Pro Pundits

How I’m planning to kickstart my faltering FPL season

In his latest Pro Pundits piece, Az bemoans anticlimactic captaincies, disappointing differentials – and his failure to acquire a certain Sheffield United “defender”.

“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.” – Matthew Syed, Black Box Thinking

Another fortnight passes, as does a rotten Gameweek and (finally!) a decent one.

Christmas is widely regarded as the season of joy – the antithesis of my own season of woe – but it does seem fitting time to reflect, once again, on my 2019/20 campaign so far.

Jamie Vardy (£9.6m), one of the main protagonists of my previous article and Fantasy Premier League top goalscorer at the time of writing, has finally come into my team and delivered me 30 points (one as captain) in two weeks.

Mason Mount (£6.8m), a player who I was rueing selling, has only managed one assist in three games (although of course, Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.8m) has managed just three substitute appearances in as many matches, and a booking!).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) has finally got me a goal and is still in place for the two best fixtures out there (Southampton and Norwich).

N’Golo Kanté (£5.0m) is back and Chelsea are already looking more solid, so I’m hoping for some more clean sheets from Fikayo Tomori (£4.8m).

Looking at my team, I believe I have reason for optimism going forward.

Of course, it hasn’t all been rosy. If I see one more mention of “Lord” John Lundstram (£4.9m), I may have to deactivate my account. It seems like myself and Andy are the only ones who don’t have the Sheffield United defender-turned-midfielder but I was put off at the start of the season due to his lack of minutes in 2018/19 and Sheffield United’s spending spree on supposedly “better” options.

On my Wildcard, the allure of a “strong” defence featuring Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m), Ricardo Pereira (£6.3m) and Nicolas Otamendi (£5.2m) – supplemented by the budget Diego Rico (£4.2m) and Tomori, who I thought was an absolute steal at £4.5m – meant there was no room at the inn for Lundstram.

I wasn’t even worried going into the Burnley game but of course, I had my head in my hands when they announced that Lundstram had scored. When I heard he had scored his second of the match, I just had to laugh. I’m still laughing now. Kind of.

I think the £4.0m defender, or a £4.5m midfielder in form, is a player who you just need to jump on at the earliest opportunity.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.4m) was one of my star players last season (although I often had to look at his points sat on my bench) and £4.5m midfielders like 2016/17-era Etienne Capoue (now £4.8m) are players you shouldn’t even be considering to put in your starting XI, but always end up coming in and do an amazing job for you. If they really go off the boil, most of the time you can sell them at a £0.4m/£0.5m profit but, for the most part, you just keep them in your team until the end of the season. They really are “set and forget”.

I should have prioritised Lundstram on the Wildcard. His ownership, position, and price rises made him too attractive an option to ignore. With a great run of fixtures coming up, a £4.0m defender who couldn’t even get a game in the Championship is now one of my most sought-after targets. It’s an amazing game we play.

I now sit at the lofty heights of a 1.2 million rank, having plunged to the depths of two million just a week ago. Having achieved a pretty tasty (and much coveted) 700k rank rise, I’m reminded of the importance of playing your own game.

The Fantasy Scout/Twitter template feels particularly strong this year. Players like Nick Pope (£4.7m), Lundstram, Mount, Sadio Mané (£12.1m), Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m), Vardy and Tammy Abraham (£8.0m) seem to be in every team that’s being bandied around. This can leave you thinking that you need some big differentials to climb the ranks.

Well actually, I’ve got most of these players, and my “differentials” in Hudson-Odoi, John McGinn (£5.8m) and Aubameyang have all failed to deliver. And yet, I was still able to get a healthy green arrow. Chasing shadows and binning perfectly good players to try and strike gold often does more harm than good.

It’s also reinforced the importance of getting that captaincy pick right. Obviously, it is unachievable for mere mortals like me, but the fact is that if I had captained my highest-scoring player each week, I would be ranked at just over 1k. That’s over a million places higher than where I am now. That, to me, is crazy.

The captaincy is something I’ve always struggled with – I can remember a handful of great captain picks over the years (Sergio Aguero‘s five goals vs Spurs, and an Alexis Sanchez hat-trick against West Ham) but actually, whenever I’ve rolled the dice (looking at you, Jesse Lingard) I’ve been burned.

This season however, it seems like you get burned when you play the logical game. Looking at my selections, it’s been an over-reliance on Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) that’s really hurt me. He’s been in great form for club and country – but this has not been turning into FPL points.

Well now I’ve seen through my plan which I had come up with weeks ago when I Wildcarded. Raheem is gone for the more reliable Mané. Can I see myself captaining anyone other than Vardy or Mané between now and Christmas? I doubt it.

City, much like my captain picks throughout my FPL career, seem too inconsistent to trust. I wonder if they are really focusing on the Champions League this year and, with Liverpool seemingly out of sight after just 13 Gameweeks, I wonder if there will be more disappointment for those that continue to back their assets with the armband.

In terms of my plans going forward, I’m putting more eggs in the Leicester basket. The Foxes don’t have the worry of Champions League rotation – and their performances and results have been nothing short of exceptional.

I’ve got to move out some of my deadwood. Hudson-Odoi has gone, and one of my favourite players in the league – a certain James Maddison (£7.5m) – is in. To fund this, I’ve had to downgrade Pereira, who has done okay for me, but is not living up to his £6.3m price tag. He leaves for the much more affordable Çağlar Söyüncü (£4.9m), who is looking like a steal at under £5.0m.

McGinn is next on the chopping block, and it’s likely that Aubameyang will be the man to fund an upgrade – after he has played against Southampton and Norwich. I’m hoping that he will deliver some solid returns in these games.

I wouldn’t be advising anyone to buy him but, if you have him, you’ve got to hold now. He won the Golden Boot last season and, if he has any hope of wrestling it off Vardy or Abraham, he needs to deliver in the next two matches. If he can bang in some goals, my rank should be more respectable by the time I write my next article… unless “Lord Lundstram” strikes again, that is.

      On balance probably C

      Depends on Salah's injury also.

Of the 3 options, B has the highest ceiling imo.

Same keepers and defence as me on my WC this week.

I'd do Sterling to Mane this GW.

I would get in Mané this GW - of the two LIV mids he is the more 'essential' while Salah is battling with injury

Something I talked about in my recent Meet the Manager video was mid-price midfielders, and why I’m quite aggressive with transfers in this category, whilst sometimes experimenting with a differential or two.

This season, it’s my most transferred position, with David Silva, Ayoze Pérez, Anthony Martial, Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Theo Walcott all making appearances in my squad.

Right now, there are a wealth of options including Dwight McNeil, who remains somewhat under the radar despite registering five assists, Christian Pulisic and James Maddison.

A quick look at the ticker also tells us the likes of Crystal Palace and Southampton have good fixtures on the horizon.

Are there any under the radar options here who could give us an edge?

Who do you currently own, and who is on your Watchlist?

On wildcard and currently have Maddison and Pulisic. Martial on the radar as well, but the other two have better fixtures.

I already own Tammy and Pulisic and am very tempted to get Willian before GW14 for an attacking triple up. Chelsea's fixtures between 14-19 are incredible, and many have tomori which restricts them from 3 attackers, thus making it a differential with huge potential upside.

Already a Pulisic owner, I think he's more explosive and plays closer to goal a bit like an inside forward, but Willian took his fare share of set pieces last GW and has been consistent. 7 ppg in the past 6, which makes him very tempting.

      Have Martial. Want Pulisic.

Keeping an eye on JWP, think Maddison is overrated (agree with Zophar's pundits article about why Maddison's positioning makes him flatter to deceive from a fantasy stand point).

I knew you'd come up with a good one Camzy, I've been looking at Saints too. I'm really not convinced by them, but that's not to say one of the mids won't do well. Ward-Prowse a better option than Redmond or Djenepo you think?

Maddison only flatters to decieve against teams who sit back but then again he has set piece duties to profit from in those kind of matches.

On the contrary, he's worse against teams that play open games. He ends up assisting the assister or worse - Barnes and Perez. He's better against the deep teams where he can shoot from range, has more space outside the area and set pieces.

But in the end, his history as a fantasy player is spotty and reliant on long range shooting. His xG is low because he doesn't make runs into the box the same way that Lampard or even freaking Lundstram does. He's certainly still a decent option at that price with those fixtures but compared to Martial who's playing up front or Pulisic who's far more direct and in the box shooting, he doesn't compare imo.

I agree about Maddison. Martial playing up front for United at that price if a gift. Lack of other decent options in that United team makes him even better pick.
Chelsea mids looking great if you can nail down the right one, Pulisic has the form right now that’s for sure

I currently own Mount as my only mid priced midfielder and I'm definitely not happy looking at the number of options available.

I'm looking to jump on Maddison & Pulisic given their prices and Cheslea's & Leicester's form & fixtures.

Would love to know who you think are the best options from this price bracket?

Congrats on that amazing rank history and one of my favourite MTM episodes. Hope we get to hear rom you more in the future.

        Thanks, appreciate that.

I really like McNeil, I think he'll continue racking up assists with Wood and Barnes in the box. Also think Richarlison could do well this week, but I suppose both of those are shorter term punts due to fixtures.

I wouldn't count Martial, Maddison or Pulisic as mid priced. I'd say 5.5 - 6.5 is that range.

I think most people will have a City and Liv premium mid plus 2 of Mount, Maddison, Martial, Pulisic and Tielemans.

It's hard to go for guys like McNeil, McGinn Redmond (horrible price for a player on a really bad team.) and Grealish when you have that core 4 mentioned above.

I like McGinn and Grealish Personally Good sub £6.0 value there and both nailed on.

I'd be tempted by Grealish if fixtures post Newcastle were better, but yeah I agree, it can be hard fitting guys like McNeil in when Pulisic, Maddison, Martial etc are picking up points.

On another note, I am finding it utilise a differential right now.

My team is pretty template as I got on a few of the flyers early (Vardy, Abraham etc) so I think my side will be differential-less until GW18. And then It is Jacky Grealish (C) all things well x

Currently own Pulisic, Martial, Maddison in a midfield 5. I really like that price point this year, and I believe those 3 are the best.

If Fraser and Zaha get favourable moves in January I can see those rediscovering their fine form and becoming options again.

I quite like the idea of a 3-5-2, but I always find myself wanting to play four defenders. Can't see that changing with Lundstram, Tomori, Soyuncu etc's fixtures.

I got rid of Mount ahead of GW8. He's since scored 7, 3, 5, 1, 3... so it's worked out okay so far. He's probably got a big score in him soon tho with those fixtures post City.

It’s just so hard to know what Mount will turn up. What is clear is how Pulisic’s purple patch has impacted Mount’s ability to create. Lampard clearly still rates Mount and is unlikely to rotate him imo but it’s such a valuable price point and slot in my team that makes me question holding.

I’d ask your advice on my team/ predicament (see below) but it’s unfortunately a fait accompli after my early mid-sleep horror transfers so I will just have to live with it and think about moves from GW14 onwards.

Hoping to regain calm planning mode going forward 😆

Hi mate loved your meet the manager.
Big under the radar option here at West Ham coming.
Our best player before injury and is exactly what we need right now. Due to come back after IB. Calls for a system change as Haller is desperate for a strike partner and Antonio is the perfect player for the job. Huge potential for him vs a load of boring picks.

        Cheers mate, appreciate that.

That's really, really interesting re Antonio. Having read quite a bit about Frankfurt last season, it does sound like Haller would be better suited to a system like you suggest. One to keep an eye on for sure.

Sure, some great differentials in this category. I’m planning Martial out for Milivojevic in week 15 and bring in Ward-Prowse instead of mount in week 14 also considering King >> Ings & Azpilicueta >> van Aanholt

This is a question I'm really struggling with.

I'm currently trying to make a choice between getting just one of these,

OR getting 2 AND Robertson on a WC at the expense of KDB.

It's a question of whether they are good enough to match KDB. So far they have been but there's also the Rodri factor...

Currently leaning towards Pulisic + Maddi/Martial but really stumped of I'm honest

Looking at the pool of cheap(ish) mids that are ticking various combinations of the important boxes at the minute - (form, fixtures, price, position) - it seems to have grown to be quite large all of a sudden:

Maddison, Martial, Mount, Pulisic, Tielemans, KDB, Dilva, Son, even HBarnes, etc

My differential is having 4 of those mids alongside one big hitter in a 3-5-2 rather than 2x big hitters and only two of the mids... I just can't bring myself to devote a midfield slot to more of a gamble/differential type player at the minute with that selection of candidates available 🙂

Yeah some do consider him that for sure! But at 9.5 purchase price I consider him more of a value pick, albeit a very high end value pick... my own subjective definition of 'big hitters' are the guys in the 11.0+ range (Mane, Salah, Aguero, Auba, Sterling, Kane etc) - but its subjective I agree

Yeah for sure, there are so, so many options in this category. Trossard, Richarlison, Grealish, Willian etc too. I like the idea of a 3-5-2, but I always find myself wanting to play four defenders at the mo.

I'm looking at Grealish for a 1 week punt, if he's confirmed fit for this GW. I'd be moving on Ceballos who's been rotting on my bench for the past 6/7 GWs. Got a front 7 of Sterling/KDB/Maddison/Mount + Vardy/Tammy/Jimenez so happy to bench young Jack until GW20 or so but I'd like him in for this week so the fixtures look a bit brighter.

Guy top of my mini league had him as captain when he got 13 points and raced ahead of everyone else. Didn't even touch his team the following week so had Grealish (C) away to City and still got away with a huge score from triple Leicester. I want in on the jam

I'm looking for a max 6.2M budget mid for cantwell replacement. He's my 5th mid, and I guess need upgrade as I have connolly as 3rd fwd.

In that price bucket, I'm thinking of McGinn/Grealish, Trossard, McNeil, Barnes, James, Yarmolenko, Neves/Moutinho/Traore as my options.

Fixturewise, I'm leaning towards Barnes or Traore. But I'm also quite impressed with Trossard, so I still haven't made the decision yet.

Perhaps not really under the radar and talked about before, but Trossard may become an option once the fixtures turn (from GW- then again, Brighton aren't as poor as last year and not many teams will sit back against them. They've only failed to score in 4 of their matches so far. Trossard is owned by only 0.4% of players and should be fully match fit now.

Exactly my problem. Initially i was keen on him from GW 16 onwards, but looking closely i only like him against BOU in the next 10 (!)

Maybe it's not a problem though 🙂 Because, coming back to your initial question, there are already too many players i can't imagine not having. Already have Abraham-Vardy-Jimenez upfront and Mane-Stirling-Maddison-Martial in midfield and i'll have to ditch one for GW 14, because unless Pulisic is really injured or is in any doubt, for me it's mental going without him from GW14. And the only one i could see myself without from a value point of view is Sterling (or maybe, maybe Martial). This would also help me to get Robertson (Trent is in next GW anyway), but then i would have to bench Soyuncu or Lundstram (so Soyuncu 🙂 ) for some unbelievable good fixtures (WAT avl NOR).

So even if i think Willian, McGinn, Tielemans, McNeil, Barnes (maybe even Traore) are good value picks, there is at least one player i like more and won't make my team 🙂

Although writing this interminable reply, i realise the more i think about Willian, the more i like him. Another headache!

          Abundance 🙂

I do like your Willian shout. His assist threat is boosted because he takes corners, and he's been close with his freekicks, slightly lower xG than Pulisic (and Pulisic looks very threatening) but Willian perhaps better all round.

Slightly worried about the rotation threat with CHO, Pulisic, and Willian. But at £7.1, a little cheaper than Pulisic, Willian could be a useful price. Ideally CHO get his place back!

I've taken it a bit further and punting on two mid priced mids, currently on Richarlison + James.
Richarlison punt worked out well last GW whilst my James punt was rather unlucky imo.
Saving FT (all going well) and these two can become Maddison/Pulisic + Trossard/Grealish in the future barring injury to other assets of course.
You came across well on the MTM vid and what a very impressive history, GL!

I have Mount now and other transfer headaches, but from GW 16 I would switch him to Grealish or Zaha. Wilf fixtures looks so promising and for a very long time, but his stats are very bad this year, he`s having so much penalty area touches and just don`t shot at all. Will monitor his game in 14 and 15 against Burnley and Bournemouth and decide then.

I am on WC and current paln is to to play 3-5-2 with the mid-line of:

      Mane - KDB - Martial - Pulisic - Maddison

Apart from Vardy & Tammy I can’t find any really tempting FWDs so opted for Mids Power 5 😉

Maddison is the one I am least convinced about, so he might become one of those cheaper punty alternatives (kean on McNeail or Grealish atm) and allows me to go more agresively at the back

Still long time to go with my WC 😉

Enjoyed your MTM video, nice one.

I want to double up on Salah/Mane and with so many great cheap defenders around, I think I'll be going 4-4-2 which only leaves two attacking positions up for grabs if I'm keeping Abraham-Vardy for the long-term which seems likely. It's crucial I get those two other midfield positions spot on... right now I have Maddison and Mount but I'm eyeing up Son, Pulisic and Martial going forward. Appreciate they're not mid-price but with cheap defence and only two up front, I have more cash to spend in midfield.

Also considering Djenepo, JWP, Ings, Moussett, Ayew for their fixture swing which would allow me to go 3-5-2 / 3-4-3 at times.

I'm currently rocking: Mane, KdB, Maddison, Mount & Martial.

My big decision next week is whether to play 2x LIV defenders or add Salah to the mix. I've got Robertson, Soyuncu, Lundstram & Rico and I could happily play 2 of the 3 cheapies every week.

After the LIV fixture I want PvA, Lunstram and Soyuncu have been returning almost every weekand have great fixtures too. So going forward I plan to move KdB to Salah & play 3/4 at the back every week. Then GW18 move Salah to Grealish for a 2/3 week punt.

They are indeed. I was all set for Robertson & TAA, but the form of Soyuncu, Lundstram and the fixture runs for their teams was too good to ignore. Plus my head is very much turned by PvA. his attacking potential and Palace's defence, combined with their fixture run means he could be an amazing differential. No City and an unusually off-colour Salah is a risk, however the rewards could be great.

I think the candidates at over 7m are great - martial etc

At 6.5 and below (that excludes tielemans), it's difficult to find quality, play-every-week mids

I took the punt with Perez myself which failed, I'm looking to shift him now for grealish with a view to rotate him with tomori for Chelseas away games . This way I can avoid the two poor fixtures after Newcastle .

Brighton like you said their fixtures even the blue ones are quite difficult - Leicester wolves and palace !

      As ever great post.

I've just bought Tielemans and Pulisic in.
For me Mount has recently become too likely to be the assister to the assist, a kind of lesser David Silva type, and Maddison has showed so much promise that I'm not sure it's possible for him to live up to the potential - perhaps I'm worried about FPL price too much.

I see Pulisic and Tilemans being likely to offer consistent attacking returns (if less frequent than Salah/Sterling etc) given their respective forward positions and attacking traits.

      We'll see 🙂

That's a good point, and I do agree to an extent, but that's not to say someone like Richarlison or Grealish won't outscore Maddison or Pulisic over a stretch of games, they don't have to be locked into your team for the season, you can play to fixtures, and that's what makes it interesting for me.

Great hot topic and great MTM m8.

I own Maddi and Mount for now, but after watching last 3 chelsea games i cant ignore Pulisic. He is in after City. The question is who i sacrifice to fund him Firmino or Pereira. This moment im leaning to ditch Firmino as I think the most valuable formation is 3-5-2 for now (as this hot topic there so much good options in mid).

The Lundstram points and the impact on rank was, I think, a good lesson in why ownership matters. You often get fairly obscure or unlikely players scoring big in a given gameweek and it doesn't really matter much if almost no-one has them. I picked O'Connell from SHU at the start of the season because he seemed more nailed-on to start and had got a few goals the previous year. He was 0.5 more than Lundstram, but seemed a safer bet. I'd not used my wildcard and it never quite seemed worth switching when he was getting the clean sheet points and even picked up an assist. Then Lord L gets 2 goals in a week and my rank and mini-league placings suffer because every other b***er has him. Moral: ownership may be a good enough reason to switch.

With the kind run of fixtures, form and pricing of their assets tripling up on these two teams seems like a no brainer.

They are facing some of worst defensive and attacking units over the next 5-6 weeks.

Personally I can't look past Vardy, Tammy, Maddison, Pulisic, Soyuncu & Tomori.

Agree. Whilst Maddison would not be my preferred choice on a standard run of games, I think he could be good value over this good run of fixtures. Loading on Leicester and Chelsea seems a sound strategy atm.

You have been talking some real SENSE today Cam. First i was going to comment on your write-up about Maddison, but I didn't bother, and now this is a great point. We cannot lose focus on the fact that Pool will probably romp to the title now. They are confident. Keep up the great work around here. Cheers.

    Morning!

I am currently sitting with this team going into GW13. Will just be praying that Salah is ok and CHE find a way of holding MCI back!

    0FT 1.3itb
    Pope
    TAA, Lunds, Soy
    Salah, Mané, Maddison, Mount
    Vardy (C), Jimi, Abraham
    (McGovern) (Willems, Rico, Dendo)

IF it seems that going without MCI was a big mistake, there is always Salah > Sterling or a potential plan to keep Salah/ Mané is to do:
Jimi, Mount > Greenwood, KDB and switch to a 4-4-2.

What do you think to my scary team for this week and potential plans?

    Cheers 🙂

It's clear getting the captaincy pick right is the most important aspect of getting a good score and a high rank, something the "experts" keep doing consistently year after year. So I don't want to know all the other fantastic tips the "experts" have to offer apart from "HOW DO YOU KEEP GETTING THE CAPTAIN RIGHT?" what is you secret, algorithm, magic potion. Please do tell. 😀

I think a lot of people have their eye on him, but given his late return from international fixtures and the long travel time / jet lag, he may be at risk of starting the next game. He's certainly on my radar, but Spurs have been kak and there are lots of other great midfield options.

    Salah - keep or sell?

My plan, for some weeks, has been to sell Salah and spread the cash around to improve my overall team. But after his great goal vs City I’m having second thoughts.

    Team right now:

    Pope (Heaton)
    Söyüncü, Lundstram, Rico (Boly, Lowton)
    Salah, Mane, KDB, McGinn (Cantwell)
    V,A,J

    1 FT

    I’m now considering either A:
Salah, McGinn, Boly -> Madison, Martial, TAA

    Or B:
Boly, Lowton, McGinn -> Tomori, Janmaat, Tielemans

Or C: Boly -> some back

Has anyone got a record of Son's minutes after International breaks? (or a link where I can view stats). I know he's quite low owned around here but I may be looking to offload. Plays in Brazil on 19th, PL away game lunchtime on 23rd. Thoughts on his minutes? Cheers

He's playing here in Lebanon as we speak. Trained in Abu Dhabi for the game.

      So lots of travels!
He's played the full first half so far.

I guess you'll have to check his minutes live. I own him too, but plan to keep him for a good 8 games.

      He WILL be the differential.

Cheers for the reply. I see that he's still on the pitch at nearly 90 mins. I wonder how much of the Brazil game he will play as it's a Friendly. 13hrs flight for a friendly haha.

I've made a note of Son's PL involvements in GW5 & GW9, after the last 2 international breaks:

        IB1: 62 mins (H Georgia), 90 mins (A Turkmenistan).
        GW5 (H) vs Crystal Palace 90mins, 2 goals

        IB2: 62 mins (H Sri Lanka), 90 mins (A North Korea).
        GW9 (H) vs Watford 45mins, 0 returns

        IB3: 90 mins (A Lebonon), ?? mins (A Brazil)
        GW10 (A) vs West Ham ???

    TAA Lundy Rico X X

    Which combo is better?

    A. Soyuncu Tomori and 1,3m in bank for rainy days
    B. Robertson Jaanmat and 0,0m in bank

Leaning towards B to avoid benching problems (Lundy vs Tomori vs Soyuncu) but not sure
