Palace and Everton reward defensive investment in 0-0 draw

Crystal Palace 0-0 Everton

Goals: None

Assists: None

Bonus Points: Yerry Mina x3 (£5.5m), Michael Keane x2 (£5.5m), Jordan Pickford x1 (£5.5m)

Crystal Palace and Everton played out a 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park that highlighted both sides’ serious need for a goalscoring forward in the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

However, it left Fantasy managers invested in the defences of each team delighted to get clean sheets at the first time of asking.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) had two excellent chances for Everton but couldn’t find the back of the net, disappointing the 14% of Fantasy maangers who trusted him with a spot in their Gameweek 1 sqauds.

Meanwhile, strong defending from Michael Keane (£5.5m) and his colleagues, as well as some smart stops from Jordan Pickford (£5.5m), kept Palace at bay to ensure the Merseysiders continued their strong defensive form from the end of the 2018/19 season.

That was welcome news for those who had been a little concerned about the value in Everton’s defence in light of Idrissa Gueye’s departure and Kurt Zouma (£5.0m) remaining at Chelsea.

Palace grew into the game and were helped by the introduction of Zaha

However, it must be said that Palace did spend the first 65 minutes without their talismanic forward player Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) who missed pre-season due to involvement in the African Cup of Nations and reportedly handed in a transfer request towards the end of the summer window.

Selected by 19.8% of managers ahead of Gameweek 1, Zaha was omitted from the starting XI by Roy Hodgson, but came off the bench to a raucous ovation from the Selhurst faithful indicating the fans are both appreciative and understanding of the Ivorian’s situation despite reportedly trying to force a move to Everton.

“I only really saw him on Friday, basically, because I sent him home on Thursday and we didn’t train on Wednesday. But if you are asking me how was he yesterday, he was fine. And today in the dressing room, and in the game? He was excellent in the dressing room, and you could see what he did in the game. The fact is that the situation has been and gone. I am sure Wilf will now make certain he brings his straw to the water to help us have a good season, just like he has in the past two seasons [when I have been here].” – Roy Hodgson

Saturday’s fixture against Everton highlighted that in spite of the situation regarding Zaha and the question marks over his commitment to the club, this is a player with raw and unparalleled ability in Palace’s squad and someone who could make a serious attacking impact for the Eagles in 2019/20. It took him coming on to spark Palace into life.

“I thought he handled it very well. The crowd helped didn’t it, giving him such a great reception. It was nice to have him available. I thought the two front players did an exceptional job, but they were tiring, and it was good to have him to come on, and Connor Wickham too to help keep that momentum that we had going in the latter part of the game. It was never going to be easy to break them down, although I hoped that we might eventually.” – Roy Hodgson

Max Meyer (£5.5m) had a string of promising chance for Palace, but the German couldn’t find a clinical cutting-edge as Hodgson’s side laboured in vain.

Christian Benteke (£6.0m) also fired a number of blanks with the Belgian appearing to be still short of confidence and unlikely to shoulder responsibility for Palace’s goals this season.

Richarlison and Everton’s attacking players are in need of some help, which Kean should bring them

It was a similar story for Everton who began the match without new signing Moise Keane (£7.0m) in the starting line-up, the striker having not been involved in any of the Toffees’ pre-season matches.

After arriving as a 69th-minute substitute for Dominic Calvert Lewin (£6.0m), he showed glimpses of quality that suggested the hype surrounding his switch from Juventus could be justified.

The Italian should play an important role for the Toffees this season but may need time to find his feet, as well as earning the trust of Fantasy managers with more proven options such as Sigurdsson and Richarlison (£8.0m) currently available.

Pickford’s defensive performance underlined his value to Fantasy managers with a first clean sheet of the season. The defensive quartet of Lucas Digne (£6.0m), Yerry Mina (£5.5m) Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) and Keane shielded the England international from Palace’s efforts in the second half and will have inspired confidence in their Fantasy owners ahead of Watford’s trip to Goodison Park in Gameweek 2.

Everton could have some central midfield issues after Gomes (right) went off injured and Schneiderlin was shown a red card

However, an injury to Andre Gomes (£5.5m) is an area of potential concern for Everton’s central midfield options. He was replaced by new signing Jean-Philippe Gbamin (£5.0m) in the 45th minute.

Silva confirmed that the 26-year-old is set to be assessed in the coming days and admitted that Everton suffered when he had to come off.

“The moment the game changed was the injury to André Gomes. We hope it’s not serious. When I changed it with Jean-Philippe Gbamin he had some problems, which is normal he needs to adapt, and when you sign new players, young players they need time to adapt and it was one of the keys for us because we started losing easy balls during that second-half.” – Marco Silva

Furthermore, Everton are already down one option in central midfield after Morgan Schneiderlin‘s (£4.5m) red card in the second half. He was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the 76th minute and will miss that meeting with Watford next weekend.

“I didn’t see the first [booking]. But the referee gave the second. For me it was not, but Morgan should not react like he did, if you are playing with a yellow card, you have a risk.” – Marco Silva

How was Rico? I think Howe seems to like him.. Maybe the best 4m option

Best 4m option is Lundstram imo. Rico was ok though. Seemed involved in a lot of set pieces, mainly putting the ball down for Fraser though

Lundstram might have played the majority of his minutes this season already so heed cautiously.

Not got IPhone but I'd probably look in the settings for autoforms and see if anything related to this site. Delete it and try again

Also is your cookies set to be deleted when you close the browser? That could mean the settings for the site is being lost

Hmm can’t really find the autoforms setting you mention.

It's more likely to be cookies related but autoforms ( Google how to find them on iPhone) could have corrupted somthing. Try deleting your cookies cache . Usually in privacy and security settings. Obviously ensure they are enabled.

Shouldn’t move in price. I’m shipping him for Auba this week (depending on Auba’s performance of course). Wasn’t so impressed with Kane’s performance - he will struggle vs City

I’m planning a similar (Moura & Wilson to Kane & Barkley) move after GW2 but Son is coming back as well so haven’t fully decided if I should go for Son instead.

      I wouldn’t expect a price rise before GW2

They were relatively solid. Lundstram got a few crosses in & is OOP, looks a great option. Robinson was in dangerous positions and could've been luckier, would imagine he'd get more opportunities at home. Love that I have both before 2 home games

If he played 62 mins... and has an XG of 0.34 in that 62 minutes... how do they get the 0.79 XG per 90?

And 2 big chances but an XG of 0.34 just seems either an error, or alternatively a “big chance” can have an XG as low as 0.17?

Neither seem good endorsements of the metrics to me... I must be missing something!

I think he pushed him further up as his fitness is not at the level it needs to be at to A) play a full 90 at PL pace and B) to play deeper in the Poch system.

I’m not convinced Howe is great manager really. He’s brilliant at identifying talent and Bournemouth have done great business down the years. But when he starts trying new systems as he did towards the end of last season the wheels fall off.

Their attacking record is what he’s known for but they didn’t actually score that many last time out - about one goal in 8 games more than high midranked sides

BBC dont know anything about football if they think Billing was MOM. Hes just a big guy who fouls people, extremely slow on the ball and never plays a forward pass.

"Apart from one wayward shot which went well over, it was a very impressive competitive Cherries debut for Philip Billing in the heart of the Bournemouth midfield. He played his part in his side's goal, had a pass accuracy of 83%, created two chances with key passes, had one powerful shot on target, had 79 touches, made six tackles and four interceptions."

I haven't seen the game myself.

Seems the BBC didnt either and base their MoM award on stats without looking deeper into it. Yea he tackles a lot, but then afterwards he does nothing, just slowly lumbers on the ball and ends up passing it sideways or being intercepted himself. So many chances to counter that he ruined. British commentators tend to love that kind of "fighter" in the middle though and when he has a powerful shot on target hes bound to get MoM by those dinosaurs.

                Those numbers are excellent.

Top 5 in the league for tackles. Top 5 for interceptions. Top 10 for chances created.

Was King really that bad? The formation just didn't suit Bournemouth and going back to 442 with Wilson on the wing will be better?

King was horrible. He lost possession every time he had it. He overestimates his own ability constantly which means he tries to take on 2-3 players and inevitably loses the ball.

            • 12 Years

King is clearly PL quality, you are talking rubbish. Yes, the guy's decision making is poor and he isn't as good when there is less space but the guy is averaging 10 goals a season in the premiership.

Because of Howe's system that is based around only attacking. Basically every attacker will get points in Howe's team. Doesnt change the fact that hes a poor player. Have you seen him play? Hes simply a limited and mediocre player. Ive seen him play for Norway for years.
