Is it worth paying extra to have Jiménez over Jota?

Fantasy Premier League managers may have a tough decision when considering Wolves’ attacking options in 2018/19.

A price hike for Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) has put clear daylight between him and colleague Diogo Jota (£6.5m).

Despite the latter’s switch from midfield to the forward department, his offer of a £1.0m saving is certainly enticing.

In this latest members article, requested by readers on site and social media, we will compare Wolves’ two central strikers to assess which is the better option for our Fantasy teams.

As this uses data taken from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for 2019/20 can access the bulk of the article.

Selecting the right period for comparison

Wolves changed their formation to a 3-5-2 in Gameweek 15.

On the surface, it’s hard to look past Jiménez given that he outscored Jota across the 2018/19 season.

The Mexican recorded a final total of 181 points compared his Portuguese colleague’s 139.

That is probably why Jiménez is, by a long way, the more popular of the two following the release of the 2019/20 game.

In fact, currently sat in 42.7% the former Benfica man is the most fashionable asset in any position.

Obviously, his price means that auto-pick selections will still be influencing that figure, and it has dropped slightly from the 43.5% he was at on July 5.

However, to suggest either his 2018/19 score or early 2019/20 popularity are cause to back Jiménez over Jota would be somewhat naïve.

Double Everton defence is the kind of thing I see when I go back to my GW1 team at the end of the season and wonder what on earth I was thinking

Still not conviced Digne being good pick for 6.0. He is no Baines after all.

Hehe. But should they continue in the same vein defensively as they finished last season, you will most likely be patting yourself on the back, telling yourself what a soothsayer you are.

How she looking for a fort draft, I know the bench isn’t the best but I’m willing to take a punt on it, anyone advice is welcome.

    Schmeichel
    Wan B Robertson Laporte VVD
    Maddison Sterling Zaha KDB Neves
    Kane

I’m all for going light on the bench, but that is too weak, you’re gonna need one playing option. I’d downgrade AWB, which then means you can upgrade one of your subs.

541 is risky and paying .5 extra instead of 4.0 fodder is painful but I think I prefer 4.5 + 5.5 defender
      Over 4.0 and 6.0 striker.

Noble may not be nailed anymore.
It's hard to do but I have got Salah Sterling and KDB in.
KDB may get close to covering Sterling for a lot less but I would not have the same confidence going C with him.

Yeah going to evaluate it more after pre-season matches etc, just gambling that VAR produces more penalties etc so just put him in temporarily for now. Will keep an eye out though, thanks for the info!

Yeah, i've tried to get Sterling in so bad, he's ridiculous but would have to rip the whole team apart so tried to go for a bit of balance. I'll probably make another 50 drafts before the season kicks off aswell haha!

That is a solid team. Only change I would make would be to get rid of Pickford if you are picking Digne (unless you back a double Everton defence a lot.) Either go for another 5.5 like Kepa or Lloris or drop to a 5.0 to give you an extra 0.5 elsewhere (e.g. upgrading Button)

      1. Tingate
        • 10 Years
        4 years, 8 months ago

Yeah i'm usually not a fan of doubling up defensively but Digne can offer attacking returns after seeing him last season. Also Everton's home form last season was solid, and i'd be happy to put them both in and just let it play out until GW 15. Just trying to reduce any potential transfer headaches early on.

I think with keepers you can usually find a combo of 2 where you can leave them and not need to transfer them as they won't face any top 6 teams. I think Brighton and Watford enables this for the whole season

What are your thought on Calvert?
Fixtures help I suppose but is that and budget the reason we are considering him or is he viable. Returns for minutes played last year does look decent tbf.

      1. Tingate
        • 10 Years
        4 years, 8 months ago

He's in there for now until pre-season fixtures give us a bit more idea of his game time. His returns seemed decent and Everton's fixtures look very nice until GW14, reason why i've doubled up on their defence too after their home stats last season.

    Thoughts on this

If your subs are fodder and the keeper you are trusting in Heaton, I'd possibly try and find another 0.5 to get someone else in goal.
Rest of the team looks good, especially defence and midfield
      Weak up front

Could start with kane instead of deulofeu and jorginho instead of KDB. Jorginho just in there was an enabler for 3 big hitters (and hopefully on penalties)

Like it apart from Murray in attack (personally choosing DCL over him) and Yarmolenko on the bench as West Ham are stocked on wingers and his minutes are far from guaranteed (something you can normally get at 6.0)

      1. AuFeld
        • 7 Years

What's wrong with the Murray pick? $6m for PK's and good opening fixtures (except GW4).

        1. bhh
          • 5 Years

I think Murray may not get the minutes he did last season. Prefer the idea of DCL who will get more minutes than last season and seemed to return when he did get them

          1. AuFeld
            • 7 Years
            4 years, 8 months ago

Unless BHA sign a forward, I can't see Andone or Locadia picking up the slack. DCL is a good shout, however I think his minutes are more of a risk then Murray's with Toosoon and Richarilson playing as forwards last season.

FWIW, both Murray and DCL offer identical minutes per point.

I’m tempted by a 2/3 man midfield but over the years, it doesn’t seem to be done by better players.
I think you need the flexibility to jump on the mid priced midfield bandwagons who go through five game (or more) purple patches. Michu, Mahrez, Gross, Richarlison.

Funds will spread a lot more (will get someone like Sigurdsson) if I end up going KDB over Sterling, but for now I’m fairly happy with this draft. Fairly flexible too in terms of being able to make moves, and with 2 playing subs.

    Heaton (Button)
    TAA VVD Laporte Coleman (Kelly)
    Salah Sterling Perez (Dendoncker Romeu)
    Vardy King Deulofeu

Perez could be any midfielder 6.5 or less

Very similar to mine except I've gone 442 with Jorginho as enabler to allow kane instead of vardy.

          This

I want Leicester but not that much. Vardy looks best as the team is set up around him. But strategically it’s hard to move from Vardy to Kane if he starts blanking. Easier to start with Perez Kane then get Vardy later if it’s flying at Leicester. If it flops there are a few in range that Perez could become.

    Guys,

Which is the best 4.5m Defender to play in a 4-4-2 for the first 3 Gameweeks?

To play alongside TAA - Robertson - Digne

    Thanks.

If Trippier remins at Spurs I would go for him, maybe Coleman but two Everton defenders could be risky if they start to concede goals

Close but start with A with a view to moving to B

I’d want to wait and see a little with KdB. Also you can move from Kun to Vardy but not vice versa. I like Vardy a lot but skin has the fixtures imo.

      Perez? Who knows.

    How’s this

    Fabs 4.0
    Digne Coleman taa vvd (Kelly)
    Kdb raz mo grealish (dendoncker)
    Jota king 4.5

I’m pretty settled on this now

Figure one of the Everton full backs could be a city defender

Fabs could be heaton Ryan steer and that allow grealish to perez or other

    Kdb could become son

    Ryan | Button
    Digne Trent Robertson Cathcart Targett
    Zaha Perez Salah Sterling Dendoncker
    King Vardy Greenwood..

Been tinkering with Zaha to 5.5 looking at Moutinho which could upgrade a keeper or a striker Ederson or maybe Adams (sot)?

But all in all I quite like it,

£1.0mil difference is big this year. I went with Jota for my team. My front three ie Jota Wilson Deulofeu at the moment. Would be interesting if the scout team could look into Wolves’ performances vs big teams who scores more fpl points Jota vs Jimenez.

With the introduction of VAR it is likely this season will have the record high number of penalties awarded.
This massively enhances the value of penalty takers (obviously) and potentially increases appeal of 'keepers with good penalty save records like Pickford (I'm opting for Heaton who has a 30% save record).
However, on the flip side... this equally devalues the premium defenders. I highly doubt we will see Man City and Liverpool record 20+ clean sheets again. It may be better looking for value defenders with good attacking returns in poor defensive teams (Holebas, Ritchie, Duffy, Boly, Ake) rather than looking for ways in to teams with good defensive records.

Var will give more pens but also take pens away from divers etc. So overall little difference imo

      1. LangerznMash
        • 7 Years
        4 years, 8 months ago

There will be far more VAR pens awarded than taken away. Who would be stupid enough to dive now under all the cameras you just put yourself in a lose-lose situation.

        1. Wild Rover
          • 13 Years
          4 years, 8 months ago

So if they don’t dive there will less penalties then right?

          1. LangerznMash
            • 7 Years
            4 years, 8 months ago

True in that respect, but how many penalties were awarded for dives last season (official dives where retrospective punishment was applied)?

Weigh this against the extra penalties that will be given for various reasons (handball, shirt pulls, pushes, trips, wrestling, man before ball) I think the scale tips drastically to more awarded.

Well I've backed my theory and picked 8 players who are number one penalty takers.
Must be worth noting that if Pogba leaves Man Utd this must make Rashford (their second in line pen taker) absolutely essential for all.
