Who are the best FPL captain candidates for Gameweek 15?

Fantasy Premier League managers have yet another captaincy decision to make as the midweek Gameweek 15 approaches.

Starting on Tuesday night, the latest round of action pits Liverpool against Everton, Manchester City against Burnley and Leicester against Watford.

As per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to help you make the right choice for the armband using a comparison of the in-form players and their upcoming opponents.

As this piece uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up for the 2019/20 can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Jamie Vardy (£9.9m) has absolutely decimated the captain poll for Gameweek 15, with a humongous 58% share of the vote.

Perhaps we should not be too surprised by such support given that the Leicester forward last blanked in Gameweek 8 and has eight goals in six matches since then.

The fact that Watford come to the King Power Stadium directly after losing a second manager this season probably does not help their cause, but may play into Vardy’s hands. Furthermore, Watford may also have to field another line-up short of key defensive personnel.

A long way off in second place is Wilfried Zaha (£6.6m) who has amassed just 6.4% of the vote.

The Crystal Palace man has scored in each of his last two outings, against Liverpool and Burnley and this week faces Bournemouth.

The Cherries have lost their last three matches on the spin, conceding at two goals or more to Newcastle, Wolves and Tottenham.

Sadio Mané (£12.2m) is looking at a third-place finish in the captain poll but is still only being considered by 4.4% of the voters.

The Liverpool man blanked at Anfield for the first time since Gameweek 3 on Saturday afternoon and faces Everton on Wednesday night.

The Toffees have conceded twice in three of their last five matches and continue to be plagued by rumours over the future of manager Marco Silva.

Mohamed Salah (£12.2m) will also likely be involved in the Merseyside derby but has been given backing for the captaincy by just 2.9% after his latest blank.

Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m) is the most popular Manchester City option on the back of two goals in two for the midfielder.

With Pep Guardiola’s men travelling to Burnley, the Belgian has been backed by 4.1% of voters, while Raheem Sterling (£11.9m) is supported by just 3.3%.

His goal at Newcastle was the first since Gameweek 10, so it may still take a little while before Fantasy managers trust Sterling en masse again.

Two goals for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) in the 2-2 draw with Norwich has helped him achieve the support of 3.7% for the Gameweek 15 captaincy.

Arsenal host a Brighton side that has conceded twice or more in six out of their last eight matches. They are especially porous away from home, having let in a total of 13 goals on the road so far. Only five teams have allowed more.

Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) may have two blanks in a row but he still has more goals and points than any other Chelsea player since Gameweek 10.

That’s why he is the most fashionable of his colleagues for the Gameweek 15 captaincy with the support of 2.1% ahead of Aston Villa’s trip to Stamford Bridge.

The Villans have let in two or more goals in five of their seven away matches so far this season and in each of their last three consecutive road trips.

Raúl Jiménez (£7.7m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) are the only other options with more than 1% backing.

The best FPL Phase I have ever gone through after 7 years of play:

Started GW 11 at 3.4 Million OR
    Ended GW 14 at 362 K OR

I followed a very interesting template/differential balancing plan to achieve such a climb + luck.

Q: your thoughts, if I want to keep climbing, now is the time for template or differentials? need to hear some experienced FPL thoughts here 🙂

I personally prefer a combination of both. Have the essential players and a couple of good differentials.

Interestingly, my plan was to stick to ALL TEMPLATE players for 4 weeks with no changes at all. (Except Son).

Imagine that? A bunch of templates and no intervention took me from 3.4 M to 366 K in 4 weeks!

Twas my interventions that too me up to 3.4 M in the first place 🙁

Play for points. Don't over think it. Watch the games. Minimise hits - save for injured/suspended players. Get on form early. Plan for fixtures/blanks. Same old stuff really. Just keep looking forwards.

        this.....

I was over engineering at first and flopped hard.
Once I focused on not challenging the OR, i immediately climbed up.

Just wanted some insight regarding xmass and what you think is the key here, temp vs differential, as it is VERY hard to think ahead for xmass.

I'd keep it simple - your team's spine is probably great - and you jumped on Jimi/Vardy etc early - so look ahead until the WC can be activated. And plan around the teams with great fixtures until then?

            yes needed some re-assurance. thanks

Ill stick to template and depend on others to try to think and bleed the points out.... (my plan for the last 4 weeks)
Ill have a solid bench for xmass, and hope I get lucky again.

Keep doing what you are doing with a mix of template and differential. No point going complete template otherwise hard to rise much further, just depends what your goal is for rank finish?

      1. The Bad Seed
        • 6 Years

Interestingly. my "plan" was to stick to template COMPLETELY for 4 weeks and it paid of huge.

I noticed that many people were getting sick of template, and forcing changes. Hence getting decisions wrong, losing template points, losing team value (for selling templates)... in a nutshell, that was me at 3.4 million rank.

Decided to STICK to (Henderson - Tomori, Lundy, Soy - KDB Mane Son + fodder - Vardy Abraham Jimmy).

Can you imagine that?! Sticking to 90% template (except Son) took me up 3 million ranks in 3 GWs!!!!!!

Not sure if I should add another 10% of differential-ness now. 😀

Always both. I usually like to have one punt/low owned player per position while rest is usually pretty template.

it's not hard jumping big gaps when you start at 3M at this time of year. you're leapfrogging tons of ghost teams that aren't following the template. you're now with everyone else with the same squads so further progress will require being lucky with diff choices

So early in the season points difference is relatively small, so 3 or 4 gameweeks of hitting captain right (and also some obvious captains that fails in same week) contributes to a fast climb when you are that low. I was approx at same rank as you and now i´m 590k, Vardy cap and some circumstances that fell into my favour, and when luck turns your confidence also creeps into your decisions. The hard part is from this stage (from 200-500k) to climb into well inside 100k,

      Number of things that are important in this period of season;
      1. Obvious but important nonetheless, keep track of deadlines so you don´t miss one
      2. as always, but be careful with transfers, stay informed about players, how much have they played, rotation factors and such. Players nailed or not could be a factor throughout this period .And example of a transfer i just did that not only take notice of fixtures but also takes in nailedness into equation, i did Mount to Zaha. This also a risk, Mount is highly owned, Zaha is not, but at 6.6 he can be Grealish if it does not work out.
      3. Try to have a well rounded squad, not only rotation but also injuries and suspension often comes in this time of year, having good options on your bench could potentially both give you points when you don´t expect and also save you transfers.
      4. Look at fixtures. That way it is easier to avoid players that have bad fixtures and vice versa.
      5. Captaincy. Again, try to make sensible choices, go for nailed players.
      6. You need luck

But nice effort putting them in bullets as some sort of checklist. Always good to have reminders!

        Simple answer. Yes.

Long Answer. It's a perfect set up for him. Two excellent wing backs. Attacking flair from MF. Lots of pace to create space. A manager who understands the potential and preferences of his players. Solid backline. It's ideal for a striker who admits he's in better form than *that* year.

I'd play both Cantwell and Soyuncu over Tomori.

      Probably bench Soy.

Keep Tammy and play Cantwell if injured or

Take a hit and get Jimenez, Rashford, Lacazette or Mousset

I'm keeping am eye in Mamadou Sakho. Only just back from injury but expected to start tonight after a cameo at Burnley. Had him at the start of last season and a chunk of the season before and he was a real baps magnet. Could be a good differential with Palaces strong fixture run.

Tomkins and Sakho are first choice 😀
