Pro Pundits

Why the stats are becoming hard to ignore in the Pulisic v Mount debate

Let’s Talk FPL’s Andy looks ahead to Gameweek 15 in his latest Pro Pundits piece

I don’t like making late changes to my team – at that point, it all feels a bit rushed. Despite this I still found myself on Saturday morning chopping and changing between Jamie Vardy (£9.9m) and Sadio Mané (£12.2m) for captaincy, only to pick the wrong one.

It turned out to be a fairly average week, scoring 51 and seeing a 4,321 red arrow, down to 510,594.

Looking ahead to Gameweek 15 and I’m in that weird situation where I could transfer out one of three players or just make no transfer at all.

Nick Pope (£4.7m) has a bit of a fixture swing from this Gameweek, and not in a good way. Looking at the Season Ticker in the Members Area right up until Gameweek 30 (which is when I’ll start looking at using the second Wildcard), Burnley are second bottom in terms of fixture difficulty for defence.

I’m still reluctant to use a transfer on a goalkeeper however. The ceiling for points is fairly low and at just £4.7m he’s scored 55 points total, only five points behind current leaders Mathew Ryan (£4.8m) and Kasper Schmeichel (£5.3m). With the fixtures getting more difficult I would hope for an increase in save points to combat the likelihood of less clean sheets as well.

Mason Mount (£6.6m) is another player I’m looking at giving the boot to. He has just one assist to his name in the last six Gameweeks. There is a part of me that wants to give him the Aston Villa game, but that would definitely be the last-chance saloon.

If you compare Mount to Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) over the last six Gameweeks, there really is no competition: Pulisic has created more chances, registered more big chances and recorded more shots inside the box over the same period.

Despite all of this, it’s John Lundstram (£5.0m) that I’m looking to bring in (yes that’s correct, I still don’t own him).

It will be Harry Maguire (£5.3m) leaving my team to accommodate Lundstram. I have thought about keeping him, given that he’s nailed and has good goal threat, and instead transfer out Issa Diop (£4.5m), but that leaves a lot of money spread out over my defence, and would mean I don’t have enough flexibility for future transfers.

It’s been difficult to ignore Lundstram, and that is made even worse by their upcoming fixture run that includes Newcastle United, Norwich, Aston Villa, Brighton and Watford. Couple that with his 45.5% ownership and it’s hard to go any longer without him given the potential for clean sheets and attacking returns: he’s 12th for expected goals (xG) from open play in the last six Gameweeks for example.

As much as the fixtures look good for my team this week, I want to be more aggressive with my transfers in an attempt to get ahead of the curve. Lundstram doesn’t do that but he does provide a comfort blanket. That being said, after writing this article and looking at the stats for Pulisic, it’s difficult to ignore him with Villa up next. Maybe I’ll take my fourth hit in as many Gameweeks and just get it over with…

As for captaincy, that’s easy. I can’t look past Vardy at the moment and even though I bought Mané in under the guise of handing him the armband between Gameweeks 14-17, I think it’ll be the Englishman who becomes permanent captain now, at least for the next three weeks.

I can't believe so many people are thinking of selling Pope. Such a waste of a transfer when the potential upside is so low.

Why would I not do Pope > Henderson when I have nothing else pressing though?

        Pope
        VVD, Tomori, Soyoncu, Lund
        Mane, KDB, Alli
        Auba, Vardy, Mousset

        Button, Cantwell, Lindelof, Saka

I'd say you have Auba as quite pressing and Lindelof. Wouldn't want either any more. No Pulisic, no Son, no TAA.

Auba home to BHA, no thanks, I'll stick.
Lindelof can be benched this week.
Alli will outscore Son under Mour.
            Don't want Pulisic.
TAA granted, I'll give you that. How do you get him in without hits though? Means losing Auba for Ings which I don't want to do right noq

Fine, I guess you hold Auba this week but I'd save the transfer then so you can use the funds from selling him immediately without taking a hit.

I have no issues taking a -4 for improvements but do I really want to bring in TAA next week where he'd only play two games before blanking and then play Leicester away? Not particularly. But isn't that the beauty of this game? 🙂

Fair enough, but you will have funds left if you sell Auba which you can use to upgrade in midfield.

Might even go back to Tammy if he's back, then I'd get him at the price I sold him for. Roll the money over to the week after.

Bottomed; Everyone keeps talking about Guita instead of Hendo because of the save points. To clarify are you thinking that Guita is going to get save points AND clean sheets (with bonus potential) whereas Hendo will only get clean sheets or are you just thinking Guita save points will out score Hendo potentially getting clean sheets?

I've been tempted by Martin, guaranteed 4M starting 'keeper who could get your save points if that's all you're looking for? Granted WHU don't have the best fixtures but at least he'll have plenty of save points and if you ran Martin/Button that's even more money for your outfield players?

I've voiced my dislike of Guaita a lot, but I'll keep voicing it.

5.0m Crystal Palace goalkeeper. Repeat that.

I don't care that he has good fixtures, a 5.0m Palace goalie cannot be the best choice. Get Gazzaniga or Henderson. If you want a strong option, go Schmeichel for just 0.3m more.

No one was talking about Guaita save points. They were just talking Guaita as the best keeper option, which I just straight up disagree with.

I was reading comments about how Hendo doesn't get save points (I'd say that's more reassuring - less likely to concede if people aren't shooting at him) whereas Guita is up for save points

Who cares about save points when you playing the most defensively well organized side in the PL right now? The reason Henderson does not get as many save points as others is because his team defends a lot better! And may I remind that clean sheet points = 12 saves

As in, give Mour a chance to fix their backline (considering he has a rep for running a tight ship - sometimes parking the bus - therefore conceding less)

      3. dezille
        • 6 Years
        4 years, 3 months ago

Because people are fickle and look too much at the short term haha. If Lloris wasn't coming back, I'd much rather a 4.5 GK at Spurs than any other option.

As for Pope vs Henderson - they've scored the same amount of points (okay 1pt more for Pope) over 14 gameweeks, and Burnley's fixtures have been significantly more difficult. Now for the next 16GWs, Henderson's are much easier so would expect a 5-15pt difference in points.

I do agree that Pope tends to get more bonus but save points are more or less the same.

Some stats for those that are wavering, based on FDR totals set at the start of the season (not sure how much these change as the season goes on though).

      FDR totals GW1-14:
      Burnley: 38
      Sheff Utd: 46

      Pope's points: 55
      Henderson's points: 54 (1 less game)

      FDR totals GW14-30
      Burnley: 54
      Sheff Utd: 44

Basically, yes I'm saying double up on Liverpool defence and front line of Vardy, Ings & Mousset. Jimi is another great pick but I just feel the Ings/Mousset combination allows you to spend the additional funds elsewhere.

Just be careful though, you'd have three Liverpool players with them blanking in GW18

Watching the Leicester game last night and I was concerned about Tielemand involvement. His deeper wider roll meant he was way less involved then Maddison.

I'm not saying he played poorly but I got the feeling he will be the man to assist the assister which is reflected in him being involved in only one of Leicesters 8 goals.

Bearing this in mind would you consider Tielemans > Zaha?

Guys im going to name a great differential from gw18-21

And thats Jack Grealish (5.9) Here me out

    - Great Fixtures gw18-21 (SOT NOR wat bur)

The first 3 teams are currently in the relegation zone and all 3 have conceded most amount of goals in pl so far (1.SOT 2.NOR 3.WAT in that order)

    - Form. Grealish has 3 goals and 2 assists in last 5 pl starts, playing more advanced and nailed.

    - Villa are good attacking team as well. In fact currently only top 5 have scored more goals than villa (21)

He Tick All the Boxes. Are you Sold? Thoughts are welcomed

Got him last week for Newcastle. By the time GW18 rolls around, he won't be a differential any more.

Not sure many will bring him now considering next 3 fixtures(che LEI shu)

Saying that its better to get on the train as soon as possible

I actually got him in because of the fixtures. He's my 5th mid in a 3-4-3 and I need to bench someone, but needed someone to play ahead of Mount for GW13. I think a lot of people are waiting for the 'optimal' time in terms of fixtures but the game doesn't usually work like that unfortunately

Good cover for gw18. I might hop in later for 5th mid.

I think most are sold or at least have him on their radar, Tom Freeman had a HT on him a few weeks back highlighting the changes that made him more appealing than McGinn going forward. The next three fixtures are just very unfortunate

ITielemens next 3 = WAT avl NOR

After that he faces liv mci. Just in time for Grealish turn of fixture. Straight swap is on the cards 😉

Tbh, if i had a FT I'd get him in & get done with it.

But getting Aurier for Lascells is more important next GW for me. Grealish can come after GW 16 deadline

So I used the wildcard last gw - and for once I actually got more points than I would have had without using the wildcard. But a little annoying to see Martins 10 points on the bench - anything indicating playing Martin instead of Henderson this gw? (this way I will avoid the double Sheffield defense)

    Henderson
    TAA, Lundstram, Aurier
    Salah, Son, KDB, Pulisic, Maddison
    Vardy, Ings

    Martin, Tomori, Williams, Greenwood

I don't see why you'd want to avoid it with that fixture. I'd be pleased to go in with both but think you can choose what you prefer freely.

Here's hopefully a bit of a different one. WCing in the Liverpool blank so all moves are for *3 weeks only*.

2ft 0.5 itb what would you do?

    Pope/Heaton
    Pereira/TAA/Robertson/Lundstram/Tomori
    Sterling/KDB/DSilva/Mount/Cantwell
    Vardy/Abraham/Greenwood

Interested to hear your opinions. Thanks!

      Hey mate.
That team looks like needing WC ASAP

Mane/Son/Pulisic/Ings/Jimenez/selling Heaton would be must made decisions.

I'd sell 6 of your attackers on WC !

12? No. Just a huge fan of Scorsese, De Niro and Pesci (brilliant performance as the laid back Don). Great to see another hero Pacino thrown into the mix. Trying to make 70-year old guys look 40, didn't really work for me. Hence my critique of CGI. But as I said previously, worth a watch.

It's not far too long at all. It's a long film worthy of every minute of its run time, just like every other epic film in history that eclipsed 3 hours.

Utterly brilliant and a cinematic masterpiece and likely the last time we see those big 3 on screen together and eventually at all.

As soon as it finished I wanted to watch it again to focus on the smaller roles and anything I missed.

Considering it is based on real life makes it even more brilliant.

      A gem.

    Tuesday expectations.

    (1) lots of rotation and Pepping
    (2) I will pick the wrong captain
    (3) there will be a Pukki, Ings, Zaha, or Mousset Hat Trick that will re-define the Festive period and trigger a stampede
