Everton 3-1 Chelsea

  • Goals: Richarlison (£7.8m), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.7m) x2 | Mateo Kovacic (£5.3m)
  • Assists: Djibril Sidibe (£5.3m), Tom Davies (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Calvert-Lewin x3, Kovacic x2, Sidibe x1

Tammy Abraham (£7.9m), Mason Mount (£6.6m) and Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) all drew blanks in Gameweek 16, much to the frustration of their respective owners.

Having conceded 10 goals in the last three Gameweeks, Everton appeared to there for the taking but Duncan Ferguson’s introduction on the touchline, and his use of a 4-4-2 formation saw a totally different Toffees side in action against Chelsea.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.7m) was the chief beneficiary from the change in system as he bagged a scrappy brace to ensure three points for the Toffees after Mateo Kovacic (£5.3m) had matched Richarlison‘s (£7.8m) opener.

On the two-goal striker, Ferguson exclaimed:

I love Dominic [Calvert-Lewin]. I think he’s a very good player.

Richarlison modelled his opening goal on Duncan Ferguson’s trademark style

Richarlison scored the first goal of Ferguson’s interim reign with a header that the ex-Everton frontman would have been proud of. That was the Brazilian’s third goal in as many Premier League games.

Playing alongside Calvert-Lewin in an old-school two-man strike-force set-up, Richarlison nodded home from a Djibril Sidibe (£5.3m) cross after Everton played the ball wide having won it from Chelsea in midfield.

Ferguson and his backroom staff had planned on getting at Frank Lampard’s men down their left-hand side, as he explained:

We talked in the analysts’ meeting about the wee bit of space we could get down that side [for the first goal].

Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison worked well together as a strike partnership

It was blood-and-thunder stuff from the Toffees in the opening 25 minutes, with Chelsea failing to test Jordan Pickford (£5.4m) as Everton’s pressure on the ball told.

Theo Walcott (£6.2m) almost found Richarlison with a low cross in the 11th minute, while Calvert-Lewin shot straight at Kepa (£5.5m) after a pass from the ex-Arsenal man.

Michael Keane (£5.3m) was fortunate that Chelsea didn’t punish his giveaway near the Everton area after 18 minutes as a heavy touch from Willian (£7.1m) blew the opportunity.

As the half wore on, Ferguson’s men grew slightly wearier as Chelsea came close to scoring a number of times. Abraham was just off connecting with a Mount cross from the left on 32 minutes and did not get enough contact on a Willian ball from the other side just before that.

Chelsea’ no. 9 was second only to Calvert-Lewin for expected goal involvement (xGI) in GW16’s early kick-off.

Reece James continues to get more league starts while Tomori has now been benched in each of the last two matches

The Toffees once more burst out of the traps after half time, with Calvert-Lewin doubling their lead having outmuscled Andreas Christensen (£4.9m) on the edge of the Chelsea box.

Richarlison then drove an attempt inside the box straight at Kepa before a Chelsea attack at the other end saw the Blues pull a goal back.

A cross from Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.8m) – operating at left-back – was cleared by Lucas Digne (£5.8m) into the path of Mateo Kovacic (£5.3m), who found the corner of Pickford’s net with a fantastic volley.

In the 59th minute, Walcott – as appeared to be the habit of Everton attackers – fired a shot at Kepa from an acute angle inside the box.

Azpilicueta was again Chelsea’s creator in the 79th minute, teeing up a Mount volley which was blocked by his namesake Mason Holgate (£4.4m). Pickford then saved a follow-up effort from the Spanish full-back.

Calvert-Lewin wrapped up three points for Everton in the 85th minute after a poor mistake from Kepa. The Chelsea keeper passed the ball straight to Walcott, who found DCL in the area.

His backheel gave Tom Davies (£5.3m) the chance to score but N’Golo Kante‘s (£5.0m) defensive efforts saw the ball spill to Calvert-Lewin, who made no mistake from close range.

Pulisic’s blank against Everton was his third in a row

Pulisic had a late opportunity to reduce the arrears but his header inside the area was easily saved by England no. 1 Pickford.

Ferguson added on his players:

They were a credit to the football club. A reaction we were looking for.

For his part, Lampard was not impressed with how Chelsea conceded. Asked if Everton’s goals were a case of sloppiness from his team, the Blues boss responded:

Yeah. The first goal, we’re aware that Richarlison is good in the air. The other two were just really poor defending from us. We looked like we were getting back into the game at 2-1, we can’t give away [those] ridiculous goals.

Everton XI (4-4-2): Pickford; Digne, Keane, Holgate, Sidibe; Iwobi, Schneiderlin, Sigurdsson, Walcott. ; Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin.

Chelsea XI (4-2-3-1): Kepa; Azpilicueta, Zouma, Christensen, James; Kovacic, Kante; Pulisic, Mount, Willian; Abraham.

  8. Should we lose our lethargic Liverpool assets?

Liverpool would have played 17 games in two months by the end of GW24.

Watford home GW17, Wolves home GW20 & Sheffield Utd home GW21 all have rotation written all over them for Salah & Mane etc.

Is it time to sell Liverpool player before the blank and get them back when the fixture congestion eases up?

    Fixtures (I think)
    23 Nov – Palace (Played)
    27 Nov – Napoli (Played)
    30 Nov – Brighton (Played)
    4 Dec – Everton (Played)
    7 Dec – Bournemouth (Played)
    10 Dec – Salzburg away
14 Dec – Watford home GW17 (Rotation risk)
    17 Dec - Villa away
    18 Dec – Qatar
    21 Dec - Qatar
    26 Dec Leicester away GW19
29 Dec Wolves home GW20 (Rotation risk)
2 Jan – Sheffield Utd home GW21 (Rotation risk)
5 Jan – Everton FA Cup
    11 Jan – Spurs away GW22
    19 Jan – Man U home GW23
    23 Jan – Wolves home GW24

Do we? There's a very important UCL match midweek. I can fully see a Mane/Firmino/Salah frontline there, and a Shaq/Origi/Ox frontline for Watford. Maybe one of the first choice front 3 may play on the weekend. TAA more likely to start given injuries to Matip and Lovren.

Would Liverpool simply have had quite a few more fixtures over these two months than, say, the likes of Leicester ?

I don’t mind covering rotation with a decent bench generally, by I do mind when it’s 12 m players

    6. Pacer.
      • 11 Years

I do wonder if we will see a few more sluggish Liverpool performances as the season wears on and whether they will subconsciously tend towards locking down their position by shutting teams out rather than chasing wins. Won't be surprised to see a swing towards more clean sheets and fewer attacking points

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 1 month ago

We'd need our defensive assets fully available for that

Klopp seems to have switched to the 17/18 high press since Fabinho's injury, so it might actually be the reverse until he's back... Which is weird in congested fixtures... And then more of the ground out wins on his return

        1. Pacer.
          • 11 Years
          6 years, 1 month ago

Yeah I wouldn't anticipate it until at least end of January, unless Leicester drop points. I think if/when that happens then Liverpool will be forced to seriously confront the probability of winning on multiple fronts and that surely would mean expending less energy and more rotation in the league

    7. Evil Buddha
      • 11 Years
      6 years, 1 month ago

Mane should play Watford after his rest anyway. Villa away will mostly be youth team and semi-final of club world cup is very easy fixture to rotate in. Gw 20 and 21 will be rotation for all teams. So I would hold.

More of an issue is that rotation hasn't slowed them down in terms of results and the lead they now have will encourage Klopp to rotate more often over his period.
Rotation last 2 games has seen 2 fresher performances and seemingly a bigger goal threat.

I agree, that is why I think quite a few of their big stars can be allowed to rest

I have to ask my self do I want a player costing 12 mill that is not going to start and have my bench 4.5 defender pitted against the likes Alli, Son or even Maddison, whomever really ?

It looks like a good chance to get ahead of the pack perhaps ?

I’ve sold Salah after his 13 point haul. Before Watford feels crazy (and might well be proven to be) but I couldn’t wait to jump on Spurs with the price rises. I’ll only have Mane for the upcoming fixture congestion and I’m happy with that given the rotation that’s likely.

I was in same boat, but points are better than money!!
Wolves away should be tough for spurs, will bring in son for salah once watford is done, and be a few hundred thousand worse off.

Sold Trent this week to fund Alli - he hauled v Watford last year so it’s a risk, but after that I wouldn’t want him.

Mane obviously stays this week then I think goes to Martial or maybe even Richarlison.

I started considering selling my Liverpool assets earlier this week, for the simple reason, Liverpool don't score big these days and struggle to keep a clean sheet. For example no, clean sheets at home this season. 12.3m for Mane and 7.3m for TAA is just too much money on two players, which I know i could use elsewhere and yield more points.

Good to know I wasn't being mad with my reasoning!

I agree it is a strange headline, they often are when FPL hulk things.

The worry is that Liverpool are scoring without Mane, Salah, Firmino etc and it looks like they can rely on other players and certainly my aren’t lethargic at all .... something in the past they would struggle with.

Fortunately the last 2 weeks haven't seen Mane or Salah come on for a cameo.
I'll keep Mane after this week and look again GW 20 onwards.
Having that lead has probably made it easier for Klopp to rotate and it's paying off.

On one hand, Son’s price rises will be harsh, on the other I bought KDB for 10.2 so his potential 1st drop doesn’t affect me.
I also already have Alli as Spurs coverage, though I want immediate double up seeing the way they play under JM

          Do it or save FT..?
          thx

I'm waiting to see how Arsenal play v Wham. But might just hold this week with KDB. Need to consider CL mins too but KDB will probably be rested as they're through already.

No, if he blanks vs Arsenal and owning Ings who is not a long term pick he will have no mercy on my part. But he gets Arsenal as i see that as very good fixture, only better fixture is the reverse one-)
Those fans who wanted Wenger out... well, look at what he had to work with in defense, the only decent defender in there is Holding and he is broken all the time by injury.

If you are planning to use your WC then now perhaps wouldn't be a bad time. Leicester and Liverpool defensive options could, could (!) end up being a bust for a couple of weeks in 18/19 due to blanks and lei/Liv/mci games. Rashford on the way up and maybe even martial, son looking essential, a better bench could be built for GW18 eyc

Still looks as good as he did then. Still shooting as he did. Still getting in good positions. Just had more saves, blocked shots, and shots (some rather narrowly) off target

With Bournemouth next, this is one asset who screams patience. But with the way this season has been...

His stats v Everton dropped dramatically, yeah I think will give him another chance but three blanks in a row for precious midfield slot is making your rank stagnant

Everton worked Chelsea over. That's part of why I'm in no rush for Rashford at the moment, but will get him in GW18 (even at 0.3M more) while offloading TAA + Robbo

Among Chelsea players, he's still leading or second for many stats. And even on the eye test and heatmaps. Three blanks don't necessarily mean a fourth is coming, especially if they involved bad luck. Some factors may combine again for another blank at Bournemouth, but if your replacement doesn't have a nice fixture, I'd hold for one more

After Maddison blanked against Everton and Brighton, I had a similar thought process and then checked... Saw that he'd been performing similarly to how he did when he had goals and assists, so held

I want Abraham back, he's Chelsea pick I think so depending whether Chelsea double is viable ... Pulisic will go from my team after BGW I think (if he's not producing next week)

I'm thinking of going Pulisic + Jimenez to Sterling + Greenwood by GW20, to solve a bench headache caused by GW18 preparations, and end up with no Chelsea

Funny thing is that if I don't make that move, it might be Jimenez to Abraham for a double-up. Got a lot of data to process before then anyway

                    Good luck! 🙂

I’ve got Aurier and Rico as the other two on the bench (and Button) so not an option really.

Fair enough, it's a really tough call though. I'd be really reluctant to bench Mount vs Bournemouth, who are in total freefall. As suggested below, maybe the midweek games will make the decision for you

Look at it again after the Euro games ... might be an easy decision by then.

Ah, that old familiar FPL feeling is back. Team on the slide, attempting to fix it with chronic over-management and chasing points. I think it's all these games in quick succession making me jittery.

Chasing points seems to be the way forward this season. People who got on Vardy, Tammy, Rashford, Son, Alli, KdB, Pulisic etc all have been rewarded with reliable and hefty returns in price and points over extended periods. Don't seem to have been as many traps as usual, anecdotally

True. It's just amazing how quickly things change. 2 weeks ago I had 4.6m in the bank and was 100% happy with my team, felt like I had all the players I wanted. Now I have nothing in the bank and feel like there are loads of players I don't own that can hurt me. All part of the fun though!

Unnecessary risk, that. With the strength of fixtures for other teams this is a crazy move. The "left field" picks are clearly Pulisic / Abraham. Sensible picks Vardy / Mane / Salah. I'd actually go for mega punt with Ings instead of De Bruyne.
