Meet the Manager #18 – Tom Freeman

A focus on pre-season research, a weekly statistical rummage and not caring about money has helped Tom Freeman achieve a truly stellar track record of success as a Fantasy Premier League manager.

During his decade long career, he has finished in the top 1,000 on five occasions and has three more season ranks in the top 10,000.

Currently at 20,000 he is well on course for another strong finish.

In his chat with Joe, Tom reveals how ignoring team value has helped him do so well. This means he leaves transfers to the last minute and is also unafraid to ditch a player who he has profit tied up in.

Keeping tabs on pre-season minutes and form is also crucial. Especially when it comes to promoted sides. This season the Fantasy Football Scout’s pre-season coverage was particularly handy to highlight the impact of budget sensation John Lundstram.

This site’s Members area has also been a regular help each week. In the customised table section he has collected his own set of data which he can quickly look at when the Gameweek ends to give him vital information about player form.

Another issue Tom, who is one of our Pro Pundits, discusses is the importance of having a midfield slot dedicated to under the radar differential picks. His current choice for this role is particularly eye-brow raising.

Late Wildcards, why 4-4-2 is bringing him success this season and long-term captaincy strategy are also covered in this latest Meet the Manager episode.

The chat with Tom is available to view on Youtube here and in the first embedded video below.

Previous Meet the Manager video interviews can be found here.

Teams looks good, id just be looking to Salah > Mane. Henderson is the pick of the keepers in your price bracket but obviously after United next week so id do it then

thanks - i doubt Heaton will play this GW though so maybe do salah to mane and heaton to henderson and next week look at shifting either KDB or Sterling for martial

Henderson is ineligible to play against United so don't transfer him in this week. Wait on Heaton injury news as he has two weeks to recover

why not? salah is injured, mane is on fire and martial is a midfielder playing as a striker... whats the issue you think?

I think Salah will be fine. He has been out of form and still only 11 points after Mane who is in the form of his life.

Don't like any United players because UTD is simply not good. Can see the temptation of going with Martial but it's only a matter of time when he gets injured again.

This is just my personal thoughts ofc. If you want to make the moves, do it! 🙂

Why not just Sterling > Mane?

Keep Salah especially if he's fit. I'm looking to bring either him or Robertson in (whichever isn't injured).

What to do here? I honestly have no clue. Will loose value no matter who I sell. Could prove vital if I decide to get any of them back at some point

    A) Mount to Martial (bought the former at 6.0)
    B) Tomori to Robertson (bought the former at 4.5)
    C) Soy to Robertson (bought the former at 4.6)
    D) Lundstram to Robertson (had the former since gw1)
    E) Save and reaccess

    Current team:

    Gazza
    TAA Soy Lundstram
    Mane KDB Son Mount
    Vardy Tammy Jimenez
    ____
    Button; Kelly Tomori Kelly

    2.5 ITB 1 FT

If I went with option A the next two free transfers would prolly be Son + Kelly -> Captain America + Braveheart

To help with the captaincy conundrum this GW, I've just done an analysis on Brighton's last 4 Home Games vs Chelsea's last 4 Away Games (assuming people are looking at City assets and Vardy)...

BRIGHTON (having played BUR, TOT, EVE, NOR):

    Goal Attempts Conceded: 33
Goal Attempts in the Box Conceded: 20
    Big Chances Conceded: 2
    xG Conceded: 2.09
    Goals Conceded: 3

CHELSEA (having played Wol, Sou, Bur, Wat):

    Goal Attempts Conceded: 46
Goal Attempts in the Box Conceded: 32
    Big Chances Conceded: 9
    xG Conceded: 6.55
    Goals Conceded: 6

This is only a brief snapsnot of both sides' defensive data, but you can clearly see that Chelsea have been giving up a lot more chances than Brighton. And the opposition were very similar for both sides during this run.

Of course, Brighton's defensive issues could impact on this and Leicester/Vardy are in red hot form. But the data shows that Chelsea will give up a lot of chances against Man City and, with City at the Ethiad, the likes of Sterling could arguably be the best captaincy choice this GW.

    1. Don Kloppeone
      • 6 Years

I was just looking at exactly this myself and also looking at attacking stats for their opponents (i.e. where most goals coming from, big chances etc).

What is interesting with CHE defence is the disparity between the home vs away and I am wondering whether we can rely on it as a trend. For example if you instead just look at CHE defence over last 4 or last 6 GWs overall (i.e. 3x Home, 3x Away), then they are actually bottom of almost every key stat for # goals, chances conceded, especially in the box which is where MCI are scoring all their goals.

I am wondering if this is therefore just showing that CHE have tightened up their act in the last few, regardless of Home vs Away and MCI may not get as much of a look in as people think...

If Sterling was playing Chelsea away and Vardy home against Brighton it would be a no brainer but now it's a tough choice.

I have a gut feeling that Sterling will do well against Chelsea. The armband is on Vardy at the moment though.

I just don’t think the stats point to CHE allowing MCI tons of opportunity.

Vardy has to be a better pick for the armband imo

Brighton will have a makeshift back 4 though without Dunk and Webster. It will be Duffy, montoya, burn and someone who hasn't played from them regularly.

      1. Jullepuu
        • 4 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

Schelotto or Balogun are the most likely replacements for Dunk in my opinion. It depends on where Burn plays in that game.

        1. PapaWengzz
          • 4 Years
          4 years, 4 months ago

Exactly. Not their regular back 4, especially if burn goes back to CB from Lb.

I think that Balogun is a pretty good cb but the fact that he hasn't been playing is worrying. I don't rate Schelotto that highly. Wasn't he just injured for a long time?

              • 4 Years
              4 years, 4 months ago

Either way, the above stats dont paint the picture for the upcoming game, since Webster and more importantly Captain and best defender Dunk was playing in all of those games.

Think there is still a case for Sterling but I agree Vardy is a safe option. Something I'm going to try and do more of is pick players based on current form (i.e. not try to intrepret stats/fixtures as much as I have been).

Mount can play out wide though, with one of CHO or Pulisic.

Really can't see Munt being dropped to the bench - he's started every game when available.

Still own Sterling and front 7 is:

    Sterling / Mane / KDB / Mount / Hayden

    Robbo*/TAA/Lund

Does anyone have a list of the total number of participants in each season of the FPL game historically? In the gameweek history it lists the overall finish for each season but without the total number or players it's slightly limited. I finished inside the top 10,000 twice early in my FPL "career" and have got nowhere near since. I'm wondering if it was because there were so few people participating so my top 100,000 finishes now are comparable.

Don’t have the exact answer but early days was around 3.5m playing I recall and now 7m. Also the statistics sites and progress of websites like this (mods - great website btw) make so much info easily available - def more difficult to break that 10k now

I would say it's too early to be reading into Robbo's situation - at this stage it could be bad and he could miss a few games or it could just be a precaution and he's back for Palace. No one knows and so speculation is pointless in my opinion.

I have 11.3m to fill the last two spots in my WC squad - who to go for?

    Gazza - Button
    TAA - Soy - Lundstram - Janmaat - *****
    KDB - Maddi - Mane - Martial - Mount
    Vardy - Abraham - *****

Currently looking at either Robertson or Jimenez, but three strong attackers means that I won't be able to play Mount vs Aston Villa next week, which I would love to. Robertson's injury is worrying, so I'm not settled on anything. Any advice is highly appreciated!

Also on WC, similar setup to you but I'll go with Sterling instead of KDB, and put in Mousset as 8th attacker, and Rico is the final defender.

I think in the interest of not giving yourself an absolute headache on benching every week I'd recommend something similar but depends how wedded you are to KDB.

Great idea, however having had KDB from the start I can't get myself to let him go anytime soon.

Currently looking at getting PVA and Jimenez in and cashing out on Mount instead. That would give me quite a good 3-4-3 setup with a fine bench for the next weeks
