Palace and Everton reward defensive investment in 0-0 draw

Crystal Palace 0-0 Everton

Goals: None

Assists: None

Bonus Points: Yerry Mina x3 (£5.5m), Michael Keane x2 (£5.5m), Jordan Pickford x1 (£5.5m)

Crystal Palace and Everton played out a 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park that highlighted both sides’ serious need for a goalscoring forward in the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

However, it left Fantasy managers invested in the defences of each team delighted to get clean sheets at the first time of asking.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) had two excellent chances for Everton but couldn’t find the back of the net, disappointing the 14% of Fantasy maangers who trusted him with a spot in their Gameweek 1 sqauds.

Meanwhile, strong defending from Michael Keane (£5.5m) and his colleagues, as well as some smart stops from Jordan Pickford (£5.5m), kept Palace at bay to ensure the Merseysiders continued their strong defensive form from the end of the 2018/19 season.

That was welcome news for those who had been a little concerned about the value in Everton’s defence in light of Idrissa Gueye’s departure and Kurt Zouma (£5.0m) remaining at Chelsea.

Palace grew into the game and were helped by the introduction of Zaha

However, it must be said that Palace did spend the first 65 minutes without their talismanic forward player Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) who missed pre-season due to involvement in the African Cup of Nations and reportedly handed in a transfer request towards the end of the summer window.

Selected by 19.8% of managers ahead of Gameweek 1, Zaha was omitted from the starting XI by Roy Hodgson, but came off the bench to a raucous ovation from the Selhurst faithful indicating the fans are both appreciative and understanding of the Ivorian’s situation despite reportedly trying to force a move to Everton.

“I only really saw him on Friday, basically, because I sent him home on Thursday and we didn’t train on Wednesday. But if you are asking me how was he yesterday, he was fine. And today in the dressing room, and in the game? He was excellent in the dressing room, and you could see what he did in the game. The fact is that the situation has been and gone. I am sure Wilf will now make certain he brings his straw to the water to help us have a good season, just like he has in the past two seasons [when I have been here].” – Roy Hodgson

Saturday’s fixture against Everton highlighted that in spite of the situation regarding Zaha and the question marks over his commitment to the club, this is a player with raw and unparalleled ability in Palace’s squad and someone who could make a serious attacking impact for the Eagles in 2019/20. It took him coming on to spark Palace into life.

“I thought he handled it very well. The crowd helped didn’t it, giving him such a great reception. It was nice to have him available. I thought the two front players did an exceptional job, but they were tiring, and it was good to have him to come on, and Connor Wickham too to help keep that momentum that we had going in the latter part of the game. It was never going to be easy to break them down, although I hoped that we might eventually.” – Roy Hodgson

Max Meyer (£5.5m) had a string of promising chance for Palace, but the German couldn’t find a clinical cutting-edge as Hodgson’s side laboured in vain.

Christian Benteke (£6.0m) also fired a number of blanks with the Belgian appearing to be still short of confidence and unlikely to shoulder responsibility for Palace’s goals this season.

Richarlison and Everton’s attacking players are in need of some help, which Kean should bring them

It was a similar story for Everton who began the match without new signing Moise Keane (£7.0m) in the starting line-up, the striker having not been involved in any of the Toffees’ pre-season matches.

After arriving as a 69th-minute substitute for Dominic Calvert Lewin (£6.0m), he showed glimpses of quality that suggested the hype surrounding his switch from Juventus could be justified.

The Italian should play an important role for the Toffees this season but may need time to find his feet, as well as earning the trust of Fantasy managers with more proven options such as Sigurdsson and Richarlison (£8.0m) currently available.

Pickford’s defensive performance underlined his value to Fantasy managers with a first clean sheet of the season. The defensive quartet of Lucas Digne (£6.0m), Yerry Mina (£5.5m) Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) and Keane shielded the England international from Palace’s efforts in the second half and will have inspired confidence in their Fantasy owners ahead of Watford’s trip to Goodison Park in Gameweek 2.

Everton could have some central midfield issues after Gomes (right) went off injured and Schneiderlin was shown a red card

However, an injury to Andre Gomes (£5.5m) is an area of potential concern for Everton’s central midfield options. He was replaced by new signing Jean-Philippe Gbamin (£5.0m) in the 45th minute.

Silva confirmed that the 26-year-old is set to be assessed in the coming days and admitted that Everton suffered when he had to come off.

“The moment the game changed was the injury to André Gomes. We hope it’s not serious. When I changed it with Jean-Philippe Gbamin he had some problems, which is normal he needs to adapt, and when you sign new players, young players they need time to adapt and it was one of the keys for us because we started losing easy balls during that second-half.” – Marco Silva

Furthermore, Everton are already down one option in central midfield after Morgan Schneiderlin‘s (£4.5m) red card in the second half. He was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the 76th minute and will miss that meeting with Watford next weekend.

“I didn’t see the first [booking]. But the referee gave the second. For me it was not, but Morgan should not react like he did, if you are playing with a yellow card, you have a risk.” – Marco Silva

Does anyone know if Lo Celso takes set pieces? Will he take any for Spurs?

For those considering selling Bournemouth assets... Villa will attack at home leaving space for the likes of King Wilson Fraser. Would definitely not sell

I’m always in awe of GW 1 knee jerks. You pick your squad and players for a reason beyond 1 week. I can’t recall a time when I made a GW2 transfer

I am playing as Potter likes to rotate, Trossard in great preseason form and seems sensible to give him home debut in PL.

Keeping an eye on Martial today. He is fantastic when he's in the mood, as he was during a spell under LVG. Apparently he's going to play CF, so that bodes well from a FPL perspective.

Yea true. Im not sure what Im doing but it will be a double transfer after GW2 and Martial in is one of the things Im looking at. Dont have Sterling though... so if Auba looks lacklustre Ill probably have to get him in.

I want to see Martial doing far more off the ball. I've noticed he's been static quite often, waiting the ball to come to him, instead of finding space and making intelligent runs. Once on the ball, he is outstanding, but his work off the ball worries me.

"When you play a match, it is statistically proven that players actually have the ball 3 minutes on average … So, the most important thing is: what do you do during those 87 minutes when you do not have the ball. That is what determines whether you’re a good player or not." - Cruyff

with a better passing midfield the balls would come to him.....

    OT - 2(3rd after Raheem & Barnes)

I think the only issue with Kane is that ppl can't afford him alongside Salah and Sterling and get a good long term team too. So Kane unfortunately gets all the hate. I love Kane and I know he comes with his faults.. But he is an uber premium at a price of 11 which I just couldn't overlook

No hate from me, but I simply couldn't justify SSK, and K had to go. I'm on 85 points with Jim and Jot + the Donkey to come, so I don't regret my decision to omit Kane.

We know this with Kane. People can whinge all they like that he got nothing for 87 minutes but in reality he only needs to be good for about 15 seconds of the match and he walks away with 2 goals and max bonus. Doesn't matter if these 15 seconds are all in the first 3 minutes, all in the last or scattered randomly throughout the whole match.

Sure, but the bottom line is this:
        Do you advice
        a) SSK
        b) K with Salah and not Sterling
        c) K with Sterling and not Salah
        d) SS and have to do without K magic (my position)?

Good decent start thankfully (79 w/Vardy & Perez not out) but goddammit the wildcard is tempting already

Allison’s injury, Adrian’s emergence, Mahrez’s fortune with Sane’s knee surgery, the 3x starting 4.0 defs, Groß, Brighton’s cheap forwards...

If Martial passes the eye test today I’d be sorely tempted

Sticking... No point to rush him in vs Spurs for -4. But unlucky, yes. Salah and Kane did well, and I still have Auba +2 others to go (65 pts now). Tbh that was extremely annoying result and his price looks to rise .1 🙁

Anyone have any info on what happened to Guilbert? Why wasn’t he in the villa squad yesterday? My bench is super weak so he is an issue for me if he is out of favour...

But not even in the squad?!

I really hope he starts next week otherwise there is a waste of a transfer for me - annoying as I spent a fair bit of time looking at the 4.5 defender options

This is my issue, I wouldn't be too bothered if he was on the bench. It's the fact he was missing completely.

It's not like Villa have a mammoth squad either where there'd be no room for him on the bench.
Wonder if he was actually at the stadium.

Click on El Mohamady - you will see that he has already performed well in the PL. Last Season he had 8 A & 2 G. The manager was never going to give up on all of that.

Found it. To be honest, I view it with grave suspicion. It looks like a marketing con. Plus, the provenance of the vineyards is very obscure. I was born in S. A., by the way.

But, tbf, I have obviously never tasted it. Run it past Christina, and see what he says. He is well up on all the latest Cape developments.

Oddbums brought Vilafonte into Uk about 25 years ago, they were very good wines back then.

I think some people decided to listen to a vocal Villa fan on the other side of the world who was, understandably, getting a bit giddy about his team being back in the Prem and bigging up their new signings.

Exactly 3-0 is a good win and they don't need a change. The pre-season might just be to give him game time.
If Martial plays well I'll wait to get 2FT. All depends on Barkley here too.

Yeah, it's probably wise to draw a line under it, call it a mistake, and move on. He may only get a cameo next game as he's eased in, whilst other players are getting points. Picking the right replacement is the key.

This might sound hilarious right now but Wilson at that price point will be value wrt to other forwards at the end of the season and I would not get rid unless injured imo

Issue is given his price you are ruling out Kane or Auba given SS (and maybe Mane) look crucial

Are Salah and sterling owners tempted to bring in kane as well for gw3?

Newcastle home and lovely fixtures there on.

Could save ft and then make 3 next week for Salah sterling and kane....

Not me. All my players have hauled (lowest scorer TAA on 5) so I'm not going to tear up a winning side to fit him in.

Same boat, but waiting to see if there is any info on why he wasn’t involved. McGinn looks an option with fixtures as does the new arsenal lad.

Yeah I’m the same, I had Gündogan and Trossard, already done Gündogan to McGinn, but if Trossard def not playing then I’m happy to -4

I’m on Salah atm though could easily flip over. Spurs aren’t great at the back these days

Auba’s vs Burnley is better. But if you aren’t as lucky as me sterling is certainly the next best, especially if he plays vs a terrible KWP or a rusty Aurier

Fellow Heaton owners....he certainly lucked out yesterday in comparison to Ryan and Pope, but generally passed the eye test and looked good.

Are you all happy rolling with him for the long term? Villa's defence seemed pretty robust for most of the game against Spurs, so we'll hopefully see some clean sheets and points in future games. Or alternatively, are you jumping ship?

He pulled off some great saves yesterday. Mings looked solid in front of him. I’m certainly keeping him as I think with Mings and Luiz in front, CS will follow.

He looks good but team defence is arguably even more important for keepers than how they look themselves, I think Bournemouth should give a better idea about Villa’s defensive performance vs non top 6 teams.

I’d definitely keep him for now if I had him.
