Man United defence stunned as Rashford misses penalty

Goals: Daniel James (£6.0m) | Jordan Ayew (£5.0m) Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m)

Assists: Anthony Martial (£7.7m) | Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m)

Bonus Points: Ayew x 3 Van Aanholt x 2 Schlupp x 1

Crystal Palace secured their first win of the 2019/20 Premier League season in dramatic fashion with a last-minute winner from Patrick van Aanholt (£5.0m) at Old Trafford.

Manchester United came into the game off the back of an unbeaten start to 2019/20 with a 4-0 victory over Chelsea and a 1-1 draw on Monday with Wolves.

However, instead of playing with energy and confidence from their opening encounters, Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer’s side were laboured against Palace on Saturday as a missed penalty from Marcus Rashford (£8.7m) summed up the Red Devil’s afternoon.

Last week’s draw at Wolves drew considerable debate regarding United’s penalty-takers, with Solsjkaer claiming in his post-match interview that he leaves the final decision to either Paul Pogba (£8.6m) or Rashford dependent on their own preferences.

Manchester United had further penalty problems on Saturday afternoon

Pogba’s poorly taken spot-kick at Molineux meant it was Rashford who resumed duties from the penalty spot against Palace. It was interesting to see that Anthony Martial (£7.7m) took command of the penalty situation this time, decisively picking the ball up after Scott McTominay (£5.0m) was fouled, and thrust it into Rashford’s hands. Pogba, meanwhile, was conspicuous by his absence from the exchange.

However, Rashford was still unable to bury his spot-kick, striking the post on Saturday afternoon. That was a huge blow for Rashford’s 27.6% ownership, as he registered a Gameweek 3 score of zero points.

“Fine margins. We’re disappointed but I’m sure Marcus will look at his penalty again but he’ll definitely step up again.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Martial registered an assist for Daniel James’ (£6.0m) goal, yet the Frenchman will have been disappointed to not have added to his tally of attacking returns in 2019/20 after failing to add a clinical cutting edge on a number of occasions.

Backed by 18.6% of managers as the most-owned United midfielder, Martial certainly is passing the eye-test, and at £7.7m the French forward is certainly a value-for-money option amidst United’s attacking options.

Martial was one of two Manchester United players to pick up an injury against Palace

However, any potential new owners may want to keep an eye on his fitness this week as Martial limped off at the end of the game.

The Manchester United website reported that he had picked up an injury in the closing stages with Solskjaer unable to provide much of an update at this early stage.

There was also some concern for Luke Shaw (£5.5m) after he was taken off in the 34th minute, but Solsjkaer confirmed the injury is not thought to be serious or long-term.

“We’ll have to wait and see. Hopefully, they won’t be too bad and maybe we can have them training during the week. We’ll do the scans tomorrow but (Shaw) felt something in his hamstring. Hopefully, it won’t be too bad and I hope he is going to be back for Southampton.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

James, a bright spark amidst an afternoon of misfortune for United, was energetic throughout the game against Palace and got a well-deserved goal in the 89th minute.

He now has attacking returns in both of his matches at Old Trafford this season and has started the last two Gameweeks in a row. That may suggest the former Swansea City midfielder can provide an alternate budget route into the Manchester United attack.

Daniel James celebrates scoring for Manchester United

Fantasy managers had also been flocking to United’s defensive assets after some impressive displays at the back in the first two Gameeeks. The arrivals of Harry Maguire (£5.5m) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.6m) looked to have stabilised the Red Devils’ backline.

However, their failure to keep a clean sheet against a team that offered little going forward might reminder to managers of how far United still have to come. There was also frustration for Wan-Bissaka owners as he picked up a yellow card in the second half.

Solskjaer’s men spent the majority of the first half camped in Palace’s final third and were caught off guard by the first counter-attack of the match.

Ayew capitalised on Manchester United’s high line in the first half

Palace had been resilient in the face of considerable pressure in the opening stages, but it was Jordan Ayew (£5.0m) who found the breakthrough for Palace to put them 1-0 up against the run of play.

The Eagles’ lack of goalscoring impetus aside from Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) is well documented, though Ayew’s performance and goalscoring contribution could suggest he is capable of involving himself in Palace’s attacking efforts in 2019/20.

Van Aanholt also reminded Fantasy managers what he is capable of, sending Palace’s away end into a state of euphoria with a winner in injury time. The Dutch defender has always held an attacking threat, averaging nearly five goals a season since 2015/16, and he was once again on target to secure a vital win for Palace.

For Hodgson’s men, this was an extremely important result, yet it was also a timely reminder that the Eagles, on their day, can be a match for any of the Premier League’s elite sides if they show the resilience they displayed at times in 2018/19.

Van Aanholt celebrates scoring the winner for Crystal Palace at Old Trafford

Gary Cahill (£4.5m) was solid at the back alongside Martin Kelly (£4.0m), which is good news for the Fantasy appeal of the latter, who started ahead of Scott Dann (£4.5m).

The arrival of the ex-Chelsea man on a free transfer could potentially revitalise Palace as a defensive unit worthy of investment – a prospect that may have been discarded by managers following the departure of Wan-Bissaka to United.

This was an afternoon that belonged to Palace and their resilient attitude in the face of extreme pressure, yet after just three Premier League games of 2019/20, a familiar line of questioning may be pointed towards United.

Defensive frailties have once again been exposed, and they were not too ruthless going forward either. That may lead to further scrutiny of their Fantasy assets in the upcoming Gameweeks.

    Right.

Can everyone agree not to sell Robertson.

He’s not kept a clean sheet or got an assist or goal yet. Fine. But he’s been so close to getting those returns.

He doesn’t deserve to lose value and be cheaper for people who don’t own him after the international break.

I think it is Robbo's price that is the problem for many.

Clean sheets were not of many GW2 and so far only 2 clean sheets GW3.

I have VVD and Trent. No clean sheets yet but both have provided attacking returns.

So no point me getting rid of VVD when only 1 clean sheet from Laporte vs VVD attacking return.

Of course Laporte could get a cleanie today but will only put him 1 point ahead of VVD pending bonus points.

The likes of VVD and Trent are pick set and forget for me. Both will have top total points again by end of the season.

Mount started at the same price, looks better. Cantwell, Mcginn, Cellabos potentially, all cheaper and look better.

Understandable he's being overlooked. Plus Rash and Martial are better bets, then a lot have a united defender as well.

It depends on how Pope, Zinch and Sterling (C) do today on one hand, and how others do, on the other. If all of them do really well today and other popular players do badly, it's possible that your rank won't drop and it might rise. On the other hand, if Manchester City and and Burnley both concede and Sterling doesn't get attacking returns, you might find yourself in a precarious situation; there's still the chance the Pope might save a penalty kick, effectively saving your day on his part despite conceding, but this won't be enough to save you from the red arrow.

The possible scenarios are plentiful as you can see. If you'd like, I can run further analysis which might lead to a more accurate prediction in regards to the question you posed: "Red arrow from 200k?"

Rodri was fouled in a similar fashion last weekend and the incident was deemed not worthy of a VAR check.

        1. Brosstan
          • 9 Years

Rodri foul was not the same. Rodri didnt have the ball, it was the usual tugging and dragging in the box on a set piece. Also he was holding onto the defender himself. Martial had the ball in a goal scoring position and was dragged down.

If VAR is a thing than what happened in the Chelsea game was criminal. The guy stomps on Mount, VAR reviews it and doesn't give a red. Clear contact on Azpilicueta so penalty must be given, VAR reviews and no penalty (the commentators were laughing about this one). Norwich opening goal starts from a foul on Abraham, VAR reviews and there's no foul so the goal stands.

What's the point if it's going to be like that. Each of the three scenarios from this game will be given the other way in other games. One week they will give it, another they won't. All it does is magnify the woeful refereeing decisions by 1000x and doesn't fix the errors.

Only should use it on plays that don't come down to interpretation..... so offsides and handballs in the box that lead to a goal (as per the new rule). The rest of it may as well not bother. Its clear as mud

I don't reckon. He adjusted his leg and moved it toward Mount's foot as it came down. Then he realised what had happened and started apologising. Could just as easily have adjusted his leg to move away from Mount's foot.

Anyhow, regardless, my point is that one week it will be given, and another it wont. So VAR won't clear this up, it will just add to the confusion

Could be decent - just possibly

Caveat to what follows is that the win wasn't that surprising if you look at Palace form away to top 6 recently. There's a plan and it seems to work. The humdrum matches are more a problem.

If he gets the spot up top ahead of Benteke he'll get a fair few chances. The key might be getting either Cameras or Meyer on the pitch as a 10. Meyer did pretty ok against Everton who were fortunate to walk away with a cs.

He's actually been pretty decent in real life for a while. He's a Roy favourite for a reason but in FPL he'll need to the cutting edge and not workhorse to be worth considering.

Plan was to save FT for IB....but am i "short" for next gw with Ryan+Trossard?

      Ryan
      VVD, Digne, AWB
Salah, Sterling (C), KDB, Trossard, McGinn
      Rashford, Pukki

      Greenwood, Lundstram, Rico

      A) Ryan to Pope

The Trossard move works but only if you are sure you want to lose him moving forward and the players you are talking about are the players you want to replace him with.

Trossard has City, the improved Burnley, away Newcastle (might be the reason to hold), Chelsea away, and Tottenham

Only gets better for gw9 🙁 and by that time any blank will push him to price drop.

Yes does not make sense because you cannot go 343 if you want Kane as fitting 2 budget forwards up top next to him going to see you not have the defence or midfield you desire.

I reckon the budget forwards are going to shine this season.

I really want to swith to 343 and budget options are looking good.

Aguero at 15.7% ownership, with those fixtures. It would be so fitting of him to explode when no one has him. Fingers crossed it's not today, as I'm hoping to find a way to accommodate him.

People heavy loading in midfield (Sterling, KDB, Mane etc) or upfront (Kane, Auba) yet Sergio is arguably the most consistent and proven player at home in FPL History.

City too in the first half of the season are so incredibly fluid going forward and it's historically only at the second half of the season that they tighten-up and stop pushing for 5s and 6s in second halfs. And just look what's coming:

      Brighton (H)
      Norwich (A)
      Watford (H)
      Everton (A)
      Wolves (H)
      C.Palace (A)
      A.Villa (H)
      Southampton (H)

WC owners, ignore him at your peril.

This seems different. Jesus has been starting games and playing well. I agree if Kun plays 3-4 games in a row from the start of could be time to reassess. But until then replacing Sterling or KDB with Kun looks like an unnecessary risk.

            1. GinjaWhinja
              • 14 Years
              4 years, 7 months ago

But my point is by the time he starts 3 or 4 in a row, he could have 10 goals to his name.

Now that seems unlikely for a player who has never finished the top scorer in the league. I see no clear evidence that he will outscore Sterling or KDB even if he starts every game. Add in the unpredictable starts and he doesn't seem a great option.

Things are different this season. Pep seems to really, really like Jesus. He'll never be as good as Aguero, but Pep will find a way to play him often

You could be right, but Pep was showing signs of favouring Sterling as centre-forward ahead of Jesus before Sane's injury.

I remain extremely sceptical that Pep favours Jesus there. Aguero might get hooked after 70-75mins, but I really don't think Jesus is going to start ahead of Aguero for that run of fixtures.

Whilst Aguero is an FPL legend, he does not appear to represent good value for 12.0m, especially when we have the choice of Sterling over him. Sterling will play more minutes and outscore Aguero by season's end, assuming he stays fit. Aguero has played over 2,500 mins just once in the past 6 seasons, either due to injury or because of Jesus. There is also no way to fit him in, when we have Mo, Mane, Sterling, Kane, KDB/Son.

Premium must be reliable for a captaincy. I know he can get a return even just play 20 minutes. But we have another beter option. Look at GW1, we never know whats in pep head..

No way can a manager accomodate all 3 of salah sterling and kun without screwing defence which still has value with Taa digne Zinchenko etc. If you saying going instead of Sterling then bad idea due to Kun getting less pts for goal cs and getting subbed early. Plus last season I would have finished in top 10 and oushed for title if I just had sterling instead of Kun all season. So I will be just avoiding this hottopic which wise managers ahould as well if they like to learn from my mistake

Jesus out injured, Had Kane, seems to be playing deeper, Kun has better fixtures, so in he goes, sacraficed Ceballos to Aston Villa 4.5 Mid, didn't have the extra 0.1 for Cantwell, saved a wild card for later, good deal. 🙂

My 1 year old has had him in his FPL team since the start.
Although after his argument with Pep he’s pondering moving him on.

What to think about Ceballos? Worth keeping or switch to Mount? Thoughts?

        Is he nailed on?
That question could apply to both players as well

        4th mid I'd go Mount/Cantwell/Neves, 5th mid I'd go Ceballos/McGinn/Dendoncker.

Why? I am likely to finish in the top 10k but am not there currently. Plenty in a similar boat. At this stage luck has a huge part to play. It is like looking at who is top after just 4 hands of poker.

Add in that a lot of these people have been using chips their scores are largely irrelevant. Any player with at least top 10k aspirations should be looking to overhaul 99% of them.

Captain counts as 2 players, triple captain as 3. Hence the 12,08.
On average 7,38 players played. 23,34 points scored after hits being deducted.
