Another home blank for Abraham but chances continue to arrive

Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Marcos Alonso (£6.2m)
  • Assists: Callum Hudson-Odoi (£6.0m)
  • Bonus: Alonso, Hudson-Odoi x3, Kurt Zouma (£4.7m) x1

Chelsea continued their impressive start to the 2019/20 Premier League season with a hard-fought victory over Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United, a result that lifts Frank Lampard’s side into third.

The Magpies came into the game having secured upsets against ‘big six’ opposition in the current campaign – namely Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur – yet the compact system deployed by Bruce fell marginally short of its intended ambition with Lampard’s side battling to a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.

Although another clean sheet for Chelsea will be pleasing for owners of players such as Fikayo Tomori (£4.7m), who has emerged as a starting budget defender under Lampard, this was an afternoon of sheer disappointment for owners of the highly-popular Tammy Abraham (£7.7m) – the most popular selection in our Gameweek 9 captaincy poll with over 30% of the vote.

Abraham squandered a number of golden chances, including hitting the bar and being denied when in on goal with just DeAndre Yedlin (£4.4m) to beat, but the American defender put in a remarkable block to deny the England striker any attacking returns.

In a Gameweek where a number of non-premium forwards attracted considerable captaincy interest, including Callum Wilson (£8.0m) against Norwich who also blanked, Abraham’s performance will be a source of considerable frustration for managers who handed the mid-price striker the armband.

This was the England striker’s fourth blank in five home matches this season.

Although Abraham was unable to get on the scoresheet, defender Marcos Alonso (£6.2m) delivered a goalscoring performance that was a reminder of the Spaniard’s attacking abilities, even if he is unable to reach the standards he has previously set for himself in the Premier League.

Alonso’s goal came after Callum Hudson-Odoi (£6.0m) set up the defender, and the performance from the 18-year-old will have given his manager food for thought after yet another assist.

This was Hudson Odoi’s second successive start for the Blues in the league, and including his substitute appearance against Brighton in Gameweek 7, the forward has now registered three consecutive assists in the Premier League.

Given the competition for places in Chelsea’s squad alongside the form that the likes of Willian (£7.0m) are exhibiting, it is difficult to determine whether Hudson-Odoi is likely to retain his starting berth in the Chelsea XI.

Yet at a price of £6.0m, the England international’s performances are certainly worthy of monitoring for Fantasy managers who may be looking for a differential to complement the likes of Abraham.

Lampard confirmed how pleased he was with Chelsea’s attacking performance in his post-match comments.

We were upbeat, we had urgency, the tempo was good, and that got us the win. We want to score goals. You can see the fans – I think they’re happy with what they’re seeing at the moment. We want more.

Although lately it has been Mason Mount (£6.8m) who has been grabbing the headlines with four goals and an assist so far this season, in the game against Newcastle the Englishman was unable to deliver any attacking returns and was substituted by Lampard in the 64th minute at the expense of Christian Pulisic (£7.2m).

Ross Barkley (£5.6m) left the pitch in the 43rd minute, with Mateo Kovacic (£5.4m) coming on in his place, and Lampard confirmed after the game it was an ankle injury and it will be assessed in the coming days.

It’s an ankle injury. We need to assess it and see how bad it is.

For Chelsea’s defence, although Newcastle seldom troubled their backline, a second clean sheet in two games and just one goal conceded in their last three will be promising news to those managers in ownership of their defensive assets, although Tomori was booked late on to reduce his score to five points.

Whilst Chelsea will be ruing both their misfortune and inefficiency in front of goal, this was a defeat for Newcastle that underlines the disinterest in their players as Fantasy options in 2019/20.

A lack of attacking returns has become a familiar tale on Tyneside in the current campaign, and unless Bruce is willing to compromise the Benitez-esque tactical principles whilst playing away from home against typically ‘bigger’ sides, the likes of Joelinton (£5.8m) are unlikely to prosper within Newcastle’s set-up – despite the Brazilian scoring against Spurs in Gameweek 3 when a similar counter-attacking system was deployed away from home.

Easier tests await though and Bruce confirmed in his post-match comments that the upcoming run of fixtures for Newcastle will be hugely influential in determining the outcome of their 2019/20 campaign:

We’ve had a really tough start. We’ve now got a run of games against teams who are going to be in and around us. Hopefully, we can get a few points.

A fifth successive win for Chelsea points to the momentum they are gathering under Lampard, and although today marked a blank for Abraham, those managers in ownership of the striker should not be deterred the lack of returns in today’s fixture.

The Englishman was both the creator and recipient of a number of chances throughout the game, and given his price, he is likely to continue to offer exceptional value as an attacking option at an in-form team who now sit third in the Premier League table.

Chelsea XI (4-2-3-1): Kepa; Alonso, Zouma, Tomori, Azpilicueta; Jorginho, Barkley (Kovacic 43′); Hudson-Odoi (James 90+2′) Mount (Pulisic 64”), Willian; Abraham.

Newcastle United XI (3-4-3): Dubravka; Clark, Lascelles, Schär; Willems, M Longstaff, S Longstaff, Yedlin; Saint-Maximin (Gayle 85′), Joelinton (Atsu 83′), Almirón (Carroll 70′).

Players involved in Chelsea v Newcastle United sorted by expected goals (xG)

Abraham was the second-highest underachiever of xG (-0.66) of all players involved in Gameweek 9, behind only Aston Villa’s Anwar El Ghazi (-0.73).

Players involved in Chelsea v Newcastle United sorted by chances created (CC)

Hudson-Odoi created the most chances (five) of all players on the pitch, whilst also registering the highest baseline bonus points score (23) of all midfielders in action on Saturday in Gamweek 9.

Players involved in Chelsea v Newcastle United sorted by attempts on goal

Willian posted some eye-catching numbers, creating three chances and matching Abraham for attempts on goal.

Alonso’s total of six penalty box touches is the second-highest among FPL defenders in Gameweek 9 so far. Since his return to the Chelsea team in Gameweek 5, no defender has registered more touches in the opposition area.

Team-wise, Chelsea won the joint-most aerial duals (24) of all teams in action on Saturday. This again underscores Newcastle’s weakness in the air – only Norwich have allowed more headed chances than the Magpies (29) this season.

Those who still has Salah , what will you do if he blanks tonight . Surely 12.4 price tag blanking 4 in a row will be just too much.

The blank wouldn't be the issue, it's if he blanks and mane continues his form. The mane naysayers always see let's see if he can keep it up, it's been like 25 matched surely that is form that's being kept up

I will keep. Weird enough, but Salah has become somewhat of a differential for me in my ML...and his ownership still high regarding overalls

I'll keep whether he blanks or not, as long as his stats are good, just like last season before he became 'essential' again.

I’ve transferred Salah out after this GW for mount. Frees up more money and looking to get Mané in a few weeks. Hoping for a Salah hatty, Mané blank and a goal from Mata today as no pool defence.

Depends on how he looks, and how he performs - a blank in isolation isn’t enough information imvho

On direct attacking returns, his rival Mr. Mané does appear to be reaching a level of output that all but the highest echelon of elite FPL players would find unsustainable (19 G 3A in his last 23 starts)

Delving deeper into the statistics also shows a trend that could be interpreted as ‘over performance’ in comparison to Salah - statistically it is actually quite one sided between the two in Salah’s favour

(Despite being 2 FPL points behind Mané season to date - Salah actually BETTERS him for a host of underlying stats - XG, Non-penalty XG, XA, XGi, Shots on target, Penalty Box touches, Goal attempts, attempts in the box etc etc...)

And with Salah also having the traditional FPL points boosters of a share of set pieces and penalties, you’d have to think he is well positioned to continue delivering at his quite frankly astounding level of consistency since joining liverpool - in (84 league games) he has only ever went more than 1 game without an attacking return on 7 occasions

5 of these patches were simple 2-game droughts, and after all 5 he scored a goal in the following game

The sixth was a 5-game drought from GW27-31 last year, which was followed by 5 goals & 3 assists in the subsequent 6 matches

This is his 7th such lean spell - fascinated to see how it ends 🙂

But Mané is putting him under pressure like never before, no doubt there - he’s a truly fantastic forward - his multiple premier league hattricks for Southampton before he even arrived at Liverpool confirmed as much and he is definitely in red hot form

It’s a fascinating battle that emerged between them - Salah is a genuine FPL Heavyweight, and Mané has managed to elevate himself firmly into that bracket over the last 6-8 months...

It’s scary how bad it could get for Utd today if both sides play to current form (and ability)

Your response to my advice (and the reasoning I detailed to you) not to sell was just so memorable - I believe your exact words were along the lines of “KDB won’t be back after the IB and I don’t want Perez coming off the bench” - and accompanied by something along the lines of “that’s why my OR is so much better”

Well maybe I recall incorrectly, but there was definitely a reference to rank used alongside justifications of the decision, which to me is usually a warning sign that the actual logic is not holding water...

Haha the bitterness runs strong 🙂

Performance is primarily a function of decision making, and decision making is a primarily function of the logic that underpins the decision

I think we both know what type of logic underpins the performance 😉

I also consistently said either it’s a serious injury being kept hidden or it‘s a load of rubbish to get him a rest.

This is why I had a plan to get him straight back if it was the latter which it ended up being. You see I had the tenacity to attack the opportunity to get ahead and had a safety net if it couldn’t work out. This is the kind of adaptability that can send you up into the cool ranks rather than meandering your way up slowly if at all or even going backwards in the low low ranks.

You should be using your obsession with me to learn from it not to get upset

Lol I actually tried to help you see the madness in your logic - I specifically pointed out the fallacy in your logic but to no avail:

“ “KDB is unlikely to be put straight back in for two easy league games either side of a UCL game due to severity and frequency of his groin injuries.” - This is directly contradicting the official club statement, hence my point that KDB sellers are taking Pep at his word selectively, for what suits”

But alas the advice once again fell on deaf ears - I think you secretly acknowledge this though right?

After all it was only about 10 minutes ago you posted the lament about an inability to ever actually make any progress, or something along those lines... it’s all down to the decision making dear boy 😉

Taking people at their word when they have no history of integrity is a big mistake.

I also asked for help from FPL professionals which meant the post wasn’t for the likes of those with 6 figure ranks 😉

It’s not the person your taking, it’s the logic dear boy 🙂

                          For example:

Here is an illustration of bad logic: ”Keeping KDB is just plain stupid unless you have premium cover for at least the next 2”

And here is a corresponding illustration of better logic: “If the injured player is in AAA form, underpriced, and one you want back the next GW - it really isn’t - unless you’ve set your team up with no bench, which is a different issue”

                          Spot the difference 😉

Was there a free transfer impact? Was there a loss in value? Was there even perhaps an exposure of a wider flaw inherent in decision making that perhaps drives a frustration?

I think a major reason of disappointment this season are the triple ups.

Teams clearly expected to win end up losing and the setbacks are reflected in premium assets getting 2 pointers only.

Not saying premiums ain't worth the buck, some are but having 6 players from 2 teams certainly isn't helping managers.

Speading money on attacking players from different teams spreads the risk & has worked pretty decently for me this season.

I've been checking my team against a lot of 'well performing teams' at https://www.anewpla.net/fpl/report/

And nearly every time, the different in my overall score Vs their overall score is essentially the difference of my total captaincy score Vs their total captaincy score.

As in, if my captain picks matched theirs, I'd have the same points

It's the main thing telling me to just keep doing what I'm doing as I'm getting 50/50 captaincy calls wrong nearly every single week. Eventually the bad luck will turn.

I'm not saying they are exact quality(or positional) comparisons but could it be like
        CHO = KDB
        Mount = Sterling

Either will do but most likely Mount will score more goals/points by the end of it

If same quality then both would needed. However even in value terms, is a front 3 advisable? I've Tomori, who is also great value, but there are other decent picks at that price point in defence. Not so much in midfield.

It’s a budget version of Sterling (CHO) vs KDB (Mount)
CHO is very wide and has to make himself get involved, which he has been really impressive at since returning but Mount is always involved because that’s his role as the CAM

        1. Liber

Only Mounth dosn't pass as much KDB does and shoots more. So not really KDB. More Lampard style. Of course Mount is more central and is a little closer to the action, however he just ain't getting into bonus.
Both still good value. CHO is getting even more nailed as Mount.

I’m a Chelsea fan and honestly CHO is a “hazard” type fpl player.

He beats players, gets fouled, creates chances, BPS will love him why he got 3 with just an assist yesterday

Hard to say who is better for fpl, potentially CHO due to BPS. Mount won’t get many BPS because he’s the one who closes people down, fouls them losses possession as he attempts to drive at players

This was the England striker’s fourth blank in five home matches this season.

      Lies, damn lies and statistics

      His 5 home games included
29 mins against Leicester who are tight defensively
79 minutes against Liverpool who although aren't amazing defensively this season, still aren't wide open

He scores 2 at home against Sheffield

Blanked against Brighton - fairly tidy defensive team

      Hit the bar against Newcastle

I feel like this whole "struggling at home" narrative is very stretched.

Depends what you do with the 2 mil. Vardy is clear favourite in isolation.

        Vardy easily

Nobody scored more goals since Rodgers took charge

I'd rather have Vardy right this second.

        May well have both soon.

Jimenez could be a great differential but is a bigger gamble. Vardy is fairly reliable which is why he costs 2m more.

If the 2m can be spent wisely and you aren't chasing ranks, Jimenez is a good choice.

If you want to play sensible and safe then Vardy picks himself

So Otamendi apparently got a kick while on international game.
I'm thinking Pep could actually put him back into starting 11, because Wessely is a big strong guy..
Not saying Ota will get points though. What do you think?
