Who are the best FPL captain candidates for Gameweek 13?

With the final international break of 2019 out of the way, Fantasy Premier League managers must once again make big decisions.

The most important one ahead of Gameweek 13 is, naturally, the captaincy.

In a season characterised by difficult debates for the armband, the latest one has followed suit.

As per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to help you out by analysing the form of the candidates and the defensive capabilities of their upcoming opponents.

Captain Poll

Captain poll results as of Thursday lunch-time

For the second Gameweek in a row, Jamie Vardy (£9.6m) sits at the top of the captain poll results.

That should be no surprise to Fantasy managers, considering that Leicester’s number one centre-forward is in the form of his life.

Over the last four Gameweeks, Vardy has found the net six times and has not blanked since the Gameweek 8 trip to Liverpool.

He is fast becoming a very reliable option for the captaincy as his ownership (36%) continues to rise. 32.9% of our voters have backed him for the Gameweek 13 captaincy too.

This weekend pits him against a Brighton defence that has kept two clean sheets in their last four at the Amex Stadium, although captain Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) will be missing through suspension.

Adam Webster (£4.4m) is also touch and go to start for the Seagulls.

It looks as if the 14.7% who have voted for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) this weekend are relying on the fixture rather than the player.

Southampton’s 9-0 to defeat at home to Leicester in Gameweek 10 has very much cemented their place amongst the ‘captain against’ category.

However, Aubameyang himself has registered just one attacking return in his last five Premier League matches, scoring against Wolves in Gameweek 11.

Furthermore, Southampton have tended to struggle more in front of their own fans than any way from home recently.

They held Manchester City to just two goals in Gameweek 11 and even managed to earn a 1-1 draw at Wolves in Gameweek 9.

So it will be interesting to see whether they can prove to be frustrating on the road once again when they travel to Arsenal on Saturday afternoon.

Not far behind Aubameyang in the captain poll standings is Sadio Mané (£12.1m), who has the backing of 12.9% as of Thursday lunch-time.

The Liverpool man remains the top-scoring midfielder heading into Gameweek 13 after finding the net late-on against Manchester City last time out.

No Liverpool player has more attacking returns away from home than Mané this season (four) which arguably makes him the most likely to secure a breakthrough against Crystal Palace.

Furthermore, as things stand, he is much more likely to start at Selhurst Park than Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) who comes into Gameweek 13 as an injury doubt and backed by just 2.6% for the captaincy.

Despite a swathe of sales over the international break, a portion of Fantasy managers are keeping faith in Raheem Sterling (£12.0m).

He may have just one attacking return in his last four league starts at home but Chelsea come to the Etihad Stadium still without a clean sheet away from home this season.

That is enough to convince 10.3% of our voters to back Sterling for the captaincy in Gameweek 13.

Heading up what Joe and David would describe as ‘barrel scrapers’, is Harry Kane (£10.8m) who prepares to face West Ham on Saturday lunch-time.

Just 4.5% of you have decided he is the best captain this weekend but interest in his services has certainly increased somewhat with the arrival of Jose Mourinho at Spurs.

Kane does only have one attacking return in the last five Premier League matches but West Ham’s defensive form has been particularly poor of late.

Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m), Son Heung-min (£9.6m), Richarlison (£7.9m), Raúl Jiménez (£7.3m), Sergio Aguero (£12.0m), Sébastien Haller (£7.2m), Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) are the only other options selected by more than 1% of voters.

If already on a -4 and have Salah, Mané and no MCI, best just to keep right? Salah out can’t be worth a hit

Yes keep. I went KDB --> Mane before Mane increases in price this transfer window because I want both for the rest of the season. One week out doesn't bother me but I reckon he may be subbed on for some game time ahead of ECL.

What do you think is the best strategy to overcome 70 points lead of Rival where both have similar teams?

    Get in more differentials?

Go maverick in captain choices ?

Or just play sensibly and wait for chips to come into play where careful planning allows you to get an added advantage?

(ps: he's never finished below 1m rank in past 3 seasons but having a blinder this season currently ranked 1.7k)

Best would involve sabotaging his team.

Or just do sensible things and expect sensible result. A sensible decision to go maverick for an example. Or a sensible captain choice.

Ignore him and play the best you can.

That means picking up essential players, taking calculated risks on some differentials with strong fixtures and playing it safe with captaincy.

70 points is nothing really. Lots of time yet.

Calculated punts and captaincy shouts as well as just playing smart/not panicking, there's a good chance they could miss deadlines and stuff over the festive period. I had a nightmare start to this season and have already got back within 30 of my cash ML leader after being way behind. There's a long way to go.

Hey you lot 🙂 bit concerned about Nuno's comments re Jimenez (see Scouts twitter feed). To get another differential this week, would you do Mount to Son (FT)?

Had originally planned to roll 1FT 3.5m ITB, and likely do Kelly to Robbo but Son perhaps an enticing option to replace Mount (who I bought at 6.1 - is he still good value, or move on?)? Early game against a poor WHU team, trying to impress Mou?

Or would you still just roll the FT? Much appreciated!

    Pope // McGovern
TAA - Soyuncu - Lundstram // Rico Kelly
    Mane - KDB - Maddison - Mount // Dendoncker
    Vardy(c) - Abraham - Jimenez

I want to see how Jose use Son. He's not dissimilar to Martial and feel like he might be the one to suffer under Jose, can see him preferring Lamela's work rate. I did Mount to Martial before the international break and happy with it but you might want to roll with this team.

Son work rate isn't that bad. In fact, would rate him better than Lamela. He's direct, covered a lot of distance iirc compared to his teammates. Underrated player in PL.

Lamela posts better defensive stats, tackles interceptions recoveries etc. I'd say Son's the overall better player, but I also think Martial is very good and Jose didn't rate him that much.

I looked at Son too and can see the appeal this week - especially against West Ham. Not convinced Mount is worth ditching yet - and a move to Pulisic may be more beneficial rather than the pricier Son.

There's a long list of exciting wingers who became more defensive workhorses under Mourinho so maybe worth waiting and seeing.

Personally, think Jimenez will play - but if he doesn't, Rico off the bench (against a Jimenez-less Wolves) isn't too bad.

I'd save and have 2FT's and lots of options to play with next week

What differentials are you eyeing up currently?

Grealish is up there for me when he's back fit. Son too has pretty low ownershp still.

Fair. I kinda always tend to gravitate more towards Son as when Spurs get going they often score similar but Son is cheaper?

What's your team looking like nowadays?

Yeah, just worried about Son game time this week..still mulling over him/Kane/Bobby F

          Heaton
          TAA Soy Lundy
          'Sterling Mane KdB Mount
          Vardy Tammy Maupay

          2 Ft's

          Maupay has to go

Happy with the midfield this week?
I have the same but with 1.3 cash and 2 FTs burning a hole I'm tempted by Mount -> Maddison

            1. Christina.

              Im thinking Sterling/Maupay->Maddi/Kane for free

              Would love Son.

Nice moves. Could nearly stick (C) on Kane as well.

Son is v tempting, I'm thinking Maddison in for Mount now and then Raz->Son and use the cash to get Robertson for free next week.

Looking good. Agree re Maupay - was that a short term punt for Norwich? Handy having 2FT though - how much ITB?

Our teams are similar ish, my Jimenez Maddison Pope 1FT and probably more (3.5m) ITB to your Maupay Sterling Heaton, so fingers crossed for us.

            Keeping faith in Sterling still?

Yeah, Norwich punt gone bad. I only have 0.5m so money tight. Wish I could get Son & Bobby F but to expensive.

I’ve had Bobby for 5 or 6 weeks now and he hasn’t delivered anything. Think he’s been unlucky - plenty of chances and a goal ruled out by a marginal VAR decision) - and his xG suggests that he’s underperforming. But not massively.

Think I’m shipping him out for Kane this week. Kane higher ceiling, on pens, new manager bounce. Historically does very well over xmas (though so does Firmino).

Obviously Firmino will go on a run as soon as he leaves my team lol.

May be smart on Son I suppose. One of those players that once he starts going he goes for a stretch, so maybe worth missing the first game/haul to make sure Spurs play well under Mou? That your thinking behind saying 'wait on son'?

I am going for Maddison. On set pieces and less likely to be rotated as they don't really have the depth plus no CL etc.
