Community Tournament Pundits Playoff heads for period 2

The transfer window for the Pundits Playoff Community Tournament is now complete and the teams are set for the second period of the competition. Before they are announced, we will kick off this article with an interview with the winner of the Best Manager title for Period 1 : Pirlo’s Pen of team Unbelievable Jeff FC.

Despite his team finishing third in the H2H league, the stats tell you the reason why Pirlo’s Pen was the undisputed winner of this coveted award. 20 bonus points won out of a possible 24 from the H2H battles, and a cumulative H2H battle score of 766 over the first four matchweeks proves his selection process for these battles was second to none. Currently sitting in first of the Classic league, Unbelievable Jeff FC’s highest cumulative team score is 110 points ahead of their nearest rival. I caught up with their leader to discuss his team’s achievements so far:

Boris Bodega: So how does it feel to be the Best Pundits Playoff Manager for period 1?

Pirlo’s Pen: If I am totally honest it feels slightly bitter sweet. Obviously I am delighted to be the best manager of the period, but what I really want is to be the top ranked team. We suffered two very narrow defeats which were very difficult to take. However, all the right signs are there for us to be in the fight till the end of the competition, which is great cause for optimism.

BB: You masterminded an astonishing feat to win 20 out of 24 H2H bonus points so far, which pushed your team, Unbelievable Jeff FC, up into third place just above “15” Musketeers, despite them winning one more game than you. Care to share your H2H selection process?

PP: The key is quite simple, we track all of our teams in a massive spreadsheet and I predict how I think they will do. It’s really that simple. When I’m not 100% sure and its a 50/50 call I will consult my team, a lot of them are very competent fantasy managers themselves with brilliant insight.

BB: Out of all the other teams in the Pundits Playoff, which one would you most like to beat, and why?

PP: Even though it shouldn’t be difficult, I’d quite like to beat ‘A Whole Lawro B*llocks’, they bigged themselves up massively before the tournament and have performed as I had expected… average.

BB: Let’s discuss your own FPL team, you wildcarded in GW3 and currently have an OR just outside the 60K mark. What do you feel you’ve gotten right and wrong so far this season?

PP: Overall, I am pretty happy with how my FPL season is going, at 62k with all my chips left intact I should be in good stead for a top 10k finish. The early wildcard did me wonders, I was able to jump on key assets early on which has helped build my team value up to 105m. However, like most this season, I haven’t been hitting the captain successfully enough. Too much faith in Raheem Sterling has been particularly costly for me. I can’t see myself captaining him for at least the next 7 gameweeks, I am planning to show more faith towards the in-form Mane & Vardy. So my move with 2 free transfers will be to distribute that 12m to upgrade elsewhere in my team, the 3 players I’m looking to bring in are Robertson, Martial & Pulisic.

BB: Finally, this is your 4th season managing a team in a FFS community tournament. What is it about these tournaments you like so much, and do they help or hinder the success of your own FPL team?

PP: There is a lot I love about these tournaments, I love the analytical side of team selection, tracking live scores on match days and most importantly the bonds you create with your teammates! I have been with 4 of my teammates for 4 years now, managing them in every tournament so far, they are a massive help. However, the best part of managing a team is that when you do achieve success it can’t be attributed to an individual, it’s a real team effort and I take great satisfaction in that. In regards to how it affects my personal FPL team, I think it ultimately helps it, running my transfer decisions and ideas against top managers is never going to be a bad thing. I even managed to tempt 3 of my teammates to buy Janmaat for his 7 pointer!

Many thanks to Pirlo’s Pen for his insights, shots fired at Lawro and co ahead of their upcoming clash in MW5…I’ll have my popcorn ready to watch how that turns out.

It was a nervous International Break and transfer window for the BRIO squad. Recent poor form meant there were no call-ups from international managers, with even the Republic of Ireland giving us a wide berth. And plummeting transfer values dashed Geevious’ hopes of turning a quick profit from a squad fire-sale; however, his cunning plan of benching Tinkerman (last seen popping out for a walk with Major Tom) to protect his selling value did add a cool £75M to the transfer pot.

This, combined with the proceeds from the raffle; club fines; and a tabloid exposé involving Lord; Pizza and a Prince in Tramps, provided just enough funds to plug the skills gap with the mighty Lateriser12. Fortunately, he didn’t read the small print, so we now control his image rights and also get a share of his kickbacks from FPL Towers. Overthinker is busy organising extra training, which will focus on learning our secret handshakes and where we sneak out for a ciggie; but we’ve already got him earmarked for extra H2H duties.

The International Break was equally traumatic for our GW13 opponents, BSC Small Boys, with players jumping ship, and the star player and media supremo being deleted due to a malfunction with Boris’ fax machine. Rumours of dissent in their playing philosophy are surely wide of the mark: they are well known for their Youth policy, and emphasis on scouting, but there’s been a lot of interference in the Boardroom of late. The Training staff were also spotted fiddling with their wildcards, which can’t have helped. I’m sure it will come good in the end.

For some reason FPL has designated that this game needs to be played after the 9.00pm watershed, and highlights will be shown on the Fantasy Channel. Rio said this was all perfectly normal but that we should tell the Ref is anybody asks us if we’d like to see some puppies.

It’s good to be back. Isn’t it?

I think Kadhai paneer should have been the manager of period 1.
Great performance by pirlos team no doubt in period 1 but we (keane 15) are top of the table that matters without losing a single game. Wonder what more needs to be done for our manager to get some recognition around these parts. Not even a mention of his name in the article. (In fact one of the organisers asked Kadhai paneer to temper the celebrations as the tournament is a marathon not sprint

It was close one, but criteria we've decided to use are:
rank of highest points from H2H battles
rank of lowest points left on the bench (subs)
      rank of team value
      H2H league rank
      Classic league rank

Pirlo's Pen ranked number 1 in three of those criteria, and pretty high up on the other two as well. That said, Kadhai Paneer was a close second, and a big well done to you all as a team, unbeaten in the first period is some achievement.

Jose Mourinho’s endorsement of Spurs’ nightwear products caused a marketing sensation as fans recognised the importance of dressing appropriately to catch up on sleep during turgid afternoons at White Hart Lane. Steven Gerrard seized the opportunity to relive old memories by relaunching his range of Adidas Classic Dome Framed Slippers – guaranteed to bring you down to earth during a tight title race; and Boris Bodega was soon on the case too; arranging a catwalk event for Community Pundit Teams to show off their wares.

Market leaders, Unbelievable Jeff, were first on the catwalk, and while their Calvin Klein couture was somewhat predictable, their boxers did come with an App that broadcasts Chris Kamara singing ‘Let it go’ every time you take a dump. Next out was WhenTheOwengetTough, who sported a Rab C Nesbitt string vest look; meanwhile their groundsman was wondering what had happened to his nets. Nirvana’s Got Talent raised the tone with their Gigi Gallon Lace Cami and Shorts set (the only rise they’ve had so far this season); and 15 Musketeers followed in hot pursuit, decked in their Pink Unicorn All For Onesies. It was just as well that Back to Square Owen were wearing Blinkers.

Part two took a more bizarre turn, with Whole Lawro B*llocks going for a hirsute ‘Emperor’s new clothes’ look that had critics reaching for the sick bucket; and Slaven Balls-Itch’s interesting use of Emery Cloth didn’t leave enough to the imagination. After that, Brazil Nuts’ presentation of the merits of biodegradable thongs, closely pursued by BSC Small Boys in Romper Suits, was light relief. However, the evening came to an abrupt end when The Keane Fifteen and Holly’s Hamsters both insisted on going Commando. The resulting stand-off soon erupted into mass ferreting and the RSPCA had to be called in to clear up the mess.

Sadly, the BIOR squad didn’t get to do their pitch, but they did get to the pub in time for a Nightcap.

Nirvana Scott Talent v Brazil Nuts

After autosubs, cancelling outs etc, I make the current situation:

NST: 21 points + Lundstram, Martial x 5; McGinn, Willems
Nuts: Maguire, Rashford; Heaton x 2, Grealish, Wesley.

H2Hs looks like they are going to be split 3-3.

Far from over yet - Wesley hatty (or a double with a Villa CS), or a Heaton penalty save or something like that would make it interesting.

        Keane Fifteen v 15 Musketeers

        Current situation:
        15 Musketeers: 50 points + 2 x Martial
        TKF: Heaton + Targett + Guilbert x 2 + Mousset

        H2Hs 3-3.

Villa Clean sheet is required for a fight, else TKF will taste their first defeat of the season.

        WhenTheOWENgetsTough vs Hollys Hamsters

        Current situation
        WTOGT: 2 x Lundy, 2 x McGinn and Mousset
The Hamsters: 68 points + 2 x Mings, Heaton, Baldock and Greenwood (or 2 points if he stays benched)

H2Hs are done and dusted, Hamsters set for 4 points, unless McGinn scores 30+ points, WTOGT set for 2.

Good game chaps, but the Hamsters are on a roll!!!!
