Pro Pundits

How I’m planning to kickstart my faltering FPL season

In his latest Pro Pundits piece, Az bemoans anticlimactic captaincies, disappointing differentials – and his failure to acquire a certain Sheffield United “defender”.

“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.” – Matthew Syed, Black Box Thinking

Another fortnight passes, as does a rotten Gameweek and (finally!) a decent one.

Christmas is widely regarded as the season of joy – the antithesis of my own season of woe – but it does seem fitting time to reflect, once again, on my 2019/20 campaign so far.

Jamie Vardy (£9.6m), one of the main protagonists of my previous article and Fantasy Premier League top goalscorer at the time of writing, has finally come into my team and delivered me 30 points (one as captain) in two weeks.

Mason Mount (£6.8m), a player who I was rueing selling, has only managed one assist in three games (although of course, Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.8m) has managed just three substitute appearances in as many matches, and a booking!).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) has finally got me a goal and is still in place for the two best fixtures out there (Southampton and Norwich).

N’Golo Kanté (£5.0m) is back and Chelsea are already looking more solid, so I’m hoping for some more clean sheets from Fikayo Tomori (£4.8m).

Looking at my team, I believe I have reason for optimism going forward.

Of course, it hasn’t all been rosy. If I see one more mention of “Lord” John Lundstram (£4.9m), I may have to deactivate my account. It seems like myself and Andy are the only ones who don’t have the Sheffield United defender-turned-midfielder but I was put off at the start of the season due to his lack of minutes in 2018/19 and Sheffield United’s spending spree on supposedly “better” options.

On my Wildcard, the allure of a “strong” defence featuring Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m), Ricardo Pereira (£6.3m) and Nicolas Otamendi (£5.2m) – supplemented by the budget Diego Rico (£4.2m) and Tomori, who I thought was an absolute steal at £4.5m – meant there was no room at the inn for Lundstram.

I wasn’t even worried going into the Burnley game but of course, I had my head in my hands when they announced that Lundstram had scored. When I heard he had scored his second of the match, I just had to laugh. I’m still laughing now. Kind of.

I think the £4.0m defender, or a £4.5m midfielder in form, is a player who you just need to jump on at the earliest opportunity.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.4m) was one of my star players last season (although I often had to look at his points sat on my bench) and £4.5m midfielders like 2016/17-era Etienne Capoue (now £4.8m) are players you shouldn’t even be considering to put in your starting XI, but always end up coming in and do an amazing job for you. If they really go off the boil, most of the time you can sell them at a £0.4m/£0.5m profit but, for the most part, you just keep them in your team until the end of the season. They really are “set and forget”.

I should have prioritised Lundstram on the Wildcard. His ownership, position, and price rises made him too attractive an option to ignore. With a great run of fixtures coming up, a £4.0m defender who couldn’t even get a game in the Championship is now one of my most sought-after targets. It’s an amazing game we play.

I now sit at the lofty heights of a 1.2 million rank, having plunged to the depths of two million just a week ago. Having achieved a pretty tasty (and much coveted) 700k rank rise, I’m reminded of the importance of playing your own game.

The Fantasy Scout/Twitter template feels particularly strong this year. Players like Nick Pope (£4.7m), Lundstram, Mount, Sadio Mané (£12.1m), Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m), Vardy and Tammy Abraham (£8.0m) seem to be in every team that’s being bandied around. This can leave you thinking that you need some big differentials to climb the ranks.

Well actually, I’ve got most of these players, and my “differentials” in Hudson-Odoi, John McGinn (£5.8m) and Aubameyang have all failed to deliver. And yet, I was still able to get a healthy green arrow. Chasing shadows and binning perfectly good players to try and strike gold often does more harm than good.

It’s also reinforced the importance of getting that captaincy pick right. Obviously, it is unachievable for mere mortals like me, but the fact is that if I had captained my highest-scoring player each week, I would be ranked at just over 1k. That’s over a million places higher than where I am now. That, to me, is crazy.

The captaincy is something I’ve always struggled with – I can remember a handful of great captain picks over the years (Sergio Aguero‘s five goals vs Spurs, and an Alexis Sanchez hat-trick against West Ham) but actually, whenever I’ve rolled the dice (looking at you, Jesse Lingard) I’ve been burned.

This season however, it seems like you get burned when you play the logical game. Looking at my selections, it’s been an over-reliance on Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) that’s really hurt me. He’s been in great form for club and country – but this has not been turning into FPL points.

Well now I’ve seen through my plan which I had come up with weeks ago when I Wildcarded. Raheem is gone for the more reliable Mané. Can I see myself captaining anyone other than Vardy or Mané between now and Christmas? I doubt it.

City, much like my captain picks throughout my FPL career, seem too inconsistent to trust. I wonder if they are really focusing on the Champions League this year and, with Liverpool seemingly out of sight after just 13 Gameweeks, I wonder if there will be more disappointment for those that continue to back their assets with the armband.

In terms of my plans going forward, I’m putting more eggs in the Leicester basket. The Foxes don’t have the worry of Champions League rotation – and their performances and results have been nothing short of exceptional.

I’ve got to move out some of my deadwood. Hudson-Odoi has gone, and one of my favourite players in the league – a certain James Maddison (£7.5m) – is in. To fund this, I’ve had to downgrade Pereira, who has done okay for me, but is not living up to his £6.3m price tag. He leaves for the much more affordable Çağlar Söyüncü (£4.9m), who is looking like a steal at under £5.0m.

McGinn is next on the chopping block, and it’s likely that Aubameyang will be the man to fund an upgrade – after he has played against Southampton and Norwich. I’m hoping that he will deliver some solid returns in these games.

I wouldn’t be advising anyone to buy him but, if you have him, you’ve got to hold now. He won the Golden Boot last season and, if he has any hope of wrestling it off Vardy or Abraham, he needs to deliver in the next two matches. If he can bang in some goals, my rank should be more respectable by the time I write my next article… unless “Lord Lundstram” strikes again, that is.

Happy IB all - any thoughts on what’s the better combo:

    A) Mount / Maddison
    B) Pulisic / Tielemans

Currently on mount / tiel and it’s a pickle working out which one to upgrade! Or keep...

    Vardy (C), Abraham,

    McGovern, Connolly, Rico, Tomori,

Unless anything significant happens during the international break, i´m gtg, right? Salah´s injury and Mount´s decline in form seems to be my only worry for the moment.

Yes, i´ve been quite lucky to have been early with transfers in, before significant price rises this year. Value up to 104,9 with 0,2 ib. With Dendoncker in your squad instead of Tielemans, i guess you play 4-4-2?
I feel that my defence gives my quite a lot of benching headache every week. Missed out on points from both Tomori and Soy last gameweek.

Yeah indeed. Many to choose from in defence.
4 4 2 is the idea, but last few gws I took a chance on 3 4 3 with connolly. Rather backfired.

I have the same team. Except I have Maddison and Sterling instead of your Salah and Tielemans.

I have burnt the last two FT’s in a row. And I’m set now to burn yet another FT.

I’m not too concerned about Mount. They have a great run of fixtures coming up, and he’s nailed.

Wow, your value must really be something else!

I´ve also burnt my last two FT´s, feels a bit weird to not be able to find any ideas how to upgrade your team. Guess that´s a good thing.

I agree on Mount, think the decrease in ownership only is positive for us who holds him.

Yeah, thats actually on thing that´s crossed my mind. Downgrade Tielemans or Mount and Tomori to afford Connolly to Jimenez, Just don´t think it´s worth a - 4 at the moment. Thanks for your input though!

1FT and 2.7m ITB. Assuming all are fit, how do I best spend the money?

    Pope Button
    TAA Soy Lundstram Tomori Montoya
    Salah KDB Madders Mount Hayden
    Vardy Abraham Jimenez

    A) Montoya -> Robertson (Double liverpool def, double benching of Soy and Tomori most weeks)
    B) KDB -> Mané (Double liverpool attack, no city)
    C) Mount -> Pulisic, leaving 1.9 ITB for something like Pope -> Alison or Soy -> Pereira/Chilwell
    D) Save, then Montoya + Mount -> Rico + Son

tricky one! would prefer Mane than the defensive double up given the value in other defenders this year and the benching headaches you'll have but also keen on holding KDB for a few more weeks. Maybe hold and reassess next week; no harm carrying 2FTs into the busy period

i think for next two there are some good options in midfield from other teams that also have good fixtures and Brighton/Everton, i think it´s after that, Wat/Villa/Nor, those 3 games one midfielder could be gold, so if you have or got an easy way to a mid from now i would go for it but if you have to make re-arrangements of your squad to get there i think one could wait. I have Son, vs West ham and Bou next, that´s not sell material. I might go for a cheeky Perez punt for those 3, and then it´s a easy swap to Grealish/Trossard after gw17, Maddison is more deep vs bad teams, i think perez could be worth a shot.

      1. Karan14
        • 8 Years
        4 years, 5 months ago

Perez is going to be dropped sooner or later. Always gets subbed off at 60-70 I wouldn't go anywhere near him.

Brighton, Watford, Villa, Norwich & Everton I can't see any of those teams parking the bus against Leicester which suits Maddison.

If the fixtures were Newcastle, Burnley, Sheffield, Wolves I would be worried about Maddison as those are the teams that park the bus and Maddison struggles against.

    3. PapaWengzz

You could always go Shield and get Vardy + Soy/Chilwell and look for differentials elsewhere like Son, Willian/Pulisic, Martial.

      1. PapaWengzz

All of those options have higher upside than Maddison IMO

          Interesting how Maddison's last 6 scores are 10, 7, 2, 8, 9, 9.

            • 4 Years
            4 years, 5 months ago

Willians numbers are pretty similar and he has less ownership, Pulisic is much more explosive, Martial is more of a punt, OOP and looks dangerous. And we all know what Son can do if he goes on a scoring streak + his fixtures are great.

Just saying, Leicester double up as a shield can be equally effective as a triple up, if not better.

      2. Karan14
        • 8 Years
        4 years, 5 months ago

But if you can create a sword with Leicester then it looks even better.

Son I don't think is worth 9.6m definitely. Already owned him this season. Rather just keep KDB.

Pulisic I'm defo getting in GW14 for Mount so the options left for me is Maddison vs Martial which is pretty close.

not sure why everyone gets rid of Mount, is it City or form? I think Mount is a kind of player that will score you points regularly, a cheaper Maddison if you will, and if anyone saw how City defended vs Liverpool (and in some other games as well) Chelsea could really hurt them even at Etihad

That bundle of quality from Jorginho/Kovacevic up to Abraham, they will pose some real question from a lack of tempo/defensive awareness that is City midfield. I watched that second goal from Liverpool, when i watched it first time i was sure that was a break, a counter attack because City looked so out of position but then i realized that it came from a play that started from Liverpools backline where City were in balance, had everyone behind the ball. For all the good they bring offensively, Dilva, KDB and Gundogan lacks speed and tempo and defensive awareness that leaves them very open and vulnerable. Wolves had Jimenez and Traore, Chelsea got Pulisic, Mount, Willian and Abraham. Even with Kanté in, and Kovacic further up they will bring them lots of trouble.

Hm, Pearce, former journalist in Liverpool echo already out and said it´s rubbish and that Klopp are happy as it is.

If you look at his qualities and position, he got pace, tempo and his work rate is very good. Quality on ball is good, but he is foremost a winger of trade, kind of similar to Shaqiri (better allround player than him though), and from a financial pov it makes sense, Shaq is prob on his way out, for more money than he was bought for, and fraser is younger and more suitable to Liverpools playing style.

I think if Liverpool want to add a player now, it has to be one that is closer to the 3 up front in terms of quality. Somewhat between Origi and those 3, and i think that is difficult to find. And Liverpool has a bundle of very promising youngsters and therefore they will add only players that will do some real upgrade.

    Pope-Button
    Robertson-TAA-Soyuncu-Lundstram-kelly
    Sterling-Mane-Yarmolenko-Mount-Cantwell
    Jimenez-Wilson-Vardy

    WOULD YOU DO....
    Sterling-Yarmolenko-Wilson to Maddison-Martial-Abraham for -4?

"if I had captained my highest-scoring player each week, I would be ranked at just over 1k."

    That's a pretty big if!

I suspect a few hundred thousand other managers could make the same statement.

Yeah, if everyone else got to tweak their scores in the same way where would he be ranked? Probably about the same as he is now.

ha i knew i'd get criticised for that line.

My point was just to show how important the captaincy is.

Essentially, we have 11 players each week and you can look at the captaincy as one extra. With just getting that one call right, it can mean the difference between 1,000,000 places.

      Just thought that was crazy!

Wasn't meant to be critical, just banter 🙂

I suspect I've made similarly poor captain choices. I've over relied on sterling too. Only time it worked was when he didn't play and KDB was my vice!

        exactly.
In a season where the usual suspects aren't really performing to normal levels captaincy has taken on a bigger relevance.
May be obvious but my best seasons are where captaincy success % is highest.
The point gap between my captains and vice captains (roles reversed) is 176 pts - thanks Raheem 🙂 So that's top 100 🙂
Currently ranked 700k my highest scoring player captained each week would see me over 100 pts clear at the top but there's only 1 GW where I would have considered that particular player.
When a season is tight like this where point gaps more important than current rank it's often about fine margins like the decision between captain and vice captain.

2.6 itb. Where would you upgrade for the next fixtures?

    --Pope
    --TAA--Lund--Rico--Soy
    --Mane--KDB--Maddison
    --Wilson--Vardy--Tammy.

    ---Stekel--Mount--Tomori--Cant.

    a) Rico to Robbo.
    b) Wilson to Ayew and Cant to Son.
    c) Somethind else.

    Thanks guys.

This GW is set to be one of the most split captaincy %. Mane, Vardy, Sterling and Salah (if fit) will be captained by plenty. Interesting to see if anyone will be top by a distance in the poll.

From my -extremely basic- interpretation of the defensive stats, the best option according to the numbers is Mane.

But I'm going with Sterling. I never learn.

    Pope - Button
TAA - Soyuncu - Lundstram - Rico (Lascelles)
Mane - KDB - Maddison - Mount (Cantwell)
    Vardy - Abraham (Connolly)
    0FT, 4.7 ITB

I transferred Sterling out this week to spread the funds around and make my team more balanced. I don't have great team value, so felt it was necessary. Cantwell is a problem, and with Lascelles out with a long-term injury, he is now as well. What I'm considering going forward:

    A) Cantwell->Martial (worth the -4 this week? Martial will rise in value and Cantwell will fall, again),Lascelles->Saiss/Guilbert/other? GW13
    B) Connolly to Jimenez (again, worth the -4 this week if Jimenez will be back by the end of the IB?), Cantwell to Hayden in GW13

With a potential bench of a combination of Rico/Saiss/Hayden/Connolly and around 2 million in the bank, I should have the flexibility to bounce back to Sterling if he picks up form in two transfers, which I like. Or would it be more prudent to gradually upgrade my bench in preparation for the holiday fixtures and Liverpool's blank gameweek? Thanks for the advice!

    His: Digne & Grealish
    for my: Lovren & Siggy

    Thoughts?

Just a philosophical thought. Context is everything!
If I said on here: “What do you think of this team, G2G?:

    0.5itb
    Pope
    TAA, Lunds, Soy, Willems
    Salah, Mané, KDB, Maddison
    Vardy, Abraham
    (McGovern) (Rico, Dendo, Greenwood)”

I’m guessing you’d say it was a good team and G2G?

If I said, I’m on a -4 already and considering: Jimi, Mount > (Greenwood), KDB you would tell me I’m insane!

    Context is key. Happy IB!
