More Norwich injuries as Palace get another clean sheet at home

Crystal Palace 2-0 Norwich City

Goals: Luka Milivojević (£6.7m), Andros Townsend (£5.7m)

Assists: James McArthur (£5.3m), Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m)

Bonus Points: Milivojević x3, Joel Ward (£4.5m) x2, Vicente Guaita (£ 5.0m) x2

For the third away match in a row, Norwich were knocked by an enforced defensive change in the first half.

The Gameweek 4 trip to West Ham saw Christoph Zimmermann (£4.5m) taken off with a foot problem, the Gameweek 6 visit to Burnley resulted in groin injury for Alex Tettey (£4.5m) and it was Ralf Fährmann (£4.4m) who drew the short straw at Crystal Palace.

Coming into Gameweek 7 with concerns over a groin problem, and Tim Krul (£4.5m) ruled out for a couple of weeks, the German goalkeeper started the match but had to come off after conceding a penalty in the 21st minute.

“Ralf Fährmann felt something after his first contact with the ball. He saved a cross and felt the pain again and had to come off. It’s not easy when two of your goalkeepers are injured and you have to make a change early in the game, but Michael McGovern was concentrated and focused.” – Daniel Farke

Fährmann came into Gameweek 7 with an injury and was forced off early against Palace

While there is no update on Fährmann’s present condition, a long-term absence for him, with Krul out too, could see Michael McGovern (£4.0m) become the only starting goalkeeper at his price point.

He came close to securing clean sheet points at Selhurst Park. Entering the field in the 22nd minute he was eligible for them as he played 68 minutes – but was finally beaten in the 88th by Andros Townsend (£5.7m).

So many absences for Daniel Farke’s men, especially when they are picked up during their away matches, is making it hard for us to truly assess Norwich’s capabilities on the road.

“At this level, as a newly promoted side and with so many players injured it’s difficult to dominate a game. You have to help yourself when you’re on the front foot. Each and every game is important. Of course, our biggest concern is the injury situation. It is a difficult situation but we must work on the small details. The only way is hard work.” – Daniel Farke

Pukki is now without a goal on the road since Gameweek 1

This 2-0 defeat extended Teemu Pukki‘s (£7.2m) goalless run away from Carrow Road to three in a row, without an attacking return on the road since the Gameweek 1 defeat at Liverpool.

The Finnish international did have a one good chance against Crystal Palace but was largely kept quiet by centre-backs Gary Cahill (£4.5m) and Martin Kelly (£4.1m).

That said, the attacking midfield triplet of Todd Cantwell (£5.0m), Marco Stiepermann (£5.4m) and Emi Buendía (£6.0m) looked lively for spells in the first half, fading in the second.

Cantwell, who, despite his best efforts, is yet to register a single attacking return away from home this season, went close to ending that run of bad luck but an excellent sliding block from Kelly denied him.

Cantwell was more of a goal threat at Selhurst Park than Pukki but is still yet to get attacking returns away from home in 2019/20

By all accounts both Pukki and Cantwell still had chances between them in Gameweek 7 which may be enough to convince their owners to hold onto them for next weekend.

Gameweek 8 brings Norwich back to Carrow Road, where they have averaged 2.7 goals per game this season, while Pukki and Cantwell have scored 13.3 and 7.7 points per match in front of their own fans respectively.

Meanwhile, upcoming opponents Aston Villa are yet to keep a clean sheet on the road in 2019/20, conceding a total of seven league goals across three away matches since achieving promotion into the top-flight.

“The players didn’t let me down today, they tried everything and gave their heart. We just weren’t effective enough in using our chances. Carrow Road will be a fortress again next week. We have to go through this difficult time together.” – Daniel Farke

Lewis hurt his elbow at Crystal Palace on Saturday

Farke will be hoping he can receive some positive news on the injury front this week as his squad still contains nine FPL flags.

Encouragingly, he got Max Aarons (£4.4m) back from injury against Crystal Palace, who slotted back in at right-back after a two-game absence.

“Max Aarons was solid. It was important for him to have these minutes and to be back. I was pleased with him. It’s the first piece of good news in several weeks that he is back. We need the quality and experience of everyone as quickly as possible.” – Daniel Farke

However, Farke will be sweating over Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) who fell on his elbow at Selhurst Park and is reportedly at risk of being ruled out long-term with a broken arm.

“I’m a bit more concerned about Jamal Lewis because he fell on his elbow and that could be a major injury. Ben Godfrey got cut and was bleeding a lot, but nothing more.” – Daniel Farke

Former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has made the centre-back starting spot his own at Palace

Crystal Palace increasingly becoming a side worth trusting in their home matches, especially at the back.

In four league outings at Selhurst Park this season they have conceded just one goal and are unbeaten there since April.

Were it not for Diogo Jota‘s (£6.2m) late goal in Gameweek 6, Palace would have clean sheets in all home matches played in 2019/20.

That might encourage interest in the likes of Cahill and Ward although the next three visitors to south London are Manchester City, Leicester and Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Kelly was back in for the injured Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m) although it’s hard to say if he’s nailed on to start every match considering that the former Liverpool man is reportedly not going to be out for long.

“Mamadou Sakho is injured, but hopefully it is not an injury which will keep him out for months, so we’re very fortunate in that area. Of course, there are areas of our team where the competition for places and ability I have to replace injured players is a lot more hazardous.” – Roy Hodgson

Palace will be without Milivojevic in Gameweek 8 through suspension

However, trusting Palace’s attack continues to be a tricky exercise. Luka Milivojević (£6.7m) had been goalless before this game and while he scored from the penalty spot (where else?) he will now miss Gameweek 8.

That may be of some encouragement to a West Ham side likely to be without Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) for at least the next few weeks.

The central midfielder picked up his fifth yellow card of the campaign in Gameweek 7 so will now miss the next match.

“He’s enormously valuable, that’s why he’s captain of the team. He’s been a massive influence on and off the field, particularly on the field, with the way he plays and his understanding of the game.” – Roy Hodgson

Without him on Saturday afternoon, the Eagles may have to work extra hard to add to their two away goals scored this season.

Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m) will naturally be turned to for threat, even if he has just one goal in his last 19 at home.

The Ivory Coast international was instrumental in the win over Norwich. He was the one who played the ball into James McArthur (£5.1m), who on the penalty, while it was Zaha’s movement that helped him set-up Townsend’s late clincher.

Crystal Palace XI (4-5-1): Guaita; van Aanholt, Cahill, Kelly, J Ward; Schlupp, Kouyaté (Townsend 70′), Milivojević, McArthur (McCarthy 79′), Zaha; Ayew (Meyer 90′).

Norwich City XI (4-2-3-1): Fährmann (McGovern 22′); J Lewis, Godfrey, Amadou, Aarons; McLean, Leitner; Cantwell (Roberts 81′), Stiepermann (Drmic 66′), Buendía; Pukki.

    The Review : GW 7

Greetings everyone, welcome to the latest edition of The Review. Here’s an overview of how things stand in the FPL stratosphere at the moment:

    1) Teemu Pukki’s points per game at home vs points per game away (~13 v 3.25) clearly needs further introspection. When I delve deep into the data, the statistics show that this variation in points is self-explanatory. At home, Pukki is averaging 4 shots inside the box per game (to 1.75 away), ~1.75 big chances per game (to 0.5 away) and 0.75 big chances created per game (to 0 away). Pukki’s xGi (expected goal involvement) at home of ~86 mins (to ~274 mins away) further explains this glaring disparity.

    2) As someone who follows numbers very closely, the stark contrast I notice in Wolves 19/20 v Wolves 18/19 from a defensive point of view is very worrying. Wolves have conceded triple the number of big chances this season than they did at this stage last season (12 v 4), hence the xGc (expected goals conceded) has nearly doubled (5.5 to ~10). Shots in the box conceded have also witnessed an alarming rise of ~46% (39 to 57). Whether this is down to the Europa League factor or second season syndrome, this is a problem that needs to be addressed by Nuno very quickly.

    3) This seems to have become a regular feature of my articles, but I can’t seem to stop myself from raving about Manchester City’s attacking numbers. With De Bruyne having already created double the number of big chances than anyone else has done this season, their attack seems to be on a completely different level right now. If you think their attack was frightening last year, then this season they have already recorded ~30% more big chances than they did at this stage last season - which could be put down to De Bruyne’s unreal creativity as suggested above. Sterling still is ranked top for big chances in midfielders and has by far the best xGi (expected goal involvement) of all midfielders in the league. With Wolves’ defensive frailties highlighted earlier, the City attacking options are primed to haul and hence are in my opinion, the best captaincy options for GW 8.

    4) Missing big chances seems to be the flavor of the month. If you’ve just had an appalling GW, look away - this isn’t for the faint hearted! Abraham had 3 big chances against Brighton, but was wasteful in front of goal which means that he has now missed all 5 of his previous 5 big chances. Callum Wilson’s conversion rate for a change regressed to the mean, with the Bournemouth forward finally missing a big chance that came his way. Like Abraham, he had 3 big chances come his way too and was unlucky not to haul like his numbers suggested.

    5) At the other end of the spectrum lie Chris Wood and Dominic Calvert Lewin who have now scored in each of their previous two games, which comes as no surprise to me having seen their recent numbers. Both Wood and Calvert Lewin are joint top for big chances over their past two matches for all forwards. Aguero is the only forward who rivals the duo for xGi (expected goal involvement) over this period. Both will fancy their chances when Burnley meet Everton at the weekend.

    6) They say that every light has a shadow and if Chris Wood is the light, then Ashley Barnes has been the shadow. While Chris Wood has accumulated 5 big chances over the past 2 GW’s, Barnes hasn’t recorded a single one over the past 4. Their numbers seem to be heading in different polar directions, and with so many forwards putting forward a case for selection in our FPL teams, Barnes might be on borrowed time.

    7) Newcastle's xG (expected goals scored) of 0.05 in their 5-0 loss vs Leicester was the lowest to be recorded in a single game this season. Newcastle is a prime fixture for FPL managers to target for clean sheets right now, with Newcastle having by far the lowest xG of all teams this season. They also remain the only team in the Premier League not to have recorded a xG of >~1 in any of the 7 games so far. Leicester, meanwhile continue to impress defensively and are now ranked best for xGc (expected goals conceded), big chances conceded and shots in the box conceded over the season, which is all the more impressive given their opening early fixtures.

    8) Another team which is showing signs of improvement defensively is Chelsea, who are ranked best for xGc (expected goals conceded) and shots in the box conceded over the past 2 GW’s. Options are a plenty in the Chelsea defence, with Tomori a bargain at £4.6m and the full backs offering attacking threat. Azpilicueta, as highlighted last week continued to impress and created a big chance against Brighton. He also has the best minutes per baseline bps ratio of all Chelsea defenders over the past 2 GW’s so is likely to get bonus whenever Chelsea are to keep a clean sheet. Alonso, meanwhile also created a big chance and was unlucky not to score from a big chance himself.

Data taken from UnderStat and FFScout. Thanks for taking the time out to read patiently, I hope you enjoyed the read! Lastly, with a heavy heart, I’d like to announce that real life commitments are such that I will unfortunately struggle to find the time to compile a thread/article in October and November, so The Review is temporarily taking a two-month hiatus before I am back to writing again in December. Having said that, I will continue to post whatever little bits of information I find interesting on my Twitter handle - thanks for the love!

For those only holding KDB as their City attacking option, what are you doing for City's upcoming home fixtures. Doubt we'll get anything from Pep so that means everything else may well be pure speculation.

So are you planning to get someone in for this week's game? Sterling? Kun? Mahrez perhaps?

    Hi all,

What would be the ideal wildcard team ? This is what I have for now, any comments ?

    Pope / Button
    TAA - Ota - Soy - Lunds - Rico
    Sterling - KDB - Son - Cantwell - Dendoncker
    Vardy - Pukki - Abraham
    1.5 INB

    Rico to chelsea def ?
    Is Aubam a must have ? Sterling/Pukki to Mahrez/Aubam ?

Wouldn't want to start Cantwell every week, though good option for some fixtures and first on bench.Maybe upgrade Dendo to McGinn/Yarmo (prefer the former but latter fixtures better)

Auba definitively great to have but not essential, Vardy is a very good alternative with the fixtures.

          Soyuncu (6) Mount (6) Son (5) and Aubamayang (9)

10 points gained as well as some value preserved!

Rough: brought in Tielemans for Lanzini but forgot to set lineup before lock out, so wasted transfer especially since I’ll bench him vs Liverpool
Smooth: 63 points with Tielemans benched I had King starting for his 12 points. McGinn Mount Auba and Kdb all attacking returns

smooth: -4 for McGiniesta, Tammy and Trent and took out 3 players who scored 1 point each (Digne, Barnes, Lanzini)
rough: captained Tammy for yet another captain fail. Made a promise to myself I will only captain KDB from now on (cue the injury). Red arrow to 700k. Feel team is good, but it's boring. Been bored for years tbh.

Rough: I had Josh King since GW1 and now transferred him out for Abraham. Unlucky really. This GW King only had one shot and one chance created and got a goal and assist, whereas Abraham had 3 big chances and 2 chances created and blanked.

Smooth: Also got in Mount for D.Silva. Captained Sterling.

Rough- Took a -8 to make these changes. 1st hit of the season.
          Out- 23 points.
          Ryan (4), Coleman (6), Ceballos (1) (fair enough) + King (12). -8
          In- 10 points - 8.
          Pope (1), Otamendi (1), Mount (6) + Abraham (2).
          74k-> 141k.

Seeing Coleman + King do so well especially was very rough as I had been patient with them up to this.

There are tough games ahead for Liverpool, and Mane always looks sharper in those tough games than Salah, and also I could spare 1.0 m for investment in other areas ?

        KDB injured
        Adrian soon to be replaced
        AWB ill

And only 1 FT available. What should I prioritise ? Not keen on taking a -4.

        A) KDB > Mahrez
        B) Adrian > Pope
        C) AWB > Otamendi

I guess I should wait until last minute because 1 or 2 of them could start this weekend.

I made the incredible moves of Ryan & Coleman > Fabianski & Aurier last GW, not only did Ryan score 6pts and Coleman the same with an assist but Fabianski gets a nasty hip injury and looks out for GW8 and Aurier gets himself sent off with his red against Southampton!!

What to do here? Do i keep Aurier and bench for 1 week (Lundstram would deputise who does have a decent fixture vs Watford) or get rid of him now?

Then just Fabianski > Kepa maybe? (no other Chelsea defence and obviously amazing fixture run)...i have 0.5ITB. Am also considering using my Wildcard, any thoughts very much appreciated, thanks.

            Current team :

            Fabianski* / Button
            TAA / Otamendi / Aurier* / Lundstram / Rico
            Salah / Sterling / KDB / McGinn / Dendoncker
            Abraham / Pukki / Barnes

            1FT - 0.5ITB

Wildcard team should i hit the button? :

            Pope / Button
            TAA / Otamendi / Tomori / Lundstram / Rico
            Salah / KDB / Mount / McGinn / Guendouzi

Below 3.4m should get you down.

Otherwise big rises very possible. You need to be averaging min 50 pts per week if not time for new hobby. Raise that average to 60 over next few weeks then up to average 65 by Xmas, then higher again in new year. Easy with green arrows and a top 10k finish

Each week I’ve been happy enough with my team but I’ve been slowly dropping down the ranks (1.8m currently)

              Pope
              TAA / Digne / Lund
              Salah / Sterling / KDB / Cantwell
              Tammy / Pukki / Haller

              (Mings / Rico / Dendonk)
              2FTs 0.1ITB

Time for something a bit more adventurous?

              A. Salah + Haller to Auba & Mount (with Pukki to Vardy next week)
              B. Simple Digne to Soy/Pereia/Tomori/Ota and re-evaluate after international break?
              C. Something else?

If KDB has a slight groin issue and doesn't play for a GW, is it really a big deal? most will have Cantwell first sub at home to Villa...

Yeah, if out for 1 GW, its a no issue.

Pep will be sensible withdrawing him from next Premier League match, and from Belgium- allowing him 19 days to recover for Palace away in GW9.

To some it won't be an issue, but to others it could be.

It's not ideal if you have built a squad with Cantwell as your fourth midfielder, or if De Bruyne is your only attacking coverage from City.

Ben Dinnery update on Twitter says he trained as normal. So all a non issue really. Pep rotation is still the biggest threat to his game time tho.

1 week not but if he misses two I would definitely punt on another position.... for me the move should work our cost neutral and I have a wild card. Don’t feel two concerned about this tbh

Which is the better long term option?

1- Vardy and Otamendi (extra funds will sit ITB)
              Or
              2- Auba and Tomori

Uber cheap defence worth it for a strong front 7? looking at:

              Tomori / Lowton / Soyuncu / Lundstram / Rico

              Salah / Sterling / Son / Mount

              Auba / Pukki / Abraham

significant downgrade elsewhere to afford that though.

Is Sterling and Haller > Mahrez and Auba for a hit crazy?
I'm languishing at 1.6M OR and really feel like shaking up my attack.

Getting Mahrez? For a hit? By dropping Sterling? Dunno if its crazy, but certainly looks crazy 🙂

Really struggling with what to do with this lot with 2 FTs and 0 in the bank. Don’t want to burn a FT. Any suggestions?

              Pope
              TAA - Digne - Ota
              Salah - Sterling - KDB - Cantwell
              Abraham - Haller - Pukki
              (Button, Hanley, Rico, Dendoncker)

KDB out of the Wolves game and int. break. Likely to miss Palace too. Pep will confirm tonight.

Very annoying. Tough to know what to do with him, because the casuals will sell, sell, sell. But how much will he go down?

              If KDB is confirmed out,

              A) KDB + Haller > Auba + Yarmolenko for -4

              B) play Cantwell and save the FT?

              Full team atm:
              Ryan

              Mane Sterling (C) KDB Mount
