Everton and Spurs serve up dismal game as Gomes suffers horror injury

Everton 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur

  • Goals: Cenk Tosun (£5.7m) | Dele Alli (£8.4m)
  • Assists: Lucas Digne (£5.9m)| Son Heung-min (£9.6m)
  • Bonus: Serge Aurier (£4.8m) x3, Alli x2, Digne x1

Everton confirmed on Monday that Andre Gomes (£5.3m) has undergone successful surgery after the Portuguese midfielder suffered a “fracture-dislocation to his right ankle” in the Toffees’ 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

It was a 79th-minute tackle from Son Heung-min (£9.6m) that ultimately led to the hideous-looking injury, with Gomes subsequently trapping his leg in the turf as he collided with Serge Aurier (£4.8m).

Son received a straight red card for his challenge which, viewed in isolation, was of the cynical nature rather than anything too malicious.

The 7.1%-owned Spurs midfielder will, pending an appeal, now miss the Lilywhites’ next three league matches, returning for the Gameweek 15 clash with Manchester United in early December.

Mauricio Pochettino joined the chorus of players, managers, fans and pundits expressing sympathy for Gomes but voiced his disappointment at the decision to dismiss Son, with referee Martin Atkinson seemingly having been poised to book the South Korea international before the consequences of his tackle became apparent.

The visitors had been leading 1-0 at that stage and Everton went on to press their numerical advantage by scoring an equaliser late in stoppage time.

Asked if Spurs would appeal the red card, Pochettino said:

I don’t know. I don’t know what will happen now, the club will see if possible or not. What we cannot change is all that happened after the red card.

We are going to talk about the VAR because the VAR need to check if it was a bad tackle from Sonny and judge the action, not judge what happened after that was very bad luck for Andre. We feel very disappointed with this type of situation on the VAR. VAR to help the referee. I’m confused more with the situation. I was talking to the referee and they need help. They need to go check on the screen. They have the screen: why not?

At the end the decision because everything changed. I think the game was under control for Tottenham and I think we really believed that we would win the game at the end. The problem is playing with one less. And then we concede a goal playing with one less and it was very, very tough. It was completely unfair for Sonny and completely unfair for Tottenham.

It has since been reported that Spurs will try to get the dismissal overturned and it’ll be interesting to see what the response from the Football Association will be.

The early signs weren’t too positive, with the FA having seemingly doubled-down on Atkinson’s decision to send off the South Korean attacker when releasing a statement just after full-time:

The red card for Son was for endangering the safety of a player which happened as a consequence of his initial challenge.

Son had earlier registered his seventh attacking return in the last eight Gameweeks, teeing up Dele Alli (£8.4m) for the game’s opening goal.

The match had been drifting towards a goalless draw at that point, with the two teams serving up one of the most forgettable encounters of the 2019/20 campaign.

Everton and Spurs have struggled for form this season and there was nervousness from both teams at Goodison Park, with Fantasy managers given little incentive to invest in either side – especially in attack.

Spurs were almost non-existent going forward, registering only four shots all evening, and even their goal stemmed from a misplaced pass from Alex Iwobi (£5.8m) rather than anything they carved out themselves.

The unavailability of Harry Kane (£10.8m) was a mitigating factor, with Lucas Moura (£7.0m) proving to be an ineffectual spearhead in his absence.

The England striker missed out with illness, with Pochettino saying ahead of kick-off:

He and his family got a virus and started to feel bad on Friday night. It was impossible for him to train on Saturday and now he cannot play.

Christian Eriksen (£8.7m) was poor yet again and, with Son suspended next weekend, owners of John Lundstram (£4.8m) and co might be growing increasingly confident of a clean sheet when Sheffield United visit north London in Gameweek 12.

Alli’s goal was at least a positive and there may be a modest bit of Fantasy interest in the former MK Dons man, who has now completed three successive 90-minute run-outs in the league and scored two goals in that time.

Everton weren’t much better, with Richarlison (£7.9m) – again leading the line – carrying what little threat the hosts posed.

The Brazilian twice tested Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.5m) and fired wide in the first half, later being denied a penalty when tumbling in the box.

That was one of three claims for a spot-kick refuted by VAR, with a challenge on Son and an Alli handball not punished.

Everton’s Fantasy assets seem to be in a “don’t buy, don’t sell” limbo at present – the Toffees next face two of the most obliging defences in the Premier League and owners of Richarlison et al may be reluctant to part ways before matches against Southampton and Norwich.

An awful run of fixtures from Gameweeks 14-18, coupled with some indifferent form, may deter many non-owners from venturing near the Toffees despite their upcoming double-header, however.

There were some success stories at Goodison, with Aurier’s 88th-minute substitution meaning that he not only banked a clean sheet before Everton’s equaliser but also claimed maximum bonus points to go with it.

Lucas Digne (£5.9m), meanwhile, was staring down the barrel of a blank before his superb volleyed cross was nodded in by substitute Cenk Tosun (£5.7m) for the hosts’ late leveller.

Indeed if any Fantasy assets could take credit from Sunday’s game, it was the two defences – although the relative solidity of Spurs and Everton’s backlines, who have only two clean sheets between them in the last nine Gameweeks, was aided by the toothlessness of their opponents in attack.

Everton XI (4-3-3): Pickford; Sidibe, Holgate, Mina, Digne; Davies (Calvert-Lewin 83′), Gomes (Sigurdsson 84′), Delph; Walcott (Tosun 68′), Richarlison, Iwobi.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-2-3-1): Gazzaniga; Aurier (Foyth 88′), Alderweireld, Sanchez, Davies; Ndombele (Lo Celso 73′), Sissoko; Son, Eriksen (Sessegnon 90′), Alli; Lucas.

Did a ridiculous drunk move of Haller to Pukki on saturday.

Any interest in Jota over Jimenez?

Higher xGI I believe at the weekend, and most chances created in the game. Only 6.1m... no penalties and worse form is the caveat

Jota let me down at start of the season, I stubbornly held onto him for 5 or 6 weeks I think instead of ditching for Pukki. Keeping him and Perez have had a hugely detrimental impact on my season. That said Jota is back on my watch list now, looked sharp v Arsenal and I think he could do well in the next few weeks, nice price too.

Yeah I was burnt by him too but made the switch to Pukki GW3. Price now is very attractive, 1.1m cheaper than Jimenez. There are the obvious caveats listed, but if bringing one in this week is it too punty to go for Jota over Jimenez? Should I just go safe? 900k tank rn

Amongst forwards i believe Jimenez was top for shots in the box this GW with 8, Jota had 5 but also created 4 chances. Jota is shaping up to be a nice differential although Jiminez isn't too highly owned himself and is on pens. Jota is cheaper and fresher where as Jiminez has been played a lot lately. Both good options IMO, maybe see what you could do with the cash saved if you go Jota then decide.

He's in my team. Was risking running up a -8 with CHO cameos + weak bench, so comes in alongside Mane.

Far, far worst punts. If I could afford Jimenez, I would, but I can't. Based on history, Jim is worth the extra mil - Will that continue? Maybe, but I think there's a good chance it will get a lot closer.

The injury wasn't actually his fault! The situation was very unlucky! It was a clear yellow card, not even a red! Speedy recovery to Gomes!

In short kinda what I was trying to say. Son and Aurier both partially to blame but I don’t think the foul in isolation is worthy of a red despite the consequence (and ref obviously agreed before being swayed by consequence, as do many former players)

      • 7 Years

Stupid and reckless challenge agreed, but not akin to the Shawcross on Ramsey one for example, regardless of similar outcome.

No chance of getting the ball really and he came in late, but he was a catalyst for what happened rather than the direct cause - trip sent Gomes off balance, and when he tried to plant his leg you can see it start to happen and then Aurier clattering in front the other side whammies it the dislocation fracture home

I'm often guilty of steering away from players when I've missed the price rise, so I understand where you are coming from, but try to look at it objectively.
Top 4 attacking team, starting striker at that price on 9 goals & 2 assists playing only 815 minutes, that's 5 minutes over 8 X 90 minutes.

I assume as a short term punt while Son is out?

Could be a great shout if Son ban not rescinded. It’s a damn shame Poch doesn’t play him more over the likes of Lamela or whoever more, he’s a real quality player and moreover has delivered on several important occasions - including effectively single handedly getting them to UCL final last season in the second semi... - don’t know why Poch doesn’t play him more

To answer your question lol, yes for short term if Son is out - he should play and their fixtures are decent, but beware Spurs general form

First two fair enough - I’m doing Kun to Vardy as fixtures turning and had enough of Pep roulette. Yarmo probably also fair enough, not good to see him subbed with them losing at HT.

Kun to Vardy a logical move imo. I have brought Jimenez, Mane and Barnes in. Barnes will be Trossard after the fixture swings.

Not much to write home about in that price bracket - I think Traore, Gundogan, Snodgrass the best options.

Got 2FT and 1.6 ITB. What to do with this team?

    Thinking either:
    A) Jiminez + Ota —> Vardy + Willems
    B) Ota —> Robbo (save a transfer for next week)

Will most likely get Salah/Mane in for Sterling after next week. Plus Sterling’s on 4 yellows

    Ryan (Button)
    TAA, Soy, Lund (Rico, Ota)
    Sterling, KDB, Mad, Mount (Cantwell)
    Abraham, Auba, Jiminez

Prefer B - only because I wouldn't want to lose Jimmy at this stage.

Although if there is another route to Vardy then it might be better

Hello to Yarmolenko owners. Friendly announcement that Antonio will be back in training later this week and should be available for selection post IB. He was our best player before injury and is most effective on the right wing. It is entirely possible he takes the place of the offensively underperforming Felipe Anderson but this is the depth in attacking talent we have so take note of pelle’s willingness to hook Yarmo at half time last game.

Best moves here with 1ft and 0m

    Pope -- Heaton
Taa Tomori Lundy Rico -- Lascelles
Sterling Kdb Mount -- Cantwell Dilva
    Tammy Rashford Vardy

Planning to do one of the following moves over the next 2 gw's. What do you suggest:

    A) Sterling + Dilva >> Mane + Maddison
    B) Sterling + Dilva + Lascelles >> Mane + Robbo + Dendocker (-4) in a 442
    C) Dilva + Rashford + Vardy >> Mane + Jimmy + Ings (-4) and stick to a 343

I know. I stupidly brought in Mendy last week for Diop because I thought he was safe from Pep's rotation with Zinchenko injured, apparently not!

2 trannies, what to do? No major disasters as far as I can see - would like Mane but not sold on swapping for Salah

    Pope/Heaton
    Tomori, TAA, Lund, Söyüncü
    Sterling, KdB, Salah, Mount
    Vardy, Abraham
    (Cantwell, Kelly, Greenwood)

      Interesting start to the post.

That's a good team, bench needs work, maybe downgrade a keeper to get a stronger sub?

    Salute Lord Lundstram lol!

Had him in my team from the very beginning and will start him vs Spurs 😀

Yes did my research on him and hell, at 4.0m absolute genius pick. Pity I missed his first haul benching him...

Aguero and Cho to Vardy plus Martial for a -4?

Or can take Cantwell out instead Cho but leaves 5.9m Cho as bench fodder instead

Go for it. I’m uneasy about Martial personally - can bring in either him or Jimenez/Jota, and leaning latter

Or could do tielemans or madison instead. Or perhaps Lucas Moura ?

Moura can be a fantastic option, see my reply to someone above. V risky though w Spurs general form but same could be said of Martial!

I’d be tempted by Maddison tbh, Madds JV double is something up happy with for now I think... (triple if you count Soy, though he’s given me headaches from the bench last 2) 🙁

After pretty dismal start to the season, languishing around 1.7 mil, I've had a couple of decent weeks (76 & 84 points) and moved up to 324k but need some help.
D Silva needs to be replaced and the midfield is Sterling, Mane, Cantwell & Dendonk. Have 0.7 ITB and 2 FT. Any suggestions ?

Forwards are Tammy, Auba & Vardy.

    Thanks.

Evening all, this has probably been asked a lot but I need to do today to catch probable Maddison price rise

    Which one to bring in?

    A) Maddison
    B) Tielemans

    Thanks in advance!

Can easily afford either rn (obviously don’t know if I’ll need the £ later on, but for now, money is not an issue...)

    A) Jimenez
    B) Jota

To likely bring in alongside Vardy Abraham this week in a 343 (team linked)?

Most importantly, any reasoning welcome! Recent stats making me consider...

Jimenez is the ‘obvious choice’ - has the goals and is nailed on

I (perhaps stupidly) still think jota is great value - not sure how secure his starting place is

I am thinking of captaining Teemu Pukki. Am I mad?

I need to make some ground and figure this is a GW to try it given

    a) Im a contrarian
    b) Other teams are closely matched playing each other
    c) Its Watford

    Comments please

I am contemplating the same. Think he's due and it's a friday night game. Place could be rocking. If he doesn't deliver in that game I think he's done as a fpl asset.
