Pulisic a high risk pick with potential for high reward

The unpredictability of Fantasy Premier League in 2019/20 continues to baffle many of us in the game.

Each passing Gameweek brings more and more differentials to light as the tried and tested options largely fail to deliver.

Gameweek 10 started with Southampton conceding nine at home and ended in ghoulishly bizarre fashion with Tim Krul (£4.5m) registering 16 points, despite conceding three goals.

We also saw three hat-tricks being scored, two of which were by players owned by 5% or less.

A shout out must also go to this column’s picks as we saw a clean sweep of Fantasy returns in Gameweek 10, Marcos Alonso (£6.3m), Youri Tielemans (£6.5m) and Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m) all delivering.

Let’s hope for some more luck this time around. Here are three differentials to consider for Gameweek 11.

Christian Pulisic

Pulisic ran the show for Chelsea as they won 4-2 at Burnley

Price: £7.2m

Ownership: 4.4%

GW11 Opponent: Watford (A)

It may be somewhat of a risky recommendation to tip a player that has only made four league starts this season but Christian Pulisic (£7.2m) clearly has talent.

Since making his debut for Chelsea, the United States international has at times looked jaded and arguably not played to his very best.

That’s not surprising, especially when his pre-season was interrupted with Pulisic featuring in all of his country’s knock out games during the CONCACAF Gold Cup over the summer.

This may partly explain why it’s taken him longer to adapt to life in the Premier League.

However, among all midfielders in Gameweek 10, he had the joint-fifth most touches in the penalty box (nine) and the joint-second most amount of goal attempts (five).

With plenty of creativity to boot, he completely ran the show against Burnley and was comfortably the best player on the pitch, hat-trick aside.

That was a remarkable turnaround for a player that had only scored 18 FPL points before last Saturday.

Pulisic has done more than enough to warrant another Premier League start in Gameweek 11 when Chelsea face Watford.

On average, the Hornets have conceded 2.1 goals per game since the start of the season and have largely struggled against top-six sides.

Quique Sanchez Flores may have finally stopped the rot at Vicarage Road, with back-to-back home clean sheets, but I think they will struggle against a free-scoring Chelsea team inspired by a determined Pulisic.

Anthony Martial

Martial is slowly coming back into the Fantasy picture

Price: £7.6m

Ownership: 4.8%

GW11 Opponent: Bournemouth (A)

At the start of the season, Anthony Martial‘s (£7.6m) out-of-position status seemed too good to be true.

FPL managers had been handed a midfielder from a top-six club, priced under £8.0m and playing as a centre forward.

Martial then duly delivered Fantasy returns in each of the first three Gameweeks of 2019/20, before injury ruled him out of the next six in a row.

However, the French international finally returned to the starting line-up against Norwich – celebrating that fact with a goal.

Of course, Martial did also missed a penalty, but it’s good to know that he has become a viable option again with United’s run of generous fixtures.

During the 3-1 win at Carrow Road, Martial had more touches in the final third (33) than Pulisic did at Burnley and received more passes in the opposition half (23) than Mohamed Salah.

This strong involvement for United bodes well for him and, provided he stays fit, he should retain his place as a first-team player, whether that’s playing out wide or straight through the centre.

United next face a Bournemouth side that has improved defensively in recent weeks. After going the first eight league matches without a clean sheet, the Cherries have kept two back-to-back against Norwich and Watford.

However, Manchester United, despite some criticism of their attack of late, have six goals in their last three matches in all competitions and have scored eight times in their three previous meetings with Bournemouth.

Therefore, I would not be surprised if this match was also marked by another attacking display.

Sébastien Haller

Haller deserves a chance against Newcastle in Gameweek 11

Price: £7.4m

Ownership: 4.8%

GW11 Opponent: Newcastle United (H)

It might seem hard to justify a player that has only scored one goal in his last six league games.

There is no doubt that the early stages of a bandwagon were being formed when Sébastien Haller (£7.4m) scored three goals in two games.

Yet despite his lack of goals, he remains West Ham’s second-highest FPL points’ scorer (41) for the season and for a player within his price bracket that seems fairly respectable when considering that Raúl Jiménez has 43 points and Ashley Barnes has 36 points.

It may sound cliché but I think there is still more to come from Haller.

He is currently averaging an attacking fantasy return for every 162 mins played which doesn’t seem unreasonable for someone during his debut campaign for a mid-table side.

No doubt this could have been better had he not missed two big chances since Gameweek 1 as well.

Up next for the Hammers at the London Stadium are a Newcastle United team that currently reside in the relegation zone.

It’s just the kind of match that Haller needs for his confidence. After all, two of his last goals have come at home and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he’s able to unlock the Magpies defence and get back to scoring ways.

Fairly slim I'd say. I think Pep will select the back four he would like to play against Liverpool and, in my opinion, Otamendi is not part of that.

          Then again, who knows?

What we learnt in the runup to Gameweek 11…

    Liverpool

Klopp will be without Matip for a few weeks but Keita is an unknown with Klopp saying “we will see”. He’s unsure how he will deal with Fabinho being 1 yellow away from a ban that would be served vs City. VVD and Salah are fine.
    https://twitter.com/ptgorst/status/1190240460280942592?s=20

    Man City

No new injury worries for City, with Angelino’s early sub just down to cramp.
    https://twitter.com/spbajko/status/1190259650677084161?s=20

    Leicester City

Clean bill of health for Leicester with only Matty James out.
    https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/leicester-city-press-conference-live-3491894?22

    Chelsea

Lampard hopes to have Kante back before the international break, with him being 50/50 for Ajax. Rudiger once again won’t feature as he isn’t fit and will have to see a consultant. Barkley is out, Christensen is pretty much fit. Says it’s tough to decide who starts on the wings.
    https://twitter.com/SJohnsonSport/status/1190262901464031240?s=20

    Arsenal

Just one absentee for Arsenal as Nelson remains out, but Emery has said that he doesn’t plan to play Xhaka tomorrow either, given recent events.
    https://twitter.com/jamesbenge/status/1190258180246441984?s=20

    Crystal Palace

Sakho and Wickham have both trained in a session, whilst Guaita has trained all week. Townsend, however, hasn’t completed a session yet and is very doubtful for the game.
    https://twitter.com/MattWoosie/status/1190253165406408704?s=20

    Tottenham

Lamela is out and Vertonghen will be assessed late to see if he can feature on Sunday. Lloris is still out, Rose is banned.
    https://twitter.com/Dan_KP/status/1190250917704216576?s=20

    Burnley

Wood remains touch and go and JBG will remain out for weeks. Bardsley is a doubt Drinkwater is injury free but is missing fitness, so will need a week of full training before some U23 games to build it back up.
    https://twitter.com/TheClarets_com/status/1189914421562200065?s=20

    Sheffield Utd

Wilder mentioned that a few of his players were carrying injury niggles, but didn’t reveal who. Mousset is still a bit behind on fitness and probably not quite ready for 90 minutes
    https://twitter.com/dannyhall04/status/1189912398922166279?s=20

    Bournemouth

Brooks remains out but Gosling returns after a long period out. Stanislas is working his way back but remains out, but there are a few other non-serious niggles within the team. Adam Smith is ok.
    https://twitter.com/solentsport/status/1190199675594461184?s=20

    West Ham

Wilshere isn’t 100%, but then again, when is he? Antonio is looking at a return after the IB, Fabianski is out and Reid is slowly building to a return. Everyone else is fit.
    https://twitter.com/WHUFCFZ/status/1189951814638149638?s=20

    Aston Villa

Grealish remains a doubt and Smith will have to guage his fitness before the weekend after he picked up a knock. Someone else was mentioned as out for a month, but I couldn’t make out the name (think it was Davis?).
    https://twitter.com/FFScout/status/1190260360680558593?s=20

Edit: Indeed was Davis (Thank you Epic Fail). Jota also close to a return, with him starting training on Monday.
    https://www.avfc.co.uk/News/2019/11/01/team-news-aston-villa-v-liverpool

    Wolves

Bennett has a problem and will not be OK for tomorrow. I’d guess we could well see Dendoncker back at CB then. Gibbs-White is a doubt.
    https://twitter.com/JoeEdwards_Star/status/1190253399658418182?s=20

    Man Utd

OGS hopes to have Lindelof, Rashford and Maguire available after they picked up slight knocks and needed some treatment. Matic and Tuanzebe are set to miss out for a little while, probably until after the IB. Shaw also remains out.
    https://twitter.com/TelegraphDucker/status/1190231367369609218?s=20

    Everton

Mina wasn’t risked vs Brighton but could play on Sunday, depending on how he reacts tomorrow in training. He is the only injury worry besides Bernard and Gbamin who are out.
    https://twitter.com/RichardBuxton_/status/1190260574430679040?s=20

    Brighton

Duffy is available after training since Tuesday, but Bernardo and Isquierdo are both still out. Mooy is back from suspension, whilst Potter will also have Trossard available to him.
    https://twitter.com/BBCSussexSport/status/1189896167892631553?s=20

    Southampton

Cedric and Djenepo are edging towards returns and are training, though will likely looking more at next week than this one. RH hasn’t decided on who will start in goal yet, and will make changes elsewhere on the pitch to keep lineup fresh. Boufal and Redmond have knocks, possibly on the bench.
    https://twitter.com/Ankaman616/status/1189913711890313216?s=20

    Newcastle

Carroll is available but the game comes too soon for Ritchie and Schar who both miss out. Lejeune will continue to build fitness with the U23s.
    https://twitter.com/S_McCormick95/status/1190201682610798593?s=20

    Norwich

Krul has trained for the last few days and is ready to go. Cantwell and Amadou are doubts having only just returned to training, Vrancic isn’t ready. Hernandez is at the hospital with his partner expecting a baby, so his availability isn’t clear.
    https://twitter.com/paddyjdavitt/status/1190256769685245953?s=20

    Watford

Success and possibly Capoue (who’s not 100%) could be in contention. Deeney, Sarr, Welbeck, Cleverley and Quina are out, though Cleverley should return soon. Deeney should return soon, possibly after the IB.

Snoddy and Fornals will certainly struggle for gametime. But between Lanzini, Anderson, Yarmo and Antonio it is tough - but that leaves Haller looking the best bet again and despite the mixed start he will be an option at some point. West Ham badly need pace - and Antonio is a beast.

Dipped a little bit recently (Haller) but if Antonio gives him the little kick to reach the levels he was heading towards early on in the season, I would definitely be sitting up. Sometimes worry the service is a bit all or nothing for him, but hopefully Antonio could again change that.

It looks good that he'll be fit enough, but I too think he'll be rested. Especially as he looks good for an England call up in the next squad selection and another knock would be a blow. I know England is nothing to do with Smith but he's the type of manager that will want to see Grealish get his call up.

I don't agree. They've only kept 2 clean sheets all season and I expect that to change. When they do keep a clean sheet, he's very good for BAPS. That said, Robbo at 6.9 does seem a viable option. I just love the option of a TAA set piece landing on VVD's head 😀

    B) Wison, McGinn> Connoly, Sterling (-4)

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I’ve not seen any chat about it...

With Trossard return imminent, who is likely to drop out for him, or is it even likely that Trossard might not get back into the side (at first anyway).

I say this as somebody looking to play Connolly this week

Start Cantwell (BHA) ahead of any of this lot? Or leave him on the bench?

    Robbo (avl)
    Tomoria (wat)

VVD and Wilson to TAA and Jimenez for free?

    Would give this:

    Pope
    TAA, Lundstram, Dunk
    Tielemans, Mount, Sterling, KDB
    Vardy, Firmino, Jimenez

    (Heaton, McGinn, Soyuncu, Kelly)

Not stupid, no, but DGW is preferably.

Of course it can and does work in a SGW, but I prefer 2 bites of the cherry.

I've had plenty of success over 2 games. Loads of players play twice, it's just the likes of Pep who you need to be even more concerned about but players like Kane etc always play.

SCOUT PICKS CHALLENGE - GAMEWEEK 9 RESULTS

It was quite traumatic going back on this gameweek and reminding myself just how low scoring it was...

    ***** GAMEWEEK RESULTS *****

    1st - A Manager Has No Name (58pts) [3pts]
    Top 4% - Polar_Bear, Mookie (45pts) [2pts]
    Top 10% - IanP1970 (42pts), Lugs, The Pope (40pts), MOSF94, Scratch (39pts) [1pt]

with DaveCZ and Expected Toulouse missing out on 38pts!

The FFS Scout Picks & Differentials scored a combined total of 37 points (actually, the differentials only scored 1 point between them...) therefore alongside the top 10%, DaveCZ and Expected Toulouse also picked up an additional bonus point.

Commiserations to The_Socca_Philosopha missing out on 37pts...

    ***** THE STANDINGS *****

He's beginning to open a gap up at the top again! Your top three:

    1st - The Pope [10pts]
    2nd - Pingissimus, Vobinho, Polar_Bear [7pts]

I asked in previous article, how I pick my squad for next GWs? I've made one for gw6, couldn't see anything about the challenge before gw7-10 so I missed them. How should I re-enter next GWs? Edit the spreadsheet or what? What I'm missing? I really enjoy it and want to participate!

Hi mate sorry hadn’t seen! To enter all you need to do is reply to the post when I post (normally around 8pm - it’ll be a hot topic as well) same as everyone else. Don’t edit the spreadsheet etc that’s just for people to view results but I generally don’t post them when I’m playing catch up!

Your team looks fine. So I'd look to sort Cantwell out. Norwich fans getting on his back saying he's been poor recently and he got hooked at half-time last week. With Onel Hernandez and Mario Vrancic back on the scene, I think Cantwell's days of being a nailed on starter are over. With Xmas fixtures approaching you'll want a reliable bench so I'd suggest doing Cantwell to Dendoncker as a 'ticking things over' transfer.

    A) Maddison -> Tielemans
    B) Auba + Dendo -> Jimenez + Martial
    C) Auba + Maddison -> Connolly + Sterling

I would save, Lund and Rico great subs if Ota doesn't play and feel like Vardy is a bit of a trap, especially for -4 away to Palace, I mean I like the guy as a fpl option, I always did but can't shake the feeling Leicester have been really fortunate last two GWs.
