site that after a report into number of penalties before and after VAR in leagues where it has already been implemented, there were no significant differences in the number of penalties awarded.

However, the new rule on handball intentional or not could certainly be more rewarding to penalty takers than VAR.

I think I prefer A because it is easier to downgrade Sterling to anyone else. And there are lot of options you can replace Maddison with.

Vardy is just an awkward price and you are kind of stuck with him, and the options below his price would probably only be the Wolves lads, West Ham or Man United at the moment.
Keep and eye on Giroud though preseason.

          Sirgurdsson-Maddison-Mane-Sterling-(McGinn)

          King (Arnautovic-Wickam)

I can see the Zaha logic but the transfer rumours put me off.

De Bruyne may well be slightly better value than Sterling and Aguero, but that's still not great value. I'd argue you aren't looking at value at that price range, you're looking for captains, and I'm unconvinced KDB is one. If you want a player for value, there are far better options out there than KDB. If you want a player for captaincy, then few can match Sterling and Aguero.

this is exactly my thoughts. If i go for KDB I am basically perma-captaining Salah and if I want another 11m+ premium, getting them in with KDB there is harder. I like to have the option for flexibility at the start of the game

What role does KDB play in that team?

He's not giving a good return of points per million, and he's not a captaincy option. So what's he doing there?

I think 0.55 its pretty good value, the comprasion they make in this article looks that he isnt so far away from sterling and aguero

      That’s the rub

I’m currently on Kane Vardy KdB with extra Laca over Sterling and Mo.

Kane looks very captainable in the odd weeks but the even weeks may see me struggling. Those are the ones you want City. May yet trade Laca in for Arnie say and go Sterling over KdB

Just made the switch. I now have a front 5 of

        Sterling Zaha
        Vardy Kane King

With the option of Fraser over Zaha. That gives home captain options in first 8 (pre WC)

Kane (odd weeks) Villa Newcastle Palace Soton

Sterling (even weeks) Spurs Brighton Watford Wolves

Thank you to everyone who voted in the Members article poll. As you can see, the KDB one was the winner. That means the Members article schedule will look like this over the coming days:

Saturday June 29: Digne vs Coleman
Sunday June 30: Is Kane worth the cash at £11.0m?
Monday July 1: Richarlison vs Sigurdsson at £8.0m

We are also giving you guys the chance to commission some of next week's Members articles. Suggest some ideas below and we'll see what we can put together. We've already made a start on the next batch after yesterday's all-nighter so there may even be some overlap! Let us know!

I like the Rich vs Siggy idea but I feel the question is, is Siggy worth an extra 1m over a bunch of 7m players (Zaha, Maddison etc)?

I asked for Siggy v Richarlison because they’re the same price.

Siggy on pens v Rich often OOP.

They also have arguably the easiest opening 10 fixtures.

I'm interested in the Bournemouth attack given their kind first 6-8 fixtures & they feature in a lot of teams posted here. An article on the best value pick for the Cherries could be an interesting idea.

Thanks for all the hard work over the last few days.

it really is Torres; every draft team I plan has had 6 and ends up not-so-bad until the 15th choice, always a 4.5 forward...

I think this pre-season will be one of the dullest in FPL terms. No interest in Arsenal, United and Chelsea, Kane only viable Spurs option and a lack of exciting budget options. Nearly every team will feature three expensive LIV/MCI defenders, the midfield template of Salah/Sterling/Zaha/Siggy is quickly emerging and the only real difference for the experienced managers will be sacrificing Sterling or Salah for Kane or not.

It suits me quite well. A dull start of the season is usually good news for experienced managers.

I am interested in Chelsea and which players will end up in the final squad. United as well, Pogba and Rashford might become options maybe, with United having a pretty easy fixture schedule until end of the year

Yeah, I'm sure options from Chelsea and United will emerge. I just don't think there's much interest in them from GW1. I'm keeping an eye on Hudson-Odoi, Loftus Cheek, James, Pogba and Rashford. But I think they'll be more relevant on a GW4 WC than from the go.

Question is, can you fit Salah, Sterling and Kane..

  27. tafrère

Josh King and Diogo Jota are good cheap forwards imo. 6.5 is what you want to go along with one big hitter in attack (Kane, Kun or Aubam). Vardy, Wilson and Jimenez are a bit too pricy, and I can see King and Jota at least match them. Calvert-Lewin is one to monitor during the pre-season too.

In midfield you'd have to chose between one of Salah, Sterling and Mané imo. You can go with two of them, but that'll mean going very very cheap in attack, don't think it's safe to start the season with an unbalanced team. What I noticed too, is the lack of interesting players in midfield under the 7.0 mark. That's why I will probably go for a double pivot, with two 4.5 mids (Dendoncker and Hayden for now).

4-3-3 looks like the formation I want for GW1. Could look like that :

    Heaton
    TAA Van Dijk Digne Trippier
    Salah KDB Zaha
    Kane Jota King

Could Trippier become a city defender? Perhaps by moving Digne to Coleman. Just an idea as its missing cover from one of the best defenses in the league
