Suspensions

Which FPL players are nearing a suspension?

Those who keep an eye on our Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that the yellow cards are steadily racking up for several Premier League players – and indeed have already resulted in suspensions for a number of Fantasy assets.

The final international break of 2019 seems a good time to take stock of the disciplinary situation around the top flight.

The yellow card amnesty is not until after the completion of 19 Premier League fixtures (more on that later), after which the threshold moves up from five to ten yellow cards.

Those Fantasy Premier League assets already sitting on three and especially four cautions still have a long way to go before they are in the clear, then.

Currently Banned

Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) will miss Brighton and Hove Albion’s match against Leicester City in Gameweek 13 after collecting his fifth yellow card of 2019/20 in the defeat to Manchester United last weekend.

Christian Kabasele (£4.3m) will sit out Watford’s clash against Burnley next Saturday after being dismissed for two bookable offences in the victory over Norwich City, while Sean Longstaff (£5.0m) serves the final match of a three-game ban in Newcastle United’s Gameweek 13 encounter with Aston Villa.

Bernardo Silva (£7.9m) will also be unavailable for Manchester City next Saturday, after being handed a one-match ban by the Football Association in relation to a message he sent on social media.

All four of the players above will return in Gameweek 14.

Already Served a Suspension

Six players have already served a one-match ban for collecting five cautions in the Premier League.

Jorginho (£5.1m), Ashley Young (£5.4m) and Jefferson Lerma (£4.8m) are available for their clubs next weekend after serving one-match bans in Gameweek 12, while Luka Milivojevic (£6.7m), Jose Holebas (£4.7m) and Danny Rose (£5.4m) have also missed fixtures in recent weeks due to their accumulation of bookings.

Milivojevic has collected more cautions (six) and committed more fouls (27) than any other Premier League player in 2019/20.

A total of 18 players have been dismissed in the English top flight this season, although Son Heung-min‘s (£9.6m) red card in Gameweek 11 was subsequently overturned and he didn’t serve a suspension.

If any of the players above (excluding Son) are sent off for a second time in 2019/20, they will incur an additional one-game ban onto whatever the punishment is for their next dismissal.

On Four Yellow Cards

Nine players are currently one booking away from a one-match ban.

Perhaps the most noteworthy name on the list above, certainly from a Fantasy perspective, is Raheem Sterling (£12.0m).

The Manchester City winger has already accrued more yellow cards than he did in each of the last two campaigns and no player in Pep Guardiola’s squad has committed more fouls than Sterling (16) so far this season.

Of the other eight names above, Ruben Neves (£5.3m), Issa Diop (£4.5m) and Fabinho (£5.5m) are the only ones owned by more than 1% of FPL managers.

Fabinho was benched in Gameweek 11, with Jurgen Klopp not risking his Brazilian midfielder for fear of him collecting a fifth booking of the season and subsequently missing the visit of Manchester City.

On Three Yellow Cards

A total of 31 players are on three yellow cards.

Amongst this cluster of Fantasy assets are five players with double-digit ownership: John Lundstram (£4.9m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.4m), Ederson (£6.0m) and Daniel James (£6.2m).

Callum Wilson (£7.8m), Ashley Barnes (£6.3m), Moussa Sissoko (£4.9m) and Dale Stephens (£4.5m), all of whom sit on three bookings, are among the 13 Premier League players who have committed 20 or more fouls this season.

While we’re on that subject, Sadio Mane (£12.1m) is joint-third among FPL assets for most fouls committed (22) in 2019/20 – although his owners can rest easy as the Senegal international has collected only one booking along the way.

When Are the Cut-off Points for Suspensions?

As we mentioned in the introduction, the yellow card threshold is raised to ten after 19 league fixtures.

For most players, that will mean after the completion of Gameweek 19 on December 26/27.

For Liverpool and West Ham United assets, who blank in Gameweek 18, their cut-off point will be after Gameweek 20 is over on December 28/29.

Any unexpected postponements between now and Boxing Day would, of course, affect the above.

The cut-off point for ten yellow cards is after 32 league fixtures, which will be at the beginning of April at the earliest.

Players collecting ten bookings before that point will serve a two-game ban.

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

For those who believe in stats = Mane.
For those who don't believe in stats = Vardy.
For those looking for a shrewd differential = Sterling.

I have all 3 and am going for the last one.

Was sure I was going to but decided I want to see how City do vs Chelsea before ditching any assets, compare Mané vs Salah vs palace and umm keep Lucas Digne for his last good fixture vs Norwich.

Zagreb is the team which has all of Croatias top talent which hasnt left for bigger clubs yet. And we all know how good the Croatians are right now. Comfortably better than Norwich and Southampton.

If Sterling’s team mates scored some of the easy goals he has set up in recent weeks. Razz would be about tied with Mane in total points. He also got rested during the 8-0 of Watford

He is in a slump, so is the entire MCI squad

He is blanking but actually playing pretty good. Bad conversion

Chelsea is a pretty good offensive team

Chelsea would have been beat 6-1 by Ajax if the Ref not destroyed the game with synchronized Red Cards and a bad PK.

Then there is Chelsea’s horrible Goalie. That dude must have hands the size of a 9-year-old girl. He stops nothing.

Then there is the Championship level talent like Tomori and Zouma

Then there is old man Azpilicueta playing fullback against young studs. He should be a Centerback.

Goal Conversion was the problem for city in those games

Vs Norwich - 25 shots and 70% possession

Vs Sou - 26 shots and 76% possession

It was a shooting gallery with total domination of ball control. You forgot to mention Wolves. They lost 0-2 after twice the shots and 80% ball control

Worst mistake MCI made was letting Kompany leave and not replacing him. Otamendi and Stones make Louvren look like a competent defender

Stats could be deceiving though. City have scored 8, 5, 4 goals per game against the lesser opponents.

In the next few games City don't face any team that I think City would steamroll.

No harm in selling City assets for players with better form and fixtures and getting them back when City's fixtures turn.

    4. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years

It’s the old conundrum of what’s relevant for FPL points

City’s attacking output is the strongest in the league by far

But their attacking returns are also the most thinly spread amongst the most attackers in the league by far

For example to illustrate - Would you rather have an expensive player who gets 10% of the returns in a team scoring 30 goals - or a cheaper player getting 40% of the returns in a team scoring 10 goals?

Also look backward at he fixtures that generated the goals...

Now look forward at the list they have to navigate...

Is there a difference in the general quality of the opposition, and frequency of the games?

There’s no doubt their attack is phenomenal, but in translating that into FPL points for specific players I’d err on the side of caution with the original conclusion above 🙂

    5. PapaWengzz
      • 4 Years
      4 years, 4 months ago

Agreed with most of the of the points above, however, its turning into possibly the most powerful differential in the game and I'll take my chances with Sterling + Kdb living up to their potential. Could be season defining....or breaking 😉

      1. PapaWengzz
        • 4 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

        FPL points potential that is*

Possibly just variance, we might have seen out the low and could be in for the high. They didnt do it against the easier opposition, but might go on to do it in the tougher fixtures. It would be consistent with their unpredictability this season.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          4 years, 4 months ago

Indeed anything is possible, and almost nothing surprises in FPL...

But the all time record for goals scored in a premier league season was 106 (guess which team 🙂 )

And City currently have 35 from 12 games - which, were they to continue at that rate, would see them break that record and score 111 goals - a phenomenon that is at least consistent with the extremely favourable opening 11 fixtures they enjoyed

So to expect them to maintain their current scoring rate looks like it is perhaps a stretch given so many seasons of precedent of elite teams trying to achieve similar, a record breaking stretch in fact, but it’s obviously not impossible, especially not for Man City

The problem from an FPL perspective is that even were they to successfully achieve that record breaking stretch and maintain their current goals output for the rest of the season, FPL managers may still have difficulty in that those attacking returns are still spread across such a broad range of attackers - more than any other side in the league

So for sure, anything is possible, City have some of the most dangerous players ever to be seen in the game, and almost nothing surprises in FPL anymore, but I would just err on the side of caution with the (FPL) conclusions we draw from that simply phenomenal Man City goalscoring output, especially in a short term horizon that sees an increase in frequency of games, and an increase in quality of opposition, relative to the opening 10-ish games they enjoyed

Change of plan for this coming GW.
Was going to do either Cresswell to TAA of KDB to Salah.
Now doing for one week only, Cantwell to Richarlison(C).

    Guita, 4.0
    Soy, TAA, Lord, Guilbert, Rico
    Salah, Mane, Mount, Maddison, Grealish
    Jiminez, Vardy, Tammy

Guita, Salah, Grealish are the transfers in coming weeks if things go planned

Dont think he will be risked IMO. Klopp said his injury needs a sustained period of rest to heal, will probably play in pools next home game and rested for the trip to London.

Maddison has travelled with the squad to Kosovo and will face a late fitness test for that game. This suggests that it isn't serious and he should play at the weekend.

Liverpool havent hit top gear in attack yet. They next few easier games could see them get there and have a couple of 5 or 6 goal victories which would possibly end your season from a top 50K point of view. Get Mane + TAA as shields and look for differentials elsewhere IMO.

I have TAA, but Robbo is great too. Set pieces edge it for me, and robbos niggling Injury as well, that's why I would go TAA. He also has the highest xA in the league, or 2nd highest after KDB not sure.

If you are going for TAA and Robertson then I think you have enough money for Son as well if you are looking for someone more differential. I think you could replace Traore if you replaced Sais for Tomori to be replaced, tho I couldn't be bothered to calculate exactly. You'd have a bench headache tho!

                KDB Sterling Mane Salah

                Martial Maddi Son Puliisic

13 mil price difference. Is there 13 mil worth of points?

The trouble is they’ll both do well and I doubt many will be able to fit both in their squads, assuming most own Vardy and Soy too.
I think you just have to pick one and accept that the other may outscore you one week and hope it’s your turn the next...

I think it's irrelevant the number of yellow cards your player is and we should not base our transfer policy based on that.

I have seen so many times, players playing with 4 yellows for ages (Diego Costa i.e.), getting the yellow conveniently in order to miss a cup game, having a benching dilemma the same week our player misses an fpl game, being a great excuse to transfer the player when he gets the suspension if needed etc.

Bottom line so many factors are involved there is no point of thinking about it until the actual suspension happens.

    Agree? Disagree? Comments?

    Thanks,
