Guide to Fantasy Rugby World Cup 2019

It’s time to start fine-tuning your Fantasy Rugby squad ahead of kick off on Friday, and here is everything you need to know to win your pool.

Make sure you join the FFS Fantasy League before you read any further!

The Superbru Fantasy Rugby game is simple to play, but with a sophisticated scoring system that it’s important to understand before picking a squad.

As well as points for tries and kicks, players are rewarded for other aspects of their contribution to the game, such as metres gained, defenders beaten, tackles made, and scrums and lineouts won for the forwards.  There are full details of the scoring system here, but it’s designed to be a fair reflection of the contribution made by each position.

Outside Backs still tend to be the highest-scoring players, with lots of metres gained, defenders beaten and the potential for tries, whilst the Back Row players can also contribute significant points thanks to the various forwards-only rewards, as well as tackles made and ball-carrying.

A key consideration is the fixtures, with some teams playing twice in certain rounds and others having a bye, but the importance of this can be overstated by some people.  The All Blacks play twice in Round 3 for instance, but with one match on the Wednesday and another on Sunday, they will almost certainly make 15 changes to the starting lineup reducing the chances of your players featuring in two matches.

With that in mind, I think it’s better to concentrate on teams that are facing weaker opposition as you build your squad. I’m looking at England as one of the stronger teams with a relatively easy start to the tournament, Ireland with a fairly benign group and South Africa after they’ve played New Zealand in Round 1.  I’m avoiding the All Blacks early on because they play the Springboks in Round 1 and have a bye in Round 2.

Here’s the step-by-step guide to building your fantasy squad.

Select your Outside Backs

Given the rewards for metres gained and defenders beaten, full-backs can often rack up points when returning kicks, and it’s worth looking at the key candidates ahead of the wingers for that reason. They are usually the best bet to make captain as well, which earns you double points, and making the right decision can be crucial.

Jonny May is one of the first names on England’s team sheet, and I think they’ll be at full-strength for their opening match before resting some key players against the USA.  May or Joe Cokanasiga could bag a hat-full of tries against the Tongans, and I’ll be keeping a close eye on Eddie Jones’ selection before the Round 1 deadline on Friday.

Liam Williams should feature at full-back for Wales, up against Georgia on Monday, and he’s usually reliable for plenty of running metres and the odd try too.

Stuart Hogg is Fantasy Rugby royalty, often running the ball rather than kicking it too often, he consistently beats defenders and scores very well.  He’ll be a popular choice among the masses, and after Ireland, Scotland have some relatively kind fixtures.

Semi Radradra might be worth a punt in Round 1, as he should feature against Australia, which could be an open, high-scoring affair, and he might just make another appearance against Russia a few days later.

I might also gamble on  Tim Nanai-Williams of Samoa, with Super Rugby pedigree and a kind opening fixture against Russia’s second-string team.  Put the captain’s armband on him if you’re feeling particularly brave!

Pick a kicker

Only your designated kicker will earn kicking points, and this is a critical selection that can make or break your team.

Owen Farrell is the obvious man for Round 1, with England up against Tonga and I predict that Farrell will be the most reliable point-scorer in the opening couple of rounds.

Handre Pollard is another strong pick, and I’ll likely bench him in Round 1 before handing him the kicking duties in Round 2 for the Boks’ match against Namibia.

There’s a chance that Beauden Barrett will play at full-back for the All Blacks, which could yield more points in open play than most fly-halves, but his kicking can be erratic and Richie Mo’unga might take kicking duties anyway.

Select your back row

A strong back row can often make the difference – most people will select all their backs first, and then hit the team limits whilst selecting the forwards, but big ball carriers can often be very high-scorers, and you won’t want to be limited in your choice.

Billy Vunipola is a shoo-in for me in Round 1, and possibly even a captaincy shout as England should be steamrolling Tonga on Sunday.  It means I’ll likely have to forgo Manu in the centres to keep to the 3-player limit per country, but hopefully the gamble will pay off.

CJ Stander is usually a go-to fantasy rugby pick and he’ll no doubt be popular, but he’s looked a little off the pace and I’m overlooking him this time.

Ardie Savea is worth considering for Round 1, despite the All Blacks’ difficult fixture, and I’ll certainly be including him later on if selected against teams like Canada and Namibia.

Amanaki Lelei Mafi could be a great pick in Round 1, particularly if Japan get the World Cup underway with a big win over Russia.  The former Rebels Number 8 has always racked up points in Super Rugby Fantasy, and he’s going into my team.

If selected, Isa Naisarani will take on a lot of the ball-carrying duties for Australia, and I suspect he’ll outscore the more popular David Pocock and Michael Hooper, who are renowned for causing havoc at the breakdown but not necessarily with ball in hand.

Italy have a nice fixture against Namibia, and whilst plenty of people will pick Sergio Parisse, I’d favour Jake Polledri over his captain and he could be a great pick if you fancy Italy’s chances against Namibia and Canada.

Fill out your backline

We’ll need to wait for confirmation of the lineups before committing to our centres and scrum-halves, but names to look out for in midfield include Manu Tuilagi, Kurtley Beale (particularly if he plays full-back), Garry Ringrose of Ireland, Jonathan Davies for Wales against Georgia and look out for France who normally play at least one centre on the wing.

At scrum-half, Gareth Davies loves scoring tries in World Cups, whilst players like Faf de Klerk and Will Genia will often look for a run rather than simply passing every time.  I’ll be selecting Faf for the bench, ready to come into the lineup when South Africa play Namibia.

Select Locks

Leone Nakarawa feels like a strong pick for Round 1 with a chance that he plays twice.  He’s a key player for Fiji and should get his hands on the ball.

I’m steering clear of Alun Wyn Jones, currently the most popular lock in the game – he’s a fine leader and excellent communicator, but you don’t get points for whingeing at the ref and getting him on your side.

I like James Ryan of Ireland and Brodie Retallick will certainly feature in my squad once he’s passed fit and the fixtures ease a little, but generally I’ll be looking at players from teams that have an easy fixture where I haven’t used up my full allocation.  Also keep an eye out for locks selected in the back row – Arthur Iturria is a candidate for this for France.

Pick a Hooker

You can only have one starting hooker, which makes it more interesting than other games where you can just fill your front row with three running hookers.  Malcolm Marx is a go-to man here, whilst players like Dane Coles, Guilhem Guirado and Jamie George make plenty of yards with ball in hand.

Props

By the time you get to the lowest scoring position group, you’ll need to be filling up on players from the least popular teams.  Again, look at the fixtures and look for players that tend to be ball-carriers for their teams, or who make plenty of tackles.

Tadhg Furlong ticks both boxes, whilst Sekope Kepu, Stephen Kitshoff and Kyle Sinckler are all worth considering, and I might take a punt on Campese Ma’afu in Round 1.

So there you have it, the winning formula, with the usual caveats that you need to check the starting lineups, which will all be displayed on Superbru as they are announced.

Join the FFS league and enjoy the World Cup!

Any tips for round 2 Mr Klopptomist?
6 transfers to be tailored and I haven’t got a clue what I’m doing.

I’m guessing Italy, England & SA are the best point mines of the round? England’s 10 changes aren’t helping as they’ll chew up transfers playing hockey Cokey between rounds. Don’t really want any Jocks or Taffs as they blank in the next round. I guess Japan v Ireland could be an exciting game, but I still don’t know how to flesh out a whole starting 15.

    Any tips most welcome?.....

I’m no expert by any means, but I’ve basically gone for picking players that are in the already announced line ups. Italy, SA are the big mismatched where we already know who is playing so I’ve got a couple of those each. Also think Arg will roll Tonga who I think will still be recovering from the Eng match. Scotland should beat Samoa so Hogg is in for me.

My actual transfers were Radradra, Williams, Parisse, Creevey, Farrell, Tupou -> Minozzi, Cokanisaga, Hooper, Arg hooker whose name escapes me, E Jantijies, Campagnaro

Basically taking out my non-players except Nakawara who I can bench

            No worries, man.

I brought in Mapimpi and Am from RSA, captained Mapimpi. Also the italians, Bigi, Budd and Allan (needed a kicker). And Louisi from Samoa as I needed to fill a non-playing spot. Doing well, on 63.5 for this round. Waiting for the RSA v Namibia game and my captain.

Saw that you did really well in the FFS scout page results section. Glad I got the gold cap last week as I won't do as well this week. GL mate and lets meet here before week 3. Have a good fantasy weekend!

I have got triple Ireland but that’s more by accident. I suspect it will take a similar patten to the Scotland game but with Japan hopefully being less garbage

With big changes and players rested for England and S. Africa, its very worthwhile to check the lineups and bring players into your team that way. Those two teams and possibly Italy, Argentina and Ireland are who I am targeting this round for big points. I am going to the S. Africa v Namibia match on Saturday, should be fun.

1 hour until the deadline! Hope I can hold onto to my number one spot in Japan and number two in the FFS league, 268 OR.

    Any round 3 tips?

This one is a tricky one 🙁

France and NZ have a double, but NZ’s squad depth is ridiculous they can afford to make 15 changes between matches. I don’t really trust any of France’s line up v US. Was hoping Penaud or Guirado got the nod - looks like they’ll play v Tonga.

    2. Klopptomist Scott Jelly
      • 6 Years
      4 years, 6 months ago

My current thinking is to get in S Barrett, Read, Ioane (c),
Kolbe, Guirado (even though benched v US) and McGrath (Ire SH).

Will wait until last possible minute for line ups though. Having seen what SA’s second team did to Namibia’s scrum I’m expecting a lot of points for the NZ pack!

Edit - Italy to Canada’s pack but same principle 😀

        Cheers mate!

Yes, its hard to trust the France lineup, might go with Fickou (centre), or Ire's Ringrose. Also looking at Baille from France at prop because not much else on offer and I need one. Maybe Taavao-Matau but like you said will prob be rotated.

Getting in Read and S Barrett myself as they are filling holes and will be great, even for one match.

kolbe a good shout but I already have Mapimpi.

Do you think ENG will put out their first team against ARG? Japan as well vs Samoa? Where do you see SA vs Italy going?

        GL!

          • 6 Years
          4 years, 6 months ago

I think Eng and Jap will play their strongest teams. Jap’s schedule is kind and they have no motivation to rotate - bonus points could decide the group. If England beat Arg they’re pretty much through too.

I saw you had Mapimpi - I was blocked getting him because of my SA FH double up, and regretted it! 😀 who are you thinking of captaining? You’ve nailed the last two 🙂

          1. Yankee Toffee
            • 9 Years
            4 years, 6 months ago

Prob cap Mapimpi or Ioane if I get him. But if I do get him that means I would have to bench either Johnny May, Matsushima or Mapimpi which I truly cant...tough choices!

The captain picks have kept me afloat after some poor benchings on my part, namely my Aussies.

            Who ru capping?

              4 years, 6 months ago

If I was going to bench one of them it’d be Matsushima but you may have more joy buying someone else.

Probably Ioane. The thought of a potential double v Can and Nam is too juicy to pass up even if he might not play both...

              I benched G Davies (22) for Murray (1.5) this week 🙁

Gonna have to go with Mo'unga or I'd have to make B Barrett my kicker as they are both listed as FH. And Barrett won't be taking the majority of conversions and penalties.

So what are we thinking this round? Scotland and Wales have a DGW. So many of my players not starting atm. Don't know if 6 transfers will do the trick.

Tricky. Wales’ hard game is up first and difficult to guess who’ll get both. Scotland’s decent assets are getting rested v Russia.

Mismatch alert says NZ and SA again. Will be hoping for NZ line up before tomorrow! Struggling for 6 too. Will pop back once I’ve had a proper tinker!

Also going to look at ditching ARG, Tonga, Samoa players who aren't in Round 4's starting 15 because they cannot qualify for the knockout stages.

And with that logic in mind, will prob keep most teams that have already qualified, ie) FRA, ENG, and 99% SA and NZ

We have 8 transfers for next round btw 🙂 that’s where I’m going to clear out - I count 9 players in my 23 who are either going out or are getting a game this round because they’re not first choice...

Also a distressing lack of Wales in my team atm. Hogg (what a let down) for Williams currently 7th transfer!

Ah ok, that's good news. I got rid of Hogg last round. I'm looking at the Scottish bench or possibly Darcy Graham because they need to put 4 tries past Russia for a bonus point (and then of course win against Japan), so they will be pushing hard for tries, not goals or pens. Russia are very scrappy so I'm hoping Scotland can move the ball out wide.

Aus's Tooma looks a good shout as he is playing oop.

Do you think any of England's first team will play? ie) May, Vunipola, etc

I would expect Eng to have a strong team - winner tops the group. I’m toying Graham v Williams atm. Will probably play Matsushima over Hogg. Toomua (k) and Barrett (c) for me

Went all out on SA, Gelant as Cap and Jantiles as kicker. They put out a speedy lineup and I think they will run it up against Canada.

Also brought in Scotland's Graham and Wales, G Davies and Wyn Jones.

I benched Johnny May and played Matsushima this round as he burned me last round on the bench. Hope I haven't got it backwards, lol

Thanks very much, TM - this was along the lines of what I understood xA to be. I guess Opta judged Coleman's assist to be a low-xG shot rather than a high-xA pass.

after a poor first two weeks, have managed to pull it back to 40 Worldwide (although if he had seen some of your earlier musings, i would have clocked on to some obvious stuff which would have moved me top 10).

I was very positive about a climb up the rankings this week, until about 5AM this morning, when I lost Savea, Read and Barrett (all likely starters against a depleted italy side) with no backup at all

Im thinking I definitely want a player on the winning team, usually I would go for a forward because they've got guaranteed points for the team stuff. I would've gone for Ardie since he racks up running points too. But SA forwards are obvious given the mismatch with Japan, not just all round, but especially in the forwards and those points

Thanks for all your discussions here (particularly Klopptomist & YT), I don’t have any idea what I’m doing in the Rugby world and still don’t really understand formations. I’m never quite sure if I’ve doubled up on players in the same position, or if I even have a kicker?!!:;” Or who to VC & Vice Kick. Just Reading your discussions has been really helpful, so many thanks from me.

Seeing all the QF teams published already should be a big help this time round. Having to wait until the last hour in previous rounds has been a total and utter pest.

If you’re able to share any tips and advice for the QF’s this evening that would be great, and good luck to you all in your respective mini leagues!

Just sat down to take a look now 🙂

I’m backing Eng, NZ, Wales, SA here. I think England will try and batter Aus so not sure there’ll be huge value in their backs. Ireland will kick to NZ so Barrett and the wings should be decent options. The risk with picking Barrett is that you’ve no kicker. He’s the top scoring fly half even without kicks though...

SA pack *should* be fairly dominant, but as JT says their back row don’t really run with it. I’ll be getting at least one second row (4/5) for potential line out steals, as they’re significantly bigger than Japan. I am tempted to buy and bench the Japanese FH as cover in case they win!

A flying under radar pick is Daly at “centre”. He’s actually been playing 15 - where you get a lot of time to run with the ball. I’ve had players outscore try scorers based on the amount they’ve run! Will post my team and transfers once I’m settled

Cheers KST, I'm hunching that SA and NZ are the more likely to rack up higher scores, with the ENG and WAL games potentially much tighter.

I have 7 players in my squad not playing, 3 on bench duty, no SA starters and only Lienert-Brown & B. Barrett starting for NZ. What key Saffa and Kiwi players you going for that we hope won't be rotated straight out again in a potential SF.

Do you think the Japanese band wagon might be coming to and end?
Despite being amazing entertainment, they've benefited from an awful lot of dodgy ref calls, subtly obstructing potential tacklers and kickers, not rolling away properly, slight passes forward not getting picked up or reviewed.

I think all of the current starting XV for nz and sa are first choice, bit more risk for NZ centres and wings imo. Scott Barrett threatens Whitelock potentially

I’ve gambled on Eng going big, NZ and Ireland being an arm wrestle.

      Williams or Kolbe (c) Reece
      Daly (vc) Tuilagi
      Farrell (k) Davies
      Hooper Read Vunipola
      De Jäger Whitelock
      Furlong Guirado Sinckler

Is how I’m lining up. Playing players on the bench are Matsushima, Leitch, Ringrose, Dupont so I’m a tiny bit covered in case I’ve predicted my results wrong

Based on my googling about rather than any kind of genuine knowledge, Im going with the hunch that Wales are shot and I’m expecting them to lose their next 2 games. Injuries ruling out players, starters playing with broken fingers and twisted ankles, plus the potential of emotional and physical drain from that France game - I don‘t think I’m interested in any of them.

The England Fronts seem to be respected and gameplay set up for Curry & Underhill (whatever that means?£&@?) but perhaps also for the Kickers? Are Ford & Farrell expected to be hoofing downfield a lot? Even without the kicking, B.Barrett is talked up like a god, so think I’d need him instead.

Seems incredibly annoying that Farrell(12), B.Barrett(15) & Mo’unga(10) all start, could all be signed into your team, but the game will only let you play 1 of them. Am I getting that right? How freaking annoying is this!!!!

My team is starting to look like this:

    Mtawarira Mbonambi Sinckler
    Whitelock. Itoje
    Underhill. Savea. Curry
    Aa Smith. B.Barrett
    Tuilagi. Lienert-Brown
    May. Mpimpi. Nkosi

But before I start hitting the transfer button, is this even do-able? Am I about to sign players in the same position that I can’t then actually select? How do I get Etzebeth into that kind of line-up?

  18. Yankee Toffee

In the Superbru game, you can play:
    2 props
    1 hooker
    2 Locks
    3 Loose Fwds
    1 Flyhalf
    1 Scrumhalf
    2 Centres
    3 Outside Backs

So, you can only play 1 flyhalf and kicker, thats why I got Mo'unga instead of B Barrett because Barrett doesnt kick the conversions and penalties.

Etzebet is a lock and you can play 2/3 so just bring him in for one of Savea, Curry or Underhill (if you want him) and make sure he isn't on the bench.

Also, do you really want 2/4 outside backs to be from RSA? I have 1 from each team and will make the bench decision on the day.

    GL!

Did okay, didn’t get the captain right again but hey ho - I’m holding onto second spot in my mini league 2 points off the top, so everything to play for.

My hunch remains that Wales are shot, and with an extra day recovery I’m thinking NZ have it in them to rack up some points.
Do you think there’ll be more points in this game than the final? I’ve already got B.Barrett, Aa.Smith & J.Adams from the published starting lineups, what would your top picks be from that game?

Any tactical take on how the Final might play out? I’m guessing that if SA can make it attritional they could grind out a win, but it’s really hard to get that England performance against NZ out of your head.
Every position in that England side looks strong.

How you getting on with your mini leagues?
