International Football

Which FPL assets are on international duty and when do they play?

A number of key Fantasy Premier League assets will not be on duty with their respective countries during this first international break of the season.

However, the main bulk of top-flight players are in action between now and Gameweek 5, which is why we have assembled a detailed list of who is involved and on what dates.

Following the first-ever summer Cup of Nations tournament, African football has reached something of a lull which will have positives for Fantasy managers.

Many of the continent’s biggest countries are not in action between now and Gameweek 5, with only friendlies and African Nations Championship, for which Premier League players are not eligible, on the calendar for CAF.

That means that both Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mané (£11.5m) will be getting a proper break from competitive action during this international break.

Mohamed Salah is not on international duty this month

Joining those Liverpool players in a genuine rest are Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), Salah’s compatriots Ahmed El Mohamady (£4.5m) and the suspended Trezeguet (£5.4m) while Mané’s international colleagues Cheikhou Kouyaté (£4.9m) and Watford’s Ismaïla Sarr (£6.4m) are also without a match until their next Premier League commitments.

Ghana’s England-based players are also fixtureless during this break, only an African Nations Championship game, which means Jordan Ayew (£5.1m), Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m), Daniel Amartey (£4.5m) and Christian Atsu (£5.4m) don’t have international duty either.

The same goes for Cameroon and Brighton defender Gaëtan Bong (£4.4m) as well as for New Zealand and Burnley’s Chris Wood (£6.3m).

Crucially, both of Manchester City’s strikers Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) and Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) won’t be representing their countries during the international break.

Neither one of Manchester City’s recognised centre-forwards will play for their country in September

The former, like compatriot Lionel Messi, has not joined up with Argentina as they play two friendlies, while Jesus is suspended at international level.

Not surprisingly, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson (£5.8m) remains absent from the Brazil setup as he still has work to do on the calf injury picked up against Norwich in Gameweek 1.

Surprisingly, neither Willian (£7.0m) or Fernandinho (£5.3m) have been included in the Brazil squad for their upcoming fixtures, although that probably boosts their chances of starts in Gameweek 5.

As per usual, it is the American and Asian nations whose players will be racking up plenty of air-time during the international break.

Jiménez has a very busy international break and may come back later than his colleagues

Willian’s Chelsea colleague Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) will still be on international duty in the early hours of next Wednesday morning when the USA take on Lucas Torreira’s (£4.9m) Uruguay in Missouri.

That takes place just a few short days before Chelsea travel to Wolves on Saturday September 14, although Arsenal don’t play Watford (away) until the Sunday of Gameweek 5.

Around a similar time to the USA friendly, Mexico and Argentina will be going head-to-head in Texas.

In the small hours of Wednesday morning, Raúl Jiménez (£7.4m) could be in action with his country having made the squad once again, and could be facing any number of Nicolas Otamendi (£5.4m), Manuel Lanzini (£6.5m), Giovani Lo Celso (£7.4m) and/or Roberto Pereyra (£5.9m).

Meanwhile, centre-backs Davinson Sánchez (£5.5m) and Yerry Mina (£5.6m) have commitments with Colombia in Florida at 2am on Wednesday morning ahead of Gameweek 5.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has pulled out of the England squad with a back injury

West Ham defender Fabian Balbuena (£4.4m) has a long journey ahead of him over the international break as he travels 6,000 miles to Kashima to face Japan with Paraguay, before a trip to the Middle East for a meeting with Jordan.

Newcastle attacker Miguel Almirón (£5.9m) has managed to miss out on that itinerary, while Southampton’s Maya Yoshida (£4.5m) will be in action in the early hours of Wednesday morning as Japan face Myanmar.

There are also a number of Premier League assets who have pulled out of international duty because of injury problems.

For example, Paul Pogba (£8.5m) has pulled out of the France squad with ankle problem, to be replaced by Arsenal’s Matteo Guendouzi (£4.5m). There is still no N’Golo Kanté (£5.0m) available for Didier Deschamps’ men as he also struggles with an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, the France manager has eased the concerns of those in possession of Sébastien Haller (£7.5m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m) as neither of them made the cut for international duty despite decent form, although the latter recently picked up a hamstring injury anyway.

After years of calls for his inclusion, Aymeric Laporte (£6.5m) was finally selected for the French squad but is now dealing with a potentially long-term knee injury after Manchester City’s win over Brighton in Gameweek 4.

Meanwhile, Pogba’s Manchester United colleague Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m) pulled out of the England squad on Tuesday afternoon with a back complaint. That leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer potentially short in the full-back areas for the Gameweek 5 meeting with Leicester, as Luke Shaw (£5.4m) and Diogo Dalot (£4.9m) are both out too.

Laporte could be facing a long time on the sidelines

Matt Doherty (£6.0m) was originally selected for the Republic of Ireland but pulled out with knee problems, while compatriot James McCarthy (£4.5m), now of Crystal Palace withdrew without an injury, referencing only his recent return to first-team action.

“I have spoken at length to James [McCarthy]. He has recently moved to Crystal Palace and is only back playing. James is completely free of injury but the intensity of the Switzerland game was always going to be too much for James and we discussed that.” – Mick McCarthy, Republic of Ireland manager

Norwich centre-back Grant Hanley (£4.0m) has pulled out of the Scotland squad as the injury problems in Daniel Farke’s defence continue, while Antonio Rüdiger (£6.0m) is still not considered fit enough for a return to the Germany squad.

His club-mate Mateo Kovačić (£5.5m) is also in the physio room now, having sustained an Achilles problem ahead of Croatia’s upcoming matches.

“Mateo Kovacic has been diagnosed with inflammation of the Achilles tendon grip on his right leg, which is why he cannot compete for Croatia’s upcoming games against Slovakia and Azerbaijan.” – Croatia official statement

Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) pulled out of the Nigeria squad after missing Gameweek 3 although returned from injury in Gameweek 4 so he is likely to get a rest.

Moise Kean has been ommitted from the Italy squad for this international break

Finally, Everton striker Moise Kean (£6.8m) has been left out of the Italy squad, along with Nicolò Zaniolo, as a punishment by manager Roberto Mancini.

The pair were were criticised for arriving late to a team meeting at the Euro Under-21 Championships earlier this summer, which may have led to this omission from the senior squad.

Either way, it does mean Kean will be free from international duty ahead of the Gameweek 5 meeting with Bournemouth on Sunday September 15.

“I’m sure they will come in handy later on. I don’t like leaving them behind as punishment. They are still young. We gave them a great opportunity and we hope this helps them going forward. They must learn to behave well. Professionals must always behave well.” – Paolo Maldini

Need to pick 3 mid priced forwards if I go for the WC:

    Best 3?

    1) Barnes
    2) C. Wilson
    3) Haller
    4) Pukki
    5) Jiminez
    6) Abraham

If I was starting now I'd go Haller Wilson Barnes

Same with me, think they can be enough to fill the gaps over the season. Maybe Pukki over Barnes but still think Barnes has had a terrific year so far with 13 goals. Can see that continuing with the upcoming fixtures.

Think fixtures overstated - 3 of next 5 away for a start. I’d only pick Norwich as juicy. Everton Leicester and Villa could all easily blank them. It’s Burnley.

Still Pukki over Barnes for me.

Judging from last season Chris Wood will soon start getting his fair share and that will eat into Barnes returns. The split between them feels unsustainable. Wood was an equal if not better option last season.

5 key stats better than wood. Goals, xG and xGI are key for a striker. Barnes is killing it in 2019.

Hi guys, can I please get your opinion on the following? Current squad is

    Pickford (Button)
    TAA, Digne, Zinchenko, Wan-Bissaka, (Kelly)
    Salah, Sterling, Mount, Martial, (Dendoncker)
    J. King, Pukki, (Greenwood)

I have £1.8 in the bank as well. Would you:

    A) Martial and Wan-Bissaka out for KDB and Tarkowski for a -4 hit, or
    B) Wild Card?

Feel like the squad is not quite ready for a wild card, but would like to see your opinions as well. Cheers!

      A sounds good to me.

I think you are too heavy in defence

Hi Peter, I agree with you there. I opted this season to go for better defence since last season it was all about the defenders in the beginning and was hoping for something similar. It didn't pay off. When I wildcard in the future, I plan to only keep TAA and Digne with some cheap options.

I would say do a now and then unload your defence gradually. If you think you are not covering the ground then WC!

I would suggest don't do anything right now. If you take a -4 and then KDB (or indeed any of your other players) get injured you'll be in a difficult spot. Also, given that both AWB and Martial could potentially be fit by the next GW, you might want to consider using your FT to upgrade King?

I say this as someone who is increasingly wary of taking hits. I know they're a part of the game and some people swear by them, but they just never seem to pay off for me.

Hi Will, I see your point. With KDB constantly rising in price I thought I would bring him in sooner rather than later. King has been a flop for me though and would love to upgrade, I am considering Haller as an option. Either way, will wait until the IB is over and I see if further injuries are a factor.

I have taken the -4 hit before on a few occasions and so far it has always paid off for me 😀

I am leaning more towards taking the -4 hit. I just can't trust Man Utd at the moment. If James continues playing the way he does right now, I think he may be my only Man Utd cover. Unless some major turnaround happens and all of a sudden all their players perform consistently well.

Because PL is priority right now until CL is in the later stages and Sterling is first choice with no obvious replacement for his position.

Because it makes the most sense. I'm not Pep and I don't know how they have been training, but if Sterling is clearly first choice and in favor, you play him for the games with most importance. He also fills a fairly crucial role as the LW fwd and they can't afford to not play him. Bilva is just a different type of player and he's the most logical replacement.

All the PL games are super important and are the main focus right now.

In the PL he could no doubt.

Neither Mahrez nor Bilva have the qualities of Sane or Sterling.
              They are completely different players.

    A) AWB, Mina -> Digne, Matip (-4)

From your experience, how many times wc was really useful and paid off as you were planning to?

    1. Valar(Keith)
      • 14 Years
      4 years, 7 months ago

Last year I kept my WC till gw 15 or so.. Had a perfectly good team and had no issues with it. Knew I had to use it soon so I acted extra smart and got rid of Salah etc along with most of the template and ended up ruining my season. Infact thats happened every year since fpl scrapped the 1 WC rule ie 1 WC valid all season instead of splitting them up into 2 halves. Decided I'll WC early this year and its worked out well so far.. Ie my WC team from last week is still en vogue and more expensive than most of my ML competition

      1. Valar(Keith)
        • 14 Years
        4 years, 7 months ago

I WCed out Perez, Robinson, laporte, Jota, King, Kane, donks and got in the likes of TAA, Sterling, Haller, Barnes, Cantwell, Lundstram etc so I'm pretty happy

So the necessity of wc can be a negative factor for your team. Is this what you say?

I also think sometimes we need to get rid of the idea of wc.
Only if things are going terribly wrong imo

        1. Valar(Keith)
          • 14 Years

I'd prefer the game if there were no WCs yes. Carefully planning moves and teams just to then change it all via WCs never made sense to me and I always messed it up. This year I've gotten rid of it and will now play slowly and carefully. WCs never sutied my playstyle especially since fpl raised me on the hardcore rules ie keeping WCs all season. They then added a second WC and chips and I've been struggling to adjust ever since.

Yup. Keeping it long term stopped making sense around 2012 or so. I still stubbornly stuck to keeping it until this year though. Feels so much better after getting shot of it. Lol. Only problem is I need to button down the hatches with late transfers and less risky punts early this year since I won't have a WC to get me out of trouble. I also play hitless so I don't know how il go 30 more games without a hit unless I play very carefully. Fun Times lol

      B) only since its TAA over VVD. Theres nothing between the other 4 options since they are all equally good/punty so if b gives you TAA go for it.

Noone is essential.. But TAA was part of the reason I played my WC. He and Digne are the only 2 defenders in the game who i don't mind if they concede early since they offer so much in attack that they could get returns in any game.

I'm waiting to see who plays LCB when they both start together. Whoever plays better there could be more nailed. Not every right footer can play LCB well so if pepe has a favorite I'd bet on that person seeing more minutes. Both should start 4 out of 5 games on average though considering fernandinho is their main competition

    What to do with Ceballos?

Like many, I took the gamble to bring him in off the back of his performance against Burnley. Passed the eye test, and looked an absolute steal at £5.5m. Was woeful away at Liverpool, and lost his place for Spurs. But fixtures look amazing.

    Stick or twist?

And if twist, who to? McGinn looks the obvious candidate to bring in (no money ITB)

Would you WC this team? Please see my thoughts below:

    Ryan/button
    Taa, robbo, digne, zinch, Lund
    Salah, sterling, kdb, cantwell, cabellos
    Pukki, Jota, greenwood

Ryan - better options imo, Pope being one

Robbo to VvD seems a better pick or downgrade to save more funds.

    Cabellos- too uncertain on starts.

Jota- looks a bad pick so far with better options.

Forwards: Abraham, Haller, barnes, aguero all hard to ignore...

      Robbo > 4.0
      Jota > Haller

Easy fixes. You have Salah, Sterling, KdB, Digne, TAA. With those 5 I don't think it's worth WC'ing.

You have the same problem as me - very heavy on defence. I plan to only keep TAA and Digne and use 4.5 defenders to bulk it up. Free up some funds for up front. Get rid of Jota for Haller. Ceballos will start racking points once he nails a regular starting spot.

Looking for a cheap LaPorte replacement. Trying not to be boring with a Lundstram pick, especially since his schedule is quite unfriendly until winter.

Masuaka - Nice long run of fixtures, but how certain is he to keep his place?
Dunk, or one of the other Brighton lads?
Lowton or someone else from Burnley? No attacking potential, but fixture list is terrific. Who's nailed on?

Would you pay the extra for Tarkowski over Lowton/Pieters ?
        Play him every week ?

Getting tired of having WB. Emerson is another option.

                  Thanks Christina. Have Zinchenko.
The one I want is TAA ( becoming a must have ?)but would need to sacrifice Zin. But with his fixtures... seems stupid.
Question is, how key is it having a pool defender ?
Another idea is Tark and then Adrián in goal.

Agree with the threat and passes the eye test, but don't think I want to stretch the extra 0.5 for bench fodder. I want to afford a full set of cheapish forwards.

It makes it so stupid that all this ruckus is just around melanin production. Nothing else as thats what decides the color. But still surprised how reverse rascism never caught up when a white player screwed up like using word 'pale pink pig' to denote them

    Pope
    AWB - VVD - Digne - Zinchenko
    Sterling (c) - KDB - Salah - Martial
    Pukki - Jota

    Bench: Button, Greenwood, Lundstram, Dendocker

    1 FT, 0 ITB. A or B?

    A) AWB > Matip
    B) Jota > Wood/Wesley/King/Ings

If you were picking a plan, which route would work for you? Looking to strengthen squad.
    A. Upgrade Vvd to TAA which still leaves enough for Dendoncker to Ceballos (or lower).
    B. Keep Vvd. Focus on upgrading Dendoncker to 6.2mid or Gwood to 6.2fwd.
    C. Upgrade Zinchenko to TAA (double pool def) , but leave a weak bench.

B because it has the most impact on your starting players.

You chose VvD over TAA. Stick now. Like for like transfers are really inadvisable when you have more pressing concerns.

    Haller - King

    Heaton - Pukki - Lundstram - Dendoncker. 0.6ITB.

Cheers - it's pretty close tbh. Moura definitely the priority to shift on, and KDB probably too good to ignore for the next 2.

BUT - I can see them rotating a bit vs Watford off the back of playing in Ukraine Wednesday.

    Contemplating a WC:

    Heaton > Pope
    AWB > Kelly
    Zinchenko > Guilbert
    Coleman > Digne
    VVD > TAA
    Greenwood > Abraham

    1. Reckoner.

      Would leave me with:

      Pope
      TAA | Digne | Lundstrum
      Salah | Sterling | KDB | Ceballos
      Abraham | Haller | Pukki

      Woodman | Guilbert | Dendonker | Kelly

Ceballos / Lundstrum / Guilbert / Dendonker rotating last spot (Kelly too if he keeps his place)

To be honest I've already done those exact moves for a -4 earlier in the week.

What's tempting me with the WC is really want Digne & TAA, along with fear for Zinchenko after the international break. Could see Mendy / Cancelo getting gametime.

Let’s talk City defense. So no one is completely nailed on in Pep’s team but how likely are Zinchenko and Ota to get rotated?

    Zinchenko - Cancelo looming?
Ota - Fernandino and Walker, would they actually play CB?

Stones should be fit by the end of IB, no?

    My current team
    Pope
    TAA Digne Zinch Montoyo Lundstram
    Sterling KDB Salah Mount Perez*
    Pukki King* Greenwood
    1FT 0.1mn ITB
    Which to do?
    1) Save FT play Montoyo over Perez and then maybe downgrade to Cantwell and upgrade King to Haller/Abraham/Jiminez
    2) Perez to James/Trossard and get punty and avoid price drops

      2 with Trossard for me
Not a good sign when the player is taken off in before match & dropped in next match (Perez) which coincidentally results into team doing well (Leicester looked way more threatening without Perez)
Also, price drop is a point with him.

Re Trossard, I really like him. Kinda feel i should have stuck with him instead of falling to Mount because of City fixture (on WC last gw)
