Man United defence stunned as Rashford misses penalty

Goals: Daniel James (£6.0m) | Jordan Ayew (£5.0m) Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m)

Assists: Anthony Martial (£7.7m) | Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m)

Bonus Points: Ayew x 3 Van Aanholt x 2 Schlupp x 1

Crystal Palace secured their first win of the 2019/20 Premier League season in dramatic fashion with a last-minute winner from Patrick van Aanholt (£5.0m) at Old Trafford.

Manchester United came into the game off the back of an unbeaten start to 2019/20 with a 4-0 victory over Chelsea and a 1-1 draw on Monday with Wolves.

However, instead of playing with energy and confidence from their opening encounters, Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer’s side were laboured against Palace on Saturday as a missed penalty from Marcus Rashford (£8.7m) summed up the Red Devil’s afternoon.

Last week’s draw at Wolves drew considerable debate regarding United’s penalty-takers, with Solsjkaer claiming in his post-match interview that he leaves the final decision to either Paul Pogba (£8.6m) or Rashford dependent on their own preferences.

Manchester United had further penalty problems on Saturday afternoon

Pogba’s poorly taken spot-kick at Molineux meant it was Rashford who resumed duties from the penalty spot against Palace. It was interesting to see that Anthony Martial (£7.7m) took command of the penalty situation this time, decisively picking the ball up after Scott McTominay (£5.0m) was fouled, and thrust it into Rashford’s hands. Pogba, meanwhile, was conspicuous by his absence from the exchange.

However, Rashford was still unable to bury his spot-kick, striking the post on Saturday afternoon. That was a huge blow for Rashford’s 27.6% ownership, as he registered a Gameweek 3 score of zero points.

“Fine margins. We’re disappointed but I’m sure Marcus will look at his penalty again but he’ll definitely step up again.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Martial registered an assist for Daniel James’ (£6.0m) goal, yet the Frenchman will have been disappointed to not have added to his tally of attacking returns in 2019/20 after failing to add a clinical cutting edge on a number of occasions.

Backed by 18.6% of managers as the most-owned United midfielder, Martial certainly is passing the eye-test, and at £7.7m the French forward is certainly a value-for-money option amidst United’s attacking options.

Martial was one of two Manchester United players to pick up an injury against Palace

However, any potential new owners may want to keep an eye on his fitness this week as Martial limped off at the end of the game.

The Manchester United website reported that he had picked up an injury in the closing stages with Solskjaer unable to provide much of an update at this early stage.

There was also some concern for Luke Shaw (£5.5m) after he was taken off in the 34th minute, but Solsjkaer confirmed the injury is not thought to be serious or long-term.

“We’ll have to wait and see. Hopefully, they won’t be too bad and maybe we can have them training during the week. We’ll do the scans tomorrow but (Shaw) felt something in his hamstring. Hopefully, it won’t be too bad and I hope he is going to be back for Southampton.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

James, a bright spark amidst an afternoon of misfortune for United, was energetic throughout the game against Palace and got a well-deserved goal in the 89th minute.

He now has attacking returns in both of his matches at Old Trafford this season and has started the last two Gameweeks in a row. That may suggest the former Swansea City midfielder can provide an alternate budget route into the Manchester United attack.

Fantasy managers had also been flocking to United’s defensive assets after some impressive displays at the back in the first two Gameeeks. The arrivals of Harry Maguire (£5.5m) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.6m) looked to have stabilised the Red Devils’ backline.

However, their failure to keep a clean sheet against a team that offered little going forward might reminder to managers of how far United still have to come. There was also frustration for Wan-Bissaka owners as he picked up a yellow card in the second half.

Solskjaer’s men spent the majority of the first half camped in Palace’s final third and were caught off guard by the first counter-attack of the match.

Ayew capitalised on Manchester United’s high line in the first half

Palace had been resilient in the face of considerable pressure in the opening stages, but it was Jordan Ayew (£5.0m) who found the breakthrough for Palace to put them 1-0 up against the run of play.

The Eagles’ lack of goalscoring impetus aside from Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) is well documented, though Ayew’s performance and goalscoring contribution could suggest he is capable of involving himself in Palace’s attacking efforts in 2019/20.

Van Aanholt also reminded Fantasy managers what he is capable of, sending Palace’s away end into a state of euphoria with a winner in injury time. The Dutch defender has always held an attacking threat, averaging nearly five goals a season since 2015/16, and he was once again on target to secure a vital win for Palace.

For Hodgson’s men, this was an extremely important result, yet it was also a timely reminder that the Eagles, on their day, can be a match for any of the Premier League’s elite sides if they show the resilience they displayed at times in 2018/19.

Van Aanholt celebrates scoring the winner for Crystal Palace at Old Trafford

Gary Cahill (£4.5m) was solid at the back alongside Martin Kelly (£4.0m), which is good news for the Fantasy appeal of the latter, who started ahead of Scott Dann (£4.5m).

The arrival of the ex-Chelsea man on a free transfer could potentially revitalise Palace as a defensive unit worthy of investment – a prospect that may have been discarded by managers following the departure of Wan-Bissaka to United.

This was an afternoon that belonged to Palace and their resilient attitude in the face of extreme pressure, yet after just three Premier League games of 2019/20, a familiar line of questioning may be pointed towards United.

Defensive frailties have once again been exposed, and they were not too ruthless going forward either. That may lead to further scrutiny of their Fantasy assets in the upcoming Gameweeks.

The reaction to United's results is gas...

    4-0 against Chelsea
Reaction: "Defense is back, attack is quality, everyone buy Utd players !"
For anyone who watched the game Chelsea should have been 0-2 up. United got in front due to a stupid tackle from Zouma which changed the game. Final scoreline was flattering against a very young Chelsea side.

    1-1 against Wolves:
    Reaction: "penalty fiasco !"
Utd actually played quite well, deserved to win.
But belter from Neves and the missed pen (anyone can miss a pen) saved it for Wolves.

    1-2 against Palace
Reaction: "are united in the relegation mix (pathetic), get rid of all Utd defenders (shouldnt have bought them in the first place) "
By all accounts they battered Palace yesterday and deserved at least a draw. The Palace opener was a lucky long ball flick on, Lindelof wasn't strong enough in the air.
Another missed pen and the final goal a break away by Palace as United pushed for the winner. Albeit a mistake from DeGea threw it away.

Get a grip lads, its early days. New philosophy from Solskjaer and the whole club in general in the window since SAF left.
They won't be winning any leagues this year but will be there or there abouts for the top 4 in May.
In terms of FPL sit tight and observe. A win against Southampton next week and everyone will be jumping on again !

United had the second best xG this week (2.53) just behind Hammers against an abysmal Hornets defence. They also had the best xGc against Palace and were unlucky not to win. People look at results rather than the underlying stats and wonder why they don’t succeed at FPL. United Top 4 comfortably

Sorted mate, only made a real difference if you captained him but Sterling and KDB can easily cover any Salah losses anyway. There’s not many games i’d be capping a pool player for anyway. Stick to the plan bud it’ll work, ignore the scaremongering here and stuff.

I was going to, but then I got spooked by Cantwell's potential to go up again, and I had Issac Hayden wasting my fifth midfield spot. Still got WC in hand if it gets desperate but I've earmarked using that for the October international break.

Which bandwagon are you just going to have to accept temporary defeat on?

Here it's the 5.5-6.5 mids (Mount/Ceballos etc.). It basically comes down to who you want more and I'd prefer the Haller-Pukki talisman frontline right now over one of those. Annoying but there you go.

Mount. I went last week for Rahford and Martial. And even in hindsight I think the move was correct, result is another matter though.

I doubt Martial to Mount with current injury situation is any longer clever way to go. Rashford to Haller would be perhaps hasty move, but if there is Son (/KdB) bandwagon it would give funds for that. (I expect both Rashford and Haller get points next week.)

      Liverpool defence and Pukki:

There are quite a few WC teams still proposing a Liverpool defender, which I find unecessarily high risk compared to other options, considering 0 clean sheets from 4 is exactly indicative of our quality at the back without Alisson.
There's also no indication of his return date, as of an update 48 hours ago:
      https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.liverpoolfc.com/amp/news/first-team/362012-alisson-becker-injury-update-latest

I've also seen quite a few comments about Pukki having scored against us (Lfc) as indicating his true quality.
Sure it was a great finish, but again without Alisson on the pitch we looked a shadow of our defensive unit of last season. Pukki will probably have a very good season, but not because he scored against a very poor lfc defence

      1. MTPockets
          4 years, 7 months ago

But the goal conceded yesterday had nothing to do with Alisson/Adrian

Yes it was - had Alisson been playing, we would have looked like a different team altogether. If you've watched our games as I have, you'd realise we look comparatively nervous at the back.

                4 years, 7 months ago

TAA cleared the ball straight to Arsenal, who went on to score. They're grownup footballers. Can't blame everything on not having Alisson or most other teams in the league with worse GK + worse defence would be perpetually screwed.

GW2 only 2 clean sheets. GW3 only 2 clean sheets so far.

            LFC defenders = attacking returns.

Last season a lot of our defenders fpl points did come from clean sheets, and the attacking returns were the added benefit that set them apart.
Currently our likelihood of clean sheets is diminished..

Imo Liverpool showed yesterday some defensive improving and was close to keep cs. And it was vs Arsenal. I expect them to get 1-2 cs in next two, Newcastle should be happy to get even one shot on target.

I know! Well remembered - I just didn't believe Villa and should have stuck to the planned rotation. I'll still sell Heaton when I can for the 0.5. Ultimately we hit our own button.
Sadly I'd say skip the WH defence whenever you can - the ultimate team of night and day qualities and whisper it, but Fabs hasn't been too great. Lanzini, Haller both look excellent FPL options and are playing well.

            Pukki is a no-branier though you're late, but I think he's a season keeper.

Haller - not sure yet. It's West Ham and you know how they roll. Look at how Arnautovic performed for them - not even he managed to get enough FPL points.

As you say - very inconsistent side. But Haller will score similarly to Pukki over the season (per mins anyway). Will get more assists to Pukkis goals I suspect. He's a much better FPL option than Arnie, holds position better, doesn't drop deep so much and no capacity to go missing like Arnie did.

Fair enough. But Robinson has to go imo
I have him too and I’m quite keen to make a -4 hit if necessary, just to get rid

I really need to get rid of Robinson. He’s been a disappointment

I’d love Mount, but I’d have to downgrade a player somewhere and do a -4

So the options available to me are
          McGinn or Cellobas

            Cellobas isn't an option

            Stick with McGinn

McGinn for my money. Tied on and great looking fixtures.

McGinn great fixture to about gameweek 10 could then switch to Cellebos that’s what I’m thinking

Still no Aguero love on here? The man's scored 2 in less than 90 minutes! Amazing he's currently a differential.

Sterling, KDB and defenders are all better City picks than him

Wouldn't be surprised if Jesus started today

Dont got me wrong - I love Aguero (he is an amazing player and an FPL legend) but i am afraid his minutes will be managed with Jesus fit. Also i see Sterling as better value for the same price (altbough this coukd change with first Kun brace or hattie)

You cannot have Sterling and Aguero.

              Either one or the other.

Any reasonable excuse to get him in and I will

Nah that's fine tbh. Jimenez might bang today and Trossard is good but has city next.

Haven’t seen many teams with Jiménez on here... I started the season with him but unless he delivers today I’m feeling a straight swap to Haller. Anyone else in the same situation?
